opinions ask: the writers tried to push destiel in the later seasons. (I see this take among shippers and both people against the ship. Which is interesting. I’m of the opinion that there were more ship bait sprinkles in later seasons as fan service but it was still clear that the ship was heavily unrequited and it was meant to fly over general audiences head)
yeah this is true. more true of certain writers than others (dabb and thompson are guiltiest, I’m pretty sure). you could say “tried to push” but it’s more that they were providing fanservice to keep that part of the audience - as mainstream and loud as they were - tuning in so the show stayed afloat. very cowardly approach for the record. they were never going to fully commit to it because A) they never took it seriously and they never would have on a show this heteronormative, and B) I hope everyone can tell that jensen NEVER would’ve gone for it lmfao. so what we ended up with was extremely tepid and underdeveloped ship bait specifically included to please the fans who were looking for it with magnifying glasses.
like in the later seasons you can tell when dean and cas have a scene together purely for fanservice reasons as it adds very little to the plot and does nothing to develop either of their characters. cas as a character is an entire enormous storytelling problem of its own tbh but perhaps that’s a topic for a separate post.
ultimately not sure why people wanted it to happen so bad because it would’ve for sure sucked. on this show, with these writers, with these characters. it is one of the most OOC (for dean especially) fan inventions I’ve ever encountered in any fandom and I wish these writers - over-exposed as they were to their fans’ opinions - knew which ideas were worth exploring further and which they should’ve completely ignored as they made no sense for the story they were telling (cough s13 s*briel fanservice cough)
