there's a part of me that still thinksa bortion is murder. i act like i support it to fit in but deep down i dont. please just listen. i think forcing someone to go through a pregnagncy they don't want is inhuman but it also feels inhuman to kill a baby and i dont like thsi idea that if youre 4 weeks pregnant and you want it its a baby but if youre 4 week pregnant and dont want it then its just a clump of cells thats just not how scence works. so theres this woman who was forced to get an .

No worries at all! I don't think you're a bigot and I'm glad that you want to engage with this issue critically. I'm happy to give you the facts as they stand and offer you my perspective on the issue. Apologies in advance that this is a bit long, but please try to stick with me until the end! All of this is important in understanding the different sides of this discussion.

There are a few main categories I want to talk about in this answer: legal, science, politics, and culture. For now, I'm going to avoid delving into any religious or metaphysical questions about what is and isn't considered "a person", since while those conversations are interesting, I don't think they're particularly useful in the context of discussions about abortion. As Harry Blackmun wrote in the court opinion for Roe v. Wade, "we need not resolve the difficult question of when life begins. When those trained in the respective disciplines of medicine, philosophy, and theology are unable to arrive at any consensus, the judiciary, at this point in the development of man's knowledge, is not in a position to speculate."

Legality

Starting with legal issues, there are a few points I think it's important to make in order to get a sense of how we relate to abortion. Abortions are legal in 98% of countries. 34% of countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand most European countries, and China, allow abortions on the basis of a the pregnant person's request, without needing to prove that there is risk to life, risk to health, risk to the fetus, economic or social reasons that abortion is a necessity, or extenuating circumstances (such as the pregnancy being a product of rape or incest). The vast majority (93%) of countries with highly restrictive abortion laws, such as outlawing abortion except in cases where the pregnant person is endangered, are in developing regions. There are five countries that completely outlaw abortion. These are: Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Malta, Nicaragua, and the Vatican City, all countries where the Catholic church has significant influence.

Of the countries that do allow abortion, there is always a limit on how far into a pregnancy a person can be when they choose to terminate. Beyond that limit, the person doesn't have a choice anymore, and must carry the pregnancy to term (except in extenuating circumstances). The most common limit is 12 weeks (3 months), although some countries allow abortion up to the point of "viability", where the fetus can live outside the mother's womb with artificial aid. Typically, the point of viability is around 24 weeks (6 months). In the US, 87% of abortions are performed before 12 weeks, and 92.2% were performed at 13 weeks or fewer. For reference, pregnancies are typically around 40 weeks long.

Forced abortion is illegal in almost every country, including the US and the UK, and it is considered an act of violence against women. It is just as bad as forcing someone to give birth, which is why all countries do their best to prevent it from happening. While forced abortions can and do happen, particularly to victims of sex trafficking, I think the solution to this issue is to put policies into place that protect vulnerable women, instead of trying to ban abortion entirely.

Science

So, most countries allow abortions up to 12 weeks. What does that actually look like in terms of the fetus? Here's a timeline of fetal stages of growth:

Weeks 1-4: at this stage, the "baby" is actually an embryo. It starts out as just a fertilized egg. The amniotic sac forms around it, and the placenta develops. The eyes, mouth, lower jaw, and throat are in very early development. Blood cells are taking shape. By the end of week 4, the embryo is smaller than a grain of rice. It is very literally "just a clump of cells" at this point.

Weeks 5-9: the "baby" is still an embryo. Its facial features begin to develop, folds of skin that will eventually become ears grow, tiny buds that will eventually grow into arms and legs form, the neural tube, digestive tract, and sensory organs all begin to develop. Bone starts to replace cartilage. At about 6 weeks, a heart beat can be detected. After week 8, the baby is considered a fetus instead of an embryo, at which point the fetus is about one inch long.

Weeks 9-12: the fetus' arms, hands, fingers, feet, and toes are fully formed. It may be able to open and close its fists and mouth. Ears are formed, and its reproductive organs begin to develop. By the end of week 12, the fetus has all of their organs and limbs, and their circulatory and urinary systems are working, but everything needs to continue to develop in order to become functional. At the end of week 12, the fetus is about 4 inches long.

It is important to know that the miscarriage rate is highest in the first trimester (before week 12). Among women who know they're pregnant (typically further along than 6 or 7 weeks), 10-20% will miscarry. 30%-50% of all fertilized eggs miscarry.

Other important developmental markers include:

During month 4 (weeks 16-20), you can see the sex of the fetus.

During month 5 (weeks 20-24), the fetus starts moving around.

Between week 22 and week 24, brain waves appear in the cerebral cortex.

At week 24, the fetus may be able to survive if it is born prematurely, provided it has intensive care.

Somewhere between week 26 and week 30, the fetus may be able to feel pain, although we don't know that for sure.

A fetus is not capable of thinking, communicating, reasoning, self-motivation, feeling emotions, or consciousness. They don't have a concept of the self, and they don't know that they exist. They are essentially sedated for the entirety of the pregnancy. Since we use "brain death" as the primary criteria for death, it makes sense to me that we might consider "brain life" (the point where a fetus exhibits brain activity) as the point at which a fetus becomes a person.

While some people will refer to an embryo as a "baby" from the time they discover they're pregnant, scientifically, it is a clump of cells, whether that clump is allowed to continue to grow or not. It's not something we would recognize as a baby, or be able to interact with as if it were a baby. An embryo is a precursor to a baby, kind of like how a seed is a precursor to a plant.

Some other arguments

I want to quickly touch on some other arguments for abortion rights that people make. I'm not going to delve deeply into them, but it didn't feel right to leave them out entirely. These are arguments that don't depend on whether or not a fetus can be considered a person.

Bodily Rights

There are many situations in which we prioritize individual bodily rights over the right of someone else to live. For example, we don't force people to donate organs to people who are dying, even though a donated organ would save their life. Advocates for abortion rights argue that those same bodily rights should be extended to a pregnant person.

Deprivation

This argument usually looks something like, "but what if that fetus was going to cure cancer when it grew up!" Basically, it's saying that abortion is morally wrong because it deprives the fetus (and the world) of a valuable future. To me, this completely ignores the deprivation that already exists by forcing a person to carry and birth a baby they don't want, and potentially the deprivation that comes with raising that child. People who make this argument never seem to ask, "what if the pregnant person was going to cure cancer?"

Slippery Slope

Some people argue that normalizing and legalizing abortion may lead to people also accepting euthanasia. I am unconvinced by this for two reasons. 1. Slippery slope is a logical fallacy and 2. I absolutely do think we should legalize euthanasia for certain situations.

Religion

I don't want to dig too far into this one, but what I will say is that the US is a country that (at least nominally) has a separation of church and state, and the religious beliefs that other people hold should not infringe on a person's rights to make choices about their own life.

History and Politics

The practice of abortion itself is incredibly old. The Sanskrit epic Ramayana, which dates to the 7th century BCE, describes abortion being practiced by surgeons and barbers. In the Assyrian Code of Assura, circa 1075 BCE, a woman is allowed to procure an abortion except when it's against her husband's wishes. The first recorded evidence of induced abortion is from the Egyptian Ebers Papyrus in 1550 BCE. Japanese documents show records of induced abortion from as early as the 12th century, and it became more prevalent during the Edo period. It is considered to be unlikely that abortion was punished in Ancient Greece or ancient Rome. All major Jewish religious movements allow abortion in order to save the life or health of a pregnant woman, and often support abortion for other reasons as well. Christianity has a more complicated relationship to abortion, for reasons that I'll go into in a bit, but for now let's just note that there very much were ancient Christians who believed abortion was morally permissible at least some of the time. Before the 19th century CE, first-trimester abortion was widely practiced and was legal under common law throughout the English speaking world, including the US and UK.

The reason I bring all of this up is because the political debate over abortion isn't really that old, and the debate tends not to actually be about the morality of abortion as an act so much as it is a proxy for other issues. The first backlash against abortion in the English Speaking world was in the 19th century, and was a direct reaction to the women's rights movement, which was starting during that time. In the US, anti-abortion laws began to appear as early as the 1820s, but picked up in earnest by the late 1860s. These laws were introduced for many reasons, including the fact that abortions were being provided by untrained people who were not members of medical societies and concerns about the safety of abortifacients. By 1900, abortion was a felony in every US state, but they continued to become increasingly available. By the 1930s, licensed physicians performed an estimated 800,000 abortions a year.

Jumping forward a little bit, let's talk about the history of abortion in the US just before Roe v. Wade. It's estimated that in the 50s and 60s, between 200,000 to 1.2 million abortions were being performed per year, even though they were illegal. Throughout that same time, the second wave feminist movement was growing, and was increasingly advocating for birth control and liberalized abortion laws. As a reaction to second wave feminism, a number of anti-abortion organizations, primarily led by Catholic institutions, cropped up to mobilize against the legalization of abortion. It should be noted that, at the time, abortion was not an issue for evangelical Christian groups. In the 1960s, 17 states legalized abortion for a variety of different circumstances. Then in 1973, Roe v. Wade happens, ruling that a pregnant woman has the right to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction. The ruling was 7-2 in favor of legalizing abortion. Even after Roe v. Wade, Christian Evangelicals were neutral to positive on the ruling. It's only after 1980 that Evangelical Christians started to organize around abortion as a political issue and joined the Catholics to form what we now think of as the Christian Right. There's a lot to say about that and why that switch happened, but for the sake of brevity, just know that the evangelical backlash against legalized abortion in the US started not as a moral crusade, but as a way of convincing people to vote for Ronald Regan instead of Jimmy Carter (who wanted to de-segregate schools). No political debate happens in a vacuum, and it's important to understand what other factors might have been at play when looking at where these debates come from and how the sides formed.

Culture

Lastly, let's talk a little bit about the cultural impacts of banning or legalizing abortion. The right to have or not have a child is necessary in order for women to achieve equality with men. Countries with high gender equality, such as Iceland, Finland, Norway, New Zealand, and Sweden, also have easily accessible abortion options. Criminalization of abortion disproportionately impacts poor women and women of color, and does nothing to address the systemic issues that may cause them to require abortions in the first place.

Researchers from the WHO and University of Massachusetts found that banning abortion is an inefficient way to reduce abortion rates; in countries where abortions were restricted, the number of unintended pregnancies actually increased, and the proportion of unintended pregnancies ending in abortion also increased. When abortion is banned, women aren't not having abortions; they're having illegal abortions that are done unsafely.

There is also some evidence to suggest that legalized abortion actually decreases crime rates. 20 years after the legalization of abortion in the US, there was an unprecedented nationwide decline of the crime rate (including murders, incidentally). The drop in crime is thought by some to be a result of the fact that individuals who had a higher statistical probability of committing crimes (people who grew up as unwanted children in poverty) were not being born.

Which brings me to my next point- the majority of people who are "pro-life" (at least in the US) aren't really pro-life. They're pro-birth. If they were truly pro-life, they would be interested in making sure that all of those babies had their needs met after they're born. They would be interested in making sure those babies can lead long, healthy, safe, and productive lives. They would be for universal healthcare, expanded social safety nets, parental leave from jobs, universal basic income, raising the minimum wage, mandated vacation time, increasing funding for public schools, decriminalizing drugs, abolishing prisons or at least reforming the police. They would be against the death penalty (ironically, some of them are actually for the death penalty for women who have had abortions), and for increased access to birth control, comprehensive sex-ed in schools, increased gun legislation, against war and nuclear weapons, for enforced mask wearing to prevent people from needlessly dying from a global pandemic... but those issues don't factor into their "pro-life" stance. They're for "the baby gets born and then has to pull itself up by its bootstraps like the rest of us."

Closing Thoughts

Look. I'm not super jazzed about abortions. I understand how they can feel like an ethical issue. I think we should do what we can to reduce the number of abortions that are performed- teaching comprehensive sex-ed in schools, making birth control and emergency contraceptive options widely accessible, letting men know that reversible vasectomies are an option. I think we should make abortion easier to access, so those who do need it can make the decision early in the pregnancy. But I also think that it's a very personal decision, one that's irreversibly life altering, and the person who's going to experience the life altering event should be the one who decides what happens. 65 year old conservative, Christian white men who will never be pregnant (and frequently don't really know how the female body works) shouldn't get to make that decision for them. As someone for whom pregnancy would be life threatening, I want to know that I have options should that situation present itself someday.

i began to write in general since i was around 14 like any other emo kid kdjdjsks and o began to write fics when a friend asked me for one as a birthday present. it was written in a hurry and it’s not my favorite but i really enjoyed doing it. i posted that exact same fic on their birthday

2. which of your characters do you typically resonate most closely with? do you base any characters off of yourself?

it depends the fic i guess. and not really, i think the closest i’ve been to do that is in the rockstar au (coming to the @bottomlouisficfest very soon), i put one or two of my old insecurities in h so he could connect better and wouldn’t be persieved as just an asshole-y dude cause i don’t like that and louis don’t deserve that uwu🌸

hands down the ice prince fic. and funny thing is, i already had my prompt for the fic fest but i just couldn’t stop thinking about one particular prompt about a bratty prince and an alpha who hated omegas and the amount of POSSIBILITIES that had. two days later or so, the mods of the fest gave us the opportunity to pick another prompt if we wanted and the rest is HISTORY

This one is pure nonsense. I didn’t explain anything at all. I just started writing and here it was. I needed some fluff and this spewed forth. I’m so sorry. This is a mess. But cute, I hope.

Pairing: Bucky X Reader

Word Count: 1793

Warnings: Abuse, fluff, terrible plot execution, swearing

You watch the rain splatter against the window pane, hoping that the thunder doesn’t wake your father up. The door won’t unlock for another ten minutes.

Just ten minutes.

Your palms tingle with nervousness. Your heart skips a beat every time lightning flashes. Thunder booms are quick to follow. And while you love storms like this, this one in particular couldn’t be happening at a worse time.

You tuck your knees up to your chest as you perch on the window seat, counting the seconds in your head. Lightning flashes across the sky, lighting up the dark room with false daylight and your pulse stops completely, the entire apartment seeming to hold its breath. The loudest thunder cracks, rattling the old windows and you very nearly whimper.

You hear him groan in the bedroom, bed creaking as he shifts. He mumbles something and then you hear the sound of a bottle breaking as it hits the floor.

Just three minutes.

Please.

Just stay asleep for three more minutes.

The floor creaks as he gets up and you look at the complicated lock on the front door. You’re not gonna make it. You look back out the window, hoping that if you remain very still, he won’t notice you in his drunken stupor.

You try to make yourself as small as possible as the door creaks open, keeping your face turned towards the glass, tears spilling over and down your cheeks.

You don’t dare move to wipe them away as he lumbers by, his heavy feet shuffling on the bare wooden floors. You press your lips together to silence any noise. He picks up the broom and turns to shuffle back. You squeeze your eyes shut, hardly daring to breathe.

He cracks the wooden handle across your shins and you cry out as it stings and burns. “Clean it up.” He snarls like it’s your fault.

You take the broom, your hands shaking as you move cautiously towards his bedroom.

“Get a move on!” He barks, his hand striking the back of your head. You stumble forward, trying not to fall to your knees. You hurry forward and sweep up the broken bottle pieces, collecting them to throw them away.

You glance at the clock on his nightstand and realize there’s only one minute left.

One minute until you’re free.

You scurry into the kitchen and get him another drink. You take it back to him, setting it on the nightstand and backing away. He picks it up and takes a sip before turning back to you, his eyes narrowing.

“Why are you still here, you ungrateful wench?” He growls, his free hand balling into a fist.

Before you can answer or leave, he swings, his fist crunching against your cheek and jaw. You crash back against the floor, your hand jarring up into your arm and you cry out, scooting back. He turns away, setting the glass down. You inch your way out of the door, cradling your wrist against your chest.

You pull his door shut and rush out the now unlocked front door. You stumble down the steps of the apartment and out into the rain. Your chest feels like it’s caving in and you can’t breathe. You gasp for air, making your way down the street.

You need to find your boyfriend. He won’t be home from work just yet, but his mom will. You manage to find his building and struggle to climb the stairs. You pause outside, imagining how you must look. Your cheek is bleeding from his wedding ring, you look like a drowned rat from the rain.

You take a painful deep breath and lift your hand to knock on the door. It opens before you even have a chance to touch it and Bucky’s mom is on the other side of the door.

Her face is full of worry as she pulls you into her arms, squeezing you tight.

“You’re late today.” She murmurs, stepping back and cupping your cheeks. “Oh, honey. Come inside.” She ushers, pulling you inside. She guides you into the bathroom and gets out her first aid kit.

Bucky

I run up the stairs to my apartment, taking them two at a time. My heart is hammering in my chest and my hands are shaking.

I shove open the door, but the living room is empty. “Mom?” I call.

She comes out of the kitchen, drying her hands. “She’s in your bed. Sleeping. If you’re still planning on going through with it, it’s going to have to wait until tomorrow, sweetheart.”

“Is she okay?” I ask, fearing the answer. A day is going to come when your father won’t let you out, or he hurts you too badly for you to leave the apartment.

“A little banged up, but otherwise yes.”

I turn and head for my bedroom, shutting the door silently and resting my head against it for a minute.

“Bucky?” You mumble behind me and I turn around, forcing a smile.

“Hey, doll.” I say, moving over to the bed.

You scoot over on the bed, being careful of your wrist. “How was work?” You ask.

I kick off my boots and peel off my wet shirt. I don’t miss how your eyes watch my every move and it makes my heart race and my skin tingle.

“It was awful.” I sigh, climbing onto the bed and lying next to you. I pull you against me and your arm rests in the center of my chest. I wrap my arms around you, sighing with content. I had been so worried all night, and all day, wondering if you were okay.

“Why? What happened?” You ask, picking your head up off my shoulder and looking at me.

“You weren’t there. I had to suffer hours and hours of being away from you. I didn’t like it.” I say and you blink for a minute before snorting.

“You’re dumb.” You roll your eyes and lay your head back down.

“But you love me.” I remind you.

“But I love you.” You agree.

“Did he hurt you?” I ask, brushing hair back from your cheek. Your hair is dry, you’ve clearly been here for a while.

“Not too much. Just my wrist, but your neighbor fixed me right up.”

I trace the small cut on your cheek, my heart breaking and my blood boiling. “I’m so sorry, doll.” I say and you capture my hand, kissing it gently.

“I love you, Bucky.” You say softly.

“I love you, too.” I hesitate for a moment and you tap my chest with your finger.

“What are you thinking?”

“How do you always know?” I grin.

“I can smell the smoke.” You reply without missing a beat and I laugh.

“Well, rude. I was thinking I don’t want you to go back there, not ever. We both know your home is really here with us. There’s no point in you going back there.”

You sit up as much as you can and look at me. “What are you saying?” You ask.

I dig into my pocket and pull out a small box. I place it carefully in your hand, watching your face. You open the ring box and look from the diamond to me, back to the diamond, back to me.

“I don’t understand.” You say finally and I roll my eyes.

“Yes, you do. I love you, I’m going to spend the rest of my life with you whether you know about it or not, so I figure you might as well be in on it.” I say, fighting the grin as you laugh.

“So my options are to marry you or be stalked by you?”

“Basically.”

“Can I request both?” You smirk and I pull you down to me, kissing you fiercely.

“Definitely.”

“Oh good.”

“So, I have a confession.” I start and you look down at me, holding out your hand as I place the ring on your finger.

“I’m listening.”

“I knew you were gonna say yes, so I applied for a marriage license a while ago.” I tell you and your beautiful eyes get wide.

“You did?”

“Yeah. And it’s been approved.”

“Okay, what does that mean?” You tilt your head.

“I think we should go to the Justice of the Peace tomorrow and get married. That way you don’t ever have to worry about him again.”

“Bucky,” You sigh. “It’s not that simple.”

“Sure it is. My mom and Steve will be our witnesses, you and I and the judge sign the documents and boom, we’re married.”

“Doesn’t my father have to sign something?”

“Only if you’re under 18, which neither of us are. You’re perfectly legal to do this by yourself. And besides, if he does, Steve can forge his signature. He’s getting pretty good.” I say and you swat my chest, but there isn’t much force behind it.

“You shouldn’t encourage that.”

“Baby, please? I don’t want to have to go through another night wondering if he’s broken your leg and you can’t get to me. Or if he never lets that door unlock and he keeps you there where I can’t get to you. It’s torture watching you walk away from me.”

You lean down and kisses me softly, your lips delicate and warm. “Okay. Tomorrow.” You agree and I pull you to me with a grin.

You settle back into my arms, head resting on my chest.

“Alright, just sign here.” The judge points to the lines and we all sign, couple and witnesses. “You may kiss your bride.” He says finally and I pull you to me, tilting your chin up. Your eyes are sparkling as you smile, rising up on your tiptoes and kissing me.

“Okay, Mrs. Barnes. Open your eyes.” I say, stopping you in front of a building.

You uncover your eyes and stop dead. “You can’t be serious.” You turn to look at me, jaw dropping.

I hold out the key to the front door and place it in your palm. “Welcome home, my beautiful bride.” I smile.

You throw your arms around my neck, kissing me hungrily. “How?”

“I’ve been saving for so long, we hardly owe anything now. And we’re safe here. I’ll always protect you.” I scoop you up and carry you up the front porch. You unlock the front door and we step inside over the threshold.

“It’s beautiful.” You smile, your fingers curling in my hair.

“Now, I vote that we christen every single room.” I grin, setting you down gently.

“I don’t object.” You smirk, unbuttoning your jacket.

“Oh, you tease.” I growl.

You laugh, eyes crinkling in the corners and I could watch you forever and never get bored.

updates on my life!

i’m working w 2 kids and have been for like 5 months now and it’s stressful sometimes but overall really enriching and rewarding and inspiring and teaching me so so much about how they learn and what they’re concerned with and their thought processes and it’s just rly nice (still stressful tho everyday i freak out and one of my kids has a worse affect on me and gets my blood pressure UP THERE cause i’m so anxious i’m doing something wrong and shes so sweet but i feel for the mom and im like im making shit worse i dont have the answer im sorry im just a kid lmao)

i’m still living at home but i’m not as anxious and i’m more open about shit w my parents and it’s nice to be a part of a family even if it’s not perfect... idk not much to be said here, they suck at pronouns and next year im gonna remind them again cause for the past 6 months theyve been like were getting used to it and the name is easier to get used to so first name then pronouns and also correcting us everytime makes us feel bad (honestly i understand where theyre coming from and they are trying but are getting lazy and dont correct themselves as much so i think a reminder of how much it means for me is needed) but theyre good kids or whatever

memes (my cat) is an angel and loves me more and more each day and i cry over her all the time she’s perfect and bratty and has started talking a bit more and god you guys she’s amazing, like i cant afford a dog rn or any other pets and shes just the light of my life shes so affectionate these days and im about it

i’m in love w my best friend and things are flirty and light yet deep and comfortable and i’m taking everything day by day and just letting the love in myself be honest and dreamy without the pressure and anxiety and i’m so enriched to have someone i can call a best friend who inspires me in every way and our friendship is so precious to me and i’m so patient with it and it nudges me to pour my love over into everyone around me like wowowowowowow ykno? i’m proud of both of us for how we communicate and read each other and sometimes i still have doubts about my ability to express shit but it’s not driving my thoughts and we r rly cute together i’m so thankful and proud of them for everything our relationship has been and has given us i god you guys i love them so fucking much its nestled in such a compassion for each other and i just dont doubt theyre love and their effort :’)

and also i have a crush on someone new and it tickles at my throat and makes me heart thrum and buzz and spark and literally just touching their earlobe made my breath catch in my throat and it’s nice to allow that in myself. i trust my actions and my respect of their boundaries and it’s hard for me to be sexual rn (not that that will happen probably) but physical intimacy and affection is like a cool salty breeze just when it was getting too hot, and makes me excited and relaxed even just to have a new friend that i feel connected and comfortable with and a soft flirting connection, idk… it took me by surprise and i feel like im gonna curse it but its cute llmao

i’m doing more art and creative outlets and rly rly rly rly rly wanna take a ceramics/pottery class so so so so fucking bad i feel like it’d be so fun and has so much opportunity for creativity and play and that’s just what i want rn!!! so i hope i pursue an opportunity for that soon, definitely a goal of mine come next year

i’m looking into grad school but not absolutely gunning for any way out of here like i was over the summer…. i miss school a lot a lot but i don’t know what’s in the cards for me yet… and i’m waiting for the dust in my heart to settle a little before i sit and plan out which is a nice change of pace for me but rn i am looking at tulane in new orleans or LA or possibly montreal or possibly like 17 other places lmao 👏🙃🙃🙃🙃

i have a wonderful trip to dreamy mountain towns planned for february and i’m begging for snow fall and to take myself around wherever my heart itches to go and stopping to visit friends along the way, and very excited to take my cameras and document it all… im such good company hahaha like a huge part of me wishes for someone else to tag a long but its not realistic and this is just something i need to do and planning it w someone else might stresss me out :/

i am gonna change my name soon and its not as scary as changing it from my birthname but its gonna be my legal name so thats spooky!

i don’t have a lot of folks close around me, and that’s okay, i have friends and connections in many places and i’m not trying to compete with an invisible self anymore that has someone to hang out with all the time and talks to people everyday, im me and enriching connections whenever possible but letting them take root and grow on their own when they tell me thats what they need

i’m just overall healing and growing rn and there’s still days when i hate every moment and everything i do but im good at noting when things are good and singing loud and dancing goofy and just feeling every fucking inch of my self without disgust or anguish

it’s not perfect…. but i’m so so so glad i’m still here to be told i’m so fucking loved, and make little girls smile and feel validated, and be an animals favorite person… to write letters to like everyone i know to pedal my little bike in the cold cold wind… i know all the reasons i never wanna die and all the reasons im still here

Hello, I come here because everyone I ask just tells me not to worry about it and I JUST WANT TO KNOW! Sorry if this is way too long. I don't want to miss anything. I'm twenty years old. When I went to look at our cars my car was a little scuffed, nothing that a little buffing couldn't take off. Their car, was even less. One of the passengers (there were 5 adults total, two children sitting on laps) claimed his back hurt. His injuries (not positive but almost positive) are not bad enough to go into my bodily injury. His PIP should cover it. People in the street had yelled at him to leave America, he said. They say were stealing jobs but Americans dont want to clean toilets or pick strawberries.

Mexicos government has warned of a new reality for Mexicans in the US and urged them to take precautions and get in touch with their nearest consulates, which will receive $50m in extra funding. The concern is humanitarian and economic remittances from the US topped $27bn last year, a lifeline that dwarfs oil revenues. Mexicos 50 US consulates are scrambling to meet the surge in demand for their services. A new 24-hour hotline is fielding thousands of calls daily.

With an estimated 1 million undocumented people, LA purportedly the second biggest Mexican city outside Mexico City is a crucible. The four-storey consulate that abuts MacArthur Park is certainly the biggest and probably busiest consulate. Visitors fill its halls and offices with nervous energy, seeking help and hope.

Sanchez, the seamstress, said she had never been in trouble with the law but feared being stopped on her way to or from work. I drive very carefully, so carefully, she said in Spanish. They can take you for any infraction. You have the fear of not knowing that if you leave your home, youll be back.

She sat at the end of a row of plastic chairs in a large room lined by lawyers cubicles the department of protection. Sanchez sought a deportation contingency plan: a checklist of what to say and not say if stopped, who to call, what to pack, if given the chance to pack. Im very grateful to this country. It has let me work. Ive been happy. I dont want to go to Mexico. But if I do go I want to be prepared.

Birth certificates, which many migrants lack, are crucial. Some used to consider them arcane, an irrelevance in the US, but now they feel vital, a key document to help keep them in the US or, if need be, start a new life in Mexico.

Edgar Perez, 35, a business student, sought Mexican passports for his two US citizen children lest he be expelled. It would make it easier for them to visit me. The tone was matter of fact but fear gnawed at him, he said. Its always on the news, every day, but I dont know whats going to happen.

Some compare detention by ICE to a malign rapture experience: youre going about your business then poof, sucked into a void. Who will pick up the kids from school? Feed the cat? Pay the electricity? Questions you can dwell on in a detention centre before being bussed south and herded across a walkway into Tijuana, Nogales, Juarez or some other border city.

The uncertainty is prompting people to scrimp and save, said Jos Guerrera, who sells coffee and snacks outside the consulate. Ive been doing this 16 years and never seen people so anxious. Theyre saving money for whatever may come.

Some trek to this gritty downtown neighbourhood of taco restaurants and discount stores, their signs in Spanish, hoping the consulate can help avert deportation. A Mexican birth certificate, for instance, can be used to obtain a California driving licence invaluable in a city where cars rule and driving without a licence can land you in jail.

Arianna Diaz, 25, sought help with her request for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca), an Obama-era programme that legalises so-called Dreamers immigrants who were brought to America illegally as children. Diaz, a would-be nurse, entered the US aged seven and grew up speaking English. She now has a husband, a toddler and a newborn, all US citizens, but felt vulnerable. Last month ICE agents deported Guadalupe Garca de Rayos, a young mother of US children, from Arizona.

I dont know Mexico. I have no family there, said Diaz. With all the bad things Ive heard, I dont want to go. Her three-month-old son had a heart condition requiring continuous care. The prospect of separation horrified her. No, no, no. Trump has said he has a soft spot for Dreamers, a vague statement to which Diaz clutches. Most of us are hardworking people. We call this our home.

The consulates website advises on what to do if detained phone someone as soon as possible, dont sign anything you dont understand and offers key phrases in English: I want to remain silent. I do not consent to a search. I am a Mexican citizen and I want to speak to my consulate. I want to speak to a lawyer. Having a lawyer, studies show, dramatically improves the chance of remaining in the US.

Civil rights groups give another tip: do not open the door to immigration agents unless they can show a judicial warrant through the window, or slip it under the door. Agents use ruses posing as regular police, pretending to be looking for someone else, implying a warrant of removal is a judicial warrant to gain access.

The consulates protection unit has 19 attorneys and legal advisers. When not giving advice they are visiting jails, swotting up on immigration law and monitoring social media for alerts about raids. Felipe Carrera, the units chief, said consuls had provided protection for decades, not least during the tenure of Barack Obama, who was dubbed the deporter-in-chief for expelling 2.5 million people.

The Trump eras challenge was how to empower people with information without fuelling panic, he said. The LAPD, for instance, has a policy of not facilitating deportations, but Trump has threatened to withdraw federal funding from so-called sanctuary cities. We dont want to be naive. The reality is changing, said Carrera.

Sifting fact from hype is tricky. ICE picked up 680 people across the US in a series of raids last month a routine sweep, said the agency. Trump, however, claimed it as part of his promised crackdown. Immigrant activists saw it that way too and said plenty of non-criminals were swept up.

Carlos Garca de Alba, the consul general, said similar raids happened before Trump. On TV you hear about massive raids but so far weve not seen that. In the future there could be but up to now, no.

The psychological impact was deep, however, and a panic psychosis inhibited some people from going to work or sending children to school, said the consul. In the current climate, Hispanics had legitimate reason to fear being targeted, he said. My concern is of racial profiling and people being pushed even more to the shadows.

Things looked very different a year ago. De Alba was finishing a stint as ambassador to Ireland and preparing to move to Mexicos embassy in the United Arab Emirates. Trump was leading the Republican primaries but few thought he could win the White House. Hillary Clinton was promising immigration reform and her appeal to Latino voters included comparing herself to a Latina abuela (grandmother).

Latinos in California had become the single biggest population group and wielded growing clout in city halls and the state assembly. The LA consulate enlisted the mayor, galleries and museums in a year-long celebration of Mexican art, culture, gastronomy and commerce. The initiative was called 2017: Year of Mexico in Los Angeles.

Then Trump stormed to victory. Instead of crowning a queen, Mexicans fell under a new kings heel. Instead of moving to the Arabian peninsula, De Alba, as part of a wide-ranging diplomatic shuffle, moved to LA to lead 250 staff. The year-long festival of Mexican culture is going ahead, showcasing writers, musicians and artists, but Mexican residents, documented and undocumented, are in grim mood. Troomp, as they pronounce his name, has shredded any sense of security at inhabiting a liberal, bilingual metropolis.

Its now a felony to pee in the street, said Arturo Arias, 45, a homeless man seated on a bench with two friends in MacArthur Park. Jaywalking too. Used to be you got a ticket. Now they can use it to kick you out.

Freddy Cazador, 77, nodded. Ive heard ICE is riding inside patrol cars.

Carlos Espiridion, 66, chimed in. If they stop you and you answer in Spanish theyll check your record, look for any excuse to deport you.

They referred to ICE, LAPD, sheriffs deputies and other law enforcement agencies. Their comments were based on inaccurate rumours. But the fear was real. It afflicted not just Arias, who is undocumented, but Espiridion, who has a green card. He felt that one slip, a minor infraction, could land him in Tijuana, shuffling in line with other deportees at a soup kitchen. Last month a former gardener leapt to his death near the border crossing hours after being deported.

On the edge of MacArthur Park, a landmark immortalised in the 1968 hit sung by Richard Harris, the queue outside the consulate dwindles as the day wears on. Visitors emerge clutching sheaves of documents and scatter across the city, back to jobs and homes.

The consulate sits in LAs heart. From here you can walk to city hall, the Walt Disney concert hall and Dodger stadium. Numerous allies the mayor, LAPD, civil society groups express desire to protect Mexicans. Hollywood too. Pleas for tolerance and diversity peppered the Oscars.

Few of the faces on stage were Latino, however, and it remains to be seen how hard LAs business, political and cultural elites will fight for a largely invisible underclass.

With Trump vowing more executive actions and a cranked-up deportation machine, it is left to the consulate and grassroots activists to respond case by case, day by day, a gruelling, bureaucratic slog where victories and defeats play out in private, away from the protest marches and cries of resistance.

It is about processing birth certificates and legalisation applications and visiting jails and detention centres and teaching marginalised people they have rights teaching them that if the knock comes it is OK not to open the door.

Bureaucracy behind the climate of fear

New guidelines announced last month expanded the number of undocumented immigrants who can be targeted for deportation and sped up the deportation process. Now any immigrant living in the US illegally who has been charged or convicted of a crime or suspected of one will be an enforcement priority. This could include people arrested for shoplifting or minor traffic offences.

Any undocumented immigrant who has been in the country for less than two years can also be targeted for expedited removal, which does not need to be authorised by a court.

The guidelines also called for thousands of extra federal agents to be hired, local law enforcement to be enlisted to expedite arrests, and more immigration judges deployed.

There were 11.1 million undocumented immigrants in the US in 2014 this has not changed since 2009 and it accounts for 3.5% of the US population.

5.8 million Mexicans were living as undocumented immigrants in 2014 52% of the total.

The number of Mexicans living as undocumented immigrants has fallen over recent years, while the number from other countries has grown by 325,000 between 2009 and 2014. People coming from Asia and central America account for most of this increase.

1 THE PARENTS

Jesus Hernandez, 31, senses the fear among colleagues every time he clocks in for work on one of LAs building sites. You see it on their faces. Theyre worried something will happen that there might be a raid.

For Hernandez and his partner, Berta Cervantes, 41, deportation could mean gut-wrenching separation from their three children, aged five, nine and 10. What can be worse? said Cervantes.

They came to the consulate to ask about certifying a guardianship letter for the childrens aunt, should they choose to keep them in the US. The children are US citizens.

They also wanted to apply for Mexican passports for the children to facilitate cross-border visits and perhaps integration, should they decide to move the children to Mexico, where they could be viewed as foreigners.

They speak Spanish but dont read or write it, said Hernandez. If they end up in a Mexican school we dont want them to feel lost, or fall behind. Obtaining passports now would mean one less bureaucratic headache.

2 THE LAWYER

Felipe Carrera heads the consulates protection department, a 19-strong team of attorneys that advises and arranges documentation for documented and undocumented Mexicans in and around LA.

Were a kind of defence centre. Were trying for a balance between not causing panic and empowering the community with the information that it needs.

Mexicos US consulates have provided this protection service for decades but demand has spiked since Trump took power, prompting Mexicos government to pledge an extra $50m for the increased workload. Were hoping for more money and personnel, said Carrera.

The biggest threat was often not immigration raids but crooked notaries and scam artists who conned clients with fake, dangerous promises to fix peoples legal status, he said. People are being defrauded and losing their property and savings.

3 THE CONSUL

Carlos Garca de Alba, formerly Mexicos ambassador to Ireland, took over the consulate in Los Angeles last year in a diplomatic shuffling prompted by Trumps rise. The speed of developments here, its so fast, he said. It started even before the presidents inauguration.

An urbane Hibernophile steeped in Irish literature, De Albas job now includes tracking detentions of Mexicans by LA and US federal law enforcement agencies.

Despite headlines about mass deportations, numbers so far are normal but the executive orders had unleashed a panic psychosis, said the consul.

My concern is that racial profiling and fear will push people even further into the shadows. Parents are asking me if they should stop sending children to school. It means theyre really in fear. You cant do that to honest human beings. These people are hard workers, they pay taxes.
