☾ ☽ HEADCANON - Health
Freya is in fact a type 1 diabetic. (Unlike me), she is a lot better with controlling her sugar levels. However, as it is a chronic condition, is does still affects her greatly. As a witch, she does tap into different herbs that help control blood sugar but she does use insulin pens to inject.
Though she does a good job in maintaining, Diabetes can very much be unpredictable at times, meaning she can be prone to low sugar levels ( Hypoglycemia ) which happens when taking too much medication, skipping meals, eating less than normal, or exercising more than usual can lead to low blood sugar for her. When she has these spells, her gets dizzy, really shaky. Her body will grow weak to the point its difficult for her move. Headaches, sweating, sudden nervousness, blurry vision, confusion or difficulty concentrating. And lastly, hunger. She will have a hunger that could rival Beel’s on a low sugar spell. She can get the entire fridge and more.
To treat her lows, she’ll need carbs, sugar. Which is why she’ll eat an entire fridge. ( You’re not supposed to binge and eat a shit ton of food, but I mean, when you feel like you’re dying do you really think you’re gonna measure the amount carb intake?? Doctors are so silly. ) Juice is really good for lows, orange juice. Anything sweet works for a fast rise in sugars! This is also why she will carry an abundance of snacks on her person.
Not treating a low can lead to serious health problems, induced comas, and death.
Second is high blood sugars ( Hyperglycemia ) that don’t happen as often for her, but can occur. This is kind of like the slow burn of the body, this usually happens when not enough insulin is being injected into the body, makes it harder for the body to process sugar and break it down. Sugar spikes will happen regardless of whatever you do to try and prevent it, trust me. Freya will try to keep her sugars as normal, but sometimes you just forget, shit happens. So they can run a little high at times. Things she has to watch out for are a little similar to that of a low sugar spell, headaches, mood changes, fatigue, blurred vision. She’ll have to use the restroom more frequently, as high blood sugars make your kidneys work harder which will make you have to pee more. ( Literally its the most annoying of all the symptoms). Really high levels, can result in diabetic comas and DKA ( diabetic ketoacidosis, also not fun ).
How she feels about it, she hates it but she’s accepted her illness. She will often crack jokes, and make playful banter about it in times where she is ill to help keep her confidence up. As a lot of times, being your own pancreas is exhausting and depressing. Luckily, with her magic, she can make some of the processes a little less painful.
#i was talking about how I wish there was more diabetes representation in fiction#cuz not everyone knows how hard and stressful it is to actually live with it#and when it is represented its not usually done right#or its treated like a joke#i was actually really nervous about adding this to Freya's character#I didnt or dont really know how it will be precieved#but my gf being amazing helped me build the courage to do it#you dont see ppl writing about these kind of illnesses#and i'd like to do that#bring one of my biggest struggles to light#nfdlfnskl# 𝒽𝑒𝒶𝒹𝒸𝒶𝓃𝑜𝓃𝓈. // 𝒷𝑜𝑜𝓀 𝑜𝒻 𝓈𝒽𝒶𝒹𝑜𝓌𝓈 ☽#☾ 𝑜𝑜𝒸. // 𝓈𝑜𝓇𝓇𝓎 𝓌𝑒'𝓇𝑒 𝒸𝓁𝑜𝓈𝑒𝒹. ☽
