A few months ago, I commented on someone's video about celiac safety preferences that I sometimes eat Lucky Charms and Cheerios even though they optically sort their oats, a controversial method for ensuring that grains are gluten free. A random person left a comment that basically boiled down to "Since gluten exposure increases cancer risk for celiacs, you are basically asking to get cancer, idiot."
I didn't answer, because they were obviously upset and I didn't think we were going to have a conversation either of us felt good about. But I just remembered it recently and I'm like........lots of things increase your cancer risk. Unless you're going to yell at me for occasionally eating a hot dog (meat cured with nitrates also slightly increases colorectal cancer risk) or sometimes going outside without sunscreen on, it's silly to chastise me for occasionally eating a food that the FDA allows General Mills to label as gluten free. I can't imagine how this person would talk to a smoker.
#it's possible that being obsessive to the point of never eating anything even slightly risky is...worse for your health IMO#like. I'm quite careful because the consequences of getting glutened are immediate and unpleasant#but to be much more careful has diminishing health returns#and would mean that I never got food from any restaurant and spent hours researching every non-certified gf labeled food#and I think that maybe. just maybe. the emotional duress from that would be worse for me than the health benefits#never get takeout with friends ever again in exchange for very slightly lower cancer risk! so worth it!#boring text posts#celiac tag#medical
