The Ferns just made history by winning their first game in a World Cup 🥳🥳
I feel they could have made a bigger difference, but what a great game they played, they were far superior and what a thrill it was to see them win 😻

Animal testing
Cosmetic vs Medical
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cosmetic testing
Cosmetic testing has been widely banned, with the Uk banning it in 1998, the EU banning it in 2004 (sale and production of animal-tested products) and 2011 (Animal testing), followed by other countries such as Norway, Israel, India, and New Zeland. Currently, countries such as the US, South Korea, Argentina, Taiwan and Canada have not got bans in place but have proposed plans. Places like China still require cosmetic products to be tested on animals first.
The most common animal used in Cosmetic testing are New Zealand white rabbits. In both cosmetic and medical tests, albino animals are the ones used, likely due to the consistency in eye colour and fur colour and the ease of seeing results of the experiments.

Medical testing
In medical testing, the most common animal used would be a mouse or rat. In the UK this would be because, by law, for a new drug to progress onto a human trail it has to be tested on 2 different species of mammal; one rodent, and one Non-rodent.
These tests are to remove the toxic substances, the ones that have extreme side effects and to come up with a starter dosage. This has proven to help in many clinical trials with preventing extreme negative reactions in human test patients, although in London a new drug dubbed TGN1412, which was developed to help leukaemia sufferers, passed a monkey trail but went on to cause extreme negative reactions in 6/8 of its healthy human, the 2 who were unaffected were given placebos. The drug, which was 500 times less than dosages that were found safe in animals, caused high temperatures and organ failure, creating life-changing injuries.
A supportive argument for medical animal testing is the availability and sustainability of the animals compared to humans. Rats, Mice, Rabbits and Guinea pigs have high reproduction rate and short life spans. Rats have a life expectancy of 2-3.5 years and reach (sexual) maturity at 4 to 5 weeks, Mice have a life expectancy of 1.3-3 years and reach maturity at 3 months, Rabbits (New Zealand White) have a life expectancy of 5-8 and reach maturity at 4 to 6 months, Guinea pigs have a life expectancy of 3-5 years and reach maturity at 2-3 months while humans have an  average life expectancy of 80 years and reach maturity at 21-25. The average litter for; Rats (6-12), Mice (10-12), Rabbits (10-14), Guinea pigs (2-8) and short pregnancy and recovery times is much more sustainable than using Humans.
