Anxious & Bewitched {nessian}
Ship: Nesta x Cassian Summary: College AU; Nesta loses a bet and has to go on a date with Cassian to a haunted corn maze. T/W: None; Fluff
Written with @snelbz
As Nesta opened the passenger side door and dropped from the cab of the truck, a chill breeze had her tucking her hands into the folds of her thick sweater.
The driver-side door closed behind her and she took a deep breath.
She had no reason to be nervous. There was no reason to be nervous. It wasn’t the first time they’d hung out together, wasn’t even the first time it’d just been the two of them, without the rest of their friends. But this time… This time was different.
He appeared around the front of the truck. “I told you I’d come around to get your door.”
Reigning in the urge to roll her eyes, Nesta muttered, “Yeah, well, you were taking too long.”
He laughed, as he always did when he was clearly exasperated by her. She wondered if somewhere, deep down inside, Cassian secretly wanted to throttle her instead of being amused by her annoyance. She wouldn’t be surprised if he did.
“Most girls—” With one look shot in his direction, Cassian stopped speaking and cleared his throat. “Like corn mazes,” he finished, even though she knew damn well that wasn’t what he was going to say. “Do you?”
Nesta shrugged. “I don’t think anyone really enjoys corn mazes. We all just do them because it’s a tradition.”
“Glad to see you’re excited,” he muttered and shoved his hands in his pockets as they walked toward the ticket booth. “I hope you don’t get scared too easily. They say this is the scariest maze in the county.”
Nesta glanced at the setting sun, barely still in existence. She gave it fifteen minutes before they were in complete darkness. “Do I seem like someone who gets scared easily?”
They reached the front of the line, which saved Cassian from having to answer the loaded question and headed for where the festivities would be starting as soon as the sun fully set behind Ramiel in the distance.
“So,” Nesta began as she looked around at the stands and vendors around them. “I believe the stipulations were one dinner and one trip through the corn maze.”
“And apple cider after the maze,” Cassian reminded her with a wink. The bet they’d made last week over whether Azriel or Elain would earn a higher score on their English lit midterm had won Cassian a date with Nesta, after over a year of rejections. He would make it count.
Nesta’s dramatic sigh was mostly for show as she said, “Right, how could I forget? Where do we start?”
“Dinner?” He asked, gesturing to the stalls they paused before.
Chili, soup, and roasted chicken legs; kettle corn, funnel cake, and, of course, hot cider. The options were limitless and as Nesta’s stomach rumbled hungrily, she realized her appetite was as well. “I could eat.”
After a quick discussion over what they each wanted and whether or not it would count as a date if they weren’t eating the same thing, Cassian led Nesta to an open picnic table, placing her bowl of hearty tomato soup in front of her as she sat down. Rather than taking the seat across from her, Cassian sat next to her, the heat of his thigh against hers as he took a bite out of the massive chicken leg he’d decided on.
He ate like an animal and Nesta hated to admit that she found it oddly attractive.
Nonetheless, she said, “You eat like a barbarian.”
“I eat like a man,” he corrected and nodded towards her soup. “Are you going to pretend to sip that thing like a lady instead of devouring it like you want to?”
The word devour from his lips sent a chill down her spine. She’d read too much smut.
And yes, yes she was.
Nesta took her sweet time sipping her soup, just to spite him. He was finished in less than a minute but he waited patiently for her once his food was long gone.
Half an hour passed before Nesta’s bowl was empty and by that time, the moon and the stars were shining brightly in the night sky. Cassian took care of their garbage and clapped his hands together as Nesta stood from the picnic table.
“Ready?”
She sighed, even as a whirlwind of anxiety and excitement swelled in the pit of her stomach. “I guess I don’t have a choice, right?”
His grin was intoxicating as he said, “Not at all.”
They lined up behind a group of high school students, Cassian recognizing the green and silver of their letterman jackets from the next town over, and sat in companionable silence as the teenagers planned how they’d make their way through the maze. They discussed who would lead, who was too scared and would walk in the middle, and who would bring up the rear, making sure those people from the middle wouldn’t fall behind.
Before they knew it, the excited giggles of the group became shrieks and howls of laughter as they meandered deeper into the maze.
Then it was their turn.
“After you, Nes,” Cassian said, gesturing to the long walkway ahead of them. It faded into nothing but darkness and he swore he heard her swallow before she turned to him.
“I don’t think so. This was your idea, so you get to go in first.”
The attendant rolled his eyes and held an arm out toward the entrance. “I’ve got a line and you’re backing it up. You can go in together.”
Nesta opened her mouth to protest but Cassian took her by the hand and pulled her into the maze. Before she could even catch her breath, they were enveloped in corn stalks, the shrieks and screams of others radiating around them.
Nesta’s body grew taut, so much so that she hadn’t even realized that her hand was still in Cassian’s until they turned their first corner.
“So,” he began, and she could see his smirk in the outline of the starlight, “not scared, huh?”
“I swear to the Cauldron, I will leave right now if you don’t shut up.” The words rushed out of her. She took a deep breath, then another. “I’m not scared. I’m just—”
A guy dressed as a bloodied up zombie jumped out of the cornstalks and Nesta screamed.
But it was Cassian that jumped nearly a foot in the air, a long string of profanity tumbling from his mouth.
Nesta stared at him.
Cassian, chest heaving, stared back.
Then, despite herself, Nesta laughed.
With an exasperated sigh, Cassian took Nesta’s hand again and dragged her away from the still snarling zombie.
“Holding my hand a little tight there, aren’t you?” She asked, once they had moved farther into the maze. He could hear the smile on her face, but didn’t look at her as they surged forward. “Don’t worry, Cass, I’ll keep you safe.”
A twig snapped at their backs and Nesta whirled, turning to face the…empty path behind them. Her eyes darted around, searching despite not seeing anyone or anything there.
A terrified scream from somewhere deeper within the maze had Nesta gasping and clutching onto Cassian’s arm with her free hand.
“I could say the same for you,” he snapped, and cursed when the sound of a chainsaw began to rev from somewhere in the maze. “I’m having a blast.”
“Me too,” she hissed, grounding herself in the warmth of his body. She had never felt so annoyed and so safe at the same time. Maybe if she closed her eyes, this whole experience would be so much more enjoyable.
Ignoring the fact that she was clinging to Cassian for dear life, Nesta continued to make her way through the maze, wishing she was literally anywhere else every time they came to a dead end.
They had just gotten away from a psycho in a hockey mask when Cassian said, “I have no clue how to get out of here.”
Nesta looked down the creepy pathways before them. “I don’t either. Isn’t there some trick to getting out of mazes?”
Snapping his fingers, Cassian took her hand and began pulling her down the path to the right. “Right turns only.”
The psycho in the hockey mask was waiting around the next turn with the rest of his team.
“Why do you even like this stuff?” Cassian demanded as they stopped to catch their breath, warily looking around at the corn stalks, waiting for someone to jump out at them.
“I don’t,” Nesta replied, peeking around the corner, cringing at whatever she saw. “I hate it.”
When there was no response, Nesta glanced over her shoulder, half-expecting him to be gone. Instead, she found him staring at her.
“What do you mean you hate it,” he asked, eyes on hers.
“I mean, I hate getting scared,” she snapped, looking back around the corner. “Slashers and horror movies are the extent of my interest in being scared.”
He muttered under his breath, “I’m going to kill them.”
With her brow furrowed, Nesta turned to find him shaking his head. “Who?”
“Feyre, but I’m sure it was Rhys’s idea, too.” He stepped up behind her, finally seeing the clown standing in the middle of the path and stepped back. “When I asked her for an idea of what you’d want to do, she said you’d love this. That you love haunted houses.”
Nesta tried her best not to gape but couldn’t help herself. “She said what?”
Cassian just shook his head, dragging Nesta past the creepy ass clown.
“You don’t like this, either?” She asked, when he said nothing. Cassian just shook his head, and Nesta scoffed. “Wow.”
“Being scared pisses me off,” he admitted. “Which, your sister knows.”
A realization hit Nesta as they turned yet another corner: he hated being scared, but he brought her here anyway.
Because he thought she would love it.
She hadn’t realized she was staring at him until a second clown popped out of the stalks and Cassian’s hand gripped onto hers so tightly that it hurt.
Nothing else was said until they reached the end of the maze, just a few minutes later. There were no other big scares, nothing else to take any additional years off of Cassian’s life and he wished his sigh of relief when they finally walked out into the open air of the festival wasn’t as loud as it was. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, beyond thankful that the entire ordeal was over and he’d made it out alive.
“Alright,” he said, exhaling one last time and looking towards the stalls. He’d seen someone selling hot cider when they’d first gotten here. “I could go for some cider. Honestly, I’m down for something stronger, if you are, but—”
A tug on his hand had him leaning down and then a warm kiss was pressed to his cheek.
For a moment, he stilled, thinking what had happened hadn’t just happened, but when he met her gaze, she almost looked as surprised as he was. Her eyes were wide and hesitant, glancing hectically between his eyes and his mouth. Cassian swallowed, scared to say or do anything to break whatever the hell was going on here.
“Thank you,” she said, quietly but firmly, eyes locked on his.
“For what?” he asked, blinking. “You were miserable.”
“So were you,” she agreed, and shook her head. “So, thank you.”
“I wanted you to have a good time,” he admitted, brushing his fingers against hers. “I didn’t want you to regret having said yes.”
Her fingers grazed his again, but then she laced them together. “Technically, I didn’t have a choice, since I did lose a bet after all,” she said, voice taking on a teasing tone before dropping back into something softer as she smiled. “But I’m glad I came. I’m glad I said yes, Cassian.”
She glanced down at their joined hands, squeezing his fingers once before she met his gaze. His eyes were already on her and he couldn’t help but stare in awe at how beautiful she was.
Blushing, Nesta cleared her throat. “So. You owe me a drink.”
Cassian hesitated. “Cider? Or…”
“Something stronger may be nice.” Nesta breathed a laugh and Cassian couldn’t help but smile. “Something to take the edge off.”
Cassian couldn’t deny that. He could use the same thing, something to take the edge off. “There’s a bar two miles up the road. I think it’s a biker bar, but it seems… Well, I’ll keep you safe.”
Nesta raised a brow. “Maybe I’m the one to keep you safe.”
Cassian sighed. “You can’t ever just say okay, can you?”
Nesta pretended to think about it. “No.”
Yet, with a wicked smile, she dragged him by his hand to the parking lot - which was nothing more than a field marked off with rope - until they were at his truck. Still holding her hand, Cassian opened the passenger side door and helped Nesta up inside before rounding the truck and climbing up behind the wheel.
The ride to the corn maze had been okay. Conversation had been awkward. Not bad, but a little forced. The ride to the bar was nothing like that. It was brief, but by the time Cassian put the truck in park and cut the engine, he had Nesta dabbing at her eyes as she laughed at a story he was telling her about a prank he and Azriel had pulled on Rhys when they were in high school.
“To this day, he can’t stand the smell of tartar sauce,” he said, shaking his head as unbuckled his seatbelt.
She did the same, laughter still shaking her shoulders. “I don’t blame him, I don’t think I can think of it the same way either.”
With a grin, he opened the door, hopping down and rounded the truck. When he opened her door, he offered her his hand. “You waited this time.”
Her cheeks darkened just a bit, but her eyes sparkled as she said, “Well, I wouldn’t have wanted to take your chance to be a gentleman away.”
“Again,” he added.
Nesta rolled her eyes. “Again.”
After taking his hand, Nesta hopped down from the cab and he locked the truck behind them as they made their way inside the bar. It was pretty busy but they managed to find a little table tucked into the back.
“What’re you drinking?” Cassian asked after Nesta plopped onto the bench.
Nesta lifted a brow. “Surprise me.”
Cassian chuckled. “You trust me that much?”
“We’re about to find out,” Nesta crooned.
Suddenly nervous, Cassian made his way to the bar and waited for the bartender to find her way towards him. He took the time to decide what drink best represented Nesta Archeron.
In the end, he returned to the table with two drinks and two shot glasses.
“What’d you get?” She asked, eyeing the drinks as she set them on the table.
“Jack and Coke,” he said, hovering his hand over the first. Then the second. “Vodka cranberry.” Then he slid one of the shot glasses in front of her and took the other himself. “And a shot of tequila for us both, in case you hate either of those.”
Grinning, she looked back at the drinks. “And if I want the Jack?”
“Then it looks like I’ll be having a pink drink tonight.”
Rolling her eyes, Nesta nudged the Jack and Coke closer to him and took the other. “I like both, but this is my favorite.” She picked up the shot glass and held it out to him. “Cheers.”
Clinking his glass against hers, Cassian tossed it back, before placing it top down on the table. He did his best not to make a face, but found himself chasing his shot with his drink. Blowing out a brisk breath, he asked, “So am I to assume that haunted corn mazes aren’t a part of your yearly Halloween traditions?”
Nesta shook her head, leaning back in her seat. “Absolutely not. I’ve never even been to a haunted house. Feyre and Elain used to try and get me to take them in high school, before they could drive, but I’ve never liked it.”
“Me either.” He drummed his fingers on the table next to his drink. “Why would I want to pay someone to scare me shitless?”
With a laugh, Nesta agreed. “What about you? Anything you do for Halloween every year?”
“Pumpkin carving. Hands down.”
Nesta scrunched her nose.
Cassian blinked. “Do you have…an issue with pumpkin carving?”
“It’s so messy,” she said, sipping from her drink. “And I hate the feeling of all the guts between my fingers. No, thank you.”
Cassian shakes his head, eyes narrowed in her direction. “What kind of person hates pumpkins? Who hurt you?”
“I like pumpkins.” Nesta laughed. “I just like them intact.”
“You’re missing out,” he said, and his toe nudged hers until the table and lingered. “Maybe you should give it another try. Maybe you’ve done it wrong.”
“You’re very passionate about carving pumpkins,” Nesta chuckled.
“I prefer calling it pumpkin art, but yes I am.”
Nesta laughed again and Cassian stared at her in awe. It was nice to see her laugh, smile, be happy instead of glaring daggers in his direction.
He looked away from her, his finger circling the rim of his glass. “You could come over, one night this week, if you wanted. We could carve a couple pumpkins. I’ll handle the guts, all you’d have to do is the fun part.”
Raising her eyebrows, Nesta asked, “And what exactly is the fun part? The stabbing?”
“That and realizing that what you carved looks absolutely nothing like what you planned.”
With a snort, Nesta asked, “I thought you said it was pumpkin art?”
“I did,” he replied with a shrug, but the corner of his mouth was lifted up in a smirk. “But I never said it was good art.”
Tipping her head back, Nesta laughed. When she was done, she brought her glass to her lips and took a drink. “I’d love that.”
Cassian was almost shocked by her revelation. “Yeah?” She nodded but Cassian tried not to get his hopes up too much. “How about Wednesday?”
Nesta slowly set her glass back down. For a second, she hesitated, but then she said, “I can do Wednesday.”
Nearly dropping his glass, Cassian stared across the table. She was not only on a date with him now, but agreed to another in only a few days time.
Either he was dreaming…or she was already drunk.
Maybe a bit of both.
After a few more drinks, Cassian glanced at the clock over the bar and saw that it was pushing midnight. “We should probably go. You said you work at nine?”
With a groan, Nesta nodded. She worked at the library on campus and the librarian was not lenient about tardiness and attendance. “Bright and early.”
Drumming his fingers on the table, Cassian stood. “I’ll pay our tab and we can get out of here.”
By the time he returned, Nesta had finished her drink and was slipping her purse over her head.
His hand fell to the small of her back as they left, the crack of pool balls and droning of the jukebox in the corner fading as they walked out the front door.
As soon as they were outside, Nesta shivered. “It’s definitely fall,” she said, tucking her hands under her arms.
With a laugh, Cassian wrapped an arm around her shoulders and tucked her into his side, not letting himself second guess the move. “It’s almost like you should have worn that coat I mentioned when I picked you up.”
“I’d rather be cold than admit defeat,” she joked, but Cassian sensed there was a bit of truth to it, even as she leaned further into him. “Besides, you seem to like my lack of a coat.”
He did. “I wouldn’t like it if you were to die of hypothermia.”
Nesta snorted. “Once again, look who's being overdramatic.”
She let him open her door and help her into the truck, before it roared to life and he headed back into Velaris. On the ride back to her apartment, Nesta admitted she’d never been to a high school football game, much to Cassian’s dismay.
“What did you even do on Friday nights?” He demanded, glancing over at her as they stopped at a red light.
“Stayed in and read.” She said it like it should have been obvious, and honestly, it probably should have been.
“We’ll have to fix that, too,” Cassian said, just as the light turned green. “There’s nothing like being under those lights, the sounds of the game.”
Nesta lifted a brow. “There’s also nothing like curling up in bed with a good book.”
Cassian shook his head, amused. “You can’t tell me that reading is better than a real life experience.”
“Football is not a real life experience,” Nesta protested but that playfulness in her tone remained. “It’s a sport where people are either getting injured or praised way too much. Sometimes both.”
Cassian looked over to find her already watching him with the smallest of grins on her mouth. “So hateful.”
“I could say the same for you,” she crooned.
“Fine,” Cassian laughed. “You come with me to a game and I’ll read whatever book you give me.”
Eyebrows raising, Nesta asked, “Whatever book I give you? Any book of my choosing?”
“I already feel like I’m going to regret this, but yes.” Cassian pulled into the parking lot of Nesta’s building. “Any book of your choosing, as much or as little smut as you want.”
Nesta’s cheeks darkened. “I’ll start thinking then.”
He put the truck into park, looking over at her. “I can’t wait.”
The cab of the truck was silent, as her eyes met his. It felt quiet, intimate, safe. Softly, like speaking too loudly would shatter whatever was building between them, Nesta said, “I had fun tonight. Despite getting the shit scared out of me.”
“Me too,” Cassian agreed, hardly more than a whisper. “Can I walk you to your door?”
“Yeah.”
Neither of them moved.
The realization that Cassian had no idea what to do was daunting. He had never had trouble with women before but Nesta was a different breed. He’d waited years for this moment and now that it was here, he felt he was walking on glass and it would shatter beneath him at any given moment.
Nesta cleared her throat when the silence dragged on. “Should I get my door this time or…?”
That set Cassian in motion and by the time he rounded the truck and opened her door, she was doing her best — and failing — to hide her grin.
“Shut up,” he grumbled, taking her hand and helping her down.
Her laughter was quiet, but she didn’t let go of his hand as they headed up the stairs and to her door.
“So I’ll come over Wednesday?” She asked, and it was more than Cassian could have hoped for. He’d half expected her to change her mind, to pretend she forgot, and move on.
“Yes, I mean, yeah.” He was stumbling over his words and he cleared his throat. “I’ve got a bio chem lab that lets out at three, but I’m free anytime after that.”
“Then I’ll be there after three,” she said.
Cassian's hand tightened in hers as they stood on her doormat. “Sounds good.”
“Good.” With one last smile that had Cassian feeling weak, Nesta turned towards her door.
Before he could think twice, Cassian pulled on her hand and pulled her towards him until their mouths met, softly. He was still walking that line of caution even if caution was the last thing on his mind.
But she kissed him back, each touch sweet and gentle and nothing like he expected a kiss with her to be like, but far better.
He cupped her face, her lips soft and lush against his, and breathed in her scent before stepping back. The blush on her cheeks was beautiful, her eyes bright, and her breathing was shallow and quick. He wanted to kiss her again, something more than the quick meeting of their lips, but he forced himself to take another step back, to head towards his truck. “I’ll see you Wednesday,” he said, gaze locked on hers.
“Wednesday,” she repeated, voice soft, and unlocked her door. It opened with a creak and she stepped inside. “Goodnight, Cassian.”
The door closed and he was left staring at her autumn-themed wreath. So soft, there was no way she could have heard it, he breathed, “Goodnight, sweetheart.”

My Curse to Bear [ Nessian ]
Inspired by this prompt: “Matching couple shirts that say “bearer of the curse” on one of them and ,“the curse” on the other”
Genre: Fluff/Humor Rating: SFW
“If you’re the curse, I would love to be the one breaking it.”
Cassian looked up with a quirked brow at the voice, and grinned when he found a beautiful, red-haired woman staring back at him, eyes ready to devour him. He looked down at his shirt, which in all fairness, did say in bold, capitalized gold letters ‘THE CURSE.’ He supposed this was going to happen sooner or later. They were at a festival.
He looked around momentarily, looking for the one person who would delight in hearing this conversation then returned to the clearly tipsy woman in front of him.
“This curse?” Cassian replied, pointing to himself with a cheeky grin, and the woman’s smile widened as she nodded.
“I’d want that curse a-all over me. If you’re up for it.” she replied with a wink. “I’m Neyrin.”
Cassian chuckled. “While I am incredibly flattered by this, Neyrin, I don’t think I am the one for you. This particular curse is only breakable by one person.”
Neyrin pouted. “But why? I bet I can be that person. I’m not as delicate as I look.” she said, then leaned in closer and whispered to him with a smirk, “You can crush me if you want, I can take it.”
Cassian’s grin widened. “I don’t doubt it.” he said not unkindly. “But I assure you, this curse applies to no one else but one person. I’m sorry.”
Neyrin frowned now and Cassian almost felt bad at his shut down, but she really had to take no for an answer. For her own safety.
“Are you sure I can’t change your mind?” she said and placed a hand on his chest, batting her eyelashes.
Before Cassian could do anything else, another hand shot out and ripped Neyrin’s hand off his chest, startling them both and causing her to stumble back a step.
“He’s positive you can’t change his mind. He’s not into you.” the voice said flatly and Cassian bit his lip to stop the smile from forming on his lips.
Nesta, the love of his life, with the most beautiful resting bitch face to ever grace this planet, looked at the girl with a bored expression.
“And who are you?” the young woman asked, attempting a brave face and Nesta smiled.
Nesta smiled a smile that promised violence, as she stepped in front of Cassian and leaned towards the young woman. She calmly asked, “Who am I, you ask?”
Neyrin only swallowed, as Nesta pointed to her own shirt, and the young woman’s eyes lowered to read the words in bold, gold letters on Nesta’s shirt that said ‘THE BEARER OF THE CURSE’.
“I am the only person who will be bearing, breaking, and both crushing and getting crushed by this curse.” Nesta spoke softly, dangerously, pointing a thumb over her shoulder at the hulking figure behind her and narrowed her eyes at the now, wisely terrified woman. “He only plays with me. I suggest you run along now.”
Without needing to be told twice, the girl scampered off and Cassian finally burst out laughing. Nesta rolled her eyes and turned to look at him, his expression like a child on Christmas morning.
“You enjoyed that, didn’t you?”
“Watching you tear into that poor innocent girl?” he said with an obnoxious grin. “I’m very hot for you right now, baby. You protecting what’s yours turns me on very much.”
Nesta snorted and pointed at him accusingly. “You are absolutely doing this on purpose. You put yourself in a position to be flirted with just to see how far you can push.” she said in her threatening tone. “If I commit murder one day, it’ll absolutely, totally, a thousand percent, be your fault.”
“Will you be murdering me or someone else?” Cassian only asked, his grin widening again.
“Depends on the day, really. But you’re the top candidate either way.”
“Please murder me. I bet you’ll make it sexy.” he said to her with a wiggle of his eyebrows.
Nesta very nearly laughed at that but only sighed with a shake of her head. “Be careful what you wish for, you brute.”
“I can’t help it that I’m devilishly handsome and everyone wants me.” he said with an innocent shrug. “That is the charm behind this curse you bear.”
Nesta squinted at him and then made a gagging sound. “Your arrogance is choking me.”
“That’s not the only thing I can have you choking on, sweetheart.” Cassian only said with a smirk, leaning in to kiss her cheek.
She gave him a loathing look and swatted at him which only made Cassian laugh harder.
“I swear you are the worst kind of curse to bear.” she mumbled and crinkled her nose as he leaned into her to kiss it.
“Then break me, baby. I’m all yours.” Cassian whispered in her ear, his voice husky, his grin wolfish and Nesta flushed faintly.
“I’ll have you on your knees soon enough.” she only said haughtily. “Try not to cream your pants until then.”
“My vicious, cruel woman.” he said with a chuckle and pulled her into his arms.
“Your curse to bear.” she said with a smirk as he leaned in and kissed her neck.
“Gladly and with joy.” Cassian responded and Nesta bit her lip when he kissed her right below her ear. “What do you say we get out of here?”
“Not yet.” Nesta replied and pulled away to meet his gaze and Cassian already knew he would be in trouble. “There's so much more to do and I want ice cream, let’s go get some.”
He groaned and leaned his head onto her shoulder. “I don’t think I can handle you eating ice cream in public.”
“I know.” She said and her smile was absolutely evil as she gently pulled his hair to lift his face and plant a kiss on his lips.
“My wicked woman.” he growled playfully against her mouth and she laughed, pulling away with a cheeky smile of her own. “I’ll show you when we get home.”
“We’ll see who will show who.” she promised and dragged him onward, to enjoy the rest of the festivities.
It was hard to say who broke who that evening during their passionate delights, but it was very clear to Nesta and Cassian the next morning, that they desperately needed to go shopping.
It turns out, that what they had definitely broken was a whole lot of furniture.

So I received an ask a few months ago about my thoughts on nessian having kids and then last night I had a lot of wine and this happened so, enjoy!?
This was one of those little moments Cassian would bundle up, like some cherished Christmas ornament, and tuck inside his heart forever. If his heart remained in one piece. It was so full he was worried it might break.
The smell of Nesta’s perfume and shortbread had lured him to the kitchen, where he’d found her sat at the table, bottom lip tucked between her teeth and brow furrowed in concentration as she’d iced a cookie. The beam of her high cheek bones a blushing pink in the warmth.
Cue tears brimming.
And he couldn’t even blame it on the presence of any smoke because by some Christmas miracle, his girlfriend had managed to cook something without nearly burning his house down.
Júlia had tucked herself into his girlfriend’s lap, and was mimicking her little mannerisms. Brows dramatically knotted and biting her lip. She’d even clearly tried to match their pyjamas, Nesta’s lose fitting red pants and white tank top a mirror to his daughter’s own long sleeve white shirt and fuzzy red pants.
The two of them were hunched over a cookie each, armed with little icing tubes and humming along to Mud’s ‘Lonely This Christmas’.
“One of those better be for me or it’s the naughty list for you too.”
“Daddy!” Júlia whipped her little head round, grinning excitedly in the way that children did- less actual smile more oh my god look at all my teeth.
“The one and only,” he smiled right back, picking her up as she tried to literally jump from the chair to Nesta’s terror and amusement.
He made a little mwa noise with every kiss he planted on her cheeks, and she was giggling in his arms uncontrollably. Probably hopped up on sugar if the crumbs on the table and the green frosting in her dark hair was anything to go by.
Finally he stopped and his daughter didn’t miss a beat. “Daddy me and Nesta made cookies and we even made the icing on our own and it’s all different colours and she’s really good decorating and she taught me how to draw a snow man!”
It was impossible to determine where one word ended and the other began. Perhaps his daughter had invented her own word several hundred syllables long.
“Can I see?” Cassian pleaded excitedly, putting Júlia down when she nodded so hard he was a little concerned her head might fall off.
“Hi you,” Nesta’s voice like velvet hummed soft and low as he leaned down to give her a chaste kiss, murmuring his own “hey, sweetheart”. Her lips tasted like sugar and he swore he saw a few granules dusted through her thick hair as he pulled back to asses one of Júlia’s creations.
“No way you made that!”
“I did I can show you I’ll show you how to draw a snowman too. And it’s harder than with pencils daddy, because you have to squeeze but you can’t squeeze it too much.”
“She’s got very steady hands,” Nesta said, like she was proud, her head falling back against Cassian’s chest where he stood behind her. He began massaging her shoulders gently. “She could be a brain surgeon,” his girlfriend continued.
Cassian was dangerously close to getting all choked up again.
He’d been a little worried asking Nesta to keep an eye on Júlia this evening. Not because he thought she’d let his six year old start licking plug sockets or anything. It was just they’d never hung out just the two of them before. He and Nesta had only been together eight months and he’d only introduced his daughter to his girlfriend two months ago.
But he hadn’t had anyone else to call when the snow had started falling with a vengeance on his way back from picking up a Christmas tree. It wasn’t Mor’s week with Júlia so she and Emerie had booked a Christmas mini-break, and his brothers were at a conference. So he’d called Nesta.
She’d been more than happy to pick up Lia from school and keep an eye on her. Almost as happy as she’d been nervous. He’d read it in her voice even through the phone. Nesta had never wanted kids, she’d told him as much, and it had put the brakes on their first date for a while. But Júlia had a mum, two in fact, and the idea that there was any pressure on Nesta in that department had slowly began to dissipate.
Still, Cassian had felt a tiny bit...scared. A bit crushed by his wanting them to adore each other as much as he adored them. So walking in and finding them like that, it had taken the wind out of him.
“I am going to be a baker!” Júlia proclaimed from her own seat now, knees tucked beneath her so she could reach the table.
“What will you call you bakery?” Nesta asked with genuine interest. It was lovely. She spoke to Júlia the same way she would an adult. There was no entertaining or humouring his daughter’s insane babbling, she treated every word as though it held the weight that of a wisened librarian’s might.
“Lia’s Bakery and I will you give you free cookies!”
“What about me? Do I get free cookies?”Cassian enquired. “I haven’t had a single one of your amazing cookies yet.”
“You weren’t here! And you didn’t help make them so I don’t think you should get any.”
“I was getting our Christmas tree!”
“Yes where is this tree that has kept you so busy?” Nesta demanded, tilting her head back to look up at him with arched brows. A naughty twinkle in her dove-blue eyes.
She loved teasing him, but Cassian always gave as good as he got when it came to her. With Júlia, well, his daughter got away with murder. Which Nesta found endlessly amusing.
“It’s by the front door. I think I’m gonna need a cookie to restore my energy before moving it again,” he looked to Lia.
“Fine,” she huffed. “But you’re not allowed to pick it, Nesta has to pick it.”
The way she said Nesta. Like she were one of the Disney Princess she loved to tell him about even though he’d literally just watched the film with her. It made his heart explode like a powdery snowball.
“Hmmmm, what about this one,” Nesta hummed, picking up a sugary treat frosted with a big red heart and offering it up for Júlia’s approval.
“Yes, daddy can have that one,” she nodded curtly.
“You can have a bite now, and the rest once you’ve put the tree up,” Nesta told him as he rested folded forearms against the back of her chair and hunched down to tuck his head over her shoulder, tilted a little to give her his best I-fucking-adore-you-woman eyes.
“Tease,” he smirked.
“Strategic,” she corrected, feeding him the cookie.
“Mmmmm,” he groaned. He wasn’t even putting it on, it tasted fucking delicious. Buttery and somehow melting and crumbing in his mouth at the same time.
“You’ve got a little something,” Nesta laughed, brushing the manicured pad of her thumb against her bottom lip.
“I was saving you a taste,” Cassian grinned, giving her a gentle kiss.
“Nesta doesn’t want kisses she wants the Christmas tree!” Júlia exclaimed, exasperated and impatient.
“You read my mind, Lia,” Nesta said.
Cassian chuckled, pushing off the back of Nesta’s chair and wondering back through to the front door.
Lia was hot on his heels, grabbing Nesta’s hand and tugging her from her seat.
It was a fucking massive tree, and his daughter’s eyes were wide as saucers as she took it in, halting in front of the sofa and nearly vibrating with excitement. By contrast his girlfriend collapsed onto the coach and he was tempted to laugh again. Childcare had clearly done a number on her.
But apparently she wasn’t so exhausted she couldn’t manage a little ogling of him.
Cassian might have been smirking by the time he got the tree upright in its stand, preening a little at the way Nesta’s gaze had lingered on his arms as he’d hauled 120 pounds of festivity about.
A fresh blush blemished her cheeks and she was rolling her full bottom lip between her teeth as she watched him. Knees half tucked beneath her and an arm laying across the back of the sofa, her ear resting against it and lose hair falling carelessly about the cushion.
He was going to wife her up so hard.
“Right, how about some decorations then?” He grinned down at Lia, having thrown Nesta a wink she’d batted off with a roll of her eyes.
“We did them in the colours look, we put them out colour coorninated.”
“Co-ordinated,” Nesta corrected fondly from the sofa as Cassian took in the neat sections of ornaments laid out on the floor.
“Co-or-din-ated” Júlia repeated, already on the floor and searching for the first glittering item to hang.
“We’ve gotta do the lights first though, anjinho,” he reminded her.
“Nesta we have twinkly lights and they can flash or you can leave them so they are always shining or when you click it you make it so they go like,” Lia wiggled her fingers in the air which Cassian recognised referred to the cascading setting on the lights, but knew meant nothing to Nesta.
She laughed none the less, Júlia’s happiness and excitement infectious.
“Will you show me?” She asked, propping her head up on her fist.
“You wanna go grab them, Lia? They’re in my office, on the desk.”
“Yeah I will go get them!” She yelled, already barrelling up the stairs, her little feed padding up the wooden slates like she were merely a skeleton of springs bundled up in the body of a little girl.
Nesta laughed again, a wide smile revealing white teeth and one of her beauty spots quirking in a dimple as she watched.
Once Júlia was out of sight however, Cassian was making a play for her attention. Falling onto the sofa beside her and throwing an arm around her waist.
“I think we have a problem,” he sighed happily, a smirk that promised trouble tugging at his mouth.
“We do?” She asked, letting her head rest against the pillow that was his bicep. Looking up at him.
“I only got one tree. But I have two angels.”
Nesta rolled her eyes and groaned through a subtle laugh, burying her lovely face into his shoulder and thus a telltale smile.
“You’re the worst.”
“And you, are the best,” he grinned, pressing a kiss to her hair and she looked up, smiling casual and soft. “Thank you for looking after her tonight.”
Nesta pressed her mouth to his, kissing him with a supple pressure for moment. “My pleasure,” she said as they pulled back just barely.
Cassian grinned again at that and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear with his free hand. “How was it?” He asked.
“Honestly?” She said, a hand coming to his opposite shoulder, thumb rubbing soft circles there. “Made me fall in love with you all over again.”
Brows immediately rising he let slip an, “oh shit.”
Nesta laughed. “I mean it,” she said, head tilting a little as she watched him. “I don’t think I ever actually appreciated what your being a dad meant. There’s this whole person, this kind, clever, funny person who’s just perfect and you made her, from scratch. And you’re raising her and every little thing she does is because of what you’ve taught her it just...” she trailed off. Overcome by a sentiment she couldn’t put into words.
“What are you doing this weekend?” Cassian asked. Unable to help himself. And if he hadn’t been so preoccupied with how she made his heart ache in the best way, he would’ve noticed a similar ache in his cheeks, because he was smiling like crazy.
“I know we weren’t meant to see each other and if you have plans of course you should do those but, well you’re here now, and judging by those very sexy pyjamas you’re staying the night?”
Laughing Nesta slapped at his hand playfully as it slid from her knee, up her thigh to take a greedy handful of her ass, her jersey pyjama bottoms soft beneath his touch.
“Lia and I are going to go ice skating tomorrow. She’d love it if you came.”
“Really?”
“In fact I think she’ll be heartbroken if you don’t,” he admitted.
“You sure you want me there? I know you have this sad little crush on me or whatever but you’re allowed to want time with just the two of you-“
“Shut up,” he laughed. “Of course I want you there. Really it’d just be cruel sending you home to pine over me-"
“Asshole,” she grinned.
“Daddy I will put the lights on but I need to sit your shoulders!”
They both turned their heads as Lia hurried down the stairs with strings of lights spilling over in her little hands.
“Wowwowwow slow down,” he leapt up. “We don’t run down the stairs, do we?”
“Can we sled down the stairs again this year?” Júlia begged excitedly as Cassian scooped her up at the foot of the stairs and held her at his chest with one arm.
“I don’t know what she’s talking about,” he told Nesta. “We have never once done that ever.”
His girlfriend laughed as she stood up and Júlia shook her head very seriously.
“Never ever,” she agreed.
“Then I’m going to beat you both when we do it this year, because I’m a stair sledding pro,” Nesta flicked Lia’s nose playfully.
Her wide eyed gasp made it seem as if Nesta had told her she was Santa.
“Don’t make me haul the mattresses out into the hall right now,” Cassian warned.
“Bring it, old man.”
Honestly Cassian would lose to her gladly, so long as it wasn’t the only ride she’d be taking on his mattress this evening.

Bloody Day and Ominous letters
Nesta woke up with the worst headache she had ever had in her entire life. She really should not have drunk as much as she had last night but as she saw her friends and Morrigan having fun that little voice inside her head — usually her mother’s or grandmother's saying Do better, Stop being such a disappointment or Your only purpose is to marry well so forget about love — got louder and louder, judging her company and trying to make her feel ashamed.
But she had had enough. Her grandmother and mother had both passed away already. It was time to bury them for good. So Nesta took the wine bottle from Morrigan and drank half of it in one go, her friends cheering around her. And she had so much fun. Nesta would never have guessed that drinking could be so enjoyable, nothing like those uptight parties where the ladies sipped a lonely glass all night long while the gentleman lost count of theirs. The only downside was her killing headache and the fact that she had overslept, a fact she took notice of once she glanced at the wall clock.
She had just sat up on her bed — massaging her temple to ease the tension on her head — when an insistent knocking on her door made her mumble a curse. No doubt it was either Emerie or Gwyn — maybe both of them — waking her up. Those two were quite used to drinking, so it was no surprise to Nesta that they would be up and about very early.
“Would you two stop it?” she said loudly, opening the door wearing only her chemise, probably having ditched her dress during the night while she slept “I have a killer headache and your banging is not helping at all—”
She stopped mid sentence when she came face to face with Georgianam, the young lady’s hand still raised to knock on her door, Cassian right behind her.
“Oh, I apologise Lady Nesta” Georgiana said “We had agreed that we would go on a nice early morning walk today, but when I did not spot Miss Archeron at the breakfast table I got worried.”
“Please do forgive me, Miss Georgiana. I had a bit too much to drink yesterday and ended up oversleeping.” Nesta quickly said, mentally kicking herself for her rudeness “I will be ready for our walk in a minute.”
“Lovely! I will be waiting at the parlor then!”
Nesta closed the door with a sigh. Her morning had not begun the best.
However, it was only while she was brushing her hair that her sleep fogged mind caught up to the fact that Cassian had seen her half asleep wearing nothing but her chemise and with early morning messy bed hair.
She definitely could not be allowed to drink more than two glasses of alcohol if that was how she was going to behave whenever she drank more than deemed proper.
When she arrived at the parlor ten minutes later, she could not help but avoid looking at Cassian.
“Mrs. Potts brought you a little something to eat” Georgiana informed, pouring Nesta tea “And also some headache medicine”
“Please thank her in my instead later, she is too kind to me”
“Oh, it was all my brother’s doing” Georgiana smiled in Cassian's direction, serving herself some cookies “He was the one who asked her to provide not only the medicine but also the food.”
“I appreciate the gesture, my lord.” Nesta hid her blush behind the teacup.
“It was nothing, my lady” was all he answered, refusing to look at her.
That made Nesta’s heart strangely hurt. She could not help but think he had been disgusted by her earlier appearance. Her hair was such a mess and her chemise was all wrinkled from sleep—
Wait. Why did she care so much of what he thought of her? Nesta Archeron was not one to give much attention to others opinion of herself, so why was she getting so worked up when it came to Cassian? Of course, one could not help but notice how he always looked so presentable, with his spotless clothes, hair combed to perfection every single time. She had never seen a gentleman’s hair be so… perfect. She could bet her first edition of her favourite romance that he had awfully handsome bed hair. And that he had a mint breath even when woke up. And that he probably slept shirtless, if the last time she saw him at midnight at his library was any indication of his sleeping attire.
Oh Mother, why was she now thinking about all of that? She waved an imaginary hand to disperse her not so proper thoughts, focusing on the small talk Georgiana was making.
Both Nesta and Cassian kept avoiding each other during their walk, which did not pass by Georgiana without notice, especially given how her brother had made sure to stay two steps behind them, giving the excuse he wanted to give both ladies “privacy to talk comfortably”, something he had never done. Their walk, however, was cut short when Nesta showed signs of being tired and admitted that her headache had not disappeared.
“I assure you it is nothing to fret over” Nesta told a worried Mrs. Potts when they came back “It must be from yesterday’s drinking. There is no need to call a doctor.”
“Nonetheless, I will ask Chef Ramsay to prepare some light food and my special hangover drink” the old headmaid said with a motherly expression.
Thanking Mrs. Potts again, Nesta went to her room to splash some water on her face in hopes of refreshing herself. But a painful jab low on her stomach made her freeze and the blood drain from her face.
~•~
“Just knock on the door, my Lord” Lumière said as he watched Cassian drop his hand once again. The maître d’ had been watching his lord pace in front of the parlor door for what must have been twenty minutes.
“I do not want to bother her. Maybe I should call Mrs. Potts or wait until the other ladies come back” Cassian ran his hand through his hair in distress. Emerie and Balthazar had gone out with Morrigan to visit some possible new business partners — her big circle of connections proving itself to be very useful in helping expand their business — while Azriel and Gwyn had gone to the town, which was helding a small music festival. Georgiana, on the other hand, had received a telegram from a friend who had returned early from their trip abroad, and she had promptly gone to meet them.
“This, dear brother, is your chance to speak to Miss Nesta” she had said before leaving “I do not know what happened to make you both so distant, but you better make amends. I already asked Emerie to design the gown I shall wear at your wedding.”
Cassian had told Georgie to mind her own business and stop being such a busybody, proceeding to stand guard outside the parlor.
“Leave the lord alone” Cogsworth hissed, elbowing Lumiére “Her ladyship has not asked for help so it must mean she is fine and does not wish to be bothered.”
“Nonsense, old friend!! The lady is simply too shy to ask for it and the lord too polite to risk disturbing her” taking a step forward, Lumière knocked on the door.
“What do you think you are doing?!” the major-domo whisper yelled, and Cassian was sure he would have throttled Lumière were it not for the faint voice coming from the other side.
“Please, do come in” Nesta said.
Taking a deep breath, Cassian opened the door, leaving behind Cogsworth and Lumière, who were trying very hard not to start a duel right there.
The first thing he looked for was Nesta.
Nesta, who was rather pale and was clutching a pillow very hard against her stomach.
“Are you alright?” he asked, not knowing whether to sit beside her or just stay standing a few feet away.
“I am” she said, although the deep breath she took had him thinking it was not true “Where are Gwyn and Emerie?”
“Gwyn went to the town festival with Azriel. An Emerie went with Mor and Balthazar to meet prospective business partners.”
“Are you really alright Nesta?” he asked again “You do not seem fine at all if I may say.”
“I assure you I am perfectly fine” Nesta insisted through clenched teeth “Where is Georgiana?”
“At a friend’s house. They returned early from a trip.” Cassian said, a bit annoyed she was asking for his sister when he was right there. It was a stupid jealous feeling, and he was not even more annoyed because he felt glad they got on so well.
“Do you know when any of them will be back?”
“I am afraid I do not know” daring to approach her, Cassian sat beside her on the sofa “But I am here. If there is anything I could do…”
“There is no need to bother yourself. I truly am—”
And that was when Nesta whimpered and clutched her pillow even tighter, doubling over a little bit.
“You are definitely far from fine sweetheart” Cassian said, rubbing her back in hopes of helping her, nevermind proper etiquette.
“It is really nothing. Just—”
“Just what?”
“Lady stuff!!” Nesta finally said, her whole face heating up like a fireplace.
“Oh. Oh! I see. I— I understand” he said, also a little bit flustered “Not that I actually get it but I have also experienced pain and—”
Nesta wished the ground would open up and swallow her. She was used to getting her period, it was a monthly occurrence. Nothing out of the ordinary. However, this time it seemed her body had decided to punish her more than usual. Not only had she gotten a killer headache — made worse by her hangover — but she was cramping very badly, and they usually were not that bad. That was why she had gone to that walk with Georgiana, even though she was getting mildly uncomfortable soon after they arrived at the garden.
Not that she did not want to miss any Cassian time.
Him going with them had been a bonus.
A surprise, but not a pleasant one.
Maybe just a bit pleasant if she was being honest. Just a tiny tiny bit.
“I will stop talking now” Cassian mumbled, interrupting not for the first time her errant thoughts.
She wanted to die. To tell Cassian — even indirectly — that she had gotten her period was the most mortifying she had ever experienced.
“I can get Mrs. Potts for you” he tentatively said, restarting the back rubs “She can get you some tea for pain. Or a bag of warm water. You can tell her anything, do not worry.”
Nesta managed to nod her head in agreement, despite her stubborn side that refused to ask for help from the maids or other servants at Pemberley.
Cassian himself went looking for the head maid instead of just ringing for her, assuring her he would be back in less than ten minutes. And he did come back in record time with Mrs. Potts, who gave her tea and pain tonic that she assured Nesta made wonders for stopping cramps. All the while Cassian hovered over Mrs. Potts, unsure of what to do.
“Do you require anything else? Maybe another blanket?” he asked after Mrs. Potts had left. He had made sure to bring back a blanket too and had even tucked her in with extra care “Or more tea? I can ask someone to come and bring fresh hot tea”
Nesta would never have imagined Cassian to be such an overbearing mother hen. He was being extra careful around her and it annoyed her beyond reason.
“Cassian, this happens every month. Has been happening since I was thirteen, alright? Can you please stop?” she snapped.
She regretted her words as soon as she realised how rude she had been and what exactly she had said. However, he was being so overweening. As if she was made of glass or was on her deathbed.
Yet all Cassian did was crack a smile and nudge a chocolate muffin towards her. Nesta had been in such pain and so quiet he had been concerned if Mrs. Potts’ pain tonic would really work. But there she was.
There was the feisty, sharp tongued and quick-witted Nesta he knew.
There was the Nesta he fell in love with.
He barely held his tongue back and risked blutering his feelings right in front of her. Again.
“May I get you a book then? It is a good way to pass the time until your friends are back.”
“Thank you. That would be lovely” Nesta gave him a soft smile, her previous embarrassment having died down a little.
He was gone and back in a record time, and Nesta delusioned herself into thinking he had raced to the library because he did not want to leave her for too long.
“I got the book you were not able to finish last night” Cassian said, handing her Sellyn Drake’s latest romance “And I also took the liberty of getting one of my favourites too. In case you finish this one quickly.”
She thanked him again, curious as to what book was his favourite, what made her even eager to finish her current read.
Turns out Cassian was a fan of epic poems, a fact that — combined with his admission of having read Sellyn Drake’s romances — once again made Nesta view him with new eyes. She had thought he would be more of a war strategy person, all business and serious matters. Yet it seemed that Cassian had a dreamer inside of him.
“How many times have you read this book?” Nesta asked as she turned a yellowed page. The book was old, but she could see it was very loved given its good condition.
“A lot of times. It was my favourite book as a child, and I could not part with it once I moved out of my childhood home” he gave her a smile “It was also my dear companion during long expeditions. I have most of it memorized.”
“I bet you charmed every single lady during your travels with your knowledge, wooing them with beautiful words” she teased, despite the small pang of jealousy in her heart.
You refused his hand and humiliated him, she thought, you have no place to feel jealous. Cassian is a wonderful gentleman, it is expected to have women falling left and right for him, not to say him pursuing them.
“You are actually the first person apart from my family who knows that I read poetry” Cassian admitted “And I also have never met someone that made me want to declare a poem to”
Nesta did not know what to say to that. They were bordering dangerous territory, something that seemed to happen more and more frequently.
And Cassian, seated right beside her, was thinking the same thing. He had allowed himself to get closer to him again, something that yesterday he had vowed to avoid, had tried to do that morning. But to see her in pain, uncomfortable and not talking to him hurt more than those moments in which he could see a life with her. Those moments with Nesta were a double edged sword: he craved and loathed them with the same urgency.
He would kill to have even a single moment with her.
He would die if he had even a single moment with her.
Nesta made him want to be selfish.
Made him want to declare poems to her, maybe even attempt to write her one.
At the moment, he could not help but recall a certain verse of the Epic of Gilgamesh:
What could I offer
the queen of love in return, who lacks nothing at all?
Balm for the body? The food and drink of the gods?
I have nothing to give to her who lacks nothing at all.
You are the door through which the cold gets in.
You are the fire that goes out. You are the pitch
that sticks to the hands of the one who carries the bucket.
You are the house that falls down. You are the shoe
that pinches the foot of the wearer. The ill-made wall
that buckles when time has gone by. The leaky
water skin soaking the water skin carrier.
To Cassian, Nesta was the goddess of love. And he was the one who could not offer her a single thing for she lacked nothing.
“Well, I will not disturb your reading any longer” clearing his throat to break the new tense silence between them, Cassian gestured to the book in her hand “But do feel free to make comments while you read, I would very much like to hear your opinions about it.”
And she did just that. Every passage she found interesting, each line that caught her eye and interpretation she had about a certain phrase, she shared them all with Cassian. Somewhere during their conversation that awkward tension between them disappeared completely, with Cassian letting his arm rest on the back of the couch, getting closer to Nesta. And Nesta somehow ended up getting closer to him too, almost leaning on his side.
It was all very improper. Cassian staying alone with Nesta, so close to each other and acting as a married couple.
But Cassian would let himself be selfish one last time.
One last time before they had to go their separate ways.
~•~
The day would have ended perfectly were it not for the letter that Gwyn brought once she and Azriel had come back.
While Emerie, Balthazar and Mor had arrived late in the evening — with good news of new partnerships being agreed on — Gwyn and Azriel had come back much later, just when everyone had finished dinner. Nesta had not been too worried, she trusted Azriel to take care of Gwyn and her friend was not bound by the stifling high society etiquette, but she breathed a little easier when they finally arrived.
“Oh Nesta, we passed by the inn we were staying at before and the landlady gave me a letter addressed to you. It seems she had forgotten to send it to us yesterday when our things were brought here.” Gwyn gave her the letter once they had moved to the game room “She apologised deeply for it.”
“I understand, it is a busy season for them.”
“It is a letter from Feyre” Nesta furrowed her brows in confusion as she broke the letter’ seal, which she recognized as being the one representing Feyre’ status as Duchess “She sent one barely a week ago, I wonder what could have happened.”
Nesta had guessed it would be another letter from Feyre asking about how their trip was going, if she had seen beautiful scenarios and bought any souvenir for her youngest sister. Or even a curious inquiry about what she thought of Cassian. Feyre had been quite interested to know if they got along — she had always been a busybody and matchmaker, and since marrying Rhysand had tried time and time again to nonchalantly push her to Cassin. If she ever discovered that Nesta had already been proposed by Cassian — and that she had refused his hand — chaos would befall upon Nesta.
However, as her eyes scanned the lines, Nesta’s assumptions of its contents proved to be far away from reality. She felt her blood run cold, her heart stop beating and fear. So much fear.
“Excuse me” she managed to say, getting up “I need a moment.”
“Nesta, are you alright? What did Feyre say? You are very pale” Gwyn said, her voice full of worry.
“I am fine. Just cramps” she brushed off her friend’s worries. She did not want to make the others notice that something was off with her, she did not want to alarm Gwyn..
Yet as she exited the room she failed to perceive that Cassian had been paying attention to her ever since Gwyn gave her the letter. He was always paying attention to his surroundings, especially when she was around.
He left the room a few moments after her, trying not to raise suspicion to his attitude. He did not know where she had gone — Pemberley was vast and her room was too far away for him to not have caught her faster — but something led him to the small outdoor patio just left from the small gallery he had at Pemberley.
As he got closer and closer there, he heard the sound of someone crying, which made his heart beat faster and a deep fear grow inside him.
He arrived outside to find an unimaginable scene: Nesta crying. Crying as if her heart had been ripped out of her chest.
She was a mess, her careful braided hair coming undone, as if she had ran her hands through it in desperation.
“Nesta… Nes dear, what happened? Is Feyre alright?” Cassian did not care that she most probably left the room to cry in private. He was worried, he needed to be beside her, he needed to help her somehow.
“I— Feyre she—” she was sobbing so hard she could barely breathe, let alone talk, making Cassian’s heart break in a thousand pieces.
“Shh it’s okay sweetheart. I am here Nes” he gently cupped her face, making her look at him “Take deep breaths with me.”
He took a deep breath, holding it in for three seconds before letting it go. He kept doing it until Nesta did the same, slowly calming down.
“Can you talk now? Do you want me to fetch you some water?” Cassian asked, tenderly brushing off her remaining tears.
“No, I— I can talk now” Nesta took another breath “Feyre is alright. It is Elain.”
“Elain? Is she sick? Talk to me Nes, help me understand”
Elain was the picture of the perfect lady in high society. With her numerous suitors, lovely and delicate behaviour — not to mention her singular beauty — it was hard to find someone who did not like her. Given that her hobbies — cooking and gardening — did not pose a threat to her health and well being, Cassian could not understand what would have made Nesta react so strongly. Perhaps Elain had fallen ill, something that rarely happened.
“No. She is not sick” Nesta shook her head “Cauldron, I almost wished she was sick.”
“Elain was…. Elain was kidnapped” she added, her eyes filling with tears again.
“Kidnapped? How?”
That made no sense, who would kidnap Elain? And why?
“She was going to visit Feyre. And when she didn't show up Rhysand went to search for her and—” Nesta started to cry, desperation filling her voice “They found her carriage turned over and hidden near the outskirts of the city. No sign of her at all.”
Cassian was speechless. He could only imagine how Feyre must be feeling after she got the news and hoped Rhysand was doing his everything to help find Elain.
“The coachman was killed and her lady in waiting was rushed to the hospital.” she cried even harder “This is all my fault. I should never have left her. We have no male relatives and Feyre is living too far from our childhood home. I was supposed to take care of her.”
“Nesta, it is not your fault. You could never have guessed something like this could happen.” he looked deep in her eyes, the blue in them even brighter because of her tears “Is there anything I could do to help?”
“I am afraid there isn’t, '' she whispered “I have to go back home. Try to hire an investigator, talk to Feyre and hope Elain is not disgraced by society rumors. Hope she is alive”
Cassian could only nod in agreement and wait for Nesta to recompose herself before they went back inside. Their friends were as horrified and worried about the situation as he and Nesta, and decided to go back right that moment. The staff noticed something was amiss and made sure to ready the carriage in record time.
“Thank you for welcoming you at your home” Nesta said, her complexion a bit better “I can assure you we all had a wonderful time here.”
“It was my pleasure. Have a safe travel and remember that Pemberey is open to you and your friends whenever you want to visit” Cassian helped Nesta get on her carriage one last time, letting go of her hand begrudgingly.
And as Nesta and her friends got farther and farther from Pemberley, as Nesta got farther and farther away from him and took his heart with her, Cassian felt a calm fury settle inside him.
He had some letters to write to some old friends.

My Curse to Bear [ Nessian ]
Inspired by this prompt: “Matching couple shirts that say “bearer of the curse” on one of them and ,“the curse” on the other”
Pairing: Nesta x Cassian (Nessian) Genre: Fluff/Humor Rating: SFW
“While I am incredibly flattered by this Neyrin, I don’t think I am the one for you.
“If I commit murder one day, it’ll be absolutely, totally, a thousand percent, your fault.”
Nesta squinted at him then made a gagging sound. “Your arrogance is choking me.”
“That’s not the only thing I can have you choking on, sweetheart.” Cassian only said with a smirk, leaning in to kiss her cheek.
She gave him a loathing look and swatted at him which only made Cassian laugh harder.
“I swear you are the worst kind of curse to bear.” she mumbled and crinkled her nose as he leaned into to kiss it.
“Gladly and with joy.” Cassian responded and Nesta bit her lip when he kissed right below her ear.
Turns out, what they definitely had broken was a whole lot of furniture.

All fics are nessian and definitely not child-friendly but any that feature explicit smut are marked with a ** and those that flirt with a lil’ lemony content are marked with with just one. My inbox is always open.
Lethal Combination
Growing up not knowing where her next meal was coming from didn’t exactly satiate Nesta Archeron’s appetite for the finer things in life. But at twenty-four such things are a collateral comfort; from her gorgeous apartment in New York, to the trigger finger that paid for it, Nesta Archeron has a lot of things. One thing she doesn’t have though, is a boyfriend, something her youngest sister Feyre seems intent on remedying when she sets Nesta up with her brother in law, Cassian. Now she has something else to add to her list of things: a big fucking problem.
chapter one *
“Hey Feyre, just calling to say that I know you want me to go on this blind date, but I actually can’t because you see, I’m a gun for hire, which as you can imagine makes dating rather tricky. Also I’m absolutely gone for my latest target’s bodyguard, who I’ve never actually spoken to but in the month and a half I’ve been stalking him has somehow managed to make me fall head over heels for him. Anyway, we still on for brunch on Thursday?”
chapter two *
She knew it was irrational to be angry at him. But something uncomfortable and tight wriggled in her chest at the way he was looking at her. Because it wasn’t her he was looking at like that. Instead, it was the random girl he thought she was, all pristine ringlets and baby blue gaze like a god-damn angel.
chapter three **
God this man could kiss. He kissed her like her full lips were some overripe peach spilling a too soft sweetness he’d die before wasting a drop of, hungry and slow and indulgent he devoured her with an abusive and perverse affection.
chapter four **
Nesta’s hands might have been trembling slightly as she knelt to the floor and lifted one of the bathroom tiles, revealing what for all intents and purposes, should have been a bible. It wasn’t of course. It’s was an industrial safe.
chapter five **
“And I thought we’d grown out of sharing toys, but it seems both our expectations were thwarted.”
“Humans aren’t toys!” Feyre reminded her. Not that Nesta didn’t already know that. No vibrator had never made her cum as hard as Cassian had.
chapter six **
“Feyre only thinks she wants me there, Cassian. She’ll change her mind as soon as Rhys implies I think I’m better than him for not touching the carrots his private chef put too much butter on and I call him a hedonistic asshole who loitered round playgrounds looking for a wife before meeting Feyre.”
“Maybe don’t do that then?”
festive fluff
This was one of those little moments Cassian would bundle up like a cherished Christmas ornament and tuck inside his heart forever. If his heart remained in one piece. It was so full he was worried it might break. (Modern AU)
seasonal smut **
“I figured we could both be naughty tonight and save Santa the trip,” she said, licking her upper lip in an arcing motion with the tip of her tongue. Eliciting a number of lovely memories that made his already half-hard cock stir. (Modern AU)
hogwarts au
He’d have know that bracelet if it had hit him in the back of the head, which it had done before, twice. He’d watched Nesta tucking her hair behind her ear in a potions class or giving him the middle finger enough times to recognise the interlinking charms that normally graced her pale wrist.
“cassian begs nesta to wear a couples costume with him for halloween.” **
Cassian Siphon was her equal in ambition and lust for a challenge, but he didn’t seek to sooth his raw passion and volatility with a carefully curated air of intimidating class like Nesta did. He also had the impulse control of a teenager. (Modern AU)
“bikini shopping with your best friend is a lot harder when you’re in love with them” **
Thrusting her plethora of perspective bikinis into his arms she turned on her heels. “Come on, I need to try these on” she sauntered off and Cassian couldn’t keep his eyes off her ass as she lead him toward the dressing rooms. (Modern AU)
