Double Trouble

!!!WARNING!!! Read the tags before continuing. If any of the tags upset you then you probably wont like it when it happens in the story.

I think its fair to say that this is long overdue, I hate leaving people on cliffhangers, but i am very prone to do so. So I posted this, even if its a year late.

Not sure if I’ll be back again, maybe I’ll post a few stories I started on then never finished but who knows. Anyways enjoy the whump.

After Bud popped out his somehow less-evil-than-him twin, you couldn't help but to snatch the outraged coral up for a round of testing. You made sure to scrape up samples, eyes sparkling as the little coral put up a confused struggle.

You ignored Bud’s limp form on the towel, he looked to be in an incredibly rough shape, eyelights wavering, scales a little bloody, and little bits from the bones on his back missing. His mouth was still frothing, and he looked to be wallowing in his own waste, but you hardly noticed as you fluttered around the lab completely dazzled by the spontaneous birth of a fully formed coral.

You of course asked all the typical round of questions to the little thing, utterly fascinated by the asexual reproduction you just witnessed. You were sure that you’d just witnessed a breakthrough in what you were sure was the catalyst for the bitty surge. Their mutation!

You spent hours interacting with the coral, staring at the samples he produced while talking with him. You even ended up making a breakthrough with the treatment for the Brassberries who were still plagued by the growths. You ended up finding out exactly the source of the growths. Their makeup, and exactly why they were lingering on the brassberries where they had formed a complete bitty on Bud.

It turned out that the growths were in themselves a mutated strain of a virus that had taken up magical properties. The original virus seemed to be the cause of asexual reproduction in the original bitties. The virus mutated to start causing bittes to mutate as well, then mutated into this strain to exclusively promote more extreme mutation in bitties. It was searching for new traits or combinations of them to form into full Bitties.The Brassberries did not hold any extreme traits, thus the virus simply formed deady growths on them, whereas Bud seemed to have mutated just enough to create a newer unique bitty.

Even after finally tending to the catatonic Bud you ended up throwing yourself into research, only breaking to eat and use the bathroom. What you found out during this time about the virus and the new coral which you started calling Dub, was amazing.

The coral was incredibly energetic for its breed, finding pleasure in darting around in a manner most edgy types would deem too troublesome to attempt. Even if he was actually “less” violent than most corals, he still got angry, cussing you out and throwing stuff. He did almost bite you, which prompted you to test his venom, which also turned out to be far more potent than a regular corals.

He got angry a lot less than a regular coral,and his triggers were fewer than normal, and where Bud would throw tantrums, the coral would try to find the positives in a situation, and even attempt to work with you. Plus, where Bud was narcissistic this Coral was surprisingly self-aware, he would admit when he went too far, and even apologize for that behavior. A shocking trait for a Coral, yet also dangerous as it was easy to let your guard down after an apology.

He was still incredibly destructive, but he was far less malicious about it than most edgy types, plus the things he destroyed were easily replaceable and not valuable at all. The only time he ever really destroyed something valuable was when he was “clumsy” about it, which surprised you as he really tried to make it seem like he “wasn't” clumsy and was destroying things on purpose. He liked singing, and was incredibly open about wanting to cuddle, and would say he loved you frequently without a tsundere act. He was possibly the most bearable Coral on the planet!

Although he had some pretty surprising good points, he was still an Edgy type. He still tried to bite you, cussed excessively, was violent, was incredibly demanding, wasn't very bright, and enjoyed “marking” as much as Bud. You could say he was an ideal protection type bitty, but really if you were to even sell him he would probably be more dangerous than most Edgy types due to how he could almost seem “pleasant” at times.

Dub was still venomous, was more active than a regular edgy, and could easily trick someone into believing that he “wouldn't” bite you. Hell, you’d almost gotten bitten on the neck earlier when you gave him a hug at his insistence. His reasoning being “Bitch you give awful hugs!”

You had a hard time keeping your guard up around him, as he acted like a Blueberry sometimes only to turn around and try and bite you. During one of those instances you also found out something incredible about him.

“Hey ma… Can we talk?” Dub asked, as he chewed on a piece of meat you’d slathered in mustard as a bribe to let you take more ectoplasmic samples. You’d discovered that bribing him was one way to get him to cooperate, a mark firmly in the blueberry corner.

“Yeah Dub, tell me whatever is bothering you.” You replied, not looking away from the sample, you were noticing some strange growth coming from the samples you took from him, almost as if the virus was still actively trying to form him from the samples. They petered out fairly quickly and stopped their activity but it was still interesting.

“Can we go huntin?” He asked, as he viciously tore at the meat, he was wrapped around it like he was trying to strangle it, but the whole time staring at it like it was doing something wrong.

“When we’re done with tests we can go on a hunt with the other protection bitties, I’m sure you’d love it.” You replied, really he had been rather restless and you were sure to take him out on a hunt sooner rather than later.

Dub ended up glaring at you. “You’re never done with testin tho!” He exclaimed, as he let go of the meat and moved towards you in an aggressive manner.

“I’m BORED! I need some ACTION” He shouted, slapping his mustard covered tail on the table, splattering mustard all over your workspace. Really why you had decided that feeding him in your workspace was beyond you. Nonetheless it irritated you, and you turned to him with a frown.

“I’ve been giving you plenty of exercise! We play tag with the fluffies after we eat! Why can't you do that for a little bit while I finish up? It won’t be much longer now, you just have to be patient.” You stated, watching as Dub shook his head violently, and continued to argue.

“You’re a lyin bitch! We been testin for so long! I haven't even seen outside yet!” He argued, and you supposed he had a point, but it's really what he did next that pushed your buttons.

“I WANNA HUNT!” He screamed, before taking the samples you had just taken and throwing them off the table! “TAKE ME HUNTING NOW YA STUPID SLUT!” He cursed, baring his teeth and looking as if he was going to lunge at you.

You didn't give him enough time to lunge though, as soon as he bared his teeth as you, you panicked and punted him off the table as hard as you could. You heard a loud “thwack” as he collided with the wall, and more cursing.

“FUCK YOU BITCH! THAT FUCKIN HUUUUUUUURT!” He sounded close to tears, but was even now attempting to stand up. Eyes wide, you quickly put on your handling gloves and ran over, checking over his mustard covered form for damage. His skull was cracked, but that was about it, and he looked at you with tear filled eyes, and you could swear he was trying to look cute so you wouldn't hurt him more. But really what ended up catching your attention was the fact that without any monster candy, or even healing magic, the cracks in his skull were closing all on their own.

Your breath caught in your throat as you stared in wonder at the closing cracks, they closed up in a manner of seconds.

“Wow.” You ended up breathing out, before poking at the place where the cracks used to be. The coral in response bit your gloved hand, but seeing as you were wearing thick gloves, it really had no effect, even as he tried to bite harder.

Staring at him, (not at all irritated at his attempt to kill you, you swear) your curiosity ended up getting the better of you, and you ended up slamming the little coral into the wall again, cracking his skull once again, then quickly pulling the bitty to yourself and purposely prying open the crack as far as you could get it.

‘WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOIN! STOP! WE CAN TALK BOUT THIS!” The coral screamed as you practically split his skull in two. You got a glimpse of what his eyelights looked like through the crack, before you ‘accidentally’ completely detached the right side of the top of his skull.

Surprisingly the detached bit persisted for a few minutes, and you were utterly shocked with how long it lasted without turning to dust. Furthermore, you were shocked that Dub immediately started to regenerate, instead of dusting himself.

You held Dub like he was a treasure as you stared utterly captivated with his amazing regenerative capabilities. A laugh ended up bubbling up from your chest, and you ended up hugging Dub to your chest as you laughed. Of course the difference in attitudes ended up stalling him, and he ended up drooling all over your lab coat as you praised him, telling him how he was the greatest discovery since electricity.

After squealing for a little while, all thoughts of hunting completely left your mind, you instead locked Dub up in an enclosure while he cried about his headaches, and started writing about his capabilities. You were planning on researching exactly what kind of mutation he had, then once you had enough data you would see if you could somehow start breeding him with other bitties to pass on such a valuable trait.

You could only imagine what kind of bitty you could end up creating if only you were skilled enough in programming. You had millions of bitty design ideas that you could only dream of coming to fruition. Sadly the closest you would ever get to an ideal bitty was if you bred one. Dub himself was only a first step on that path.

You decided that first you needed to see if you could create another Bitty like Dub from Bud. So you ended up dragging Bud downstairs, kicking and screaming, and ended up feeding him a sample of the growths he fell into before. You saw what you were hoping for, and just like before, with enough shocks and emotional strain, you had another fully formed coral.

You were thrilled to discover that the second coral also had the same regenerative capabilities, and wasted no time in beginning your stress tests. In the end you decided that you would use Dub for the more tame testing, but as for the second coral, well you needed to know exactly what could kill this type, so you were strapping in for some brutal testing.

Everything started off tame enough. You took more samples of course, before having the both of them go through an obstacle course. There was plenty of cursing, Dub himself was so incensed with you and your testing that he simply refused to participate unless you kept true to your word and took him hunting. You ended up giving in to that request if only to obtain a set of data that you couldn't obtain in the lab, you ended up taking the other coral as well, and observed the both of them literally tearing themselves apart in their pursuit of the hunt. It seemed that they did not have poisonous venom anymore, instead they had paralytics. Which resulted in them using their exceptional stamina and irritating nature to coax more aggressive prey into chasing them long enough to either literally snap the bitties in half or have the prey collapse immobile but still aware due to the paralytics. After which they would wait for their bodies to regenerate and gorge themselves on their prey, live. You yourself ended up having to finish off their prey as they ate, which resulted in intense screaming on their part, something about ruining their fun. It was startling to say the least.

You gained many insights from this exercise. One being that the new corals were surprisingly well aware of their own abilities, as if they knew even without having to be told what they could do. The second being that they fell very firmly in the “protection” variety. Although at this point you debated on whether or not you should continue using “protection” as their classification, it was originally coined for marketing purposes but as the years went by it was just dangerous to call them anything less than hunters.

Of course after securing and storing the prey the corals had obtained you waste no time in taking them right back to the lab. They were satisfied enough with their work and cooperated fairly well with you afterwards. You knew that wouldn't last very long though, as what you had planned wasn't exactly pleasant.

You started with testing their magic. You didn't know how much these bitties could do, you gave them magical gauges, to measure their resting potential. Much like humans, bitties could increase their magic proficiency through absorbing it through places of power or artifacts but they always started with a baseline for magic at around the same place. These bitties had a slightly higher capacity for magic, but it turned out to be negligible in the long run. They could not use magic.

Next was the strength testing. You ended up testing their bite strength first, using a special tool, then their grip strength, and finally followed by the grip strength of their tails. It all ended up coming out at the average for Corals, much to your disappointment.

The next test involved their speed, it was the final test for the day, and to make sure you got the best results you ended up using what could essentially be called Bitty catnip to coerce the two corals into competing. You dangled a singular piece of mustard flavored magic treats in their faces and told them to race. You ended up setting up a small track for them to cover. You also stipulated that they were “Not to sabotage each other.” You’d made the mistake of not stipulating such a thing before, to say it was messy was an understatement. In the end the two of them tied, and the candy was split in half between the two. They were exhausted from the day's tests, and you needed them in tip top shape for the tests tomorrow. So you ended up patting them on the head, telling them they did good, and leaving them in their respective enclosures for the night.

The very next day though, you ended up setting up a longer course, or rather, you took the second coral to the track that you use for horses, a good circular track that didn't actually have an end with markings for distance.

“Ok little one, today I need you to keep running no matter what.” You smiled at the second coral as he stared at you, frowning.

“Wadya mean?” He asked, staring at the track with suspicion.

You took out a small collar and fastened it around the bitties neck, it was tight enough to press directly against the bitties neck while loose enough that it could move up and down. It was quite obviously a shock collar, a miniature version meant for bitties, with a little tweak.

The secondary coral batted away at the collar, wrestling with you to try and get it off, before ending up giving up and sending you a glare instead.

“The fucks this stupid thing for?” He glowered, baring his teeth as you set him down at the beginning of the track and pulled out a little remote control.

“It's something new I made after realizing I needed some more physical motivation for you little guys. It's brand new, and honestly I don't know any better specimen to try it on than a little coral who can regenerate from everything.” You smirked at the coral, as he seemed to shrink a little bit at your look.

“Now, like I said before, I need you to run, and if you stop, I’ll have to punish you.” You stated, waving the controller in his face.

“Fuck you!” The little edgy spat before crossing his arms and turning his little back on you.

Shaking your head, you turned the dial on the 8 setting before pressing a little red button underneath.

You looked down at the little coral watching as it seemed to flop over in a little convulsion, his eyelights started to flicker and foam started dripping from his mouth.

“FUUUUU---UuuuuuuUUUUCkkk!” He buzzed out, voice wavering from the shock.

The shock lasted for about 10 seconds, but the little coral looked like it had completely fried him. He looked at you in shock before you smiled down viciously at him, and pointed at the track.

“Whenever you stop running I’ll turn the shock up, this dial goes all the way up to 50, and can even take down a bear on that setting.” You watched the coral look at you in horror as you pointed in the direction he was supposed to run.

“Now get moving, or the next shock I set will be worse.” You stated.

“Fuck you bitch I ain’t doing shit!” He screeched at you, flopping down on the ground and thrashing around like a toddler.

“You can’t fuckin make me!” He screamed, right at you turned the dial up to 9 and pressed the button. You held the button down for about 20 seconds that time, watching the coral freeze up in shock foaming more at the mouth as you let the shock continue.

“AAAAAAAAhhhhh!” He screeched, and as soon as the shock subsided he looked at you with tear filled eyes. “Momma please! Don’t hurt me anymore!” He started begging, and started to slither towards you, with a tear streaked and snotty face.

“Start running then.” You stated simply a little disturbed by the fact that the coral had called you momma instead of mom, or even bitch, a testament to his mixed nature. The blueberry was showing itself off right here.

The coral started to blubber harder, and didn't even notice when you turned the dial up once more to 10. “P-lllll-leaaaaaase! Momma! I Don’t wanna run that track!” He begged as he inched closer to your leg.

You kicked him away, sending him flying towards the track and pressing the button while the little coral was midair. He screeched loudly, voice wavering as he fell, and simply lay there, stiff as a board and foaming from his mouth.

“I said. Start. Running!” You shouted one more time, finger poised over the button as you stared the coral straight in the eyes.

He listened that time, making his way to the track and slithering off at top speed on the track, he was still crying as he ran, and his ugly snotty foamed up face made him look like a cherry rather than a coral. Really if it wasn't for the gold tooth you would swear that he was a cherry.

You started the timer as soon as he crossed the starting line, watching him slither at top speed like a moron. You weren't exactly inclined to inform him that he would tire himself out more by using up all of his energy at the beginning. You were looking to determine just how far he could be pushed before he collapsed.

He passed you 3 times on the track at top speed, a mark firmly in the “hunting” variety, as you’d resolved to start calling them. You did have to turn the dial up at every pass though, as he’d taken to screaming obscenities at you at the stop, demanding to go home, or have chicken nuggies as a reward for “good behavior.” The speed he was going at was taking its toll, as he was already starting to show signs of fatigue. It was slightly above average for a hunting variety, but endurance wise it wasnt looking good.

By lap 5, he was sweating, by lap 7 he was moving at the pace he should have been moving at from the start. You had to shock him at the halfway mark on lap 7, and once more at the start of 8. The shock ended up at 19, at which point you could smell burning magic as he passed, an observation you wrote down in a separate journal in regards to the collar.

He made it to the lap 12 before he collapsed in front of you, panting, tear stained cheeks, and a sticky dirt covered tail painting a sorry picture. He weakly looked at you, pleading silently for a break, before you shook your head, and turned up the dial this time to 23. The level had been slowly rising with each lap, since he didn't seem to get the memo that cursing after each lap only brought more pain. Although this time since he was so exhausted he wasn't cursing, just trying to look cute.

Seeing you turn up the dial, he let out a weak sob, before getting a move on at a glacial pace. He was almost crawling this time, as he wobbled back and forth on his run. You knew this was the lap he would collapse, so you took to following him this time, ready to mark down the exact distance he stopped at.

It wasn't common knowledge that bitties tended to dust at extreme exhaustion, no one liked to test them to their limits But it was still an established fact, the question was whether or not this kind would dust as well.

He reached the quarter mark of the track before he stopped again, breathing heavily, face flushed red with magic. A sign that he was on the verge of extreme exhaustion. You simply wrote down your observation, and kept the button in sight of the mutant coral, causing the bitty to widen his eyes and begin slithering again a little faster than before.

You could hear his sounds of distress, a surprising amount of dry sobs wracking his little body as he went along. His face only getting redder as time passed, his magic running rampant. He reached the halfway mark before he collapsed once again, panting so heavily that you “almost” felt empathy for him.

“You can’t stop yet.” You said, pressing the button, and watching as red smoke curled upwards from the collar. You smelt cigarettes, and mustard in the air. The bitty sobbed even louder, babbling incoherently as he attempted to use his arms to crawl further, which you supposed you could allow.

He managed to crawl the rest of the distance to the starting point, before he smiled in satisfaction and closed his eyes. You wrote down the result, before shocking the bitty awake. This wouldn't stop just because he was tired. He woke, screaming and staring at you with shock and horror.

“Keep going.” You stated, as you watched him sob wordlessly and attempt to crawl further.

He kept stopping, and each time you turned up the shock, although eventually you ended up having to stop his shocks at 25. Turning the dial up to 26 caused magic to pop on his tail, roasting him alive faster than he already was. The only thing that saved him at that moment was that his regeneration was “still” at full capacity, healing any wounds instantly. You would have kept turning up the dial but since it affected the results of your experiment, you supposed that 25 would be the limit.

He kept crawling, until the edges of his fingers started to dust, and the red flush on his body started to literally burn him. You didn't let him stop. He lapped once more, before his little body literally started to explode. Horrifyingly, not killing him, as even while his body was malfunctioning his healing was not. In fact it seemed to go into overdrive.

The popping of his body sounded like firecrackers as the magic rampaged, you could see dust piling up on the ground. Eventually the magic caused more dramatic effects.

His arm exploded into dust, only for it to regenerate right where it had been, then explode once more.

Ecto flesh had involuntarily started to form, a little belly forming before melting off in searing hot magic, only to form again and boil off.

His tail wasn't any better, as the scales fell off repeatedly, before forming again.

His skull was the same as his arms, but for some reason he kept trying to pop off his own skull with his disintegrating hands.

He screamed, then stopped, popping his own vocal mechanism and spitting out dust, before coughing as they regenerated only to pop again. He seemed to be in eternal agony, unable to die painlessly as his own body malfunctioned. The only way it seemed he would die is if he ran out of magic.

“Momma! Please! Help me!” He shouted, and you almost did, before stopping yourself. The data was far too valuable, you ‘had’ to know just how long this would last. So instead you sat by him and timed his death. This wasn't exactly the first time you’d seen a bitty die from exhaustion, but it was the first time you’d seen them recover repeatedly from it.

The whole ordeal lasted for about 10 minutes, like a candle burning down to the last bit of its wick, it petered out slowly. The regeneration slowed down, longer intervals came between regenerated limbs, yielding deformed bones that curled in odd places as they popped like firecrackers while reforming.

His skull became just a small mouth as his eyes melded closed, his screams changing pitch as his vocal mechanism changed with repeated regeneration. His tail stopped regenerating, leaving only the tailbone, while his melted ecto flesh bubbled ominously as it formed restraints around his deformed arms.

Dust started becoming a part of the regeneration, forming little pockets that burst like pus from his skull, into an ever growing pile of dust.

Eventually the screaming stopped, and his tail stopped regenerating along with his arms, leaving a strange mass of crooked ribs and the back of a skull as his little red ai flickered before dissolving in a fizzle of red sparks.

The air reeked of cigarettes, burnt mustard, and burnt flesh, while magic swirled thickly in a red fog on the ground. You stopped your timer, and let out a shaky breath as you stared at the large pile of dust as it caught fire from the fizzle of magic and became ashes in the wind.

To say it was the most gruesome death you’d ever seen was an understatement. You almost thought it wasn't worth repeating as an experiment.

Almost.

I know it’s been a long time that you posted your Disillusioned mirio fic. but can you do another ending where they find y/n but she is just mentally gone. She never moves and only mumbles and whispers words so her family has no choice but to put her in a mental hospital

Emotionless

It had been two weeks since Mirio, Tamaki, and Nejire ran into the villain that looked exactly like (f/n). However, no matter what anyone said, the trio refused to stop searching. They took every opportunity that came their way to search for (f/n). Their determination was almost terrifying. They were unstoppable machines, hellbent on finding who hurt their friend and punishing them.

No matter how many times their mentors, teachers, or parents tried to talk to them, they refused to listen. Any time (f/n)’s name would come up in a conversation, they were immediately listening and extremely defensive. They would ruthlessly hound villains for any information, carrying a picture of (f/n) with them at all times. Any villain they ran into was thoroughly questioned before they were sent to the police.

Since they weren’t committing a crime, the police couldn’t do anything. Nighteye, Fat Gum, and Ryukyu tried so hard to talk to them on so many occasions but neither of them would listen. The only thing to do was to bench them, but they were too valuable. Due to their loss, they were even better and hunting down and capturing villains. The only problem was that it was mentally unhealthy.

Mirio, Tamaki, and Nejire excelled in all their classwork and pushed past what they’d already done. Everyone knew of the Big 3, but they also knew of what pushed them.

It wasn’t long before the Big 3 were linked to (f/n) and her disappearance. They weren’t accused of anything, but everyone knew of (f/n)’s relationship with them. Instead of phasing them, the trio used this to their advantage. Every villain now knew about (f/n) and how she was related to them. They spared no mercy to anyone who dared to hide any information about her.

Their efforts finally paid off and they caught a break. Tamaki had captured a villain and questioned them as per usual. But this time, he saw the small flinch at the mention of (f/n)’s name. It didn’t take long before Tamaki found out that (f/n) was alive. He immediately alerted Mirio and Nejire who wasted no time before meeting Tamaki at the location. Both of them had an off day but threw it away at the chance to find (f/n).

“She’s here?” Mirio asked as they approached a warehouse. Tamaki nodded as he got ready.

“That’s what I got out of the villain.” The trio took a deep breath before they snuck into the warehouse and started to look around. The warehouse was far from empty, in fact, it was an entire base for a group of villains. The trio quietly moved through the warehouse, seeing all the weapons that were being manufactured.

“Wait, is this the weapons ring?” Nejire asked, as she stopped behind a bunch of crates. Mirio and Tamaki looked around while Nejire opened one of the boxes and looked inside. “It is. This is where they’re making weapons and selling them from.”

“You’re kidding.” Mirio muttered as she walked up to her and peered into the crate. It was filled with weapons. Following suit, Tamaki walked towards another crate and opened it up.

“Hey, come look at this.” Nejire and Mirio walked towards Tamaki and looked into the crate.

“What is this?” Nejire asked as Mirio picked up a small vial. It was labeled “ricin”. Tamaki picked up another labeled “cyanide”.

“This is poison. They’re manufacturing weapons and selling them with poison?” Mirio whispered as Tamaki looked into the crate again. He saw small boxes of bullets that were hollow.

“No wait. The poison is meant to go into the bullets, look.” He picked up the small box and took out the bullet. “It’s hollow. I bet these dissolve when they pierce your skin.” Before the trio could do anything, they heard voices making them quickly cover the crates and hide. The three ran through a door and down the hall to get away from the villains. They came to a halt when they saw cells which were empty.

Almost.

“No…” Mirio muttered as he looked into the last cell in the corner. His eyes widened as his heart started to beat out of his chest. He saw a girl, sitting on the cold, damp floor with a blank look on her face. Her clothes were dirty and torn, she had bruises on her- all over her- yet she didn’t move an inch when they came closer.

“(f/n)!” Nejire yelled as the three ran towards her. In no time, Tamaki tore the bars off as Mirio ran into the cell. He scooped (f/n) into his arms, but she made no effort to move. The empty look in her eyes was scary and the three tried to get her attention, but she didn’t budge. It was almost as if she couldn’t hear them.

“(f/n)-Baby look at me.” But she didn’t, she just wouldn’t move! Mirio took her face in his hands and made her look at him. However, what he saw shattered his heart.

Even though (f/n) was looking into his eyes, he couldn’t see anything behind hers. They were empty as if there wasn’t a single thought in her head. Her lips moved but no sound came out, making him lean forward in an effort to hear her. Whispers. Whispers but he could barely understand her. She sat limply in his arms. (f/n) was so cold and there was so much blood on her.

Wasn’t she happy to see him? He dreamed of the day he’d find her. He could picture how happily they’d embrace each other and he’d beg for forgiveness. He’d beg on his knees if he had to. But… now that she was here in his arms, she wasn’t even moving. Why? Why?!

“No… no. Please no.” He whispered as he desperately searched her eyes for something-anything! “S-say something. P-please say something, I-I’m begging you (f/n). Move! DO SOMETHING!”

Tamaki and Nejire fell to their knees next to Mirio. Nejire weakly reached out with a shaking hand to touch (f/n), but couldn’t bring herself too. Before Nejire’s fingers could brush against (f/n)’s cheek, her hand fell to her side again.

This was their fault. This was all their fault and it was a punishment they deserved but not her. They had been so proud of themselves for being able to stand up to her. They were so proud when she had finally left. They were so happy. To Mirio and Nejire, they’d protected their friend. Their dear friend.

Until they heard the news report. Until they ran into that villain. Never again did they feel the same happiness. All three of them, mainly Mirio, were trapped in a reoccurring nightmare.

They often saw (f/n) in their dreams. It was the same dream usually, the day when (f/n) happily came to them but they casted her out. She didn’t know anything… yet they didn’t believe her. She tried so desperately to tell them the truth. She tried so desperately to defend herself, yet they didn’t even give her the time of day. How could they? How could they do this to her?

Tamaki took it the hardest. The dream was just a reminder of how useless he was. He couldn’t even tell a villain from a close friend. How couldn’t he? It was… (f/n). (f/n) was nothing like that villain but he didn’t believe her.

“I’m… so sorry.” Mirio whispered as he pressed his face into (f/n)’s chest and sobbed. (f/n) stared ahead with nothing in her eyes as her three friends sobbed beside her. Mirio held her tightly, hoping to find some bit of warmth in her, but there wasn’t any. She was… so cold.

She was alive, but at what cost? There was nothing left of her.

“This way, sir.” The nurse said as she led Mirio down the corridor. The hero silently followed her until they came to a stop. Mirio thanked the nurse and stepped into the room. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining brightly. Today was Mirio’s day off and he planned to spend it all here. Nejire and Tamaki were coming by later as well!

Mirio walked straight to the table and removed the old flowers from a vase. Every time he’d come by, he’d bring a beautiful bouquet of flowers. He replaced the wilting ones with the new ones he brought.

“Good morning, (f/n). These flowers were a newer set at the florists. She was sure you’d like them. I hope you do too.” Mirio chirped as he threw out the old flowers. He received no response, but continued anyway. “I finally have a day off! It’s so odd, I can’t really think of anything to do! I’m always so busy. I feel like I’m wasting time.” He laughed as he sat down in the chair beside her bed. He gently took (f/n)’s hand and started to ramble on about his day with (f/n) never responding, not even once.

This was his life now. (f/n) had been sent to a mental institution, where she was going to stay until she got “better”. That’s what the heroes and doctors told (f/n)’s family, but everyone knew the truth. They knew (f/n) was never going to get better.

Whoever took her made sure to finish her off before leaving her behind. They’d reduced her mind to ash so there was no chance of recovering it. (f/n) never spoke, she never moved on her own, she never did anything. Small mumbles and whispers left her mouth, but they were just gibberish. All she did was sit on her bed and stare at the wall. When she got tired, she would sleep. The nurses had to move her, bathe her, and feed her.

The villains they’d captured back at the warehouse explained they didn’t know anything about the girl. Their boss had brought her by and told them to keep her. Unfortunately, the heroes hadn’t been able to track down said boss.

Mirio, Tamaki, and Nejire always came to visit (f/n). They seemed like they’d gotten better. They were smiling and weren’t as hellbent on revenge as they used to be. They were happily chatting away with friends, they listened to their teachers, families, and mentors. They seemed fine.

But in reality, they were just like (f/n). The trio had lost themselves. Now that (f/n) was back, they started moving on as if nothing had happened. Their days moved by happily, but… they weren’t ok. When they saw her in that cell, whatever small part of them that had survived the initial shock of hearing that she was dead died right there. That little piece they’d managed to keep safe, that little bit of themselves that they were able to preserve was gone too. They didn’t look like (f/n). They moved about, laughed, and enjoyed life. But their eyes resembled (f/n)’s. No light, no happiness, no sadness, just nothing. Not a single emotion. Just like their (f/n).

They were no longer the Big 3 everyone knew. They were hollow shells, ones that were able to pretend everything was ok. Everyone tried to move on because just like (f/n), there was no hope left for them. This was something they couldn’t recover from, even though everyone tried.

On the bright side, they were together again. Mirio and (f/n) were together, whether it was physically or emotionally. On some plane of existence all four of them had been reunited through whatever they’d lost of themselves. It wasn’t this one though.

All four of them had died the day (f/n)’s body was found. This was just some pathetic attempt to say otherwise.

You answer your question within your question. But let me get to the point after this long detour… (if you wish to read JUST the answer, scroll down to the very end… to get to the “answer”…)

Think about it.

The show was moved into the Monday night comedy block…and yet it was originally supposed to be a drama with a comedy heart. It is also a “family show”, yet it was moved to the end of the Monday night line-up, airing at 10PM timeslot. The shows ratings and viewer numbers started to go down (as they do with almost every single network show as seasons go by)… And though we may never know what the Nielsen box owners think and what the regular/random tv viewers think about the show… we know that most online fans thought the shows writing suffered over the seasons, and that the hearty dramedy kinda fell into its own trap… choosing quantity over quality, choosing to go too far over the line. Becoming kinda ridiculous… even for a comic book superhero fun show. We know only what other vocal fans online think about the shows “progress” over the years. We do not know what most viewers think, but we know what many (online) fans do.

Think about it.

The official TV (spoiler) news & sites (and the network itself in their press releases) are referring to the shows lower-than-before ratings/viewer numbers and the fact that it just wasn’t working for them (on Monday nights…) and did not perform as well as they expected it to do. (writing an analysis on the possible reasons why that was so, and making suggestions what could have been done… by network, byt showrunners/writers to make it better… would take more time and energy than I choose to spend on this issue.)

They did not choose alderman Sly’s tactic…and coming up with solutions that make everything better… (Sly is making West Altadenia better with his street-lights & anti-bullying programs). They chose to not give other options a try, and instead start from clean slate. Taking the risk with new shows -since key demo that they’re after is younger audience, who just weren’t engaging with the show - they essentially (to put it in very rough terms) chose to replace the oldies with fresh and young faces. The network is obviously trying to attract younger and newer audiences… and are using “new, fresh, “hip” shows as their tactical plan. Only time will tell is this works or not. (I’m not the type of customer, but who knows about the regular US viewer and their preferences… in mindless medium?)

But obviously they did not care about the syndication deal/money enough to give it even a short 10-13 episode final season (remember: we’re at episode 94…or so…), so the show was only 6 or so episodes away from 100th episode,, and syndication deal. They also obviously did not want to move it to any other night either. It wasn’t working as part of the Monday night lineup, but they obviously couldn’t fit it into any other night either. In my personal opinion, which does not reflect anyone else, the show lost its way… it was still officially a drama, but it had become a comedy basically. And the kind that laughs at itself/its own jokes. It wasn’t the best of boths anymore, it was neither really… lately… not a comedy, not a drama, so harder to fit into any nights programme.

NOW…IF I WOULD BE THE ONE MAKING THE RENEWAL/CANCELLATION DECISIONS…

If you’d ask me, I’d say that a show which has gotten lost…and so far off the tracks that it (its showrunners/writers) can’t find the original path anymore.. because they’re not even willing to… is (to quote Happy Quinn) not good. A show which has become so inconsistent, and which is trying to fit too much content into too little space (too many plotlines, and not enough time spent on any of them), is not on the favourites list… when making decisions what to keep and what to let go. A show which promotes itself as being about team of geniuses, who are a family and each others support system (THEM against the world), but which has such poor scientific quality… is not very believable. Even for a show that’s supposed to be light and just-for-fun entertainment the content became “too silly”.

Can’t relate to a genius, who is being (science) dumb. Can’t relate to a team of geniuses who instead of their initial goal to add new EQ layers to their IQ become unrecognizable and forgetting their hearts… whenever it’s needed for the plot. Can’t take seriously empathetic geniuses who have forgotten their own struggles, and who instead of adding EQ and becoming more empathetic towards each other/everyone just become meaner towards anyone different than them…and anyone, who is like them in the past. Can’t be interested in watching a show which promotes itself as one thing, but in it’s core is (read: has become) another thing :(

ETA: This is sadly the fate of most network shows, cause networks & writers don’t know any other way to “develop” these personal storylines. And over time quantity wins over quality - most shows suffer from trying to fit too many plots into the show & dropping old/ongoing plots when new “better” ideas come to mind and/or when they think something isn’t working (instead of finishing the “notworking” plot before moving to new one, it’s kinda left unfinished).Maybe the statistics are right, and this is what the average US TV-viewer wants. Maybe the supply meets the demand. Maybe I’m just having a hard time believing how not-smart oriented network tv is.

A show that uses drama for only dramas sake. And not in the usual TV show style. But extra… A show that has it’s socially challenged characters bully each-other, and not get called out on it. A show that is so inconsistent, and so “aimless” that it is unacceptable even if taking into account that it is a lighthearted fiction entertainment program on network TV. They all were past the level they were dragged back to… to empathize the IQ vs EQ main theme of the show. When there were other ways….. when it could’ve been done honouring their development. The back & fort became so inconsistent… it didn’t fit the low-EQ slow learning curve and 1 step forward/2 steps back style… it just became… weird.

If I was the person making decision I’d given the show another chance (but only if a deal with the showrunners was made that they’d up their game. And after everything I’d given then a short 13-episode final season (if there was no room for full season), and moved the show to a different night…. or maybe even to be aired during summer. But a final deal only if the show would present their plans for what’s next in detail, and there would be sure signs of improvement in quality of storytelling, and a clear path.

But… I’m me, and I measure TV shows differently than networks do. I look for the quality of content, the writing and consistency. I do not care about adds, revenue, ratings, and viewer numbers. I’m a terrible business person. The networks are looking at different things than I do when making renewal/cancellation decisions. So their cancellation decision was reached by looking at other things… not the plotlines I consider the “deal breakers”

IMPORTANT: THIS IS ALL PURE SPECULATION THOUGH…

BECAUSE NEITHER I OR YOU (OR OTHER FANS HERE) WORK FOR CBS/THE SHOW. WHICH MEANS THAT WE’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW THE DETAILS AND REASONS BEHIND THE DECISIONS. IT’S A BUSINESS DECISION.

…and to get back to your question….

Think about it.

IF there would be something else (besides the lowering ratings/viewer numbers and the other reasons started in official press news) that we don’t know about then how am I supposed to answer your question if I (because you & I are part of the “we” aka “fandom” that you are referring to in your ask) don’t know about any other possible reasons behind the decision to not renew the show. So… it is impossible for me to answer as I can’t tell you something that I don’t know (about), can I?

PS. THIS, JUST LIKE MOST SPOILER/TV QUESTIONS I GET, HAS BEEN ALREADY ANSWERED IN MY PRIOR POSTS. SEE: HERE (post + tags) As I always say… IF and when I have anything to say/add/comment on any TV related stuff, I will make my own post, and the answers are always found in my posts. And it’s not that I don’t want to answer, it’s just that I don’t have anything to say. All I’ve had to say, I’ve already expressed on this blog.

And we can speculate as much as we want, and we can ever have ”inside info” (know more than the official statements say), but… we still can’t say anything, and can’t say anything for sure… And as I originally said… I do expect there to be some rumours.. as there always are after fan-fave show cancellations, but I won’t take part in commenting on those. At least that’s my position right now. But yes, it seems to me (based on what is known… that) there was more to the decision than just the thing mentioned in the press release. Maybe I am wrong, and the studio/network made the decision purely based on the things they mentioned, but everything points to those other (not mentioned) things also playing a part. But… those are only “need to know” and we, the fans don’t need to know (read: are not supposed to know about those other things)

PS. I do plan to write one more post… regarding the show and the series/season 4 finale. But I need time to really sit down and write the thoughts down. But in short… after I re-watched the finale (back-to-back with the Pilot)… I actually think this was a quite fitting book-end ending. Sure…not the happy ending most expect. But it was still kinda “coming a full circle” ending. From the Walt/Janice opening scene in Pilot to the Walt/Paige end scene in Finale. To the introduction and forming of the team.. to the “dismantling” of the team.

History of YOI fandom

As a YOI fandom grandparent, I felt it was my duty to write out all the fandom explosions for the newer fans who weren’t there to witness the big bang and gradual week-by-week creation of this universe. All the arguments, people blowing things out of proportion, blaming characters, death theories, awesome fans clearing up miscommunications, YOI breaking the internet...

This isn’t a post to call out specific people on their arguments and theories - I’ll stay respectfully away from restarting flames and picking fights, thankyouverymuch. Rather, this is an overview of the topics and conflicting views that swept across hundreds and thousands of people and prompted strong reactions. I’m doing this now, because I know that 6 months later, 1 year later, 3 years later, etc. there will be new fans who will have many of the same exact arguments. We’ve been there and done that. I see fans now who say things without knowing where the spelling/quote comes from, or who don’t realize how much has changed, or don’t know why there are certain perceptions of characters. So here’s a little bit of passing down history.

I also don’t want to forget the crazy ride this was. Laugh with me at the silly theories; smile with me at how deeply YOI has impacted our lives. For those of us old-timers, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Remember when...

Pre-series

Idea that there would be a love triangle (Yuri P.--Yuri K.--Victor)

Some fans started spelling Yuri Katsuki with two “u” in order to tell them apart.

Victuri ship name created for Victor x Yuri K. (in a comment to the PV)

The title

“lol ‘Yuri’ on Ice? Where are all the lesbians?”

“When it said Yuri on Ice, I thought we would get girls. Y’know what I mean?”

“Yuri on Ice? More like Yaoi on Ice! amiright?”

etc.

J.J. misspelling (English spelling “Jean Jack” instead of French Canadian “Jean-Jacques”)

you can see the remnants of this in the audience banners during the episodes, but it was corrected to “Jean-Jacques” on the official website and the in-show text

Episode 1

Victor vs. Viktor spelling arguments

Although “Victor” is the official spelling and seen in-show, people argued that the creators are wrong and that we fans know better than them about Russian culture - thus the “Viktor” spelling was born.

People argued back that spelling is subjective and you can spell a name multiple ways and still be correct - thus transliterating his Russian name into English as “Victor” would be just as acceptable.

The YOI wiki held fast for a time on using official spellings and information from the official website, but the transition of power led to a new team that started using agreed-upon info rather than solely using official info. “Viktor” replaced “Victor” on the website.

this change from “Victor” to “Viktor” on the wiki happened around episode 2~3, but the arguments were in the page comments since episode 1 -- with moderators explaining their reasoning with sticking to official sources.

Victor is a flirtatious over-the-top character who will seduce Yuuri

Victor is the overwhelming seme and Yuuri is the shy whimpering uke.

People dropping the anime because Yuuri is overweight; people commenting that they don’t want to see an overweight main character

in addition, some people dropping YOI due to feeling that the series was “fat shaming” by using Yuuri’s weight as a point of comedy.

Conversely, some people praising that we have a main character that gains weight and actually has an overweight appearance.

“Japanese Yuri” &“Russian Yuri” or “Yuri K.” &“Yuri P.” were used to differentiate between the two characters since they shared the same official English spelling “Yuri”.

Starting with ep1, “Yuuri” spelled with two “u” became more widespread due to convenience when typing.

Japanese fandom simply used kanji for Yuri Katsuki and katakana for Yuri Plisetsky.

Some fans argue that Yuuri is more correct because in Japanese his name is ゆうり(yu-u-ri). Other fans argue that “Yuri” is still acceptable transliteration because there are multiple spelling systems (Hepburn, etc.) and an alternative correct spelling would be with a macron (Yūri).

Fans point out that Yuri’s name would be spelled “Yuri” in official documents anyway due to lack of macrons on many keyboards.

Spoilers for episodes 1-3 were out because of the two Western fans who witnessed the first three episodes of YOI in a Tokyo preview screening.

fans relied on a certain blogger for info on YOI.

“WHERE DID YOU SEE EPISODES 2&3???” was asked every 5-10 minutes (literally) and became an inside joke with us old-timers.

Yuuri = Yuzuru Hanyu, Victor = Evgeni Plushenko.

Some fans link characters with real-life skaters to encourage anime fans to watch real skating.

Some fans saw these as one-to-one connections without considering that characters are a mix of various real-life skaters, and then went onto YouTube videos and spammed about “real-life Yuuri.”

YOI fans being rude to skaters and sending emails to ship these real-life skaters (emails sent even to skaters who are married with kids)

Makkachin’s name found in magazine Yuko was holding

speculation starts on what “Makkachin” means and how it should be transliterated (Makkatine, Mocatine, Makkatin, etc.)

Comparisons of Yuuri to the main character from Parasyte due to similar appearances (Tadashi Hiramatsu, the character designer who adapted Kubo-sensei’s initial designs for animating, was the main character designer for Parasyte).

Speculation on the year in-series starts.

Yoyogi for Worlds doesn’t match with Sochi as the GPF location.

Yuuri’s iPhone model is seen as a clue.

“Yuri on Ice” trends for 6 days on Tumblr

Episode 2

Victor is manipulative:

He’s a playboy and flirting all the time

In episode 1 Minako mentions that he is desired by millions.

His wink in episode 1 shows that he casually flirts with fans.

He will break Yuuri’s heart. He came to romance Yuuri, then drop him later.

He’s already pushing into Yuuri’s space with the chin-touching. That MUST mean he’s suave and planning to seduce and drop him.

“Victor calling him ‘piglet’ is so mean!” -- an extension to the fat shaming debate of episode 1.

Yakov’s angry comment to the press = more fodder about Victor being selfish and only there in Hasetsu for his own pleasure.

Victor is horrible because he broke his promise to Yurio x-number of years ago.

All of his happy smiles are a facade and he can’t actually be that nice.

Counterarguments to trust the creators and wait to see more about these characters because it’s only been 2 episodes.

Koibito translation nitpicking (it’s not “girlfriend,” Victor is saying “lover.” It’s a gender-neutral term.)

“It can’t get any gayer!” line starts to make its appearance.

Ship name “Victuri” cemented. “Victuri sounds like victory!”

Arguments about spelling it “victuuri,” because of the trend with spelling Yuri K.’s name as Yuuri to differentiate the two Yuri’s.

Counterarguments that “Victurio” would be for Yuri Plisetsky, so therefore “Victuri” would be fine for Yuri Katsuki.

The Blu-ray and DVD volumes continue to hold high sales. Magazines continue to be translated. Some ideas/meta are confirmed and others become defunct.

It was a wild ride from way back when YOI was only a website and PV. Every week brought new ideas, writings, meta, art, and discussions. It was to the point where some weeks you would get in-depth meta and polished art just hours after the episode aired. In fact, there was so much made that you could easily reblog hundreds of posts in a day for the more explosive episodes, and meta would either get hundreds of notes or be lost in the current of new stuff appearing every few minutes. At the rate that it’s still going with new campaigns, events, and merchandise, Yuri!!! on ICE will be active for quite some time.

A few years ago @mhayeson made a really fantastic post on Stiles’ Jeep, because let’s get real, who didn’t fall in love with Stiles’ Jeep.

Personally, I fell in love with Jeeps the first time I watched Jurassic Park as a kid and again when Teen Wolf premiered in 2011, the year I graduated high school and started college. Now that was when I started seriously looking into purchasing a Jeep, mhayeson’s was one of the first that I found related to Stiles’ jeep that really broke down the functionality of it when it came to fanfics.

I’m making this post to add to the knowledge of owning an older Jeep, mine is a CJ7 (‘76-‘86, mine is an ‘85). Stiles’ is a CJ5 (‘54-‘83), Jurassic Parks is a YJ (‘87-‘95). This leans far more towards the CJs. I just want to break down my reality of owning this beautiful car and add to the information available for all you people like me, who fall in love with the character of something though you may not necessarily be a car buff but you want one.

note: This is not going to be a reflection of everyone’s experience owning an older jeep.

First things first, buying a Jeep:

You’re going to want to ask a lot of questions. I personally lucked out and when my family heard that I was looking to buy a CJ, my grandparents offered to sell me theirs. I bought Apollo for a steal of $5000 USD, whereas when my grandparents were looking into selling it a few months before, they had an asking price of $10,000. I made the rookie mistake of not asking a lot of questions, though I did go for a test drive.

Personally I was not a well-versed car person before buying this Jeep and I still am not but I have definitely gotten better.

Things I wished I knew before purchasing the Jeep: What specifically has been worked on before? How is the exhaust system fairing? What is the state that the electrical is in? What about the seats (if they’re covered, ask to look under them)? What is the state of the floor? Are the mirrors attached to the body or to the doors (more on this later)?

Older Jeeps have a lot of rust problems. My Jeep has trouble spots all over but not as bad as many of them that I looked at prior to purchasing this one. I’ve seen ones where the floor has holes in it that have rusted through or even the walls of the Jeep. Sometimes older Jeeps have been sitting for quit some time, and if you’re like me, those are the ones that are within your price range.

Owning a Jeep:

You’re going to learn a lot.

Before this, I knew basically how to add oil, windshield wiper fluid, coolant, and brake fluid to my cars. I knew how to change my oil. Kind of how to change a tire but never had to. How to swap fuses.

Now though, I’ve done a lot of my own work on my Jeep that I never had to touch before on my previous car. Again, these are all fairly simple things when it comes down to it, but things I never expected to learn or need to know. Some of these I learned with help and some I’ve done alone. I’ve fixed vacuum leaks, changed my seatbelts and extended parts of them, removed and replaces my seats (both front and back), swapped gaskets on the engine, removed and replaced the center console, taken apart the doors and replaced locks and fixed window crank mechanisms.

Currently I’m working on finding the last parts I need to cover my locks so that can replace the siding as well as changing the seal on the top.

Now why have I done this?

Because Jeeps are expensive and can always be a work in progress.

And if I can do it myself, I’m not going to pay someone else to. Things I’ve had to pay people to do and am going to have to pay people to do: rewire pretty much the whole thing, weld cracks in the doors, reupholster the seats, and put in a new exhaust system. As well as going through about three starters and a flywheel (which for anyone who doesn’t know what I’m talking about, is a massive pain that while fixable, isn’t something I wish on anyone).

because my Jeep’s handles had crumbled from old age, the doors have been closed for the last decade by pulling on the window frame which has caused cracks like this that I have to get welded to keep from getting worse.

Now even though Jeeps are expensive, they are doable. Jeeps are fantastic and there are so many resources for owners. If you know mechanics or are related to them, join a Jeep Club, or have a second car, owning a Jeep on a budget is far more doable. I realize these are privileged things. I honestly would not be able to be driving my Jeep right now without them. My Jeep has sat around for months not running before, which is not something I would have been able to do without having another car because I can’t afford to just take it into the shop.

Often times these things have popped up without a warning for me. Probably because I don’t have a ton of car knowledge so I didn’t see the warning signs. Things that have happened while driving my Jeep that needed fixing immediately:

- my brake fluid stopped flowing correctly while going downhill and I almost crashed into a barn (but I didn’t and that’s what’s important, pump your brakes kids and remember to downshift to slow yourself down and to an eventual stop)

- someone cut me off and when I hit the brakes and downshifted the choke literally jammed itself shut and I got stuck on the side of the road

- while on a trip driving about 350 miles north a vacuum seal gave out and the jeep would die every time I stopped which in turn meant I was starting the Jeep more often, which destroyed the starter because of a preexisting issue with starting the Jeep (aka I had to be towed the morning after literally rolling into my friend’s apartment complex and pay about $400 to stick a bandaid on it and drive it home and fix it there)

- while on a trip the other direction about the same length, a tire tore apart on the way home, a stranger helped me change the tire and make sure I didn’t ruin my Jeep by putting the spare on the wrong side so we actually had to change two tires (turns out my spare tire was actually smaller than all the rest) and I had to buy four new tires before I could go home.

It’s great to have a community.

Not going to lie, one of the most awesome things about having a Jeep is that there are also so many other people who do and love them. I’m part of a Jeep Club where people get together to go on rides, go fourwheeling, hold classes on learning how to do those things, as well as things such as scavenger hunts, recommendations for parts, swapping services, or doing repairs for cheaper or helping diagnose problems instead of just fixing everything. Also it’s fun to wave at other Jeep owners while you’re driving down the road.

It’s honestly a little rough if you’re a major introvert or have social anxiety like me, but it can be fun.

Driving a jeep is super fun (for a lot of us)

Do you like not hearing yourself? Do you want the wind to almost constantly be running through your hair? Do you want to feel the car you’re driving? Do you want to feel like Indiana Jones when you’re headed to the grocery store?

Then driving a Jeep is great and if you don’t already, you’re going to have to learn to drive stick shift which means a lot more pedals under your feet:

Personally, I learned on a manual car so switching to a Jeep wasn’t a huge leap for me. For those of you that have driven manual before, a Jeep may be way looser than what you’re used to. The distance between gears in my Jeep is basically a wider range than all six gears for my other car. Also most only go to fourth gear, mine (because it’s been upgraded), goes to fifth which makes driving on the highway and interstate so much nicer.

Also a plus of driving stick as per my dad: you will always survive a horror movie. You get to that car to make your getaway and you can drive anything.

Another plus of driving a Jeep means you can go topless, your Jeep anyways. And you can go doorless! Basically you can take apart that beloved tin can you call a car like a Mr. Potato Head. It also means that during the summer months if you have long hair you will need to invest in so many hair ties. Rock the bun, the ponytail will whip you in the eye.

you also can get off roading tags and go explore your area and eat pizza with a great view.

If you want to take the doors off:

You’re going to need to get a Jeep with the mirrors attached to the body of the Jeep. It’s illegal (at least in every place I’ve been) to drive without mirrors. Many Jeeps and cars have mirrors attached to the doors. The reason for this as far as I understand it is because you can’t see jack all out of the passenger mirror when it’s attached to the body. You can see a bit, but not a lot, though once the doors are off, you get some more motion out of it.

I’m mentioning all of this because I was talking with my uncle recently who was looking at getting a Jeep. He wanted something a little newer (because it’s less upkeep and work) but he wanted to be able to take the doors off and where the mirrors were at weren’t something he’d thought of at all and admitted he’d probably not have thought about it until after purchasing.

See how the mirrors are attached to the body and stretch out from there? The mirrors have motion to pivot back and forth and the actual mirror portion can pivot wherever you need it.

Mirrors attached to doors:

On this Samurai the mirrors are attached to the doors and like most mirrors, just pivot back and forth, up and down.

Great for if you’re not planning on ever taking the doors off, but if we wanted to take the doors off then we’d have to get a second set of mirrors to attach later. You can buy mirrors that go into the hinge for when the doors are off that you have to assemble and disassemble each time. New they’re just under $50 and they are stationary once you lock them in.

These would be fine as well. I’m just lazy af and if I feel like going somewhere with the doors off, I like being able to just lift, set them aside (with something underneath to protect the paint because bust up your doors and that’s no fun unless you’ve got the money to fix them) and go. PS: the doors are fairly heavy. Mine are full, but you can always get half doors. When taking my doors on and off, I sometimes end up with a slight bruise on my thigh from lifting it up. I don’t mind it, but some people might.

Also if you have a top on your jeep, those full doors aren’t going to fit in the back (I tried). So no getting off work and deciding you want the wind in your hair a little more than usual if it’s a solid thing.

On the note of taking things off:

You can’t take the top off by yourself if it’s a hardtop and you don’t have a lever and pulley system set up.

Like Stiles’ Jeep, mine is a hardtop. They’re not very heavy, but you’re probably not going to want to take it off alone. You could but personally I don’t like taking the risk of smashing the corners or losing my grip. Hard tops are expensive (like $2,500 expensive) and mine is original so it’s 32 years old and in my experience a little more fragile.

If you have a garage and are handy, you can set up a sort of pulley system to lift it off, or if you don’t, then you might have a friend or two that would be willing to help you.

For me, I get help, and it means that once it’s off for the summer, it’s off until the end of the season. If it starts raining, you can’t just go and put it on. For my Jeep, there are several bolts and screws that need to be put in place in order to keep it on there. Which leads us to:

Everything you love will get wet, & possibly get paint and/or rust on it.

The thing about old Jeeps is that they are not water proof. Honestly, they will probably never be waterproof and probably were never waterproof, except for maybe that first golden winter that they were driven off the lot. But then the top came off. My Jeep has holes in the floor specifically for the purpose of draining the thing if it ends up with too much water.

Mine had (from what I know) the original radio and newish speakers, as well as a CB radio. Speaker and CB radio both stopped working, the radio turns on but honestly without speakers, who even knows? My bet was on it not working. Eventually I’ll have it removed. Currently I use a bluetooth, waterproof, and shock proof speaker that I lock to the inside of the Jeep.

All that white? Paint from the roof draining down when it rains or when it gets humid inside and the condensation forms on the ceiling.

I used to carry a roll of paper towels for emergencies and I used it mostly for cleaning condensation off the inside of my windows while I was driving and it was raining. I carry around a towel now because that’s more environmentally friendly and then if it pours while the top is off, I just hang it out to dry rather than end up with a giant soggy mess.

My heart goes out to my friend who went on a 350 mile trip in this thing during a snow storm and downpours. He was in the back seat and because the back of the Jeep curves up, where it leaked from the hinges of the back window, he got soaked. He also suffered through hearing a tire blow out right under his head (he was resting it on the wheel well).

Some of these are fixable in theory, but for me? Not yet. I have new seals to put in. It’s safe to assume if you get an old Jeep? Things will leak. I’m trying to reseal my center console to keep it waterproof, and for Christmas I got a lock box to put in the back that is waterproof. I carry my laptop around and the last thing I want is it ending up soaking wet.

Things to know about the security of a Jeep:

I am such a Nervous Nelly, so let’s preface this with that.

Last year where I live there was a span of about three weeks where a Jeep was being stolen a day. They were being taken everywhere. Outside of pizza places. Out of driveways. From parking lots. At least two people in the club I was in had theirs stolen. What the police said was making it so easy? Older Jeeps (and Toyotas) all use extremely similar keys. It meant someone just needed a single older Jeep key and they were able to get into people’s cars and start them.

My sister’s old Toyota used to be able to be started with a flathead screwdriver (it was also stolen not long after she sold it by a guy who used a different Toyota key as well.).

This was where I learned to take out an electrical cord from the engine that stopped it from being able to be started. When I bought my Jeep the locks were busted and I couldn’t lock my Jeep, so I was more comfortable with one more step of protection. One of the members from the club literally chained his Jeep to a pole during this time.

These Jeeps can also have their hoods opened without having to get into the cab. For ones like mine where everything under the hood is fairly super old it’s not really an issue, but regardless still makes me sort of nervous. You can buy latch locks if you want.

Hard tops with full doors are nice for being able to actually lock your Jeep. I can lock my Jeep and know that more likely than not, it’s going to stay locked and not be messed with. With soft tops/half doors etc., leaving nothing of importance in your car is a better practice. From what I’ve heard, it’s better to leave your doors unlocked than risk someone cutting your soft top or windows to get to your CDs (though that’s funny, CDs in a CJ).

You’re also going to want a locking gascap. You can buy these at pretty much any autoparts store. Without one, anyone can steal your gas. For me it’s very helpful because my gas gauge doesn’t actually work right now so if someone stole my gas I wouldn’t even have a warning.

look at that thing, so good. also if you live somewhere where you can’t pump your own gas, be prepared for people to try to lift up your license plate looking for a gas cap. my license plate is looking super sad from people bending it when I go to the gas station.

If you take care of your Jeep, someone will always want to buy it.

The good of it is that for me, my Jeep is a bit of an insurance policy. I know if something bad happens, I could sell it and make some quick cash. I don’t ever want to sell it (I want to be able to give it to someone in my family and keep it in my family), but it’s an option that’s there.

The bad of it is that this honestly can get annoying if you’re someone like me (aka stubborn). What gets annoying is that often times this happens completely unsolicited and in my experience not usually ever in a good way. It doesn’t typically happen in a bad way, but not a good way.

For background info: I am a girl. Jeeps and offroading vehicles are usually a male dominated space. This means if you’re a girl, or coded girl, then you may have some similar experiences.

There’s some sexism within offroading communities/offroading culture.

When I bought my Jeep, I was working at an autoparts store. One of my coworkers who had seen my grandparents’ Jeep before was almost legitimately mad that I’d bought it from them before he could. He also told me he’d give me 10k cash for it if I ever wanted to sell it.

Since then most of the men who ask if I’m selling my Jeep are persistent at best and straight up creepy at worst. Often times there’s some condescension in there.

I picked up my dad from dropping his truck at the dealership and while waiting for him a salesman came up and tried to convince me to sell him my Jeep. He told me how much work they were, how much trouble they were, what he thought was wrong with mine, and how if I ever decide that it’s “too much” that I need to call him despite me telling him that I like the challenge and won’t be selling it. Gave me his card and told me to put it in my glove box and keep it until I was ready to sell it (recently that card died in the center console).

Another time I went to the grocery store later at night (like 10pm) and when I was walking back to my car, the guy who had parked in front of me asked me if I was selling it. When I told him no, he ignored the answer and asked for a test drive (note that this is in the dark, later at night, and I was alone). I told him that I wasn’t giving him one and he ignored me again and asked me to give him a ride right then. When he ignored my answer for a third time I was thankfully in my Jeep, shutting the door and leaving. Wholly uncomfortable.

However when girls ask me if I’m selling my Jeep, it’s never been that. My current coworker just asked me if I could let her know if I decided to sell it because she loves it. I also haven’t had any issues within my Jeep club when it specifically comes to this and my ownership of my Jeep.

What it honestly comes down to is if you love your Jeep, you love it.

For all the frustrations my Jeep gives me, I love it. I can’t think of getting rid of it. I’ve learned so much and done so much in it. It’s an adventuring thing. It’s got so much character. Gas mileage might be terrible (for real though, it’s so bad), but there are reasons why they become iconic and why we love seeing them so much in things like Teen Wolf and Jurassic Park and why they resonate with us in this way even though we might not necessarily start off as car people.

For me, the forums were a little difficult to understand/get into in the beginning, so I hope this will help bridge that gap a bit for people like me.

Not sure how to begin but let's talk about why it is important if the narrative is really changing, what with Louis finally tweeting Harry after 4 years of sticking to not, or most probably after 4 years of being restricted. This story is not associated only to Harry and Louis but to every couple who hasn't fully came out to the public yet. This is for everyone, every pair, who has to love each other almost in silence because this world hasn't completely changed. This world hasn't fully accepted that homosexuality shouldn't be silent, shouldn't be any different. That I hope loving someone proudly is possible, regardless of your sexuality. Supporting Harry and Louis for four years now has been a tough, happy, heartbreaking, heartwarming and sweet ride since then. I've lived through watching the purity turned into restricted body language, the media perception, the struggles and perhaps, also on how they have always managed to make things loud and clear in their very own way. Strong is such an understatement if I have to describe the relationship that these two have always had in my opinion. And though this love kept me holding on, made me cry several times because it somehow represents the many other struggling couple (celeb or not), kept me smiling because they couldn't be more inlove after all these years, I still can't help but sometimes sit in silence for when everytime I deeply think about their situation. How it's like to belong to someone yet can't say it in public. To be smitten to someone yet can't fully express it and just.. you know.. be happy about it. With that as the subject, I remember throughout my support for equal love, back in 2014 when my sister introduced me to her workmate/friend Vin. My sister told me right away that Vin is openly gay to his friends, to his workmates, but closeted to everyone in his hometown. Like none of his family knew. And he, for some reasons just don't take that set-up to heart because his life is in the city anyway. He thinks he barely even visit his family back there, and even when he does, it would only lasts for about two to three days. I'm not usually a friendly person, but meeting him, I kind of became comfortable with him right away for he jokes around and is really cool about things. I remember my sister telling me that Vin has always joked about hating the responsibility of visiting hometown because he would have to be a MAN again. He would have to act tough and stuff to fit in to how his family sees him. He says he hated pretending to be a straight man but he has to. Everytime he was there with them, he would casually and lightly update my sister about the stress of pretending, as if he has somehow mastered it. But I guess it could be because he's just naturally a happy positive human, or that he simply don't mind the acting that much for in a matter of days he can be free again once back in the city. A few more encounter in some events and a few months later since being acquainted to me, I heard that he's started dating a newer guy. Let's call his new love interest, Art. At first I thought that Art will just be like one of those guys he goes out with only to be replaced after two months, (because Vin likes to show me photos of him and his current boyfriend and he never seemed serious in any of them) but I was wrong. Eventually me and my sister realized that Vin has never been this happy and committed? Has never been stick-to-one ever? And it's been months? And they're not just together but it came to a point where Art has gotten close to his friends too unlike his past boyfriends? And they live together? And they're domestic? And they have plans and dreams and mutual understanding? For the first time, Vin is sharing a relationship with someone he really loves, something that doesn't feel like it has an expiration date. Him and Art would sometimes go to our house just to chill with my sister, and you know, seeing them, and knowing that a huge part of Vin's life is unaware of this, his happiness, his other half, kind of aches my heart. I remember how they remind me of Harry and Louis. Vice versa, actually. In my mind since meeting them, everytime I blog I kind of considered them as an essential part. An example of how life really moves. That, if personally, I know a couple who wouldn't have been thought of as a couple at all by outsiders, a couple who has to hide at some point, how is that impossible for everyone else? How is it impossible that some people might just be hiding in their closets all this time? And while the story I just shared is in no way an actual proof that Harry and Louis have the same situation, or a proof that they are also indeed boyfriends, (because no that's not the point) I needed to share that. I needed to share how I witnessed Vin and Art interact for years since I met them. Because just two weeks ago, Art passed away. I was shocked because I haven't been that updated about them in the past few months since Vin transferred to a different company from the workplace she used share with my sister. All I know is that they're going strong. Until Vin called my sister to deliver the news. He was crying. He almost couldn't accept that Art's illness could be that serious that it could take Art away from him. That he would actually die. That this time would come that he had to say goodbye. That he had just been taken away from him. I didn't know further personal details of the death because I didn't ask my sister how Vin has been handling this and all. She's the friend, not me. But yeah my sister went to the funeral that happened last week, and my heart goes out to both of Vin and Art. I still cannot believe their fate, tbh. Shortly after that, I thought of looking at both of Vin and Art's social media accounts. And it broke my heart. They were so in love. They were so smitten. I found a few older posts in which they were sending each other indirect messages. Thanking each other. Congratulating each other. Simple stuffs that could have been more beautiful if only they were loud. But they weren't. They were sweet, yet silent, and limited. They couldn't even tag each other. And you won't understand what or for whom the message was meant unless you know who they are for each other, unless you know what they are to each other. And me being one of those, can't sleep tonight because I feel like life is unfair. Were they contented with that set-up? Were they happy enough or did they actually hoped things were a lot easier? That everyone knows what they are instead? It wasn't my relationship, but my heart aches nonetheless. After Art's passing, I saw Vin posted about how "life has only turned you into a beautiful memory" and I wonder how hard it is to move on from losing someone you didn't even get to share with the world? I think about the places he could have brought him but didn't because he wasn't allowed to? I feel like he could still be crying at night missing him and wishing they did everything when he was still alive? That he could have spent every moment with him if only he knew their time would be that short? It's so so sad. And I'm sorry. But this makes me all the more angry that society has to be like that. That people have to hide all because of their sexuality, or the sexuality of who they chose to love. It's fucked up. I hope we don't have to fight for lgbtqa+ rights for the rest of our lives until we get the acceptance and support. I hope no one has to live in silence. Life is too short. I don't want to hear more and more stories where they have waited forever to be free, that it feels forever, that it doesn't seem like it will ever end for them. I hope this world finally learns. The sooner the better.

WOAH DANG it’s super impressive that you’ve learned to manage multiple projects yourself! (I assume self-taught, which would make it all the more impressive.) That is such a great skill to have. At the end of that post, Joy links to her Ao3 which does include some AU fic of her own book that is not out yet because tumblr is lovingly relentless with sending her interesting prompt ideas that her brain runs off with if you want to get a feel for how she writes, but most of them are NSFW. Unfortunately, the one that's SFW and has all three main characters (The Crab Incident) is a body swap thing, so it can be confusing as an intro to the characters. >_>’ Liminal Space is SFW and funny, but only has two of the characters. (The Devil Went Down on Georgia is for another novel she has lined up for later, and doesn’t feature any Hunger Pangs characters.)

Joy does have little excerpts and such on her tumblr in her tags--phangs (used on relatively newer posts), hunger pangs (older, because she found out the tag gets used by tumblr at large for eating disorder glorification and she didn’t want to subject her followers to that if they followed the tag for her novel), and that vampire werewolf thing (generally older, but also still used now and then for newer stuff). Joy has mentioned she’s specifically putting in as much effort on writing the fluff as she is the smutty scenes they’ll replace, so there’s no loss in the dynamics the characters have if you want the SFW version, which is rad. Ahh … that time of year when the sun stays out longer and your gardens bloom stronger. When winter transitions to spring, many people start some significant cleaning projects. Don’t leave your dog out of this ritual. Your dog’s dishes, toys, bedding — and even your dog herself — can benefit from a spring-cleaning overhaul. Here’s how to get started.

Dog grooming must-dos

Create a grooming schedule and stick to it. “It is also very important to have dogs who are more likely to retain moisture/skin yeast, such as Cocker Spaniels and Bulldogs, start a routine bathing/haircut schedule during this time,” advises Samantha Hull, a professional groomer and program manager for the Animal Behavior College’s Grooming Instruction Program in Valencia, California.

Get grooming supplies specific for your dog.

“Spring is the seasonal shedding season. And all dogs shed their winter fur irrespective of coat length and texture,” says Sandy Robins, award-winning author and pet lifestyle expert based in Southern California. “This means different dogs have different shedding patterns. So one grooming plan doesn’t fit all. However, consider a spa day for your dog that includes a good brushing and a bath, and then another brushing with a tool such as a rubber curry brush — with big rubber teeth. It’s inexpensive but very effective, and most dogs love the gentle massage it gives. Different coats may require different tools, too, such as slicker brushes, combs and fine-tooth de-shedding tools and rakes. Plus, invest in a good shampoo and conditioner.”

If this seems overwhelming, don’t feel guilty if you need some help getting started. “Depending on your pooch’s coat type, it may be a good idea to have your dog groomed professionally to get rid of the winter hair,” Sandy says. “Then it’s easier to maintain and manage at home.”

Keep dogs well-brushed.

Not surprisingly, some dogs need a bit of extra care based on coat or breed. “We change our wardrobe when the seasons change; dogs change their coat,” explains Jorge Bendersky, Manhattan-based groomer and author of DIY Dog Grooming: From Puppy Cuts To Best In Show, Everything You Need To Know. “Dogs with a double coat will start shedding the dense winter undercoat for a fluffier and lighter undercoat that will allow more air to circulate, protecting the body from overheating. That’s why it is so important to keep dogs well-brushed.”

Don’t bring the outside inside.

Then there’s the type of grooming required because of more time spent outdoors. “Taking a nice long walk on a spring day is a healthy habit for pets and humans,” Jorge points out. “But bringing all those allergens into the house can be counterproductive. Cuddling with your dog after a walk is cuddling with a furball full of pollen. Wiping your dog with a damp washcloth or dog-friendly wipes is a good way to remove pollen and dust.”

And don’t stop at the coat. Jorge reminds owners that new plant growth in the spring can mean debris that can get stuck in your dog’s feet. “Checking them after your walk during the wipe-down process is a good routine to prevent any problems. Remember that most dogs only sweat through their pads and tongue, so keeping them clean is key for their heath.”

Worse yet are those little bloodsuckers. “The biggest thing I stress to clients during springtime is how imperative it is to check your pups for fleas and ticks,” Samantha says. “While preventives will stop your pup from an infestation, they can easily still be brought in and begin thriving on indoor pets, furniture or carpets.”

Clean those ears.

Ears also warrant some extra care. “Ear infections are becoming more and more common, and the transition to spring can cause ear problems,” says Melissa Gulbranson, vice president of marketing for Oxyfresh based in Idaho, which makes an ear cleaner for dogs. “We always recommend using an alcohol-free, sting-free, non-oil based solution to help soothe and clean ears, especially since dust mites seem to multiply as seasons change.”

Update your dog’s ID.

One last note about your dog and more outside time. The ASPCA’s website has this reminder: “Warmer weather means more trips to the park, longer walks and more chances for your pet to wander off! Make sure your dog or cat has a micro-chip for identification and wears a tag imprinted with your home address and any other relevant contact information.”

How to clean your dog’s stuff

When you start spring cleaning, set aside a few hours to focus on the items your dog uses daily.

Start with cleaning beds and toys.

“Winter time is tough on these items, and they probably have the smells to prove it,” Melissa says. “Use a nontoxic pet deodorizer to spray down dog beds and give them a fresh new smell. You can also use a nontoxic pet shampoo to wash bedding and toys. Stay clear of what we use for human clothes. The detergents are typically a bit too harsh for a pet’s sensitive skin.”

Samantha adds, “I always recommend to my clients that while their pups are with me, go home and clean their bedding, collars and doggie clothes that are used on them often. This includes areas they frequent in the home (couches, carpets, etc.). This ensures that the bath lasts longer because they don’t return to a dirty bed.”

Clean bedding can also mean healthier bedding. “Washing bedding not only refreshes the fabrics and removes stubborn pet hair but also eradicates dust mites, a common household allergen causing allergic reactions in pets,” Sandy says. “These miniscule mites live on dead skin cells and other detritus in house dust. Most pet beds have removable covers that can be machine-washed. And they should be done regularly — not necessarily only at springtime. Consider using a detergent that is recommended for babies to ensure that your pooch doesn’t have an allergic reaction to her clean bedding, too.”

How to deep clean your dog’s bowls.

While food and water bowls should also be cleaned regularly, this is a good time to give bowls a deep cleaning with a mild bleach solution or give them a ride in the dish washer. If your dog likes to chew on plastic bowls — perhaps to point out that you’re three minutes late feeding — it is the perfect time to replace them.

Inspect everything.

This is also the time to determine if you agree with Brave New World’s mantra of “ending is better than mending.” Check out your dog’s bed, blankets and toys to see if they are torn or overly frayed, potentially causing a safety issue.

“If you are amongst the ranks of pet parents who have thicker bedding options for the cold winter months, inspect them to see whether they need be washed before being packed away or simply replaced,” Sandy recommends. “If the padded area is flat and not offering comfort and support, throw it away.”

If you do find yourself shopping for a new dog bed, consider a couple features. For example, Sandy recommends getting senior dogs a bed with bolsters for a comfy head rest. And you will probably appreciate the ability to toss a cover into the washer instead of a whole bed.

Speaking of washers, Laura Pakis, CPT, blogger and owner and founder of Acme Canine in Columbus, Ohio, points out, “Newer dryers have a sanitize cycle, which is great for dog beds.”

Experts give additional tips on when to toss your dog’s other items, including putting yourself in their paws. “My rule of thumb is to simply ask, would I want to use/wear this?” Samantha asks. “If a collar is shredded, has an odor or shows extreme discoloration, its time for a new one. Not only does the smell/dirt rub off on the pup, a ripped or weakened collar can pose a serious threat to your dog, as well. It may fall off in the event that your pup gets out or even get caught on something in the home.”

The first sign is always smell, Melissa says. “If it smells similar to mildew, absolutely replace it. Collars can harbor bacteria because they are woven very tight, and we recommend replacing it each year, as it can cause neck irritation and introduce bacteria to the ears.”

Finally, check to make sure toys continue to bring joy, not dread. If they pose hazards, that isn’t fun for anyone. “Pitch dog toys that have developed sharp edges or have worn down to the point they are too small for dogs to safely have in their mouths,” Laura recommends. “Remove all threads that may appear on the toys after use. Dogs can ingest these and have stomach issues. Same for the ‘stuffing’ in dog toys.”

These tips are designed to make cleaning a little easier on you — and your dog — once spring has sprung. And remember — you don’t have to finish in one day. But then, it is nice to get it over with and get out with your furry friend to enjoy the fine weather.

Response to Can Apple Run out of ideas

This post will be dedicated to Blake’s post about, “Can Apple run out of ideas?”. And if I am going to be honest, I feel as if they have already a long time ago. With the past couple of new iPhone releases, there have not been any notable changes that really have opened my eyes making me want to buy the new iPhone especially for their price. Most of my friends are content their iPhone 6s and 7s as it provides almost all the same features as the newer iPhones with the exception of a better camera and a slightly faster processing chip. The people that I know that upgrade to the newest iPhone are people that only upgrade since it’s free due to their phone plan or because they are Apple diehards. And I feel like Apple does not even have to do anything too innovative or game changing due to their huge community and how mainstream they are. Blake brings up the idea that, “Apple has always been at the forefront of change and innovation, so I wonder if they ever feel threatened by others.” and I truly feel when Samsung releases the foldable phone (they just released this but at the cost of $1900) at a reasonable price before Apple does, it still won’t have as many people switch over as innovating and new as it is compared to the new changes that Apple has been releasing with their phones (slightly better camera, battery, and screen quality, none of which is worth its large price tag).

As for Blake’s other arguments regarding Apple changing the way we interact with the world in a sense for example by perhaps replacing, “credit cards… [since] Apple has released its own card.” is not that great of an example in my opinion. With the removal of the earphone jack with the iPhone 7, all other companies still use the headphone jacks and have not changed it. Perhaps the Apple diehard fans will use their Apple cards and terminate their accounts with all their other banks, but for the average consumer unless they do something really innovative there really is no incentive for credit cards to be replaced by Apple’s new card.

Perhaps, I may just be a skeptic and a hater for disliking the community that Apple has built but I just feel like you should be supporting a company that is innovating and new like Samsung. But ironically enough, I do have an iPhone and not a Samsung phone so perhaps I am too a part of that community and don’t want to admit it due to my personal opinions about them. I guess I just feel like Apple is mainly going for a monetary gain instead of the best interests of their consumers which makes sense as they are a company and want to make as much money as possible to please themselves and their investors. Perhaps one day as a Computer Science major, I can work for Apple and try to work towards more innovating ideas. :)

I had a good week. There are several new ui features and bug fixes, and webp and tiff now have basic support.

tiff and webp

Tiff files are now supported! Tiff is an old format typically used for photographic and scientific uses (think 12,000x12,000px images of the moon). They'll import to hydrus like any other image and will work on the duplicate file system. I tested 24bit and 8bit (monochrome), but could not find a 48bit example--even the easily accessible NASA stuff was all 24bit--so I don't know if high colour-depth tiffs work. If you have an example of one, please send it to me, and if it doesn't work in hydrus, I'll see if I can figure it out. EDIT: Some tiffs are not supported. I know basically what this is and will fix it for next week.

And webp files are now supported! Webp is a newer initiative from Google to replace jpgs and pngs. It has some impressive file size reductions, but hasn't picked up all that much yet. They'll now import to hydrus like any other image and will work on the duplicate file system. WebP also supports image-animations, much like gif, but I haven't written support for this yet. For now, hydrus will assume all webps are static images, and animations will only give you the first frame (just like how apngs used to import when hydrus considered them pngs).

I did not have to do all that much work to get tiff and webp working--I just hooked in my existing image libraries, PIL and OpenCV. If you run from source and have slightly older libraries here, your support may not be complete. I hope to keep working here and try to get animated webps working. If you are enthusiastic about webp, let me know how you get on--they mite b cool for some purposes, and if the library support for saving them is there, I might start using them in hydrus's thumbnail system, including for the long-planned animated thumbnail system.

otherwise all misc this week

Tag autocomplete search should be a bit quicker to update when you temporarily pause on a large search (e.g. if you pause on 'title:' and then type 'gar', the big laggy search for 'title:*' will now be cancelled much faster so the quicker 'title:gar*' can replace it).

Every one of the complicated 'copy' URL thumbnail menu entries is now replicated on the 'open' menu! So, if you select five files that all have twitter URLs, you can hit right-click->known urls->open->these files' twitter tweets to open them all in one go! It will open them one at a time, one per second, so as not to nuke your browser. If asked to open more than a few URLs like this, the client will warn you with a yes/no dialog and throw up a popup that will let you cancel the operation (just in case you accidentally try to open 500 URLs!).

By default, 'system:everything' is now hidden in search contexts with more than 10,000 files! This search predicate is sometimes useful to new users, but experienced users hit it more by accident than not. If you would rather have it anyway, you can force it to appear by hitting the new checkbox under options->default system predicates.

Gallery download pages now have a more informative 'status' column--they'll report gallery fetch status and say 'done!' when all work is complete.

After many attempts and some great help from users, I believe I have finally fixed the Linux 'similar files search with >0 distance' crash. One user and I managed to isolate the program area and figure out a cleaner layout, and it seems to be fixed. If you have had this problem, please give it a hesitant go and let me know what happens.

Also, I cleaned up some video rendering logic and memory management. Videos should render a little smoother and more responsively, and they will clean up after themselves better as well. This may have fixed a long-running but rare all-platforms crash related to launching or closing the media viewer on a playing video.

_all_ of the complicated 'copy url' commands from the thumbnail right-click->known urls menu are now available on the 'open' submenu! if there is more than one url to open (e.g. 'open all of these files blahbooru post urls' on a selection of 50 files), you will be presented with a yes/no dialog to confirm, and it will open one url in your browser every second (with a cancellable popup if num_urls > 5)

by default, system:everything is now hidden if its total files is >10k. you can force it to always show under options->default system predicates

the gallery downloader's list's status column now shows gallery status (deferring to active file status) when appropriate and shows 'done!' when all work is complete

after working back and forth with a user, I _believe_ the linux similar files >0 distance search crash is finally fixed

fixed sorting by media views/viewtiming with collections

a single-selected collection right-click now shows total media views for all files in the collection! you can now see how long you have been viewing an artist!

fixed an issue that lead to export folders not running on always-on clients as often as they should

updated the gelbooru 0.2.5 file page parser to pull rating tag from the correct location (previously, it was pulling from what appears to be a site-wide 'mature' browser hint)

improved memory cleanup stability when animations and other parts of the video rendering pipeline are deleted--this _may_ fix some rare crashes

increased animation rendering aggression overall and particularly in 'future' of frame buffer

if a video renderer that is asked to start some way into the video fails to render anything, it will now fall back to trying to render from the beginning. this is slightly hacky atm and leads to out of phase rendering frames, but it is better than an error

added a '--no_db_temp_files' launch parameter that will force the client or server to return to the recent old behaviour of exclusively using memory for journalling. this is useful if your temp directory is small and/or your available ram is very large. if running in this mode, the client will attempt to check available memory (instead of free space on your temp dir) before performing very large transactions

with the new lighter-weight update transactions, the client now tests for less free space for journalling before running repository update processing

added /get_files/search_files to the client api, which does the first half of file searching. it allows tag search (including -tag negation) and system inbox/archive. since the second half, which will fetch file metadata, is not yet in, this can't do anything interesting yet

updated help and unit tests to support this, client api version is now 3

I got the first half of Client API file search done this week, but it is useless without the other half, so that's the top priority next week.

Also, after thinking about it a bit and talking with some users, I am going to try changing my schedule just a little. I always enjoy stability and cleanup work, and I am happy I found time recently to do some more, but it is often difficult to remember this kind of work with the pressure of a hundred smaller (and often sexier) jobs. With this in mind, I will try having a rotating schedule where I do one week focusing on stability and cleanup (including improving unit tests), one on larger ongoing work (like the recent autocomplete async work and the thumbnail experiment last week), and two on regular smaller jobs (like most of what I did this week). I'll go cleanup, small, ongoing, small. I will still work on bugs and the 'big job' as normal every week, but the rest of my time will be more focused on one thing. This will force me to spend at least some time on each important area every month without turning my week inside out trying to cram a bit of everything in.

Anyway, I'm going to give that a go and see how it feels. I will do cleanup next week. There are a ton of broken unit tests that need catching up to current code, and I'd love to move forward the listctrl object replacement. Both of these are boring as anything and have been put on the back burner, so let's see if I can concentrate next week and move them forward!

Niche Site Project 4 Monthly Report for November 2018

Niche Site Project 4 continues to roll on! Over the past few months, I’ve been working diligently on my site and today I’ll be sharing the results for the previous month (November).

In some regards, I was able to accomplish some big things for my site; in other aspects, I didn’t accomplish everything that I wanted to.

So, overall, I’ll be reporting on my traffic, earnings, and strategies. In addition, I’ll be sharing the report from dozens of other people that are participating in Niche Site Project 4 at the end of this post.

Let’s get started!

Niche Site Project 4 Timeline

As a reminder, I wanted to share what has happened in the project so far.

So, as you look at this timeline, you will see that as of 12/10/2018 it will have been 3 months since the first article was published. In the grand scheme of things this is not very long at all…but it FEELS like a long time.

I probably shouldn’t be checking the stats and rankings daily.

Traffic and Earning Results for November

Because this is a public project, I wish things were happening faster. However, I also realize that it’s been less than 3 months since I published the very first article, and most articles have only been on the site for a month or two.

If this wasn’t a public project, I wouldn’t be concerned at all. But only because I have to share everything so openly, I know the progress of my site is being tracked by thousands of people!

Rankings and earnings for niche sites take time. So, overall I don’t have any major concerns.

Earnings

Proof that I didn’t make any money! :). I’m getting some Amazon affiliate links, but no buyers just yet.

Traffic

The trend in traffic was a bit better than my earnings for November.

The yellow bar represents November compared to previous months. Organic, Social, and Total sessions all increased on the site…great news! Always nice when things are at least moving in the right direction.

In fact, when I look at total sessions, the traffic more than doubled from October to November! I know the numbers are still so small, but seeing a 109% increase in traffic in one month is a small win.

Again, I know the numbers are small…but this is the case for every new site. However, the above line is the type of thing you want to see with a new site.

Now, here’s the raw data for just November.

The spike for 3 days that you see around Nov 26 – Nov 28th was a small experiment I did with FB ads. I spent about $50 and drove traffic to a massive pillar article that I had just completed.

I wanted to see if this would get the article indexed quicker (it did), and wanted to see if any traffic from FB would buy some products through my affiliate links (they didn’t). However, this experiment did give me some ideas that I’ll explain in a bit.

The other spikes that you see in the graph are mostly from Pinterest.

What Was Accomplished in November?

November had some ups and downs. As with any website, it can sometimes be hard to find consistent writers.

I eliminated 2 writers in November and have finally replaced them near the end of the month. As a result, the content production was down considerably more than I had hoped.

Overall, only 7 articles were written for the month. However, one of these articles was a MASSIVE pillar article of nearly 13,000 words long! I think this is the longest article I’ve ever published on one of my sites.

However, this article is going to be a central topical theme for my site that I’m hoping established my topical authority. For the next few months, most of the content on my site will revolve around this pillar article.

I now have 4 authors for the site that I believe will start producing content on a more consistent basis.

Plans for Future Growth

Overall, the model hasn’t changed. I plan to continue ramping up content with the knowledge that over time Google with start indexing and ranking my content better. This increased organic traffic will lead to more people buying products through my affiliate links.

However, I’m really interested in getting on the “earnings board”. Maybe I’m just overly competitive (or impatient), but I hate posting results that don’t have any earnings associated with them.

As a result, I plan to start building an email list and start monetizing that list ASAP. The problem is that my site doesn’t get many visitors, so building a list through the traffic coming to my website is likely not going to build a list that moves the needle.

So, here’s my plan in a nutshell:

Build an email list as quickly as possible through giveaways and contests using sources off my website. I’ll start with FB ads that have a “viral” component. This means I’ll spend some money to start getting the giveaways noticed, but the “viral” aspect will come as people share the post, tag friends, and email people they know.

As people join, I’ll email them multiple times per week with products or deals in the niche they would be interested in. Since I can’t send people from an email to an Amazon page, I’ll have them go to a landing page or article on my website.

I’ll make money through affiliate commissions.

I’ve done contests and giveaways that have generated several thousand leads in a week, so the potential is there to build a decent list in a “short” period of time.

The key will be two things:

Building a list of people that are interested in the same niche as my website.

Emailing these people 3 to 5 times a week with offers or other content that keeps the list “warm”.

The benefit of doing all of this is 3 things:

The more people I get on my list and the more I email them, the more likely I am to earn money.

As I generate traffic to my articles using sources outside of Google (my email list), I believe that Google does take notice and starts crawling your site more often which can lead to improved indexing and rankings.

If I do future contests or giveaways, I won’t have to spend as much on ads because I’ll already have an email list I can “launch” it to. As these existing email subscribers share, like, and get their friends on my email list…I get lots of new subscribers.

Now, all of this is easier said than done, but I’m going to give it a shot this month! I’ve seen great results in the past with similar attempts, so I hope you don’t mind me adding this “wrinkle” to the project.

Converting HTML Sites to WordPress Sites

In the beginning (of the web) all websites were made with nothing but text and static HTML. Now though, over 20 years later, the web is a much different place. Websites are much more complex. They provide richer and more enjoyable experiences for site creators and visitors alike.

This is in large part thanks to open source projects like WordPress. Which, over the last ten years or so, has succeeded in its core mission to democratize online publishing (and a lot more in the process) so that anyone with a WordPress install and the right theme/plugins can have a modern website with advanced design and functionality. No coding–not even HTML!–required.

This is why to avid WordPress users like myself, it’s almost hard to believe that in 2018 someone might still be operating a static HTML website instead of a WordPress website with a theme and plugins. But the fact is there are still a significant amount of active HTML only sites out there. (Or HTML with a bit of CSS.)

Granted, these site owners may have good reasons for not upgrading or converting. Maybe their site content never changes and the simple formatting and design already in place is serviceable? Or maybe it’s less of a hassle than worrying about keeping a WordPress site updated? Both are valid reasons (among others). Prime examples of, “Don’t fix what isn’t broken.”

However, I have a feeling that these might not be the primary reason some (perhaps many) haven’t made the leap. The most obvious one being that they simply don’t know how to convert their HTML site into a WordPress site. Especially without losing content or needing to do excessive formatting on a page by page basis.

Thankfully, as is often the case with WordPress, there are a number of ways to go about solving this problem. I’ve compiled some options below.

Your Options for Converting a Static HTML site to a WordPress site

How you choose to convert your static HTML site into a WordPress site will no doubt depend upon your personal preference, desired time/monetary investment, and skill level with code. You will have to be the one to decide which is best for you, but with the summaries below you should be able to decide quickly and skip straight to the most relevant information in this post for your specific situation.

There are three main options:

1. Manually create a WordPress theme based on your current static HTML site.

This will require you to get into your code. You will have to access your current site directory via FTP and use your existing code as a starting point. From there you will need to create the necessary files for a WordPress theme and copy bits of code from the WordPress codex. This is fairly simple and straight forward if you have some experience with HTML, CSS, and a bit of PHP.

2. Install a pre-made theme and simply migrate your content.

This is probably the best option at the intersection of simplicity and value. Assuming you already have hosting for your current website, you will only need to spend money if you choose to purchase a premium theme. The plugin we will use for importing content is freely available in the official WordPress Plugin Repository.

3. Paying to have an HTML to WordPress conversion service re-create your site.

This is the easiest solution, as it doesn’t require you to do much of anything. However it will not do much for familiarizing you with WordPress and the cost will vary depending on who you choose to hire. I won’t be covering this option in the sections below because if this is the route you are interested in, you can simply do a quick search for service providers and they will take care of the rest.

Preparing for HTML to WordPress Conversion

No matter which route you decide to take below, there are a few things you will want to do before diving in.

The first is choosing a hosting plan. You’ll want to look over the options that are out there and decide on a package that best fits your needs. Or perhaps you’d like to create a local WordPress installation instead? You can always migrate it to a hosting service later.

Once you’ve chosen, you will need to install WordPress and log into WP Admin. This is the point at which our two possible paths divide.

Manually Converting Your Static HTML Site to WordPress

If your goal is to not only get your content from your static HTML site into WordPress but also duplicate your current design, this means you will need to create your own custom theme. Thankfully, that is not as scary as it might sound at first. It only involves creating a few folders and files, a bit of copy and paste, and then uploading the result.

You’re going to need a code editor such as Sublime or Notepad++ and access to both your HTML site’s directory and your new WordPress install’s directory.

Step 1: Create a New Theme Folder and Necessary Files

On your desktop, create a new folder to hold your theme files. Name it whatever you’d like your theme to be named.

Next, create a few files (which all go in your new theme folder) in your code editor. Don’t do anything to them just yet. Just leave them open for further editing.

Style.css

Index.php

header.php

sidebar.php

footer.php

Step 2: Copy Existing CSS Into New Stylesheet

If you’re looking to duplicate a design, this probably means you have at least some CSS that you want to save. So the first file you’re going to want to edit is your Style.css file.

To begin, add the following to the top of your file.

After this section simply paste your existing CSS below. Save and close the file.

Step 3: Separate Your Current HTML

Before we get into step three, let me give you a quick note on how WordPress works. WordPress uses PHP to call and retrieve pieces of data from its underlying database. Each file that we’re using in this little tutorial is designed to tell WordPress which part of your site content is to be displayed and where.

So when I say we are going to “chop up” your existing HTML, what we’re actually doing is simply cutting and pasting parts of your existing code into the different files we’ve just created, so that WordPress will know where to display them.

Here we go.

First, open your current site’s index.html file. Highlight everything from the top of the file to the opening div class=”main” tag. Copy and paste this section into your header.php file, save and close.

Second, go back to your index.html file. Highlight the aside class=”sidebar” element and everything inside it. Copy and paste this section into your sidebar.php file, save and close.

Third, in your index.html select everything after your sidebar and copy and paste it into your footer.php file, save and close.

Finally, in your index.html file, select everything that’s left (this should be the main content section) and paste it into your index.php file. Save, but do not close yet.

You can close your index.html file now however and move on to the final steps. Almost done!

Step 4: Finalize Your Index.php File

In order to finalize your new theme’s index.php file you need to make sure it can call up the other section (besides the main content) that are housed in the other files you’ve created. Or in other words, put back together the elements we just “chopped up”.

At the very top of your index.php file, place the following line of php.

<?php get_header(); ?>

Then, at the very bottom of your index.php file, place these lines of php.

<?php get_sidebar(); ?> <?php get_footer(); ?>

And finally, we have to add what’s called The Loop. This is the primary bit of php that WordPress uses to display your post content to visitors. So the final step in creating your new theme’s index.php file is adding the code below within the content section.

Save your index.php and close. You’re theme is now finished! All that’s left is to upload it to your WordPress website.

Step 5: Upload Your New Theme

Now that you’ve created your theme files and have them all stored within your new theme folder, you’re going to need to access your new WordPress install’s directory.

Place your new theme folder inside /wp-content/themes/. Then navigate back to WP Admin > Appearance > Themes and your newly created theme should appear there. Go ahead and activate it!

All that’s left to do at this point is populate your new WordPress website with your old site’s content. Follow along with the section below (skipping over the part about using a pre-made theme) to see how that is done.

Using a Pre-Made WordPress Theme and Importing HTML Content

If the steps above seem too intensive or time consuming to you then rest assured, there is another way. Instead of converting whatever design you happen to be working with right now into a WordPress theme, you can take advantage of any one of the thousands of themes available in the broader WordPress marketplace.

There are free themes and there are premium themes. Before deciding which is best for you, you may want to read up on which themes are designed to cater to your needs and browse by theme category here at Elegant Themes and elsewhere.

Once you’ve chosen a theme you like (and have its zipped file package downloaded) you’ll want to head back to WP Admin > Appearance > Themes > Add New and install/activate your new WordPress theme.

Once this is done, you will have a new WordPress website and theme–but little else. When you preview your site, it will be empty of content and probably look sort of boring. That’s ok, because next we are going to import your old site’s content.

In WP Admin go to Plugins > Add New and search for a plugin called HTML Import 2 by Stephanie Leary. Once this plugin is installed and activated, follow its handy user guide to import your entire directory of HTML pages. Complete with images!

After this you will have all of your old content living on WordPress and formatted by your new theme. Or, if you created your own theme above, your site should pretty much look like it did before–just running on WordPress.

"How much should I expect to get from my insurance company?

My car was totaled off. It was a 96 Suzuki Esteem. It was rebuilt after a previous total loss. Its in decent condition externally and it ran fine until the most recent accident. There is however a small hole in the front bumper from where I hit a hitch of a truck. They have deducted 600$ from what they are willing to pay me for my car.
