💀⚡️🌹I've been lucky enough to be doing this job that I made up for myself for over ten years now and I still find myself in awe of some of the projects and folks I get to work with along the way.💀⚡️🌹 In what seems almost too surreal to be "real life," I recent had the opportunity to work with the @gratefuldead on an official, special, limited edition, 7" record sleeve!! A-Side- Uncle Johns Band B- Side- New Speedway Boogie This is a limited edition pressing and is available in the Dead’s website right now. A long strange trip, indeed. #gratefuldead #recordcover #illustration #packagingdesign #unclejohnsband #jerrygarcia #phillesh #bobweir #newspeedwayboogie

31 Days of Dead 2020 | Day #3: “New Speedway Boogie” – Alfred, NY 5/1/70
Tumblr media
December 3
New Speedway Boogie
5/1/70 – Alfred State College • Alfred, NY
Yesterday we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the album, American Beauty. Today we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the album, Workingman’s Dead, which was released on June 14, 1970. The fourth track on that album is “New Speedway Boogie.” It is a song about the tragedy that occurred at the Altamont Music Festival on December 6, 1969 when the poorly organized event, which utilized the Hells Angels as “security,” quickly turned violent, leaving four dead and dozens more injured. It didn’t take the band long to offer a response. NSB made its debut on December 20, 1969 – just two weeks after Altamont. Like “Box of Rain,” NSB took a very long hiatus, making its bust-out in 1991 all the more special. The song evolved to recognize other kinds of “darkness” after Altamont such as the Gulf War in 1991 and the gate crashing/death threat debacle that occurred at Deer Creek in 1995. If 2020 had a theme song, “New Speedway Boogie” would probably top the charts.
One way or another, this darkness got to give

31 Days of Dead 2019 | Day 7: Death Don’t Have No Mercy, Dire Wolf – Noblesville, IN 7/2/95 // New Speedway Boogie – Oakland, CA 2/19/91
Tumblr media
December 7
Songs That Have Taken on Different or Renewed Meaning – Part I
Death Don’t Have No Mercy (soundcheck), Dire Wolf (7/2/95 – Deer Creek Music Center • Noblesville, IN)
New Speedway Boogie (2/19/91 – Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum • Oakland, CA)
Some of Robert Hunter’s songs were written with a specific event in mind, but took on new relevance due to a different event that occurred afterwards. David Dodd explains this in the excellent blog that ran on dead.net until 2015 titled, Greatest Stories Ever Told:
The songs can “mean” whatever is ready to be reflected in your heart. The songs can allow you to connect with another aspect of humanity in a deeper way. The songs can wash over you, burrow down into your soul, spring back to new life over time, fade away into the background, but always, always inhabit a place present as an undercurrent to whatever life you choose to live. The songs fill the air, make the still water ripple, cause us to bend our ear to hear the tune, end as a scrap of age-old lullaby down some forgotten street. The songs can function as a secret code between and among people who hardly know each other. They can adorn t-shirts and bumper stickers and elaborate murals and carved mantles in homes yet to be built. The songs invite reflection and writing, conversation and sometimes argument.
The song, “Dire Wolf,” was inspired when Hunter and Garcia were watching the Hound of the Baskervilles on TV. It is an unabashedly happy song in the voice of the ghost of a man murdered by a six hundred pound predator. Garcia wrote the music at the time a serial killer known as “The Zodiac” was at large terrorizing the streets of San Francisco. Garcia said, “Every night I was coming home from the studio, and I’d stop at an intersection and look around, and if a car pulled up, it was like, ‘This is it. I’m gonna die now.’ It became a game. Every night I was conscious of that thing, and the refrain got to be so real to me: ‘Please don’t murder me.’ It was a coincidence in a way, but it was also the truth at the moment.”
The “truth of the moment” came again 25 years later on July 2, 1995 when Garcia received a death threat hours before the band took the stage at Deer Creek Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana. Three songs into the first set, with the house lights still on and a strong police presence, the band cut the tension with a little tongue-in-cheek prankster humor by busting out the peppiest version imaginable of “Dire Wolf.” Never were Garcia’s pleas for his life so meaningful – “Don’t murder me.” Earlier that day, the band sound checked “Death Don’t Have No Mercy,” which had not been played since 1989, but they abandoned the idea when Garcia could not remember how it went. The sound check is available from a hissy audio mix that comes from the band’s ear monitors. I included that in my playlist as a little bonus.
The song “New Speedway Boogie” is about the tragedy that occurred at the Altamont Music Festival on December 6, 1969, when the poorly organized event with the Hells Angels as “security,” quickly turned violent, leaving four dead and dozens more injured. I read somewhere that if Woodstock got a generation ‘back to the Garden’, Altamont sent them packing east of Eden. It didn’t take the band long to offer a response. NSB made its debut on December 20, 1969 – just two weeks after Altamont. Interestingly enough, NSB was only performed on a handful of occasions in 1969 and 1970 before ultimately being shelved. However, the Dead found new relevance in the song years later during the “darkness” of war – specifically, Operation Desert Storm. With the not-so-distant memory of the horrors that occurred in Vietnam, the band busted out “New Speedway Boogie” on February 19, 1991, just a month after the U.S. began aerial bombing Iraq. In that context, the line, “in the heat of the sun a man died of cold,” combined with the chanting of “this darkness got to give,” bring chills.
