🛠 What tools/programs/apps do you use to write?

I just use Word! I set the page color to pistachio green to be easier on my eyeballs and rely heavily on the nav pane. And I use the PymsPen wordcount tracker spreadsheet to track my wordcount for the month each month; I just started using that in October and I really like it.

I mean, I pretty much get to/do write for All The Fandoms. Once I like a thing, I put it on the ship list or start posting about it, and people are kind and request it! I guess the only fandom that I would like to write that no one’s requested (or will request) is Purple Moon, but I’m one of like four people MAX who remembers that fandom existed, so.

Which of your fics do you want more attention for?

Two series, actually: Five Places Cinna Came From and Since Feeling Is First. I’m still proud of the Cinnafics 10 years/11 years later, which is RARE for me vis-a-vis my writing, and I’m proud that I actually finished the gotdang thing. And I loved writing SFIF with @nichestars and I think the fics all turned out really lovely.

Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

Yes. I just answered an Ask about this recently! :)

What sorts of things do you normally write?

Character studies! I don’t think I’ve ever really written anything else.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Capitol Pastries, for sure.

What’s a fic that pushed you out of your comfort zone?

Everything I write that’s longer than a drabble does, in some way, push me out of my comfort zone, but I think Genesis has been the work that I’ve had the most emotional ~turmoil about writing.

Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Yes! I love a good crossover. Probably objectively the silliest/craziest has been the Continuing Adventures of Cap & Molly (copyright @therebeccaw) but I also think the Princess Diaries/His Dark Materials daemon!fusion fic was very silly (on purpose).

Have you ever had a fic translated?

No. :\ I’ve had people ask but they always want to put it on a different platform, and I don’t want my stuff on Wattpad or sites with paid memberships because... yuck.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes! A lot! Most of my finished longfic is co-written because I Am Not A Finisher but I WILL LEARN TO BE.

Lent From Tomorrow (Today Was Too Small For Us), a shrinkyclinks A/B/O set in the codebreaking, espionage world of WWII.

What are your writing strengths?

Food imagery and attributing colors to emotions. And worldbuilding, I think, if I toot my own horn.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Plot pacing and conflict. I never want to write conflict. I will go 10 miles out of the way to avoid writing meaningful conflict.

What was the first fandom you wrote for? Most recent?

Technically? Under the Umbrella Tree. On the internet in a fanfiction space? Dream Street. My most recent fandom is “whatever people are requesting at the moment” but practically speaking, the MCU.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

I will always have a real soft spot for Never Never Never Stop for Anyone (Sheylinsonverse) because it was my all-time most productive writing experience and I just had a lot of fun with it, but I honestly think Lent From Tomorrow is/will be FAR AND AWAY the best thing I’ve ever written, including shit for my MFA.

What fic are you most proud of?

Probably Cinnafic, 24V24T, or Ruefic. Or, again, Lent From Tomorrow, which I WILL FINISH BECAUSE I’M GOING TO BE A FINISHER.

Fandoms: I’m active in pretty much everything, these days, because drabbles, and I’ll write in any fandom that I enjoy (so if I post about a thing, I’ll happily write about that thing if someone asks). But my biggest current writing fandoms are Star Wars, The Old Guard, and the MCU.

Two-shot: Apparently a two-chapter fic -- I have one of these half-finished and co-written with @dracosollicitus on AO3 currently (Stay and Be There Always, for Poe/Rey) but I think I’m more likely to write a one-shot than a two-shot.

Most popular multi-chapter: Landslide, by all counts (co-written with @witchietozier). My most popular solo-written multi-chapter is May You Enjoy Your New Life, which I think is still technically more popular/more metrically measurably popular on LiveJournal than AO3. I think Landslide was the first of my multi-chaps to actually come out solely on AO3, not LJ first, now that I think about it. But apparently my fic LJ has over 10,000 members now?? That’s nuts!

Actual worst part of writing: Anxiety. The idea of actually finishing something, but also never finishing anything. And worrying that something I write will make someone’s day or fandom experience or something worse.

How you choose your titles: Drabbles are easy because I just slap the prompt and the prompt number on them, and voila. The Sheylinson series was easy because each fic was titled after a lyric in that week’s Union J song. The Since Feeling Is First series was easy because each fic is a line in the poem (although I would love to someday finish that series, I’m semi-content with how it’s ended where it is). Otherwise, titles are????? Difficult???? Five Times fics are pretty easy to title, but like, *actual stories* are hard to title. I do a lot of one-word titles, like Landslide and Genesis. And I’m a basic white chick so In Screaming Color is a Taylor Swift lyric and I will probably Taylor Swift lyric something else sometime.

Do you outline: I always say that if some writers are gardeners and some writers are architects, I’m a landscape designer. I always have an outline of at least the major shifts within a story, but how to get between them I try to write organically. That being said, the last time I finished anything solo-written and lengthy was... ::mumbles:: ago, so. Drabbles are all organic, obviously, because there’s no room to outline anything beyond remembering to include a beginning, middle, and end.

Ideas I probably won’t get around to but wouldn’t it be nice: I REALLY want to finish my The Old Guard/The Good Place crossover, and I’ve gotten further into it than I often get in my sidepiece WIPs, but I don’t know whether I’ll actually fully finish it. I also really want to write my Wanda multiverse conceptual weird piece, but I’m honestly not sure that AO3 can do the formatting that I would want and it’s pretentious and weird anyway, so I may just wibble around in the document for my own fun.

Callouts @ me: FINISH A THING.

Best writing traits: I’m good at imagery (to the point where I do too much of it). I’m pretty good at voice and/or just have a voicey writing style. I’m pretty good at drabbles. Sometimes my word choices are unique.

Spicy tangential opinion: Drabbles are exactly 100 words, not just “a shortish fic.” People who put all of their short fics into one massive fic that’s got nine miles of tags and pairings are fundamentally misunderstanding many things all at once. I am simply too elderly to understand the appeal of (Y/N) fics and I wish they had their own pairing tag instead of being in existing pairing tags, because they make me feel old and grouchy. And I concur with @lightdescending that 8tracks was BY FAR the superior playlist website!

Hi this may seem out of nowhere and I'm sorry if this comes off as rude, but do you have a reason for not orphaning your larry fics? I know several people who orphaned or straight up deleted their larry fics after leaving fandom. I created larry content and I deleted it all when I left, I couldn't bare to look at it anymore knowing awful ppl consumed it. I ask this because I see your larry fics still recced by larries, just wondering if you have any feelings about this. thank you

The short answer:

I’m not going to pretend like I wasn’t part of the 1D fandom and didn’t create Harry/Louis fanworks. While orphaning works is totally fine, and I would always rather people orphan their fics than pull and delete them, it’s not something that I personally want to do (at this point, at least; back in 2012, I also said I’d never move from LJ to AO3, so I reserve the right to change my mind in the future about all things!) because it would feel like trying to “dirty delete” a big part of my fannish life.

The long answer:

Like, what good would it do, anyway? People know I wrote Harry/Louis, and they know which Harry/Louis fics were mine, if they’re still going to seek them out. They’re all on Fanlore as fics that I’ve written (for some reason? I don’t feel like any of them are like, Important To Fannish Culture(TM) enough for Fanlore, but apparently they are).

If MYEYNL or Landslide or Sheylinson exist, it’s because I wrote them, and taking my name off them is just kind of... giving Larries more power than they deserve to have. They don’t get to have the only voices that dictate what happens with regard to 1D fandom. I am anti-Larrie, and I was part of 1D fandom, and I think it’s like, kind of important to dig my heels in and be like, “No, I was here, I wrote this, and I am anti-Larrie anyway.”

Like... I don’t condone Larries’ behavior or language or beliefs, but I also don’t think that their existence means that MYEYNL or Landslide or Sheylinson need to stop existing. I’m not going to give Larries that kind of power. My fannish experience was outside of Larries, and it was mine, and I created things that I loved with people who mean a lot to me as fannish friends, and all of that still deserves to have record of its existence.

I did archive-lock all of my RPF, but that’s more because I feel like RPF in general shouldn’t necessarily be part of like, non-fannish internet accessibility. The fourth wall is important to me. As soon as 1D fandom started to break down the fourth wall, that’s when I started to call out its toxic behavior, and I still do. There’s already one episode of IMYOLJ about how Larries ruined the 1D experience for me, and there’s another one coming up this winter. But even though Larries ruined the experience, it was still an experience that I had, and the fics that I wrote -- and especially the ones I co-wrote with friends -- were some of my favorite fanfiction writing experiences that I’ve ever had, because before Larries(TM) ruined it, Harry/Louis was a beautiful (FICTIONAL, FAN-CREATED) ship that was incredibly fun to write.

I 100% do not condone to behavior of their current fandom and have been calling out against Larries/Larrie Cult Behavior/the Larrie CT since 2012 -- Louis tweeted the Bullshit Tweet within a week after the final chapter of MYEYNL posted, and I’ve been very open and clear about not being okay with Larries since then. I called out the kind of toxic language and behavior that not-yet-called-Larries engaged in before that, as well, because for some fucking reason they thought it was OK to refer to people as the f-slur and shit, too. I’ve hated ~Larrie~ behavior since before they were called Larries, and I still wanted to write fic and create stuff that made me happy, even though people I thought were objectively awful were consuming it (and still do). If I refused to let my name be associated with every fandom that I thought had incredibly immoral, toxic people in it, I would have to orphan ALL of my fic, for every fandom, and that’s... not the point. At least, not to me. (Again, if other people feel differently for their own experiences, that’s totally fine and understandable!)

Also, like... at least some of, if not like A Lot Of, Larrie bullshit-nonsense beliefs are kind of my fault because of MYEYNL inventing the idea that Eleanor could be a paid beard (which, yet again: I MADE UP FOR PLOT AND WAS FULLY AWARE I WAS MAKING IT UP BECAUSE IT WAS FICTION, and that’s NOT EVEN HOW BEARDING WORKS BUT I MADE IT UP AS FICTION FOR PLOT REASONS FOR AN OVERWROUGHT FANFICTION THAT WAS FICTIONAL) and I kind of feel like I need to wear that albatross. Or whatever that phrase is. Hang that albatross around my neck, or whatever. Like, if that fic were to be ~anonymous~, then I feel like it would give undue credence to the dumb ideas that come from it. But with it attributed to me, it can always be traced back to my dumb brain and me banging on a pan yelling “I MADE IT UP WHOLECLOTH, NONE OF THIS WAS MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS REALISTIC AT ALL.” All of the ideas in my stories are not just my ideas, but my responsibilities, too. And I am going to like... keep carrying those responsibilities. If that makes sense.

Also, I doubt I’m still on Larrie rec lists, since I’ve been very vocally anti-Larrie. I think. I hope.
