Build confidence in others with conversation, not compliments

It feels good to get a compliment. When we hear we’re talented at something, we feel like a million bucks, and in turn, we spread the love, especially when encouraging others pursue a new goal.

We tend to praise people's skills as a form of inspiration - telling them they’re super organized, or that they’ve got great people-skills or that have what it takes to achieve a new goal. So we were surprised to see new research which says that complimenting skills isn’t the most effective way to inspire others.

Instead, Patrick Carroll principal researcher behind the study suggests that the most effective way to motivate others is to provide a mental manifestation of what it looks like to achieve their goal. People need to hear and discuss the possibilities of an outcome in order to build self-confidence to pursue their goals. Once people see the benefits and advantages of a certain career path, they feel more confident to commit to that goal.

Jessica Stillman takes these findings and suggests that you should “opt for passion and not the ego" i.e. Don’t just stroke a person’s ego with simple praise, openly discuss the advantages that their passion in an alternate path can offer. She says that this is more likely to spike their passion in a new goal or pursuit and create more drive.

So next time you want to inspire someone to pursue a certain goal, give them an extra push by giving them a look into what the outcome of their risk will be.

     I have been very lax in working on these pursuits, my Daily Pursuits. Excuses mounted amidst a busy life. My focus waned when uncertainty came, but now I see some direction. Thanks to my man Darren Carter for a little timely push.
