When new, unusual rashes suddenly appear on the skin, the redness and itchiness can cause distress and confusion—not to mention discomfort. There are many potential causes of rashes, with some immediately identifiable and others a bit more difficult to diagnose. Eczema refers to any of several types of chronic autoimmune skin disorders that result in a variety of symptoms, including red, cracked, scaly, or rough skin, which is extremely itchy. The resulting rash can spread to most areas of the body. Flare-ups are typically cyclical, with relapses occurring suddenly and becoming increasingly worse before resolving to return again at a later date.

Some of the conditions often mistaken for eczema include psoriasis, skin cancer, rosacea, and acne.

 Psoriasis

Both eczema and psoriasis may cause itching, though the sensation caused by psoriasis is often described as stinging and uncomfortable, while the itching from eczema is typically more intense. Psoriasis is characterized by thick, raised plaques of skin with adherent silvery-white scales, while eczema rashes look dry and flaky, and their scales are non-adherent.

While some of the triggers for eczema and psoriasis are similar (such as stress, tobacco smoke, and cold weather), psoriasis is also often set off by trauma or injury to the skin, such as scrapes, tattoos, vaccinations, and piercings (Koebner phenomenon).

 Skin Cancer

Some types of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, can have a similar appearance to eczema and other skin conditions. Basal cell carcinoma produces pearly red bumps or scaly red patches, while squamous cell carcinoma often takes the form of thicker, more scaly red bumps or patches. Skin cancer risk factors include cumulative exposure to UV radiation from sunlight, which mutates the DNA of skin cells, as well as genetics. People who have fair skin, have red or blond hair, and have had severe sunburns earlier in life are more susceptible to developing skin cancer.
