Thinking about how before Joshua was born Clive went through the ceremony that would prove him to be the Phoenix. He's deathly serious and has probably been that way even before. He would've gone, so excited and so proud to make his mother and father happy.
It would end with him utterly crushed going back to them for comfort and he gets nothing from the mother that gave birth and raised him. Elwin still loves him all the same, doubly so as another Rosfield that the Phoenix passed over put into the lordship role. Clive knows its all going to happen again when his mother gets pregnant again. Anabella never wanted a kid she wanted the Phoenix. Clive became less than human.

not that it would make me feel good in the story, but im bummed there wasnt a chance to fight ramuh and shiva directly, or a semi-primed dion or cid. or joshua (again)

I don't think the story and themes of FF16 are pointless. I don't think the growth and resolve from Clive is pointless because of how the game ends. Living and dying on their own terms is the entire goal Cid passed onto him and Jill. Part of that is, sometimes, it really does lead to death.
The one whose story is pointless is Ultima. To Ultima his will is ultimate and the concept of anything else having its own will is incomprehensible. Yet his entire goal entirely hinges on humans, on Bearers, and the Mythos. Humans were made to be used and discarded by him, yet he needs Clive. In the end Clive does become more powerful than Ultima, especially after absorbing his power, but it's revealed Ultima's plan never would have worked.
Clive's body, even as supremely powerful as it is, can't handle Ultima's power. Ultima's plan ends in failure whether he won or lost. If he had won, the world would have no doubt been just as doomed as he had made it.
It's shown that Ultima is too stubborn to even acknowledge human advancement and how similar they are to him. Unlike Clive, who would take the final crystal down with him to start the world anew, Ultima would have no doubt faded away changing nothing about his mindset, or even continue to run just as he had to the continent.
It's sad, yes, but I personally don't think it's a bad ending because of it. Would I have preferred Clive and everyone alive? Could they have gona about it a different way? Certainly, but I like it as it is just as well.
