Haerin smiled brightly as she finished decorating the cake in front of her. It's your birthday and like every other year since you met, Haerin and her friends would never let this date go unnoticed, you deserved at least a cake.

"Perfect." she murmured happily and gained the attention of Danielle, who was taking other decorations out of the bag.

“That looks cute.” Danielle held back a laugh at Haerin's clumsy decoration.

“Do you think she’ll like it?”

“She loves anything you touch.” the girl took the objects out of the bag again.

That was completely true, since your friendship, you always praised everything your friends did, but you always had special attention for the feline girl, because she was the one who caught your attention, no one could do anything like she did.

You left with Minji and Hyein, which gave Hanni, Dani and Haerin enough time to put together a mini party for you before you came back. It was the same thing as always, Dani chose the decorations and decorated it together with Hanni, who in addition to helping Dani also cooked the cake, the cake that Haerin always put together and decorated in a different way every year, so you arrived, pretended to be surprised and said thank you everyone for doing something like that for you, always saying that they didn't need it. It was the best birthday routine you could ask for.

You walked next to Hyein as she showed you all the cute objects she found, it was your birthday but obviously Hyein was going to get more gifts than you.

Haerin put the last candle on the cake and took a photo, she was confused whether to send it to you or not, since you obviously knew they would be throwing a party for you, after all, going out to “distract your mind” with Hyein and Minji wasn't the best of things.

Haerin, Hanni and Danielle looked at the decorated wall and table, there were confetti in several places because Hanni accidentally popped a balloon and it ended up becoming part of the decoration, there were your favorite sweets spread across the table in something that Dani called a “concept”, in fact she just didn't know a way to organize them, but Haerin knew you would like it and that made the three girls feel proud of the work they did.

“We’re good at that.”

“It was years of practice.”

“The first year was really bad.”

You waited anxiously until Minji finally said that you guys should leave, of course Hyein wanted to continue seeing the stores and some food stalls, but you also agreed with Minji and that made the girl have no choice but to go with you two. Minji and Hyein bought you some things (Hyein bought more things for herself claiming that “it’s a necessity”) and you made a mental note to put them on your shelf when they got to the apartment.

When the three of you entered the elevator you became impatient and fought the urge to stamp your foot on the floor, maybe the top floor wasn't the best idea.

You turned the key in the door and slowly opened it until you finally heard a bang and the rain of confetti with the 5 girls shouting “surprise”, you already knew this was going to happen, but you couldn't hold back your smile.

“Wow, you guys are excited.” you walked in and felt Danielle hug you tight.

“It’s your birthday, we have to be excited.” You broke away from the girl's tight hug and looked at the decoration, you immediately recognized the curtain of hearts and smiled when you remembered.

I'm not the type of person that thinks that you're a bitch for asserting position or your value, so this isn't where I'm coming from, but, especially in an industry where it's so rare to see groups say anything negative about other groups, particular junior groups I would think, it was quite the strong, swift position to take. You've said you're pretty familar with the corporate side machinations - could Hybe be purposefully airing all this, sure to stick it to MHJ, but also to temporarily drive down stock prices for idk easy shares-repurchasing? Or even allowing a mess they can blame for having to report lower numbers to shareholders for whatever reason: boycott actually impacting profit, hedging against lower-than-predicted bts returning numbers, etc.

I think these six asks capture most of the talking points in the asks I've received since yesterday, so I'll use these to answer your questions.

The sheer amount of spin happening in the media right now is ridiculous lmaoo. With the mention of BTS in the "escape files", ARMYs have predictably moved from shady bystanders to actively joining in the negative spin, spreading rumor articles and many are now attacking the girls themselves. But honestly, this is nothing less than what I expected. NewJeans is the most popular group in Korea, the 2nd most valuable IP only behind BTS, and Min Heejin is the brains behind the operation - an achievement she's insisted on taking full credit for since inception. Leaving the only option for whoever is masterminding this from within and outside HYBE, to destroy her reputation as an executive completely to diminish her value to outside investors, and weaken the fan support for NewJeans given how closely they are already associated with MHJ. And that's what is happening. It impacts every group at HYBE and nearly obliterates the viability of NewJeans.

For HYBE, it's a tolerable loss given there's only one year left before BTS returns and closes that earnings gap in mere months. Whoever took this action sees it simply as resulting in a numerical loss that can be soon corrected, but personally, I disagree, for the same reasons I objected to HYBE's acquisition of SM even though on paper it made numerical sense.

Anon in ask 1: I can understand your surprise but sad as it is to say, I expected that response from MHJ. She's a creative, not a PR exec or an MBA-credentialled suit. I'm not sure how familiar you are with ADOR's press releases in general, but anybody who reads them can tell there's almost no corporate doublespeak, no vague allusions, nothing that shows it's written by a typical media-trained PR person. Which is why most people, including you, take that statement to mean NewJeans agrees with MHJ that Illit copied them (it's a possibility), when in reality the language shows it could refer to them agreeing with MHJ's assertion that HYBE hasn't duly responded to her requests about inter-label discrimination, or other related matters. That's the kind of detail a trained PR person would be sure to include, to minimize the fallout to NJ, but just as with the press release on Cookie, the one on Minji's rival sasaeng, the response to Hyein's veneer rumours, and practically every press release ADOR has put out, the language is unsophisticated.

NewJeans has so far not engaged publicly with this scandal. MHJ has mentioned them to signal any separation between them will likely be contested. It's leverage. Anon in ask 2: I'd say that's not a conspiracy exactly but it is kinda pushing it. Anytime there's a stock dip it's a buying opportunity, and HYBE is always guaranteed to be a Buy so long as BTS is slated to return within 12 months of the stock event. But we simply don't have any clear indications that's the case now given the timing doesn't quite line up. If anything, that is more like the 4th order side-effect.

And yeah, people on the corporate side, not just in k-pop, are many times just that petty. But it's also true this case has been sensationalized in particular ways to appeal to k-pop stans specifically.

None of these options are good, but the worst of these evils is option 2. If the members attempt to leave with her, there's no pretty way to say this, but they'll be done. I'm not even going to waste time writing all the ways HYBE and k-pop stans as a whole will rip them to shreds, all I'll say is that whoever is attached to these girls should consider taking a 6 months sabbatical away from k-pop entirely once that news breaks. The law is not on their side and public opinion, especially after all the 'leaks' and spin from HYBE in the last 72 hours, certainly isn't on their side either. It would be career suicide.

Personally, I think yes. Every label at HYBE had similar initial monetary investment as NewJeans and ADOR had, and other groups from the Big 3 have had even bigger investments and resources at their disposal. There isn't a single group, both within HYBE and outside HYBE, that has yielded the same results as NewJeans in the same period of time. Illit comes close, but even with their achievements they haven't reached the same (positive) notoriety as NewJeans did at debut. All HYBE groups have access to HYBE's youtube channel, connections and resources, and yet the achievements of BOYNEXTDOOR, LE SSERAFIM, ENHYPEN, and even ILLIT, are nowhere near comparable to that of NewJeans. And I agree with MHJ that she's the primary reason why. Having access to resources is only one part of the equation. How you allocate those resources and what you do with it is far more important, and this is where MHJ and ADOR excels relative to other sub-labels.

NewJeans without MHJ will not be nearly as threatening to everyone else in k-pop, and I suspect this is one reason there have been calls for her to be removed from managing the group since their debut.

Anons in ask 3 & 6: Yeah there's a fair bit of greed on show here. Generally, for a lot of people in this industry, greed is good... unless the greedy person is a woman. Because the only thing more central to nasty corporate tussles like this, more than greed, is ego.

I'm not trying to play the gender card, but sometimes I do wonder why there are no articles like this about people like Jaden Jeong and Simon Jakob given the reputation those men have in corporate circles, where top officials (in this case, within HYBE) are saying they cannot possibly work with MHJ because she is "overly and excessively opinionated". I'm highlighting this article because despite the initial paragraphs of spin, that bit is the only thing consistent with MHJ's claim that this attack from HYBE started because she'd filed a whistleblowing report on toxic inter-label competition and followed up an email that said quote:

"..is this deliberate obtuseness and unapologetic behaviour consistent with HYBE's founding philosophy of rebelling against unfair practices in the entertainment industry?"

I mean... in corporate Korea, I can see how they were sick of her shit and it was only a matter of time before she got the boot.

The insidious thing about spin is that it mixes the truth with lies, making it easy for people to accept it wholly. It's entirely possible that MHJ wants more compensation, more autonomy and independence, feels that Belift and other companies borrowed her ideas without full credit, and that she was unsupported by HYBE HQ. It's entirely possible that she took actions such as monitoring fan feedback of the group(s) she suspects and filing a whistleblowing report to build a case - according to both MHJ and others at HYBE, these are complaints she's apparently had since last year, but none of those things would justify HYBE's response nor is it enough to turn people against her.

What I find particularly interesting about this case, is that everything that decisively incriminates her of the more sensational and sinister allegations, comes from the person of VP L or CEO A - a person who only joined ADOR in January 2024, shortly after which HYBE received their first tip-off that MHJ was planning to escape. It's VP L who titles documents with the equivalent of "TOP SECRET DO NOT TOUCH" on company computers... the same guy that's supposedly a double agent working in favour of MHJ and ADOR but is situated within ADOR, not HYBE, where simple logic shows he'd be most useful. Unless he's situated right where he's supposed to be.

Anyway...

HYBE has requested for a shareholder meeting on April 30th where they'll likely table the motion for MHJ to resign regardless of what's found in the audit. Far as I know, she's completed the audit questionnaire but not surrendered her laptop as HYBE has requested. Given the play is for HYBE to kick her out while continuing to manage NJ, I can see how she'd rather die than surrender her laptop and hand over her ideas (and potentially incriminating info) to HYBE on a silver platter for them to use in her wake.

Every way this shakes out is bad news for HYBE groups IMO. So long as NewJeans keeps quiet and sides with HYBE, they'll be somewhat okay. But regardless of the fallout from HYBE cannibalizing itself, all HYBE groups have no choice but to take it on the chin and bide their time until BTS comes back to capture the attention back to them.

megumi: same as nanami, looks like he hates kpop when he listens to it. he listens to it when he’s studying or relaxing. he’s definitely a seventeen fanboy, he loves their different concepts and comebacks, like megumi sets a timer each time they have a new comeback. if it’s a girl group, he’s definitely a dreamcatcher or red velvet fan. he’d also be the type to like day6 and the rose.

TOMORROW X TOGETHER proved their worth at Lollapalooza

Music festival Lollapalooza was held from August 3 through 6 this year in Chicago, Illinois. The names that were on the headliner list along with TOMORROW X TOGETHER are as follows: Billie Eilish, Karol G, Kendrick Lamar, the 1975, Lana Del Rey, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The boys of TOMORROW X TOGETHER were the second Korean artists—after j-hope performed there last year—, and the first Korean group, to headline the festival that draws some 400,000 people to the grounds of Grant Park every year. Let’s take a look at three words and phrases that capture all the excitement the group brought to the Bud Light Stage on August 5.

1. HEADLINER

This year at Lollapalooza, not only did TOMORROW X TOGETHER perform, but so did NewJeans, who played the festival’s T-Mobile Stage on August 3. Then there’s BLACKPINK, who headlined both Coachella in April and BST Hyde Park in July. Not only is it becoming a more common sight to see K-pop artists performing at major long-running festivals within and outside of the US, but, as in TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s case, they’re also being afforded better and better timeslots and stages. The recent rising demand for K-pop at festivals demonstrates both the power of K-pop fans and the inroads K-pop has made into the music market. TOMORROW X TOGETHER made their first appearance at Lollapalooza in the summer of 2022 with a 45-minute set. The documentary TOMORROW X TOGETHER: OUR LOST SUMMER, covering their US tour and stop at Lollapalooza, shows how the members of the group worried about the kind of reaction they might get at the festival. But their fears were allayed when their performance was met with ear-splitting cheers and the crowd singing along to the group’s hits. The show led to even more people in the US finding out about them and converted more listeners into fans. Then, a year later, the boys returned to the festival, but this time as headliners—with a longer concert on a bigger stage and with an even more enthusiastic audience.

2. MOAPALOOZA

TOMORROW X TOGETHER started performing at 8:30 PM, but “TXTPALOOZA” was already trending in the US on X (formerly Twitter) that morning. It was already clear two days beforehand how much buzz there was surrounding the group’s upcoming performance. There was a TOMORROW X TOGETHER pop-up store near Grant Park selling merchandise for the group’s Lollapalooza concert that was open for the duration of the festival, and BIGHIT MUSIC reported more than 200 people waiting in line for the opening on August 3. There was a line to get into the store for the entire four days it was open, with fans sharing and swapping things like photocards.

When the morning of TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s performance came, it started to rain over Chicago, but that didn’t stop MOA from crowding around the entrance to the festival grounds from early in the day in order to secure a spot close to the stage. By the afternoon, the standing area of the Bud Light Stage was already packed with MOA and their blue light sticks. When other artists performed throughout the day, it didn’t matter which direction the audience cam was facing: the giant screen showed a sea of light sticks and homemade signs bearing the names of the TOMORROW X TOGETHER members. MOA was filled with so much enthusiasm around the pop-up store and at the stage that the burning curiosity of other festivalgoers had them asking questions about the idols and their fans. As the Sun slowly set, people wearing TOMORROW X TOGETHER shirts, carrying light sticks, and wearing telltale signs that they were MOA streamed endlessly toward the stage. By eight o’clock, not only was the standing area directly in front of the stage full of people with light sticks, but so were the areas to the sides, stretching out far from the stage. At the same time, passersby were forming into a crowd just outside the audience, curious about the K-pop group. As the concert drew closer, the giant screen played short documentaries and music videos. Even though the members themselves hadn’t yet taken the stage, cheers erupted every time something new appeared on screen and the crowd was chanting their name. The swath of TOMORROW X TOGETHER light sticks lit a brilliant blue across the darkening sky, and as the countdown began, a giant roar of excitement flowed out from the glowing azure. It was the loudest sound around the whole day.

The audience sang along to the words of each song from the instant the boys came out and opened their performance with “0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You),” and continued singing together for the full 90 minutes. That included not just English songs and choruses with English lyrics, but also Korean lyrics and even an unreleased song. “I’m just excited about what song they’re going to start with, and for big fireworks,” Eliza, a MOA from New Jersey, said, adding with a laugh, “and I hope to see ‘Cat & Dog’ because I want to hear the bark in Chicago,” referring to the unofficial chant that, sure enough, the crowd broke into spontaneously when the group performed the song. A MOA from Florida named Hollie was “really excited” to find out what TOMORROW X TOGETHER would be performing this time “because I remember last year they really had a bunch of choreography,” and this year didn’t disappoint either: The audience loved the sharp choreography and dance breaks, and it was quite a sight seeing the crowd dance along to songs that have been featured in TikTok challenges, like “Good Boy Gone Bad” and “Happy Fools” featuring Coi Leray. On top of these energy-filled numbers, there were also emotionally charged songs like “Anti-Romantic” and the unreleased song “Blue Spring” that moved the audience to tears as they sang along. The rollercoaster of a set list closed with “Sugar Rush Ride” and fireworks to go alongside. MOA continued to chant “TXT” even after the concert came to an end. It’s safe to say that MOA’s enthusiasm was the secret sauce that turned an already fantastic performance into an unforgettable experience. Ask anyone who was in Chicago that day, and they’ll let you know it was really MOAPALOOZA.

3. TXT MADE HISTORY

“You could probably hear it across Michigan Avenue long before the concert started,” magazine Consequence writes of MOA’s screaming as the audience watched the countdown to the start of the show. “The last 10 seconds might have registered on the Richter scale.” MOA’s passion that day was noted by major media outlets as well. “Fans who queued early, blue cross-adorned light sticks in hand, got to prove their adoration by singing along to TXT’s unreleased track ‘Blue Spring,’” Rolling Stone reported, “and witness a band who didn’t take any part of the experience for granted.” And all that excitement extended to MOA online. That same day, “TXTPALOOZA” was the third-most popular trending tag on X worldwide; immediately after the group’s performance, phrases like “TXT LOLLA 2023 HEADLINERS” were trending in the US. In Korea, mentions of the songs on the set list bubbled up in real time. People watching online through Weverse, YouTube, Hulu and the like made comments like, “The audience there is even good at singing the Korean parts,” and, “I can tell how popular they are in the States!”—because even watching online, you could hear the cheering loud and clear.

Consequence made a  statement with how they titled their review: “TOMORROW X TOGETHER Make History.” But it’s about more than just the fact that the group was a headliner or how much noise the fans made. The biggest takeaway is how well they performed up on stage. “As the show progressed it became clear how much TXT have grown,” the magazine’s article continues. “The stage banter was looser than last year, they looked more comfortable, and more of their personalities came through,” and said the athletics behind their choreography made them look like “superhumans.” TOMORROW X TOGETHER performed their set front to back without a single break and still had plenty of energy left to work the crowd and get them to excitedly sing along and cheer. Their performance also led to online comments like, “You can tell how much better they got after their world tour,” and, “They look so natural—like rock stars.” British music review outlet NME gave TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s Lollapalooza concert a perfect score, saying, “Their performances are tight and impactful, their vocals phenomenal, and their stage presence nothing short of rock star status.” US entertainment site Vulture went so far as to say that “the group put on one of the weekend’s biggest spectacles.”

Winter, another MOA at Grant Park, summed up the significance of TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s performance at Lollapalooza where she said, “I think being headliners shows not only that they have a strong fan base but they keep growing and growing.” TOMORROW X TOGETHER already proved their popularity in the US earlier this year with a Billboard 200 number one and over 500,000 albums sold; their performance at Lollapalooza made that popularity tangible right in front of the eyes of tens of thousands. The opportunity to headline the festival also gave them another chance to show everyone at the festival who they are. The light shines through the curtains. I struggle to open my eyes. I groan thinking 'I still want to sleep' and slowly sit up on my bed. I stretch as I sit at the edge of the bed. I let out a sigh as I stand up, I start to walk to the bathroom. I open my bedroom door and squint from the sudden bright light from the hallway. I reach the bathroom door as I hear another door opening. I turn around and see the devil himself, Aster. He looks as he's about to tackle me if I don't hurry inside the bathroom. I quickly go inside the bathroom and close the door, as I close the door I hear a thud. 'HA! serves him right' I think to myself as I smirk. I do my bathroom routine ignoring the pounding on the door with the occasional yelling. "HURRY UP MERCY YOU'VE BEEN IN THERE FOR AN HOUR ALREADY!" Aster yells. 'Liar it's only been 20 minutes' I think as I look at the time on my phone. 'Oh well I'm already done' I shrug. I open the door to see an angry looking Aster, as I look at him I stick out my tongue in a mocking way and hurry into my room. "YOU'RE SUCH A BUTT CY (sea)!" He yells as he hurries into the bathroom. 'That nickname. Why did he go with that?' I question rolling my eyes. I do my morning routine well listing to my soft playlist. Once I'm done I go downstairs to the kitchen to greet my mom, who's usually making breakfast. I walk in the kitchen and my mom spots me and pulls me into the biggest bear hug ever, 'she might be shorter but she is the strongest person ever' I think into the hug. I pull away softly and smile at her, she cups my face "Aw my sweet baby I can't believe you're already in high school." Tears are slowly going down her face, I frown at her sad state and pull her into a tight hug. And give her an understanding smile while wiping her tears away, I give her a small kiss on her cheek. I go sit down at the table eating a waffle and drink orange juice. Suddenly I hear booming footsteps and look towards the stairs to see bigfoot himself, Aster. I quickly try to finish my breakfast before Aster eat everything in his sight even if I'm eating. As he finishes his food (and even some of mine but whatever) and he says "You ready chicken butt?" I roll my eyes and nod, I go to hug my mom bye. Aster and I head to his car, once we get in he asks me "Are you ready for your first day of high school?" I slowly nod and a nervous feeling in the pit of my stomach. He chuckles "I know you're nervous but you're going to be fine. High school isn't as bad as everyone says it is." I giggle and sigh a breath of relief, nodding with confidence now. It was the longest but somehow the shortest 15 minute car ride. Aster parks and gets out. I let out a shaky breath as I slowly get out the car. 'Well no going back now.' Looking at the school with my fake confidence.

Just wanted to rant something ady, if that's fine.

Newjeans has always been my ults ever since they debuted and this situation always breaks my heart into two. Knowing that they won't be able to continue as ‘Newjeans’ ever again, and possibly won't be able to perform their iconic songs if they actually leave ador and hybe. But I really really really hope that they stay together under a better company and provide us with quality music, though that is very... unlikely if we keep in mind this situation.

I don't like how people want idols to speak up but when they do, they are called brats? LIKE WHAT THE HELL?! Hanni is the sweetest. And people bringing up only the ignoring issue are dumb, newjeans’ private videos of pre debut were also released by hybe to shame them but people still overlook that, as if IGNORING was the only issue.

They hate Newjeans for taking the side of Min Heejin, while she may have been evil to others. She was the only person who provided them security in ador, so of course they are going to take her side. She gave them the concept and songs which made them NEWJEANS but these haters often ignore that. and this is not me saying that Min Heejin is a saint—no one is. Hybe is a greedy agency themselves. I'd rather take a side of Newjeans than of any of the two.

And the fact that I'm slowly liking and turning into an illit stan (gllit) because of their good music makes me sad sometimes. Of course not because it's illit’s fault but because it reminds me of the fact that Newjeans possibly won't make songs anymore like they previously did under ador :(
