Phantom Limb - 1 | Newartx.com
Tumblr media
In Scaria's Phantom limb - 1, we encounter various vehicles, such as trucks and cranes in miniature forms, constantly orbiting around a mound, possibly a mineral-rich mountain, in exhausting every inch to extract resources. Previously, the work was presented as a sculpture with these inanimate vehicles arranged around the mound. In this digitised intervention, created specifically for the exhibition, Scaria unravels the monstrosity and greed that pervades us with the alarming erasure of natural resources around us. Our increased complacency in exploiting natural resources is emphasised at the end, where the vehicles move towards a new terrain to excavate and destroy. One of India's leading contemporary artists, mainly known for his large-scale installations and video works, effectively blends the possibilities of these diverse domains in this work. Untitled - 1 | Newartx.com
Tumblr media
Valay Shende’s wide range of practice is characteristic of his complex analysis of contemporary Indian society. They are often highlighted through the tension between tradition and modernity. Untitled - 1 shows where the Lion is wearing VR glasses is an insightful commentary on the deceptive nature of technology. Whereas the immersive glasses offer an idyllic beauty to the beast, he is engulfed in a barren land, stripped away of life, and his own existence precariously positioned on a tree stump. In this isolated world, of barren landscapes, is the lion a guard of this abandoned world, or is the magnificent creature is in denial of its reality and immersing itself in an alternative vision?

Wedding Procession - 1 | Newartx.com
Tumblr media
In his artwork Wedding Procession - 1 is a heartfelt painting by the artist, capturing the essence of a bygone era through the lens of his childhood and early teenage memories. This artwork brings to life a traditional village wedding, where the air is filled with joyous singing and spirited dancing. Villagers, dressed in colorful attire, move to the rhythm of folk music, painting a vivid contrast to the modern DJ sets and bright lights that have now found their way into even the most remote corners. At the heart of the scene, the bride and groom are carried towards the village temple, a sacred place that has witnessed countless unions, symbolizing the simplicity and communal spirit that once defined these celebrations. Through this painting, the artist hopes to preserve the purity and charm of those days, reflecting on a time when weddings were more than just events—they were soulful gatherings that united everyone. As villages transform into bustling towns and cities, these precious traditions are fading away. "Wedding Procession" is an invitation to viewers to pause and reflect on these changes, to cherish the cultural heritage that forms the backbone of their identities, and to celebrate the irreplaceable charm of traditional village celebrations.
