Challenge Accepted pt. 9

The living room of Mika and Skye's Campus Lodge apartment was a harmonious blend of two distinct worlds. On one side, the walls were adorned with posters of anime posters for "Sailor Moon" and "Pretty Cure," shelves upon shelves of manga and blurays, a display of meticulously arranged anime figures, model kits, and statues, and a few autographs from her favorite seiyuu.

On the other side, Chicago sports memorabilia took center stage. The walls had a pair of jerseys, a Bulls and a Blackhawks, hanging side-by-side, along with a Cubs World Series pennant. A small bookshelf held two autographed balls, a football by the Bears and a basketball by the Sky, and a small Chicago flag nestled between them.

The furniture was comfortable. The WVBA supplied a pair of recliners, a cozy couch, and a coffee table that currently held an array of Filipino snacks. Mika had just finished preparing turon, a sweet banana roll, and kwek-kwek, quail eggs coated in seasoned orange batter.

Just as Mika was setting down a bowl of shrimp chips on the coffee table, there was a knock at the door. "Ah, perfect timing! Come in, come in!" Mika exclaimed as she opened the door to find Cutie and Niki standing there.

Cutie walked in holding a six-pack of Fanta Melon Soda. "My parents sent these from home to celebrate my win. Thought I'd share the love!"

Niki feigned a wounded expression. "Are you ever going to let me live down our match, Cutie?"

Cutie chuckled, "Oh, of course I will, Niki. Right after I knock someone else out!"

Niki playfully shook her fist at Cutie, "Oh, you're just asking for it today, aren't you?" The room erupted in laughter.

Mika, still beaming, turned to her guests. "Salamat for coming, you guys! I really appreciate your help with this anime party."

Niki shrugged, "Hey, I'm no expert like you two. I mean, I've only watched stuff I grab at Walmart like 'Naruto' or 'My Hero Academia.' But I'm happy to help!"

Cutie's eyes sparkled. "I'm so thrilled you asked us, Mika! But I've got a quick question. Um, have you considered... cosplay?"

Mika's eyes widened, her face lighting up like a Christmas tree. "Cosplay? Bakit hindi ko naisip 'yun? We have so much to do!"

After a few hours had passed, the atmosphere in the apartment was buzzing with excitement. Mika sat in the floor, her tablet sitting in her lap, while Niki and Cutie were lounging on the couch. Now, they had a plan… and full stomachs.

"Those snacks were amazing, Mika! I've never had Filipino food before, but I'm a fan now," Niki exclaimed.

Cutie chimed in, "Hai, those quail eggs were something else. So good!"

Mika beamed. "I'm glad you both enjoyed them! Now, let's recap. For the anime party, we've got four hours in the gym. We’ll start with 'Cowboy Bebop,' then 'Ranma 1/2' and ‘Attack on Titan.’ From there we move on to 'Pretty Cure,' 'Death Note,' 'One Piece,' 'Bubblegum Crisis,' and 'Gundam Wing,’ in that order."

Niki's eyes widened. "Wow, that's an eclectic mix! Something for everyone, huh?"

Cutie was equally impressed. "It’s got classics and modern hits. I love it! Now, here’s what I’ve got for the guest list. There’s the three of us, obviously, Skye, Joe, my brother, and Disco. I say we invite Hippo and Bull, too.”

“I knew King Hippo was an anime fan,” Niki says matter of factly, drawing an odd look from Mika. “Look, IT sent me to help him get Crunchyroll to work on his TV.”

“Ah. Makes sense,” Mika nodded. “But, Bald Bull?”

“Oh yeah!” Cutie smiles, “He gives me a shopping list of model kits to bring back every time I visit family. He loves, and I mean loves, Gundam.”

Mika clapped her hands together. "Alright, then! The more, the merrier!"

Niki leaned forward, her eyes twinkling. "On the technical side, I can handle sending out digital invites and I’ll make sure to add that cosplay is allowed. And for the screening, the gym already has a massive projector screen that lowers from the ceiling. I'm thinking of… borrowing… the 4K Ultra HD projector from the arena and bringing the Dolby Atmos speakers we use for outdoor shows. The specs are just… ah, so good!"

Cutie and Mika exchanged glances before bursting into laughter. "You really geek out over this stuff, don't you?" Mika said.

Niki shrugged, "Hey, if you're going to do it, do it right."

Mika then clapped her hands together again, "So, what's everyone wearing for cosplay? I’m breaking out my Sailor Moon."

Niki shook her head, "I'm going to sit this one out. Never cosplayed before and don't have the time to put something together."

“Don’t worry, Niki,” Mika chimed in. “I love sewing. We’ll get you ready for the next cosplay opportunity.”

Cutie pulled out her phone and started swiping. "I'm torn between my Spike Spiegel and my Kamen Rider Kivala." She showed pictures of both costumes to Mika and Niki.

"Wow, both look amazing!" Niki exclaimed.

Mika was intrigued, "Kivala? What anime is that from?"

Cutie chuckled, "Actually, Kivala isn't from an anime. She's from a live-action show called 'Kamen Rider Decade.'"

Both Mika and Niki leaned in, suddenly curious. "Live-action? Tell us more!" Mika urged.

Cutie grinned, "Well, it's a tokusatsu show, a Japanese genre featuring superheroes, special effects, and lots of action. Maybe we should consider a tokusatsu party down the road?"

Mika's eyes sparkled at the idea, "That sounds like another epic gathering waiting to happen!"

Niki nodded, "I'm in, as long as there are snacks like today."

“Oh no,” Cutie shakes her head. “I can’t cook. You know that, Niki. I can burn water.”

“You’ll never go hungry as long as I’ve got a kitchen.” Mika stood up, her eyes shining with gratitude and excitement. "I can't thank you both enough for helping me plan this. It's going to be an anime party for the ages!"

Cutie and Niki joined in the excitement, their faces glowing with anticipation. "We wouldn't miss it for the world," Cutie said.

And so, the trio sat there, their hearts full and their minds racing with ideas, each one contributing a piece to what promised to be an unforgettable night.

I can't decide on one so here's a list:

Cowboy Bebop and Baccano for the jazzy vibes

Neon Genesis Evangelion because name a more iconic anime opening. You can't.

Your Lie in April (I didn't even watch this, but my sister did and let me tell you that that song didn't leave my head for weeks)

Death Parade because it's so much fun

Death Note's the World because I was so into jrock then

Yuri on Ice because WE WERE BORN TO MAKE HISTORY!

But do you know which one never fails to get me hyped?

I can't explain this anime. I got one of my friends and my sister into this and we all had the same reaction. We got really addicted while watching it and went "wtf just happened?" after we finished it. There is something in the animation, the music, the humour, wtv, that makes people addicted to this. Try to explain to someone that one of the most emotional moments in all of anime for you is when some guy manages to block a ball. Of course that guy is also my favourite because I love that asshole, but my sis and friend don't and they were also emotional... about a guy... blocking a ball! Witchcraft, I tell you.

14 - anime that’s overrated

With my taste? So many 😆

Bleach is the one of the big shonens in my teens that I could never get into. I guess people also started to gave up on it as it happened with the others that went on forever, but yeah that one is overrated and I am glad people eventually saw the light.

Kuroko no Basket. I am offended if this is said in the same sentence as Haikyuu as if they are on the same level. Please...

Attack on Titan. Some of my friends like it and I admit it has an amazing opening song and cool animation while the characters are in the air, but besides that... why?

Beastars... I don't get it.

There are some that I enjoy and yet consider overrated too like My Hero Academia and Spy x Family. Those are good, but not mind blowing good as people seem to think.

We would be here all day if I listed all the ones I tried, didn't like and couldn't see why others did so I will just stop here.

27 - first anime crush

I don't know! It happened as a kid probably. Probably the horse from Sailormoon 🥲 kid me related to Chibiusa and found Helios attractive, ok? Maybe it's the horn. I wasn't even a horse gir. Wth was this???

Well, kid me also liked the character with blue face from Slayers and the one with blue face from Flint the Time Detective or whatever that one was called so my tastes were SUPER normal in general. Kid me would be into the Avatar movies.

28 - favorite anime character

In all of anime? I have no clue 😆 Grimmer from Monster, maybe. Oh I really like Ed and Spike (that's another crush) from Cowboy Bebop too. Vash from Trigun. Dio from Last Exile, Kurapika from Hunter x Hunter...

Oh, Vanitas because that manga has an anime now haha and Jeanne. Does that even count if I don't watch the anime? I like Count D but from the manga and the same goes for Pandora Hearts that ruined my favs in the anime and I am bitter about it.

My Top 10 Favourite Animes (So Far)

1. NANA

I've loved nana since I was 10, it was my first anime. I'll prolly love it forever, it makes me cry and I just feels so real and nostalgic idk the aesthetic of this anime is my most favourite thing in the world. It's about two 20 year old girls who are polar opposites but have the same name meeting on a train to tokyo; and their worlds end up colliding. With Nana Osaki, the punk singer in a band trying to make it big and Nana Komaru, the girly romantic, it ends up being a story of young adults trying to figure out their lives. It's emotional and real, with emotional and real characters.

I'm also a nana osaki kinnie

2. Devilman Crybaby

First of all: I LOVE ryo. His character depth is EXQUISITE. Second of all: I loved loved LOOOOVED the ending. It hurts but it's realistic and makes sense. It's complex... I enjoy complexity 😌✋ The plot is introduced as childhood friends trying to save the world from "devils," but I think it's REALLY a story about love and the complexity of it; how if you're greedy and narrow minded then you'll fuck up love for yourself. If you've seen the entire show then you know why.

I'm also in love with the shot of ryo pulling out his gun and shooting the devils at the sabbath party in episode 1

3. Ouran Highschool Host Club

The characters are S O endearing. Except for Renge, she annoys me 💀 but honestly this anime is just really fun to follow. It's a girl who joins the host club as a boy in order to pay off her debt to the boys from the host club, while also making great friends with them in the process. The characters have a good dynamic and they work well with each other, especially cause they're all quite different from each other. IDK MAN I JUST REALLY ENJOYED THIS ANIME OK

4. Danganronpa

Ok so tbhhh I don't really know if this one counts cause I love the games, not diggin the anime, but I think it's referred to as an anime so whatever lmfao. Again, the characters? Great, amazing, tasty. Like I'm being fed a full course meal with a bunch of different shit in it. Danganronpa is so diverse with it's characters, like some of them are kinda out there lmao. Yes, yes, I am also a Toko kinnie 😌✋ I enjoy the story of the main games and the antagonists are MMMM M W A H CHEFS KISS. The style of it is pretty cool too. It's about kids who wake up in a school only to find of they're being held hostage there unless they kill the others to be set free, if they can also escape the Phoenix Wright style court trial without being caught.

Side note: the games were supposed to be a LOT darker than they already are, like sickeningly dark, I almost wish they were what they were going to be just so i could see how they would have turned out.

5. Black Butler

I am enchanted by the dark plot. I started watching Black Butler when I was like 13 and fell in love with it's universe. It's dark, cold, fun and thrilling. Did I mention dark? It's about a boy who makes a deal with a demon just so he can survive the trauma that was sprung onto him. Ciel is crafted as a kid who hasn't been able to heal, and probably never will. The manga is better than the anime, a lot better; but the series is SO good. This is wack to think about for me but this anime actually got me through some hard times. Not in the most healthy way, but It helped me grow a THICK ass skin because I would relate to the feeling of loneliness and revel in the only other feeling I had in me; rage. I used to kin Ciel so hard bruh

6. Beastars

This anime gives me like a sorrowful depression afterward lmao like I can't put my finger on it but every time I've gone through it and binged it it's made me like sad, even tho it's not very sad?? I still love it tho. I love the idea of a wolf falling for a rabbit and having to fight his instincts just to be with her. Also, if you're an ARMY, legoshi has Namjoon's eyes. CAN'T EXPLAIN IT HE JUST DOES MK

7. Attack On Titan

K ya it's a popular anime everyone likes BUUUUUUT it has a nice big place in my heart so it's going on this list. The development between characters throughout the anime and manga is intense. I didn't expect where the story is to this day; I don't think anyone did lmao also? When I first started reading the manga it was cause I needed to finish where the anime left off cause I couldn't wait any longer lol THE MANGA?? GIVES ME LIKE CHILLS?? Idk the manga is scary to read sometimes lol again, I can't place it, but sometimes it's so gritty I can hear the screams in my head and feel the ambiance and death in the air. I like an angry ambitious story 🤷‍♀️

8. Yuri On Ice

GREAT love story. I also love yuri plisetsky a lot. The anime is really pretty and conveys a warm feeling. The pacing is really good as well. It moves pretty fast, considering it has like what, 12 episodes? I also loved the ending because like :') yurios debut dudes :') did u see the tears :'))))))

9. Death Note

Ok so I recently rewatched this anime for probably the 4th time with a friend and realized that the pacing isn't too bad but sometimes it feels slow. Nonetheless, I love it a lot. A killer and a detective working together to capture that same killer is fun to follow. It has a really nice aesthetic and I think it's clever with various things handled in the anime. It's very entertaining, I love playing it in the background while I'm painting. Also, I have a death note 🤪

10. Cowboy Bebop

This anime is different from most animes I get attached to, mostly because it loosely follows a plot but REALLY i think you could prolly tune into any episode and grasp what's going on. It's JUST space shananagins dude. Again, beautiful aesthetic. Cute characters. I love how cyborg man has a bonsai room like cmon that's such a cute character detail.

VERY Honourable Mentions

One Punch Man

K but one punch man is so funny wtf and it's very quirky and fun. Just the thought of a low budget superhero who isn't recognized as a superhero & can only kill bad guys with one punch & hates it is kinda funny idk man, mf does his deed of the day and then panics cause he needs to make it to the supermarket on time for the sale that's going on lmao

Soul Eater

Of course, great characters, great plot. Really good animation style. Funny with a dark aesthetic ♡

Your Lie In April

Okay hear me out. I haven't actually finished it yet. I just know that the characters have so much depth that I've been sucked in. I also don't think I've ever seen an anime THIS beautiful. Like really, this anime blows me away with how beautiful it is sometimes. It makes me rlly sad for some reason tho. Pretty music romance that'll remind you of your childhood mmmm

~10 Characters from 10 Fandoms Tag~

Oooh fun! Thank you so much for the tag @lydzisanerd This list is in no particular order. Also just want to add that this was very difficult to do because I can’t just pick one favorite from each (anime) fandom. 😢

1. Ukai Keishin - Haikyuu!!

Started off my HQ! journey crushing on Daichi (and I still do, he shares a first place with Ukai tbh), but my feelings for him randomly hits HARD when I see him rage drives back to school to get Kageyama in his little yellow car.

He’s so hardworking: running the store, farming, coaching the team, AND spends his free time coming up with strategies instead of passing out? Sure he may be grumpy at times (which I find hilarious), but I don’t blame him. Seeing all the little proud smiles, cheering and glances at his baby crows when they learn something new just gets my heart fluttering. Very husband material ✅

Like his protective dad reflex is on point ^

2. Touta Matsuda - Death Note

He’s a cinnamon roll who just wants to do something correctly for once! Honestly, everyone in Death Note has their own dark side, and having him on screen is such a treat.

I sympathize with him, I know how it feels to think that you are incompetent when you compare yourself to others, especially if you are the youngest person, and when you fear incompetence, some moves you do can end up poorly if it was done out of frustration instead of logic. But that doesn’t stop him, he keeps trying and I look up to him for that (though it gave L a big headache lol). He also just wants someone to love him 😭 Must protect.

3. Sokka - Avatar the Last Airbender

Another funny character that I love very much! It’s been a while since I’ve seen this show, so forgive me if I got somethings wrong.

He’s not a bender, but that does not stop him from continuing to grow stronger, as he later picks up sword fighting and so on. Like Matsuda, he teaches me that it is ok to feel not so great when you accidentally compare yourself to others (because his sister is freaking strong), but you should use that feeling to encourage yourself to grow in your own way; and that it is ok if your attempts are a fail sometimes.

He’s also hella cute and he actually makes me laugh.

4. Iruka Umino - Naruto

Another husband material character. Stable, kind and loving, he’s passionate about what he does and he cares about his students. Maybe I just have a thing for older responsible characters who takes care of children, who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️

And he’s a little adorably clumsy sometimes.

5. Levi Ackerman - Attack on Titans

He’s a popular character, so I’m not surprised that I ended up liking him a lot too, and I totally understand why. I’m not usually into stoic and violent characters, but after reading about his past and seeing the little gestures of protectiveness and care he does to his comrades and close friends, I respect him. Also a dad, but like, a tough love kind of dad lol.

His fights are always so badass, he moves like the wind!!

6. Hanataro Yamada - Bleach

Someone...please protect him. I love his character so much, and I know he’s usually there for comic relief, but I can’t help but smile every time he does. Another character who struggles with feeling weak and incompetent, but this boy is trying his best. He’s willing to step up to protect the ones he love even if he KNOWS he’s going to lose and is very scared. I respect that a lot, and I just want to give him the warmest hug.

Also, something about his relatively tired face and soft voice that juxtaposes his “high level” of energy and enthusiasm is hilarious to me. He’ll pull all nighters to heal his friends when they need him, he’s just someone you can rely on.

Look at him goo!! 😂

7. Seijuro Shin - Eyeshield 21

I honestly don’t know why he was my favorite from the series, I don’t really remember much about the manga tbh, since it’s been well over 10+ years since I’ve read it/seen the anime. But I remember gasping when I see him on the cover of the issue and I was staring at it for a while. One could say he was one of my earlier manga crushes?

But I recall him being a little awkward and his unawareness of his strength is hilarious.

8. F. F. - Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure, Stone Ocean

A hilarious simple minded character, or should I say Plankton, hahah! There’s so many characters in JJBA, but I just think F.F.'s (poor) attempt at being a human is funny, They also remind me to drink water every time they make an appearance, so that’s an added benefit.

9. Jean-Jacques Leroy - Yuri On Ice

Ok ok, this character gets a lot of dislikes, and the reason why I like him is deeper than the fact that he is a ridiculously attractive talented Canadian ice skater okaayy? Hear me out.

There are many times when I would cringe and get second hand embarrassment at some of the things he’s done, but he’s not really trying to hurt anyone. This man is trying to chase his dream, and prove his self-worthiness to his family and the people who supports him. And he’s also just trying to get people to eat lunch with him, dammit.

Instead of simply bathing in the love and cheer of his supporters, his people pleaser personality backfires, and the pressure of not letting people down becomes too immense. I believe he gets to where he is because he is an example of someone who feels incompetent (once again), but is never afraid to pick himself back up and keep trying.

Unlike Yuuri (Who I also really like), he doesn’t have someone like Victor to work with him on his fears technically (I know he’s engaged, but she’s not an ice skater, so all she can do is cheer from the sidelines, instead of being on ice with him). He’s devastated but it did not stop him from picking his head back up to smile and try again.

He’s just a harmless awkward people pleaser boy who does not understand how to fit in with the others, because he grew up around his big family, and that is the only world he knows how to be a part of. I think the others were a little unfair to him when they keep ignoring him. He just makes bad jokes that happens to upset Yuri, though I’m sure that if Yuri approaches him maturely and tells him how much it bothers him, he would stop and apologize.

10. Spike Spiegel - Cowboy Bebop

Tbh I never finished the show, the story telling style is just not for me, but I might try again sometime in the future. However, I kept watching it for a while because I really enjoy Spike’s characterization. He’s so relatable, especially in parts where he’s just trying to recover from his hangovers, and his fights are very entertaining to watch. I feel a sense of authenticity in him, because he acts exactly the way he wants to, and he has no shame. Also, his playful demeanor and crazy appetite is endearing.

what do you think of anime/manga as a medium for storytelling/art? I really like your analyses on Fatal Flaw on all sorts of pop culture genres and mediums and would like your take on it!

hmm....that is an interesting question, because I have a really good way of telling what my opinion of it is. Ok well Manga is easy, I thin Manga is like western comics, it has tremendous potential if it can just discipline itself a bit. Its actually the exact issue that Manga has. The two I’ve spent the most time on are Vinland saga and Berserk

Anime...I don’t know. I love animated visuals as a medium because I like how uninhibited it can be and how much storytelling it can transition into a single frame, but I never know if i....get Anime. Like I watch some anime, namely

Death Note (first season only) FMA (2003 is better) Now and Then Here and There, everything by Studio Ghibli, EVA (Neon Genesis Evengellian) , Baccano, Berserk (original), Ouran Host Club, Melencholy of Harahi suzumiya, Mushishi, Attack on Titan (but lets be clear its fascist as fuck), Madoka Magica, Azumanga Daioh, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, and part of digimon Trainers.

I mean I actually I’ve seen more, i just...don’t like most of it, like I utterly don’t get the appeal so much of what people say is classic anime.

So that feels like a pretty solid selection of anime, but I also have never seen Cowboy Bebop, and I am really not part of the anime cultural scene. So when I watch a lot of anime I have this awkward feeling of

“Is this stupid or do I not get it?”

Like there are so many bad storytelling conventions in anime, its like Japan had the ability to do decent pacing taken away from then as punishment for Denying the Rape of Nanking, I don’t know what it is, but almost every anime plot feels simultaneously too rushed and like every episode is 50% padding. Like, was anime at home drunk while every other medium went to “Basic story telling” class (video games arrived late). Because with so much anime out there, its weird to me that you have 20 min episodes filled with like 5 mins of content, the constant repeating of information the audience were already told, and then characters stating out loud “OMG I AM THINKING THIS THING AT THIS MOMENT” Or other characters going “NOBODY COULD POSSIBLE DO THE THING....OMG HE DID THE THING....WELL HE CAN”T POSSIBLY DO THE OTHER THING....OH CRAP HE DID THE OTHER THING”

And i’m left going “Is this just terrible story telling infecting the entire medium, or am that one asshole at the modern art museum who is like “WAH THIS ISN’T REALISTIC WHY?” So i’m always left being like “Is there a medium thing that is going over my head or like a Japanese cultural reference that I just am too ignorant to be aware of, or is this entire genre just reusing tropes mindlessly without ever wondering why and its chocking up the entire genre”

So....I have thoughts on anime, but I’m always willing to try more out. Once I finish rewatching Breaking Bad I’m going to finally watch Cowboy Bebop.

I know I’m way behind in terms of the newer anime on this list. I actually was an avid anime consumer in my junior high and early high school days, but it fell out of my interest. It wasn’t until I started college that I started to find interest in it again. So I’ve been trying to catch up on all I’ve missed in the past five or six years I’ve missed.

After this next week (finals, wish me luck ;-;), I will be opening up request for literally whatever. I’m going to be looking around for some of the prompts/list thingys and such I see floating around on Tumblr from time to time to use for requests. I’m not sure what to do and I’ve never done anything like this before so I’m sure there are going to be hiccups. Any suggestions would be helpful please and thank you!

My fanfic, “Cuff Links,” on AO3 will be updated within the next couple weeks with a brand new spanking chapter, yeehaw. (Don’t worry guys I’ll be fixing the AO3 links so it looks ~better~ and more ~”professional”~ or whatever.)

In a society where more than 80% of people are born with quirks(super powers) a small, quirkless, good bean named Midoriya wants to be hero!! Does he do it?! Ye, he does, it’s literally the first line of the anime. Please watch it, it’s 100000000% the best.

Hunter x Hunter!

Another green haired small bean wants to be a hunter(hero)!!! Basically Damn, this anime will never be finished. The author has had a whole span of health issues over the years so it’s unlikely the manga will ever be finished. None the less, it’s entirely worth the watch and while the ending is open it’s still well done.

Fullmetal Alchemist!

Features two M.C.s with disabilities and dead parents. Two alchemist brothers travel the world looking for the Philospher’s Stone + other spooky stuff happens. Ok, so a thing about this anime, it’s so bomb there’s two different series for two different endings. I linked you the happy ending(Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood), if you enjoy torturing yourself watch the original Fullmetal Alchemist first. The original ending will make you appreciate the happy ending x100.

Ngl I stopped really starting new anime once I caught up with ft manga in 2015. Thats not to say I didnt ever watch any after. Rather, I just never liked anything quite as much. But i do really really love a lot of what I've seen so I feel I should credit them.
