books i’ve collected for the readathon:
the decagon house murders by yukito ayatsuji stories of your life and others by ted chiang house of leaves by mark z. danielewski the twenty days in turin by giorgio de maria sea of tranquility by emily st. john mandel the memory police by yōko ogawa the seep by chana porter i’m thinking of ending things by iain reid hummingbird salamander by jeff vandermeer tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow by gabrielle zevin
i’ve been dealing with some insomnia lately, but i’m hoping to get a good night’s sleep before the readathon. either way, i’m really excited to set aside the whole day for reading! i’ve got a few other books that i may pick up to read (our wives under the sea by julia armfield, the bone clocks by david mitchell, and a few non-fiction books in particular). thank goodness for libraries.

24-Hᴏᴜʀ Rᴇᴀᴅᴀᴛʜᴏɴ Cʜᴀʟʟᴇɴɢᴇ
Join me for a 24-hour readathon on January 28, 2023. This challenge is meant to take away your other excuses and distractions, and help you get reading this year if you, like me, have been having trouble getting to your reading goals. The challenge is meant to be as intense or relaxed as you want it to be—while this is likely to be difficult, it is not meant to be torturous; to the extent that this is not helpful to you and your goals, you can and should stop!
guidelines
for 24 hours your main activity will be reading, so that means no doom-scrolling, no tumblr (except to track and share your reading progress!), no wikipedia rabbit holes that make you feel like you just woke up from a nap and have no idea when and where you are when you surface, no video games, no youtube or tv, or any other activity that you find yourself picking up instead of reading during your down time
do eat, hydrate, sleep or nap, and take care of any other activities that are necessary for your well-being. feel free to change locations, such as heading to the library or a coffee shop.
you can and should put down any book that isn’t working for you and switch to something else
and remember, if you don’t feel well, don’t force yourself to keep going. your well-being, physical and emotional, are more important than any amount of reading you might otherwise complete.
timing
date: january 28-29, 2023 time: 10 am - 10 am est, or anytime that works for you!

approximately 2/3 of my way through the decagon house murders.  this playlist (& rain and bird sounds) have been keeping me company. i’ve lost the knack for reading continuously; i’ve become used to reading in fits and starts, jumping around based on what i’m reading, and frequently pausing to write in response to what i’m reading. i gather this is rather normal for people who read for their studies or work; it changes your relationship with reading for pleasure.
