anyways the only "problem" that pokemon would've ever had implementing an experience system that's essentially mandatory for any story-heavy rpg to function is that the last mainline pokemon to balance it's main quest above the level of "soloable by a child ignoring The Mechanic In The Fucking Tagline" locked that balance behind a story clear, a second copy of the game, and a full save wipe.

and since then Pokemon has been actually very slightly harder than back then, because they no longer have to balance around Little Timmy only having 2 pokemon anywhere near the level curve, because that just doesn't happen organically anymore.
