Conversation Pit
a GIF commission for Rhizome and GIPHY
Description: “This GIF is a ghost story, a void of failed Feng Shui. Like the mock-up renderings created by contractors when a new home or public space is being built; unnatural spills of light and perspectives make very little sense when human images are implemented. Structurally palatial architecture harking back to a vapid but inornate Rococo interior. You’re seeing just the smallest snippet of a labyrinthian, suburban American home; needlessly sprawling but spiritually claustrophobic. Inanimate objects working as sponges of extreme human emotion, fumbling to grasp at a sense of comfort and status via possessions and excess. An “if these walls could talk” scenario with the tension softened, reckoned with by digestible cartoon depictions of manmade sadness and profitable unease. One of the many Pyramids erected in the Pyramid Scheme of Western Exceptionalism, the ones getting emptier, decaying every day. All this is a vulnerable, subconscious projection, haunting not only what occupies the home, but how the home ultimately functions.”

Recently, Rhizome accessioned 22 artist-made Tumblrs into the Artbase, their online archive of born-digital artworks. To celebrate, Rhizome Co-director Michael Connor will be chatting with Christopher Clary, Cat Frazier (@animatedtext), Molly Soda (@mollysoda), and writer Larissa Pham (@larissa-pham)— contextualizing the selected works within the larger story of Tumblr, and exploring perspectives on the site's history and its importance to artists.

Wangechi Mutu: Intertwined at New Museum
The photographs don’t capture the scale of these pieces. The first two are from an imposing set of close to human scale figures. The natural materials of soil and hair give them a believability despite the alien appearance. The bronze works are monumental in scale.
Would be awesome to see her work in public spaces someday.

Spotlight: Faith Ringgold
92-year-old Faith Ringgold is arguably one of the most consequential African American artists of her generation, well-known for her paintings, mixed-media sculpture, performance work, and especially for her narrative quilts. A year ago, February 17, 2022, the New Museum in New York opened the retrospective exhibition “Faith Ringgold: American People,” the most comprehensive survey to date of the work of Faith Ringgold, whose groundbreaking art and political activism span more than sixty years.
These images are from the catalog of that exhibition, also titled Faith Ringgold: American People, edited by Massimiliano Gioni and Gary Carrion-Murayari and published in New York by Phaidon Press in 2022. The catalog features 11 essays by prominent writers and an interview with the artist, and covers work from all periods of Ringgold’s career, including her early civil rights-era figurative paintings, her graphic political protest posters, and her signature experimental story quilts.

Neues Bauhaus Museum Weimar - 2. Preis ex aeqou
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Internationaler Wettbewerb mit 536 Teilnehmern, 2012
2. Preis ex aequo (1. Preis wurde nicht vergeben)
Entwurf: Klaus E. Krauss, Berlin
mit Rolf Kursawe, Köln und
Dipl.-Ing. Rolf Teloh (urban essences, Berlin), Dipl.-Ing. Anette Hartung ( Lichtplanung Hartung, Köln), Dipl.-Ing. Johannes Römer (Thor Bauphysik, Bergisch Gladbach), Dipl.-Ing. Frank Luckau (Luces Ingenieure, Pulheim), Dipl.-Ing. Kim Leiermann (KL Brandschutz), Studentischer Mitarbeiter Christian Wabbel

Forgive my amateur shots but I really enjoyed the lighting and shadow in the staging of these earlier pieces.

David Hammons, A Fan (1989), installed in 1990 at PS1 (L) and in 1989 at the New Museum (R). A black table contains a white lady mannequin turned toward a TV and VCR playing a 1963 interview with Malcolm X, and a palm fan. Funeral flowers ride shotgun.
