Listen to author Mariko B. Ryan tell the story of Infinite Threads: 100 Indigenous Insights from Old Maori Manuscripts on the latest episode is #theflowartistspodcast This is an incredible book that reinterprets the manuscripts of the Maori Tohunga (sages) in a way that has great relevance today. There seemed by parallels with #meditation and #mindfulness which I was excited to ask about, as well the challenges of sharing these sacred texts across cultures. Mariko also works in IT and as a musician and she explains how these different layers of her expertise, as well as her cultural background inform the book. The process of securing the original manuscripts has a fascinating back story too!! 🌿Were there any good fantasy books published the year you were born?🌿 • 🐋Catch up- Day 24 #FantasyChallengeSeptember- ☆Fantasy book published in your birth year☆ • 🐋I had trouble with this one. There were hardly any fantasy book I’d heard of from my birth year, and I hadn’t read any of them! • 🐋Then I came across Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera, a New Zealand author. I’m not sure if this even counts as fantasy, but it’s as close as I could find. • 🐋“Eight-year-old Kahu, a member of the Maori tribe of Whangara, New Zealand, fights to prove her love, her leadership, and her destiny. Her people claim descent from Kahutia Te Rangi, the legendary ‘whale rider.’ In every generation since Kahutia, a male heir has inherited the title of chief. But now there is no male heir, and the aging chief is desperate to find a successor. Kahu is his only great-grandchild—and Maori tradition has no use for a girl. But when hundreds of whales beach themselves and threaten the future of the Maori tribe, Kahu will do anything to save them—even the impossible.” • 🐋I know I read this as part of a school project back in the day, but I can’t really remember it, so I won’t comment on the book. But it is well known in New Zealand. • I will recommend the movie, I recall it being pretty good and gives an incite into New Zealand culture and Maori mythology. • #FantasyChallengeSeptember #whalerider #witiihimaera #newzealandauthor #nzauthor #nzwriter #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #nzbooks #bookblogger #writingcommunity #readersofinstagram #readmore #nzbookstagram #nzbookstagrammer #maorimythology #mythology #mythologyretelling (at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFmfyMbggYW/?igshid=mb2bbnbw1e66

Happy Birthday Katherine Mansfield!! 🎂🎉💕 Here are some of my favourite bookish quotes from her published letters; "The pleasure of all reading is doubled when one lives with another who shares the same books." "If only there was time I'd write all one wants to write. There seems less and less time. And more and more books arrive. That's not a complaint." "On my bed at night there is a copy of Shakespeare, a copy of Chaucer, an automatic pistol and a black muslin fan. This is my whole little world." Her works are also available for free on Project Gutenberg; https://ift.tt/2yFEojE #katherinemansfield #newzealandauthor #femaleauthor #bookishbirthday #bookishquotes #thegardenparty #penguinmodernclassics #booksilove #booksandbotanicals #booksandbushes #bookinabush — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2QKdrTA
