Terrified but stubborn, Karen began investigating politicians who could have potentially been infiltrated by the aliens. It was reckless and absolutely dangerous, but she was about finding the truth, and about protecting whomever she could.

Miraculously, Karen survived the war and asking pervasive questions. Currently, she’s investigating Doom’s position as president, an election few people seem to recall in great detail. She’s still estranged from Nelson & Murdock, missing her friends greatly, and attempting to report the truth no matter the personal cost.

Down, but not out In September of 2018, I decided to head back to work in advertising and public relations with my own firm called Kera Marketing Group. I wasn’t too thrilled to be heading back to an industry that I once loved, but hated and dreaded of working with clients that often pay very little or no money at all. I worked in PR for over ten years and I started doing it after I graduated from the University of La Verne. Most college grads go off and find a job working in various industries, including law, like many of college classmates. I didn't go off to law school like I wanted to, but instead I worked in PR. What was my reason not going, if you may ask? It’s because I didn’t have the funds to begin the long three year process of obtaining my law degree. My father wanted me to find a job fast, so he can retire and move back to Croatia full time with my mother. I guess the universe had different plans than what he anticipated. In those ten years or so, I was successful and not so successful at the field of PR. Some clients paid well enough to pay off some college loans and I’ve developed connections in the entertainment industry. Before college, I was and now am, an actor in the film and television industry, having studied acting at the Lee Strasburg Theatre Institute in Los Angeles. However, I had bad luck with people who never believed in me, most particularly my “friends”. Notice how I put friends in quotations? That’s because they were never my friends to begin with and furthermore, I love to say I no longer associate myself with them. YIPPPPPIIEEEEE!!! I’m free! But that’s a different article. Let’s get back and talk about why I went back to doing PR and forming a new company. So, as I said before, in September of 2018 I went back and began working in PR for myself and before that, I worked in construction. You see, my father was a construction laborer who worked as a painter and dry wall union man who worked in this field for 35 years of his life. He too wanted me in the trades when I graduated from high school instead of going into college. I also did some handyman work as well, doing odd jobs around wealthy people homes throughout Los Angeles and brought in some nice hunk of change too. I fled the marketing world because I was tired of dealing with clients who were rude, devious, and often times, con men who took my time away from family and other opportunities. In that same month, I was involved in an automobile accident, where my 1998 Toyota Tacoma was T-Boned on the driver’s side damaging the driver’s side door and front too. It was early morning on a Wednesday and I got a call from my sister-in-law’s younger brother, who happened to be a trial lawyer. He called me and asked if I can do him a favor by submitting some court documents for a trial in San Bernardino City. I said, “Sure”. I went down to his office and picked up the file to be processed by the court. I headed back to my truck and drove off, not knowing that this will be the last time I will see my truck again. As I exited the freeway, I ventured off to a main street towards the court house and as I passed one street to the next street, it was going to be the hardest impact I would ever feel. A car that was traveling south heading towards the intersection of where my truck will be, was traveling faster than the posted speed limit of 35MPH. The car never slowed down and suddenly, my truck was struck from the side and I spun a 180 degree turn on the middle of the intersection. My head struck the side window, but not impacting any glass. I developed a concussion and my left should was throbbing. The car backed up and drove towards me again, hitting my truck on the front collision. The car backed up and took off running, leaving me in the center of the intersection. I was able to drive the truck towards the curb facing south. I paused for a moment. Trying to catch my breath and realized what just happened to me. My head was throbbing and I felt a bit dazed. I couldn’t get out of the truck as the driver side door was crushed from the impact. I had to crawl to the other side towards the passenger side and open the door. I walked out with my two feet on the ground and no signs of any serious injuries. I walked around and noticed the impact of the vehicle. I was shocked that I could have survived that impact with the car fast approaching. A police officer stopped and asked if I was alright. Still in a bit of shock, the officer examined the wreckage of my truck and said to me, “You’re lucky to be alive. Two more feet into the center of the door and you would have been killed on impact.” I couldn’t believe he had said that to me. I could have be killed. The officer told me that they caught the man who slammed into me and arrested him for fleeing the scene and driving without auto insurance. I was like, “Great, now what am I to do?” In addition to, the man had a pregnant woman with him in the passenger seat too. What an A&*hole! A tow truck took my truck away with me in the passenger seat in the tow truck and I was thinking, “What am I to do without my truck?” I knew I was going to loose my job in construction, since it was required to have a pick up truck to haul my tools and ladder around. I lost handyman jobs too, where I was set to do some painting jobs to help buy a new truck I wanted to get. My mother took me to the doctor to have myself looked at and get a medical report. I suffered no broken bones, but a minor concussion. The doctor told me I needed some rest and be prepared to feel some aches and pain from the crash. I spent the next few days laying in bed realizing that I was down, but not out. I told my boss on what happened and he felt sorry, but he had to let me go since I no longer had a truck for work. Again, down but not out. My father taught me in life, learn to work with your hands if you can’t find work to where you can work with your mind. So, I went back working in PR and I also began to work as a reseller by buying things at clearance from the stores and reselling them at a higher price online through Amazon, eBay, and Mercari. It was going fine until January of 2019 when my health insurance bill was going to increase by $61.00 more. I was not having a good year so far. But I had to persist in gaining more work, and I did, by adding more services to my marketing firm. I added web design and photography for clients who needed it. I gained a few clients for web design and began selling more products online. You see in California, you have to have a transportation to move ahead out here. Not like New York, Chicago and Boston, where the public transportation is more accessible than in Los Angeles. I began working harder on my job as a publicist. Then, it dawned on me. Do I really love this job? Am I really happy dealing with people and their marketing problems and often times finding potential clients? I said I want to exit the field of marketing once and for all and venture towards my own media company. You see, I formed a film and television production company called 523 Productions, LLC, which focuses on independent filmmaking. I’m currently writing scripts for film, shorts and television production projects and I love it. Let me say that again, I LOVE IT! It’s the greatest feeling in the world. I began working on projects and going back to focus on other projects and now. I’m writing this blog. The universe has spoken and not me. The universe said, “John, you’re better than this and people know it”. I often ignore the universe’s message and what it’s trying to tell me. You see, when things go south as it did for me with the truck accident, the universe knew I could be doing better than working in construction. Not that it’s a bad choice in a career, but the universe knows what I am capable of doing and creating. This article I am writing, is just the tip of the iceberg of what I can create. I was meant to be in media and a lot people recognize me working in a field that I love and I am very proud of working in. I love the creative individuals who bring so much to the industry and I want to learn from them as well. Maybe I will be a media mogul or something. Maybe I will just fulfill a big part in media career by telling compelling stories in documentary films or write a film story that will captivate an audience. Whatever the universe brings me, it’s meant for me. Remember, just because you’re down that doesn’t mean you’re out. Pay close attention to the universe and listen to what it’s telling you. Your ambitions, your dreams and your future should not be ignored by the downside of things. That’s part of life and what is to become of you in the future. Be prepared for what is coming. I know I wasn’t but I’m glad I’m seeing things in a better light for my future.

early life.

amir wasim khaled was born during the blizzard known as the “storm of the century”. his family was snowed into lennox hill hospital with almost four feet of snow outside. despite being born into these awful conditions, he was quite a normal child. he played hockey in the streets with the kids from his block and frequently had his friends stay over. he spent a lot of time playing with his older sister at the park and running around brooklyn. throughout elementary school, he was prized as one of the school’s most popular students. he was always an open, caring, and friendly child. however, it all changed after the september eleventh attacks. for nearly three years he was ostracized as a terrorist and suffered by his lonesome for some time. however, his true friends stayed close; despite the support of friends, he became more closed off and serious. this added to the charm he would develop in middle school. after puberty hit, he again became very popular, at least among the area’s female population. it was through amir’s participation in school sports such as football and baseball that led to his rise into being one of the most popular boys at his high school.

high school.

due to his good looks, his charming personality, and the fact that he played multiple sports, amir again became popular in high school. he was heralded by the female population as the hottest guy in the borough of brooklyn and envied by the male population as the most talented baseball player in the school. in school, he held multiple leadership positions such as the president of the school’s chapter of the national honor society and vice president of the senior class. not only did he have beauty and brawn, but he also had brains; throughout school, he accumulated a 4.6 gpa and tied with another student to become the class of 2011’s valedictorian. during his senior year of high school, amir quit playing football to focus on working at his mother’s candle shop and work on his skills as a baseball player. it was also his senior year when he met her. the woman he would spend nearly five years with. she was already in college and manipulated him into quitting his job at his mother’s candle shop in order to work in manhattan, where she lived. he would often lie to his family about having to work and would spend his “shift” with his new girlfriend.

college.

amir left the comfort of his brooklyn brickstone for the education his parents had always wanted him to pursue: any kind of business-related degree at new york university. he was easily accepted and decided to pursue a double major in economics and media, culture, & communication as well as a minor in business studies. while pursuing his degrees, he lived with his longtime girlfriend, the one he had met during his senior year of high school. he worked two jobs, still working at patsy’s as a waiter and doing high paying construction jobs on the side. during his stint working construction, he found a new love for beauty. he began spending more money on clothing and hair products and spent more of his time at the gym. not only was he concerned about being in shape, but he also thought that, as a business man, he would need to have a perfect appearance. the many mistakes he made during this time included getting tattoos all over, marrying a woman while also not telling his family, and getting himself fired from the only job he ever felt passionate about.

crown heights.

straight out of college, freshly married, and recently fired from a prestigious internship, there were not a lot of business opportunities that were thrown amir’s way. however, there was one; he received an email about a business park that was being torn down in a small florida town. they were selling the land for dirt cheap and amir figured that he had enough in his savings from investing in the stock market to handle building his dream business. without consulting his most trusted friends, his family members, or his new wife, he purchased the land. he poured almost seventy percent of his savings into building a restaurant which he would later name crown heights. he figured that his love for cooking would keep him invested and excited about the business for years to come. in a brilliant yet rare moment, amir wrote up plans to turn the land into another business park with his new restaurant and bar combo as the epicenter. the move to florida caused much friction between amir and his wife; this caused their eminent demise. he moved to mantauk to oversee employment and rent for the surrounding business spaces. he quickly learned of great success with crown heights becoming one of the area’s most popular restaurants.

recent history.

amir was growing tired of living in a gated community in suburban montauk. being surrounded by true upper class citizens and living inside of a gated community wasn’t exactly the right fit for him. although he wanted to live within his means and not below them, his eyes were set on cyprus oaks. the diversity of the community was appealing and their sixth building was exactly what he was looking for. not wanting to move into the apartment by himself, he recruited a few roommates to occupy the other rooms in the spacey apartment. amir fit in well to the cyprus oaks atmosphere despite spending most nights locked up in crown heights. without consulting any of his roommates, he adopted a dog when he was day drinking with friends. thankfully, his corgi beans was small enough for nobody to be charged. despite not having any history with his roommates, amir has found himself depending on them for emotional support.

personality.

although most people who knew amir as a child or teenager would describe him as laid back, he has become a much more high maintenance adult. he presents himself as a successful business owner and entrepreneur with strong leadership qualities. he strives towards his goals and is fierce when it comes to not letting others stand in his way. despite being deeply in touch with his emotions, he can be quite insensitive to the feelings of others, especially if their feelings get in the way of his business. however, at heart, he loves people. he is extremely loyal to those that are loyal to him. he gives his trust to people, but he does not believe in free second chances: he believes in earning trust when one is betrayed. he loves to attend social events including galas, wine tastings, and book clubs as well as barbecues, birthday parties, and game night. he is extremely outgoing and, despite his financial status, enjoys the little things in life.

Born in Fagan Corner Vermont, to Paxon and Penelope Page, Karen lost her younger brother Kevin due to a car accident. Shortly after that event, she moved from Vermont to work in NYC. Working as a secretary in Union Allied Construction, she received an email file containing evidence her employers were laundering money. She sought out the help of Daniel Fisher, from the company’s legal department. Unfortunately, when she met him for drinks her wine was drugged. She woke up in her apartment covered in blood, knife in hand and a corpse in front of her.

Arrested and taken to prison it was there she met lawyers Foggy Nelson and Matt Murdock of the brand new law firm Nelson and Murdock. While suspicious of their experience, she confessed she had no money to pay them. Nelson attempted to leave, but Murdock convinced him to stay, and they took her case after Karen explained it to them. While sleeping in her cell, someone attempted to murder her. Karen fought back, winning free and screaming until help arrived. In a response to the attempt and lack of official accusation, Nelson and Murdock were able to get Page released for her own safety into the lawyer’s custody. From there, the trio worked together to clear Karen’s name. Karen started working for the firm as their secretary and assistant.

Union Allied Construction wasn’t done with her yet, offering Karen six months’ pay plus additional funds if she signed a non-disclosure form. Suspicious she refused and started investigating on her own initiative. She recruited a reluctant Ben Urich of the New York Bulletin newspaper to help in researching the company.

Continuing to work with the fledgling law firm and Ben Ulrich Karen faced many different dangers. She also argued on the behalf of the masked man against Foggy, unknowing at the time that it was actually Matt Murdock. The investigation led to a Wilson Fisk, a figure with growing influence in both the political community and the hidden criminal world of Hell’s Kitchen. The pursuits of the case eventually lead to Ben Ulrich’s date. Page, working with both Nelson and Murdock continued until Fisk was arrested.

The law firm continues to struggle as the majority of the clients that they attract do not have funds. Their sense of justice won’t let them turn away people in need of their assistance. So the firm struggles to make ends meet while they do their best to seek out justice for those that need it. Karen is a cunning and optimistic woman utterly loyal to those close to her. They Let a Sick Inmate Die in a Van. Now They Won’t Pay His Family $650,000.

Private prisoner transportation businesses pack their vans with as many inmates as possible and spend weeks on the road making pickups and drop-offs on routes that zigzag across the country. If you were private prison transportation company manager, what would you do if informed that a prisoner picked up in Kentucky and needed to be transported to Florida had several serious medical conditions and was so weak that jail employees pushed him to the vehicle in a wheelchair, but you were also scheduled to first drop off/pick up and transport prisoners to Connecticut and Philadelphia before going to Florida: (1) maintain the current route, (2) find some other way to transport the sick prisoner to Florida, (3) something else, if so, what? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?

Johnny Smith spent almost 24 hours shackled in the back of a prison van — barely conscious and muttering incoherently — before he died there in 2011. A private company was hauling Mr. Smith, 48, to Florida from Kentucky to face a drug charge: possession of a single oxycodone pill.

A judge ruled that the company’s “carelessness and gross negligence” had caused the death of Mr. Smith, a disabled construction worker, and awarded his children nearly $650,000 in damages.

Such lawsuits are the only recourse that families like the Smiths have against private prisoner transport companies, which remain almost entirely unregulated despite the industry’s extensive history of passenger deaths and injuries. Federal agencies that are supposed to oversee the industry almost never act, and because the vans cross state and county lines, local officials can say they don’t have jurisdiction.

To this day, the Smiths have not gotten a dollar of what they are owed by USG7, the company that transported their father. As they and others have tried to hold the company to account for mistreating prisoners, an investigation by The Marshall Project and The New York Times found, the brothers behind USG7 have failed to appear in court, started a new company under a different name and claimed that its documents had gone missing in a U-Haul truck.

Yet the brothers, who operated out of Florida, have held on to lucrative contracts with jails and sheriffs. And they have acquired a major stake in the largest prisoner transport company in the nation.

USG7’s history exemplifies the lack of accountability in the prisoner transport business — even when people die. Every year, tens of thousands of Americans are arrested and extradited, or transferred, to another state where they face criminal charges. While some law-enforcement agencies move their own prisoners, those in cities like Chicago, Atlanta, and Las Vegas hire for-profit extradition companies to do this job for them, on the cheap.

These businesses pack their vans with as many inmates as possible and spend weeks on the road making pickups and drop-offs on routes that zigzag across the country. They seat violent fugitives next to first-timers facing minor charges. The vehicles seldom stop, and typically don’t have working seatbelts, air-conditioning, medical supplies or toilets, according to dozens of guards and inmates.

The handful of companies that make up this industry have been involved in more than 50 crashes, 60 escapes and 19 deaths since 2000, according to a review of lawsuits and local news articles.

After previous reports about fatalities and abuses in the prisoner transport industry, the Justice Department promised in 2016 to investigate. The status of the inquiry remains unclear. The agency declined to comment.

Last month, three members of Congress demanded information from the largest prison transport company about abuse and deaths aboard its vehicles, citing allegations of “inhumane and unsafe” conditions. Five of its passengers have died since 2012.

USG7, the company that was taking Mr. Smith to Florida, was relatively small, but it contributed significantly to the toll of accidents and escapes. In at least five cases, prisoners suffered severe injuries, including a broken neck, in crashes of the company’s vans, which often traveled at dangerously high speeds and late into the night, according to accident reports and interviews with employees.

Ashley Jacques, one of the two brothers who ran USG7, declined to comment when reached by phone. His brother Steven could not be reached. The family did not respond to certified letters sent to seven addresses associated with them or their companies.

Two lawyers who have represented Jacques companies declined to comment.

In depositions, the Jacqueses have said they worked at USG7 but insisted they were not its owners. But according to recently obtained emails between law enforcement officials in Florida, as well as phone interviews with 10 of the brothers’ past employees and associates, the Jacques family operated the business.

The Smiths’ lawyers spent several years trying to collect the $650,000 judgment, but USG7 had apparently disappeared. They decided it would be too difficult to go after the owners and closed the case.

“Not Driving Like They Had Human Beings on Board”

Ashley Jacques was born in South Yorkshire, England, according to a copy of his birth certificate. By 2007, he had joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

His family appears to have gotten its start in the prisoner transport industry at a company called Statewide Prisoner Extraditions. That firm’s former manager, Michael Harte, said Ashley Jacques did not follow instructions and was lax about security, and that jail employees would call in with complaints. Mr. Harte says he fired Mr. Jacques and his father, Leslie.

By 2010, the Jacques brothers and their parents had begun operating USG7. More than a dozen guards and executives said in interviews the company provided low-cost service, training its drivers only briefly before sending them out in poorly maintained vehicles.

Three former USG7 drivers said that in 2013 and 2014, they went to addresses listed for the company to try to collect back pay, but found empty offices. (In previous interactions with the Jacques brothers, guards said, they had met in parking lots, fast-food restaurants or hotels.)

At 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 24, 2010, Leslie Jacques was driving prisoners across Florida when his van slammed into a pickup truck, flinging him from the vehicle and into a river. He died. His wife, Pauline Jacques, who was in the passenger seat, survived.

The following year, a USG7 van crashed into a tree in Florida. A prisoner named Fred Ellis said that he suffered multiple broken bones in the crash, and that he still has chronic back and hip pain. The company never responded to a lawsuit filed in Florida and did not pay the $400,000 that a judge awarded to Mr. Ellis.

“They were not driving like they had human beings on board,” Mr. Ellis told The Marshall Project in 2016. Last December he reached a confidential settlement with USG7’s former insurance company, his lawyer said.

The Department of Transportation found that the company was missing paperwork, including an insurance document, when the agency initially audited USG7 in 2010, according to filings obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. But the agency says that first-time audits focus on education, not enforcement. The agency rarely imposes significant financial penalties against prisoner transport businesses when they fail audits, often giving them repeated chances to improve, according to a review of hundreds of the department’s records.

The Justice Department is also supposed to regulate the prisoner extradition industry under a 2000 federal law known as Jeanna’s Act, which is aimed mainly at preventing prisoner escapes but also sets basic safety standards for their transportation.

The law has been used only once, in 2013, to penalize a transport company for allowing a convicted sex offender to escape from an unlocked van into a cornfield in North Dakota. The fine was $10,000, plus the cost of a manhunt.

The Justice Department declined to comment on Jeanna’s Act, but a spokeswoman pointed out that a private prisoner transport guard had been indicted on charges of sexually assaulting three women in his care. The guard pleaded not guilty in January.

After a Seizure, a Plea for Help

When the USG7 van arrived at the Franklin County jail in Kentucky to drive Johnny Smith to Florida, he was so weak that jail employees had to push him to the vehicle in a wheelchair, according to police interviews.

Mr. Smith’s doctor had warned the jail that Mr. Smith had a variety of serious medical conditions. “I think his risk for an adverse event with extradition is high,” the doctor wrote.

Instead of heading to Florida, the van went east to pick up other passengers. In Philadelphia, Mr. Smith fell out of his seat while apparently having a seizure, according to a police report in Orange, Conn., where he was found dead in the van 11 hours later. Mr. Smith had asked the guards for help in Philadelphia, an inmate interviewed by the police said, but after a cursory check-in, the van had driven on.

The police in Orange declined to pursue charges, saying that Mr. Smith had died of natural causes. Both guards involved in the incident declined to comment.

Mr. Smith’s next of kin decided to sue. “It wasn’t just the money,” said Michael Smith, his son. “I wanted them out of business. I didn’t want a family to go through that again.”

But when a hearing was scheduled in 2014, no one from USG7 showed up.

The company’s lawyer, Walter Thomas, had appeared multiple times in USG7’s registration documents from 2009 to 2012, and was listed as its president in Department of Transportation filings during the same period. But in 2014, Mr. Thomas told the court that he had severed ties with USG7’s management and no longer had any contact information for them.

By 2015, though, Mr. Thomas was representing a new Jacques company in a Florida lawsuit.

He declined to comment.

“Yes, This is the Company That Was USG7”

Just a few months after the company stopped responding to the Smith lawsuit, the Jacqueses were moving to open another transport firm. They called it U.S. Corrections, and kept many of the same agreements with the law-enforcement agencies that had given USG7 business before, according to recently obtained emails and interviews with employees and associates.

In one email exchange, the manager of warrants and extraditions at the Broward Sheriff’s Office in Ft. Lauderdale wrote that Ashley Jacques “requested, if possible, we execute a new contract with his company under the name of U.S. Corrections so we can be sure the conditions of our original contract are being met by his new company.”

“Yes, this is the company that was USG7,” she says in another email.

The sheriff’s office said in a statement that it had concerns for several years about the poor record of U.S. Corrections, but that whenever the agency puts out a request for a new transport provider, it gets little response.

In two documents from April and May 2014 signed by Ashley Jacques, he states that U.S. Corrections was assuming contract obligations previously held by USG7.

In bids for new contracts, the Jacques’s company has written that “U.S. Corrections is a new company by name, but not by existence, experience, and management.”

But the Jacques brothers have maintained in multiple court filings that USG7 and U.S. Corrections are separate entities. And that has been enough to thwart lawyers trying to collect judgments.

Businesses often set up limited-liability companies, or L.L.C.’s, and in some states these companies do not have to disclose the names of the people behind them.

A person named Graham Wright, who signed at least one document in 2014 as the “owner” of USG7, could not be found. None of the employees interviewed said they had ever heard of him.

U.S. Corrections has been registered in North Carolina, Tennessee and Delaware, according to various filings, but it has operated from Florida, according to those who have worked for the company. Lawyers said they have been unable to find the Jacques family because rather than list their street addresses in court documents, they often used post-office boxes.

Ashley Jacques remains a member of the Marine Corps Reserve. He’s been deployed to Iraq and currently serves about one weekend a month and two weeks a year as a military police officer in Brooklyn, according to a spokesman for the Marines.

He has signed some business correspondence “Capt. Ash Jacques.”

“Slap a New Name on the Side”

About two years ago, U.S. Corrections was acquired by Prisoner Transportation Services, the nation’s largest extradition outfit. The Jacques brothers received a combined 11.25 percent share of P.T.S., and Steven Jacques was given the title of chief transition officer, according to court records.

In a statement, the company said that the Jacqueses “neither have the right or ability to manage or control P.T.S., nor are they involved in the company’s daily operations.”

“Make no mistake, P.T.S. remains committed to doing things right and working to raise the standards of service across the entire industry,” the statement says.

The company said it did not assume the liabilities of U.S. Corrections and had no relationship with USG7.

But one lawyer whose client recently brought a lawsuit against U.S. Corrections asserts that the P.T.S. deal was part of a recurring effort by the Jacques family to evade responsibility.

“Slap a new name on the side of its business and escape its day of reckoning,” the lawyer, Frank Hedin, wrote in a June email requesting evidence for the lawsuit, which proceeded for much of last year in federal court in Ft. Lauderdale.

The plaintiff said that in 2015, he was transported by U.S. Corrections for 52 hours inside a cage in a windowless van with no ventilation, no way to lie down, not enough water and only an empty bottle to urinate in.

The judge initially said she needed to determine whether the company had avoided liability through “a corporate transformation in form only.”

But in later depositions and filings, the Jacques brothers said they could not provide information about the company’s history because they had mislaid their records.

In one instance, they claimed that U.S. Corrections’s records are on a flash drive that they could not find. Other documents, they said, were in a rented truck that went missing. They have also claimed that it would take precisely 5,528 hours to gather information about past inmate transports.

In late December, the judge in the case ruled that the lawsuit could not be turned into a class action, because it would be too difficult to define who had been harmed by U.S. Corrections, when, and how. The plaintiff agreed to a confidential settlement with the company, and the question of who is liable for its debts remains unresolved.

Months after the merger of U.S. Corrections and P.T.S., the company was moving a man to Florida from Virginia to face a 9-year-old charge of stealing a pearl necklace during a burglary. Other passengers said he pleaded in vain for help. He died en route.
