Seriously, you gotta hand it to the Mizuchis. Just stealing Junko’s paintings and showing them as their own would be enough for most villains. The Mizuchi’s are clearly powerful enough to turn everyone against Junko and silence her! ! It’s all they had to do! BUT OUR GIRLS CAN’T BE CONTENT WITH SUCH MEDIOCRITY!

They had to have a motorcycle gang break her hand! Beat up her mother! Kill her mother with snakes! Drive her to the streets! Steal her painting, humiliate her, and then, before she can even really process all that, IMMEDIATELY MURDER HER WITH YET ANOTHER SNAKE. A SURPRISE BOOB SNAKE. SEALED FOR FRESHNESS IN A LEATHER CATSUIT.

All this over a high school art contest.

It’s commitment you have to admire.

These realist pulpy fifties style covers to these volumes are so weird- I mean “pulp” is definitely how I would describe Sukeban Deka (PULP OF THE HIGHEST ORDER), but it contrasts so weirdly with the art inside in the way manga covers usually don’t. Also who the hell is the girl with her bra out for whatever reason I seriously cannot tell.

Anyway, like any good vengeful lover, Saki is getting a good atmospheric grave scene (I want “she received a decisive counterpunch from that bastard called death” to by MY eulogy now) where she curses the world and then zooms off on her motorcycle.

It’s been so long it took me a while to find my place again! We return to Sukeban Deka, chapter 2.3 of volume 1. Saki’s TOTALLY SISTERLY THAT’S ALL SHE SWEARS feelings for Junko emerge. You keep telling yourself that, hun.,

1. Remi never actually had time to look up “genocide” herself but she’s pretty sure its dictionary definition is “when you bury some kids you don’t like in an avalanche, explode some other kids by throwing motorcycles at their bus, burn some other kids alive, then you and your sisters toast to their deaths while chilling with venomous snakes in an empty classroom” and honestly, do YOU want to be the one to correct her on this? I didn’t think so.

2. I love how she shortened “the genocide plan” to “the g plan” for convenience sake but then every time she has to say “the g plan” she’s so disappointed by how uncool it sounds she has to follow it up with “TO CLARIFY, BY THE G PLAN I MEAN...THE GENOCIDE PLAN” thus wasting even more time.

3. poor junko imagine just overhearing this conversation, like what would you even do with your life after this, how could you alert or explain this to anyone, they would find it extremely funny and you would honestly have to agree.

HAHA NO AS IT TURNS OUT OUR EVIL SISTERS HAVE PLANNED AN ELABORATE SCHEME TO

1 gather all their “enemies” (enemies being random high schoolers) in a bus, promising a fun school trip!

2. on the way to the fun school trip that bus must naturally traverse the scariest-ass cliffs imaginable

3.HAVE THEIR ON CALL BIKER GANG APPEAR OUT OF NOWHERE AND LEAP OFF THEIR MOTORCYCLES SO THEY CRASH INTO THE BUS, THUS FORCING THAT BUS OFF A CLIFF AND KILLING EVERYONE IN A FIERY EXPLOSION.

it’s really the most foolproof, sensible plan to deal with people you don’t like. but they didn’t count on Saki’s mad yoyo skillz giving her the ability to escape falling buses, so it wasn’t a PERFECT plan.

Saki revealed herself as the DELINQUENT DETECTIVE and we get the hard numbers that 100 people died. to get a little too real for a second, that’s almost double the body count of any mass shooting in history???? but hey, school’s still in session! we’ll let the local teen delinquent take care of it!

I mean, I think stomping on the hand of the girl who’s desperately, barely clinging to side of a cliff after barely escaping the burning wreckage of the horrible incident that just killed a THIRD of your students is actually FAIRLY likely to make her fall to her death in most circumstances, but hey, maybe they don’t cover that in teacher school.

but lets be fair here, dude is mad at Saki because he thinks as the only one to survive, she MUST have planned the crash, because whenever one decides to hire a motocycle gang to crash into a bus full of students, one must make sure to be on said bus to properly supervise one’s employees! They DO cover that in teacher school.

oh hang on, i’m sorry, i should have never said the mizuchi sisters plan was something as pedestrian as having a biker gang crash into a MERE busload of their high school enemies! they also engineered a fire and an avalanche to kill some other poor saps at the exact same time.

how big is this school? how many people are even left at this point????? i mean i guess surely any school would shut down after this-

oh never mind schools gonna go on like normal the principal is just whining about receiving some cranky phone calls while the chairman has to quit, gotcha. well i mean studying is important

It’s been a while since we were talkin’ bout Sukeban Deka, so let me recap: Saki made friends/possibly mmmmmooore with Junko, the Sweetest, Purest Girl in The Universe. 

Unfortunately, Junko earned the ire of the EVIL BOSSES of the school, a trio of sisters (one of whom is a sadistic lesbian who takes out all her enemies with an army of venomous snakes, and honestly, goals), by being picked for the local high school art competition. The Boss Sister with art aspirations responded to this the way anyone would: by running over Junko’s hand with a motorcycle, beating up her mom and stealing all her paintings, then sending a box of venomous snakes to Junko’s mom in the hospital. Saki rushed in and decapitated the snakes with her yoyo, but alas not before they did their job and killed Junko’s mom very dead. Let’s hope the hospital will learn from this and be more cautious with the next ominously hissing box they receive.

God, Sukeban Deka’s a great manga.

Anyway, Saki is on a bus now for a fun school trip, which I’m sure will be break from the constant absurd tragedy of her life.

AND HERE WE HAVE SAKI DECAPITATING AN ATTACKING VIPER WITH A YOYO. AND BEATING THE OTHER VIPERS TO DEATH WITH A YOYO. AS YOU DO.

THIS is why I have a soft spot for this manga. Where else will I get an opportunity to type sentences like that.

I’ll give this to manga Junko- she’s definitely a “too good for this sinful earth’ character, but in a way where she’s shown to have some serious grit. It’s pretty badass for her to not only keep trucking along after all she’s been through, but FINISH AN ENTIRE PAINTING IN TIME FOR THE EXHIBITION DESPITE HER MANGLED HAND. 

This is sadly absent from the OVA, where the order of events is basically gets assaulted, meets saki>talk with her about absent moms at her house and they bond (which i do think making concrete parallels between her and saki was a good move)> gets tormented> get kidnapped. She didn’t have much opportunity to show her determination like she does here.

And you can see this is part of the reason Saki likes her too, when she first meets her and Junko tries to play off being beaten up as simply taking a spill, she says “you’re more stubborn than you look” with a smile. And here she oversees her and encourages her, seeing how hard she’s working. I wish we’d gotten to see a bit more of this side of Junko and how that’s something Saki can really connect with, but WE GOTTA KEEP THE TRAGEDY COMING.

 And oh, is it coming now that Emi has found out. Whats more, Junko’s mom recognizes the suit as the guy who hit her, so now she’s a threat to the sisters too.

Meet the Mizuchi sisters! Some writers like to use subtlety with their villains, but those writers are COWARDS. Shinji Wada prefers lines like “E V I L runs in our blood” followed by cackling.

BTW Remi,  blonde curls, is an EVIL LESBIAN to top it off. Her sister repeatedly calls her a slur in this scanlation, which I’ve cut out jic it’d be upsetting for anyone. And she’s so over the top with it I can’t even be mad or anything, it’s delightful, so is she.
