I do so adore the end of Mawaru Penguindrum but I can't deny that it'd be even better as the origin story of the Nerima Daikon Brothers

Watching last week's Drawfee and getting reminded of Anime Network of old and god.... god how I miss it.
Petite Princess Yucie, Princess Tutu, Jing: King of the Bandits, Kaledio Star, Nerima Daikon Brothers....
Those were like my absolute faves.... I gotta rewatch those.
#Mika shushup#It's been so fucking long#Anime Network is still going but there's not a lot of variety these days.#It just seems to be all the moe blob and isekai table scraps that Funimation/Crunchyroll wont pick up.#With like one or two bangers in the mix.#They don't even have music videos anymore...

We've come up with the following lore so far:
-it's a wacky, absurdist comedy of the kind we often like but which languish in obscurity and/or get poor reviews (Papuwa, Nanbaka, Nerima Daikon Brothers, etc etc)
-the school is a finishing school for Young Ladies of Quality and most of the teachers are vampires
-presumably most or all of the students are also monsters
-all of the vampire teachers are also assassins
-the home ec teacher is a werewolf who is not an assassin and knows literally nothing about it
-every season there is one (1) target whom the teachers are competing to kill first (and constantly failing)
-whoever kills the target gets a Christmas bonus
-当 Maria 当 is the math teacher
-a couple of her colleagues are interested in her but she is completely oblivious
-there is an entirely separate plot going on with the students
The other night I was plagued by a string of nightmares the culmination of which was my friends and I going to a very sketchy arcade whose only working feature was a line of seriously outdated gatchapon machines, each of which had 2 different properties in the machine.
I tried to get Little Creature Man or one of his friends, that being the only show that I had seen, but instead pulled a figurine of 当 Maria 当 (for those of you who do not speak Chinese, that's pronounced "dāng") a "confused" vampire assassin/boarding school teacher from an obscure show called Planets Slutland (it did not appear to be ecchi it just has an unfortunate name) whose rating on My Anime List wasn't even a number it was literally just the word trash.
But pulling her made me feel better, like if anything cursed followed me home she would protect me. I'm very grateful to her, because I had genuinely been having a really bad night. So I wanted to put her out into the universe so that maybe she can also protect other people's dreams if they need her.
Also I'm low-key obsessed because, after all, this is the obscure B-tier anime character my brain made up for me. My roommate and I have been coming up with lore for her and the show in general.

2021's A Year of Anime
Part 4
Barefoot Gen
This movie was brutal in depicting the bombing of Hiroshima and the aftermath of the disaster. It was based on the manga and the experiences were based on the author’s, Keiji Nakzawa, life as he lived in Hiroshima. I know the animation isn’t as unique, but for the 80s they managed to show some graphic and haunting imagery. It does have a little hope towards the end, but it doesn’t change the fact that the effects of Hiroshima was serious.
Redline
Yo! This movie was freaking dope as hell! The animation was incredible and went full-drive to go extreme. I think the story is average, and the dub cast did a good job. All you need to know is that watching Redline is an absolute ride that everyone needs to get on.
Kyousougiga
I watched this show because of the director, Rie Matsumoto, who directed the first season of Blood Blockade Battlefront. The animation is super creative and wild with its style & colors. I like the story, sub cast, and music. It’s a short anime, so you can finish it in a day. It’s really good!
Colorful
Life is hard and surviving an attempt changes your perspective of one’s life. This movie has decent animation and a good sub cast. However, the movie depicts suicide in a way I didn’t think any anime would ever do. It’s not perfect, but I admire how real and isolating it can be. It’s a solid movie that you should see.
Napping Princess
This movie has a larger than life concept of a girl who dreams of an alternate universe that parallels to her own life. It is animated nicely with a good music score. I think the story could have been done better, but the visuals sold me.
Kimi ni Todoke
I adore the show for its animation and showing a pure, loving couple who admire each other for their personalities. I admit some storylines could have been shorten, so we could have seen more of Sawako and Shota’s relationship bloom. The sub cast were good, the music is wonderful, and the heart of the show really makes the show special. I wish we could have another season, but I’m still glad the show made it official that Sawako and Shota are a couple.
Nermia Daikon Brothers
I see why this show is one of a kind because there’s not a lot of musical comedy anime out there. It is wacky and entertaining to watch. It does some problems and crude humor, and the sub & dub cast were good. It’s wild, but at least the songs are memorable.

My takeaway from the first three episodes of “Given”:
- Who hates themselves so much that they’d play an instrument that requires tuning of six strings every time they play it
- j/k, we all know that Guitars Are Cool, but what is a bigger social suicide than to carry a guitar case around at school when you don’t know how to play it
- Particularly given that you wear a bloody cardigan (do they... actually get away with that in Japanese schools? I mean, it’s anime so probably but it keeps bothering me)
- The last music anime I watched was Sound! Euphonium, which is obviously about a vastly superior genre of music, and also about girls, and also gorgeous, but also kind of eventually so boring that I never got into the second season. Given is surprisingly preoccupied with music, but it’s already looking to be amping up the drama, so I hope the non-kyoani visuals will be substituted with an interesting story.
- But the best music anime will always be the one that wasn’t about the music at all

Gonna live a helluva dream today; one that don't involve a hoe. A dream not of money but of music that we sing in the show.
