My son has been beating me at nearly every matching game since he was three years old. In fairness to me, he has been beating most people since he was three. In fact, no one would play memory games with him at his Montessori preschool because he beat everyone all the time, students and teachers. We turn as much of his school work as possible into concentration memory games to capitalize on this strength.
So you can imagine how surprised we were today when I beat him twice at a memory game we have been playing for years, “Never Forget a Face.” We also tied a couple of games. It felt as though the earth vibrated underneath us, and we lost our bearings for awhile. At first, he thought something was off in him, but it became pretty clear to both of us that it was me who was different. I was playing much better than I usually do. We were both pretty stunned by my increased capacity.
In general, my anxiety levels are down due to my mindfulness practice, so I have more room in my brain to do many things. It is easier to think. Furthermore, I wasn’t thinking too hard and second guessing myself the way I usually do when I play games. I was working from instinct on where the matches to the cards were. I almost understood what my son said to us once about his incredible memory game skills. We asked him how he could remember the matches and he replied, “When I turn over a card, it tells me where the other one is.”
The best part about today, besides winning a couple of rounds, was that I had a lot of fun with my son. As it turns out, being calmer and more at peace with myself helps me enjoy my dear boy much more. I think it helps him enjoy me more too. Win - win.
