* VERSE:  BN/HA.      SUBJECT:  BACKSTORY.
Daniel’s family is poor,  and lives in the less affluent outskirts of Musutafu.  Their neighborhood isn’t the safest,  but for the most part they didn’t cause trouble,  so trouble didn’t come knocking at their door.  Until his father got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.  He came home with broken arms.  Daniel was seven,  but he knew who was to blame.  It wasn’t a secret that villains lurked in the streets near where he lived.  A few days later,  he soaked a ball of ice in gasoline,  set it on fire,  and slingshotted it through the window of one of their fronts.  A perfect crime,  but was it really even a crime if he was acting against villains ?
Less than a year later,  on Daniel’s eighth birthday,  his dad left much earlier than usual for work.  Curious,  he followed to ask why,  but his dad told him he needed to get back inside and tell his mom that he loves her.  They never saw him again.
He got bolder,  despite his older brother’s efforts to curb his rebellious streak.  When trouble passed by,  he didn’t avert his gaze — he locked eyes with it.  When they pushed him down,  the next time he made sure they couldn’t.  After two years,  his defiance finally came back to bite him.  On his way back home from school,  the villains jumped him.
Details for his time in captivity are very trigger heavy  ( warnings include torture,  human experimentation,  needles/injections,  general blood/violence )  so in an effort to keep this post clean for everyone to read,  I won’t write it out here.  If you do want to know exactly what he went through,  read the second paragraph of the TRIAL section of his canon story and substitute the hospital for an abandoned building  ( there are also no additional subjects,  just Daniel ).
It wasn’t until the next morning that he was reported missing.  When John told the police which group that was probably behind it,  pro heroes were mobilized.  By the time they found the location,  Daniel wasn’t inside.  They found him a few blocks away,  which was as far as he could limp before he couldn’t take the pain.  After a lot of coaxing,  he agreed to go to a hospital and was then reunited with his family.
Following that incident,  he set his sights on being a pro hero.  To do that,  he aimed to get into UA,  and put all his energy into studying,  especially after John was rejected when Daniel was eleven.  It took a couple years for his limp to fade to a somewhat more manageable state,  but even before it faded,  he tried to get back on his feet,  much to his family’s disapproval.  He ignored them,  knowing studying meant nothing if he failed the physical portion of the exam.
Once he was fifteen,  he was practically back to where he used to be physically.  The limp was barely noticeable anymore.  And his studying paid off too;  he went into the written exam confident of every answer.  Daniel ended up passing both portions and landing himself in UA’s hero class 1-A.  His hero name is DAY.
