Wayfinding in NYC
From Dwell, "How New York Developed its Wayfinding System."
This summer, the city of New York began rolling out its new wayfinding system. Wayfinding is the system by which people orient themselves in a specific place and find where they need to go; it's often comprised of a set of signs and indicators prepared by municipalities and sometimes private organizations. As cities have been more proactive about diversifying transportation options, wayfinding has becoming even more important and often starts from the pedestrian point-of-view.
In New York, the goal was to create a system that provided "consistent, official, in situ information that supports and empowers New York’s locals and visitors as everyone navigates, understands and explores more of the city."
A design consortium called PentaCityGroup combined graphic designers, industrial designers, urban designers and project managers. The signs began rolling out in the summer of 2013. The project started with signage but will extend to mobile applications and print.
