OKAY I JUST THOUGHT OF THIS BUT NEPTUNE AND SUN?
LIKE I KNOW THEY’RE NAMED AFTER SPECIFIC THINGS AND THEY’RE WITTY REFERENCES BUT THEY’RE BOTH IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM
AND NEPTUNE IS COLD AND FAR AWAY FROM THE SUN, ALWAYS PINING FOR ITS WARMTH, ALWAYS LOOKING LONGINGLY AT IT FROM SO FAR AWAY AND IT SETTLES FOR WHAT IT GETS AROUND IT
I HAVE KILLED MYSELF WITH MY OWN METAPHOR GOODBYE

Fic: What gave it away?
Pairing: Seamonkeys (SunxNeptune)
Word Count: 1405
Summary: Neptune hopes that avoiding his problem is going to make it go away…but then his problem finds him hiding away in the library and starts asking questions. Sun is a persistent problem… (Basically Neptune has no idea how to properly deal with having a crush)
Warnings…ish: mild language and kissing
A/N: Here's the romance as promised :)
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
Neptune was not avoiding Sun. He was just...really busy lately.
He was hiding out in the farthest reaches of the library because he had a lot of studying to do. He was eating his meals at weird times because he was just distracted by school. He was practicing his fighting technique in an empty classroom late at night because he liked the solitude.
He wasn’t waiting for the fluttering in his chest to go away. He wasn’t waiting to stop blushing whenever he made eye contact with his friend. And he most certainly wasn’t waiting to stop daydreaming about golden hair, a soft tail, and a bright, dangerous smile.
Neptune was also a big, fat liar trying to convince himself that he wasn’t head over heels for his best friend and trying to hide it by just never seeing the object of his affections ever again.
Neptune was in the middle of resting his head slightly aggressively against a library table when his delusions caught up with him.
“Nep! There you are! Fuck man, I thought you’d died...where the hell have you been? No one’s seen you in days!”
Okay, maybe by avoiding Sun, Neptune had also been inadvertently avoiding everyone else. Where there were people, there was Sun…
“How did you find me then?”
“Scarlet.”
“Fucking Scarlet…”
Sun looked annoyed when he sat down in the seat across the table from Neptune. He squinted suspiciously at all the closed books in front of Neptune.
“You didn’t answer my question.”
Neptune blushed and busied himself with flipping through the first book he grabbed.
“Nep...where have you been?”
Neptune tried to sound casual, “Oh, you know...here, class, combat training...the usual stuff just more of it.”
Sun’s eyes narrowed. “I believe you, Nep. But the thing is I’ve been doing all that stuff too and so have our friends...is there a reason you’ve rearranged your schedule so much so that we never see you anymore?” Sun’s expression took on a worried, pained look. “Did we do something? Did I do something?”
Neptune looked up quickly, uncomfortable with Sun blaming himself for what was entirely Neptune’s own fault. “It’s not you Sun. Not at all.”
Sun looked annoyed again. “So what is it then? Why haven’t I seen you in days?” Sun deflated a bit, his voice turned sad and upset, “I miss you…”
Neptune’s heart clenched painfully. This was the opposite of what he wanted. All he had wanted was to hide out until his weird feelings went away so he could go back to normal and be Sun’s best friend again.
Neptune knew he needed to say something that would reassure Sun. He decided to stick with the truth but be as vague as possible and hope that that would somehow free him from Sun’s expectant stare.
“I um…” Neptune stuttered and blushed and internally smacked himself for starting this conversation so clumsily. He cleared his throat and started over, running a hand over one of his books to calm himself down.
“I’ve kind of...started having feelings for a friend.”
He heard Sun suck in a breath but Neptune didn’t dare look up so he just plowed on with his explanation.
“And it’s really not something I’m equipped to deal with so I’ve been avoiding everyone until I can get rid of these feelings and be normal again…”
Neptune trailed off and kept staring at his book. No one spoke for a long while. The silence stretched on to the point where Neptune was worried Sun had somehow left without him hearing, so Neptune steeled himself and looked up.
Sun was looking at him with an unreadable expression and it seemed like he was deciding which emotion to settle on. Eventually concern won out and Sun spoke up in a low, worried tone.
“Nep...you know having feelings for someone isn’t abnormal, right? You don’t have to hide away until you’re “normal again.” Did you think anyone would think differently of you?”
Neptune let out a strangled, hysterical laugh that he quickly choked off. “Pretty sure the person I have feelings for would think of me differently…”
Sun’s face flickered through several emotions quickly again. “Why would you think that?”
Neptune scowled and in a wavering voice said, “Because why would anyone so perfect return my feelings?”
Sun frowned deeply, coming around to Neptune’s side of the table. He shoved a bunch of books to the side and sat down on the table right in front of Neptune.
“Is that really what you think about yourself?”
Sun’s angry/concerned/scrutinizing face was very close to Neptune’s and Neptune found this really unfair to his thought process.
“I um...what?”
Sun growled in annoyance. “Neptune.”
Neptune’s eyes went wide and his body went very still. Sun only called him by his full name in moments of utmost importance. Neptune could count on one hand how many times that had happened.
He cleared his throat and answered nervously, “Y-Yes, Sun?”
Sun held Neptunes attention with the earnest look in his eyes as he started speaking again.
“You are beautiful, Neptune. You’re smart as hell and every day your combat skills get more and more impressive. You’re a loyal friend and the most caring person I know.” Sun’s face relaxed into something soft and fond. “Plus, you have really cool hair.”
Neptune’s heart was racing as he struggled to process the barrage of compliments Sun had just given him. Sun’s kind words had given him enough confidence to try something that he hoped wouldn’t be the stupidest thing he had ever done. As Sun reached up to ruffle his friend’s hair, Neptune leaned forward to kiss him.
Neptune’s lips trembled when they met Sun’s but the warm, soft pressure he was met with calmed his shaking. Sun’s hand that was meant to playfully tousle Neptune’s hair was now threading its fingers through the blue strands. As Sun played with his hair and dragged his lips gently over Neptune’s, Neptune sighed a bit, all the tension from the past few months of pining melting away under Sun’s soft reciprocation.
They continued trading warm, slow kisses for several long minutes, Neptune’s hands migrating to Sun’s shoulders, steadying himself on his friend’s solid presence. Eventually Sun pulled back from his mouth, tilting Neptune’s face upwards with a gentle hand on the back of his head. Sun pressed small, lingering kisses all over Neptune’s face, causing the other boy to blush lightly at the attention.
“S-Sun?”
Sun hummed, planting a kiss to Neptune’s temple.
“Y-You like me?”
Sun kept his hand at the back of Neptune’s head, stroking his hair slowly.
“What gave it away? The part where I called you beautiful or the part where I kissed you back? Or maybe it was when I said you had cool hair…”
Neptune opened his eyes (When had he closed them? He couldn’t recall.) and gazed up at Sun’s face, frowning at the amused smile that greeted him.
“Did you know I had a stupid crush on you?” Neptune felt his voice waver with embarrassment.
Sun’s face softened again and his eyes filled with something a lot like adoration.
“Nah...but I had hoped you did. Because my stupid crush on you was getting pretty ridiculous.”
“Oh,” Neptune said breathlessly, brain a little too overwhelmed to come up with a more eloquent response. He wasn’t sure what to do with himself now that the fluttering in his chest was from happiness instead of assumed unrequited feelings.
Sun drew Neptune’s attention back to him with a firm kiss to his forehead.
“Nep,” Sun smiled brightly, joy radiating from his whole being in a way that had Neptune melting pleasantly. “Be my boyfriend?”
Neptune felt like he had swallowed his tongue so he resorted to nodding frantically.
Sun laughed, leaning closer to run his tail through Neptune’s hair. He seemed to be admiring the gold and blue together when he said, pure relief evident in his voice, “Good...now you have no reason to avoid me anymore. You shouldn’t avoid your boyfriend, Nep...”
Neptune sighed happily and reached out to pet Sun’s tail lightly. “Thank god...it takes way too much energy to avoid you. I need a nap.”
Sun’s bubbling laugh started up the fluttering in Neptune’s chest all over again, and Neptune reveled in finally being able to enjoy the feeling of no longer running from it.

Fic: You want us to team up together someday, right?
Pairing: Seamonkeys (SunxNeptune)
Word Count: 1033
Summary: Occasionally Neptune lets his role as the smartest kid in class get to him and he overlooks the important things. Luckily, Sun is there to help him. (And poor Sun is starting to have feelings lol)
A/N: Still gen friendship…will move into romance in the next part…which is not done being written yet so it may not come out as quickly as all the rest of these fics have so far.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
“Nep! I’m back from combat practice! You should have totally come. There was this guy who--”
Sun stopped abruptly when he turned around from throwing his bag on his bed. Neptune was sitting at his desk, fast asleep with his face pressed against a book.
Sun snuck closer and settled his hand gently in Neptune’s hair, looking over his friend’s shoulder to inspect all the notes and books spread out across the desk.
“Aw, Nep...this test isn’t until three days from now…”
Sun moved his hand from Neptune’s hair to his shoulder, shaking him gently, trying not to startle him too badly.
“Come on, Nep. Time to wake up, buddy. We gotta get dinner before the cafeteria closes.”
With a grunt and a violent jerk, Neptune was awake and looking around blearily.
“Sun?” He rubbed at his eyes sleepily and Sun tried to violently smother the part of him that found that absolutely adorable. “I thought you were gonna go do combat practice…”
Sun smiled and laughed a bit. “Dude...I already did. How long were you asleep?”
Neptune’s eyes widened in panic, whipping his head around quickly to look at the clock on the wall. He rubbed at his face roughly.
“Oh no no no no…I messed up my study schedule! Now I’m way behind...I’ll have to skip dinner to make up for lost time.”
“Hey whoa! You’re not skipping meals, Nep. This test is three days from now. You have time.”
Neptune looked up at Sun with a tortured expression. “But I have a paper to work on and I’m way behind on my combat training...and I really should do some more research for my weapon.”
Neptune was holding up a finger for each task he named. Sun’s frown grew deeper.
“And I really need to start thinking up a topic for my term paper and I haven’t done laundry in weeks and--”
“Easy there, tiger...is the reason you’ve got all this stuff piled up on you because you’re too stubborn to ask for help?”
Neptune arched an eyebrow, pausing his panic for a moment to be incredulous.
“What? This is my work to do...we’re all students at the same school, we all get the same work. I gotta do this stuff, Sun. So do you...so does everyone else!”
Sun squeezed Neptune’s shoulder when he realized he was working himself back up into a frenzy.
“Yeah but...I get you to help me with my work all the time. There’s a bunch of students who meet in the library for study halls so they can help each other...No one can do this stuff completely on their own, Nep.”
Neptune’s face scrunched up in utter confusion and frustration. “That doesn’t make sense...Why do we each get individual assignments then?”
Sun chuckled a bit. “So we can learn to work together! Giving us each work that’s this hard helps us learn how to come together and support each other. I’m surprised you haven’t figured that out by now...you’re supposed to be the smartypants.”
Neptune blushed and looked away, but not before Sun saw the embarrassment and hurt in his friend’s expression. He mentally chastised himself for his poor choice of words and draped his tail across Neptune’s shoulders.
“Sorry, Nep...What I meant was that you should let me help you. You want us to team up together someday, right?”
Neptune sagged a bit, looking up at Sun in tired relief. “More than anything…”
Sun smiled brightly, eyes crinkling. “Well then let’s start now! From now on we’re a team. We do our work together and pick each other up whenever it gets to be too much. You’ve already been doing that for me, especially academically. Now will you let me do it for you, you stubborn asshole?”
Neptune looked over all his work strewn across his desk. He’d never asked for help with schoolwork before. He had always prided himself on being one of the smartest students in their class. He had worked hard to be self-sufficient. With anyone else, this would be a massive blow to Neptune’s ego. But this was Sun asking to help him. Sun was his best friend and had already been helping him in other ways for years. Neptune figured it was time to swallow his pride and let Sun help him with school too.
Neptune finally nodded and smiled, voice soft when he answered, “Yeah...we’re a team. Thank you, Sun…”
Sun grinned widely and squeezed Neptune’s shoulders with his tail.
“Hell yeah we are! Have been since day one...but now that it’s official I can force you to come to dinner with me, as a concerned teammate.”
Neptune rolled his eyes and stood up from his desk. “Okay...I should have known you were thinking with your stomach this whole time. Let’s go get dinner before you get cranky.”
Sun feigned indignance but couldn’t completely fight off his smile. “I’ll have you know my stomach is very smart. My stomach would probably be valedictorian if you weren’t already a shoe-in for it.”
Neptune laughed brightly and Sun felt his chest ignite with a happy warmth. He had caused that laugh. He had successfully cheered up his friend and gotten him to ask for help. Neptune! Ask for help! Sun was vaguely amazed with that feat. Sun was proud of that...but mostly he was thrilled that he was the one that Neptune trusted like that.
So maybe Sun had a bit of a problem too. He just wasn’t ready to ask for help with that yet.
Neptune waved a hand in Sun’s face, catching his attention again (as if he ever really lost it).
“So we going to dinner or what? I can actually hear your stomach eating itself.”
Sun put on his smile again and kept his tail firmly wrapped around Neptune’s shoulders.
“We may have to work on your patience as a team too.”
“Hey! I can be patient! I’ve been friends with you this whole time haven’t I?”
Sun just cackled and led his friend out of their dorm and towards the cafeteria, tail remaining a warm touch across Neptune’s shoulder blades.

Fic: Are You Even Listening to Me?
Pairing: Seamonkeys (SunxNeptune)
Word Count: 670
Summary: Sun and Neptune are just a couple of teenagers trying to figure out which academy to go to. Well, Neptune is. Sun's just playing pokemon. (Still just friendship but Sun's getting blushy lol)
Part 1 Part 2
Neptune was sitting at Sun’s desk, shifting through pamphlets, finding one in particular and holding it up.
“What about this one?”
“Uh huh.”
Neptune flipped through the pamphlet.
“Yeah? You like this one? it looks a little...hoity-toity.”
“Uh huh.”
Neptune frowned and looked up.
“Sun are you even listening to me?”
Sun was sprawled out on his bed, head at the foot of the bed and feet propped up on his pillow. He had his DS up in front of his face, tail moving lazily in the air as he pressed buttons.
Neptune groaned and threw the pamphlet down on the desk.
“Why did you ask me to come over here to help you decide which Academy to go toif you aren’t even gonna pretend to pay attention.?”
Sun just shrugged, eyes glued to his DS.
The other boy sighed and rubbed at his face, standing up and coming over to the bed. Neptune flopped down next to his friend, deciding he may as well be comfortable while Sun procrastinates.
“What are you playing anyway?”
Sun finally turned away from his game, smiling brightly at Neptune.
“Pokemon. I’m trying to build up an all monkey team.”
Neptune rolled his eyes and Sun’s selective hearing.
“An all monkey team, huh?”
“Yeah! It’s a lot easier to do in the new games because they added some cool new monkey pokemon.”
Neptune didn’t know much about the game but he tilted his head to look at the screen of Sun’s DS. He smiled a bit when he saw that, in fact, Sun did have a bunch of monkey looking creatures. However, there was one blue thing that was distinctly not monkey shaped. Neptune pointed to it.
“What’s that thing?”
Sun moved the screen away from Neptune but not before he noticed something else.
“Why is it named Neptune? Is there a type of pokemon called Neptune?”
Neptune looked at Suns face and was surprised to find him frowning and blushing.
“Sun?”
“It’s a Gyarados.” Sun’s voice was a gruff mumble. “It’s a really badass water dragon...it made me think of you so I named it Neptune.”
Neptune went quiet for a bit, just watching Sun’s face as he concentrated on his game and th blush faded from his face.
“So you’re still making dragons for me after all these years, huh?”
Neptune smiled pleasantly as the blush returned to his friend’s face. He was always amazed by Sun’s subtle ways of showing his admiration for him. And if naming “a really badass water dragon” after him wasn’t a sign of admiration, Neptune didn’t know what was.
Sun cleared his throat and brought out his usual cocky grin.
“Yeah...I guess I am.”
Neptune smiled wider, reaching out to gently loop Sun’s swaying tail around his fingers. He played with the golden fur gently while Sun played his game. They stayed like that for a while until Neptune spoke up again.
“If I promise to let you teach me how to play pokemon, will you pay attention for a bit while I help you pick out an Academy?”
Sun turned on his side to look right at Neptune, eyes earnest and sparkling with amusement.
“I’m just gonna go to whatever Academy you go to, Nep.”
Neptune swallowed his joyous smile and put on his best serious face.
“Okay...if I promise to let you teach me how to play pokemon will you help me pick out an Academy for us to go to?”
Sun immediately turned off his game and sat up, pulling Neptune up with him with the surprisingly strong tail still clutched in his hand.
“Come on then, Nep. Let’s sort out this Academy thing so I can help you catch a monkey pokemon and name it after me like I know you’re dying to do.”
Sun smirked at his own joke and went over to the desk to collect all the pamphlets. Neptune just watched him with a smile, not even trying to deny what Sun had jokingly said.

Fic: Aren't You Nervous?
More RWBY fic
Pairing: Seamonkeys (SunxNeptune)
Word Count: 727
Summary: Neptune's worried about change. Sun's there to reassure him about what being best friends really means. The second snippet in a series that follows the lives of Sun and Neptune as they grow up together. Can be read as a stand alone fic (but there's continuity between all the fics that makes it ten times cuter haha).
Still only friendship in this one…they're like 11 haha! But there will be more of a romantic relationship later on.
the first part is here
“So we start middle school tomorrow…”
Sun ignored his friend and kept trying to propel himself higher in the air, pumping his little legs harder to bring his swing higher. Neptune was dragging his feet through the sand, barely moving his swing at all.
“Sun.”
“Shh, Nep! I’m trying to focus. This jump is gonna be the biggest one I’ve ever done!”
Neptune sighed and stayed quiet for the moment, watching his friend swing higher and higher. Sometimes it was just easier to cater to Sun’s whims, especially since Neptune was well aware that Sun would never listen to anything while he was so deeply focused on the task at hand. Neptune tried to wait patiently for his friend’s attention.
Eventually sun leapt from his swing at the peak of its arch. He landed in the sand some feet away, stumbled a bit, but righted himself with his tail. He turned and spread his arms, looking at Neptune with an expectant smile. Neptune rolled his eyes but gave his friend the applause he was looking for, clapping his hands half-heartedly.
“Now will you listen to me?”
Sun’s smile didn’t waver as he came back over to the swing set and sat down in the swing next to his friend.
“Sure, Nep.”
Neptune grumbled at the nickname but carried on undeterred. “I said we start middle school tomorrow.”
Sun huffed a bit. “Yeah, I know. So?”
“So? Aren’t you nervous?”
Sun tilted his head and scrunched up his face, tail dragging through the sand lazily.
“Why would I be nervous? It’s just more school...it’ll be boring. And I heard we won’t have recess anymore! How lame is that!”
Neptune blushed a bit, embarrassed that his friend may not share his worries, afraid of seeming foolish.
Neptune mumbled, “Classes are gonna be harder. What if they’re too hard for me? What if I flunk out of school? Then I’d have to go to a different school and we couldn’t be friends anymore! And then-” Neptune was getting increasingly frantic. Sun frowned and pushed himself off of his swing, moving quickly to stand in front of Neptune, grabbing hold of his frien’ds shaking shoulders firmly.
“Nep! Calm down! You’re not gonna flunk out of school...are you crazy? You’re the smartest guy I know, ya big nerd.”
Neptune looked up at Sun’s bright smile and muttered, “...Intellectual.”
Sun laughed and rolled his eyes.
“Exactly. You’ll be fine. And I’ll be fine too as long as you help me with my homework and studying and stuff like that.”
Sun ruffled Neptune’s hair and went back to his own swing. “Besides, even if we did go to different schools we’d still be friends, dummy.”
Neptune looked over at Sun hopefully. “Yeah? You really think so?”
Sun sighed in slight annoyance, tail reaching over to wrap around one of Neptune’s wrists.
“We’re best friends, you nerd.”
“Intellectual.”
“Whatever!”
The two stayed quiet for a while, pushing their swings lazily with their feet, Sun’s tail still wrapped loosely around Neptune’s wrist.
Sun spoke up again, voice uncharacteristically quiet, but still with his usual roughness.
“Best friends means forever, Nep. So stop worrying. Middle school isn’t going to change anything about us.”
Neptune smiled fondly at Sun’s rare bout of serious conversation, touched that his friend was trying so hard to encourage him.
“So you’ll still sit with me at lunch then?” Sun laughed and briefly released Neptune’s wrist from his tail so he could flick his friend on the back of his head with the tip of it, immediately returning the comforting press of his tail to his friend’s arm.
“Oh my god, Nep, yes. Now come on. It’s almost dinner time. My mom said she talked to your mom and you can stay over until 8.”
Sun stood and tugged at his friend’s arm with his tail, sliding his tail down to twine with Neptune’s fingers as he lead them out of the park and towards home.
The anxious butterflies that had been flying around Neptune’s stomach for the past few weeks were finally settled and he smiled freely. Finding comfort in Sun’s words and touch, Neptune was done worrying about change for the time being. He had his best friend tugging him along with a soft tail wrapped around his hand. Sun had said forever and Neptune knew he meant it.

Fic: Whatcha Makin'?
RWBY has inspired me to write again :)
Pairing: Seamonkeys (SunxNeptune)
Word Count: 940
Summary: I've been writing little bits of Sun and Neptune's life, from friendship on. This fic is Sun and Neptune's first day of preschool and their first day of being best friends.
Part of a kind of series…although each part can be read as a stand alone. Right now the pairing is just friendship, eventually it will turn romantic.
Sun wasn’t too sure about preschool. His mama had kept him pretty sheltered up until this point in his life.
She’d always said, “Sun, your tail is very special. It makes you stand out. But some mean people won’t like that and they will not be nice to you. I just want to keep you safe.”
And he had been safe. But when all the other neighborhood kids had grown up a bit and started to go off to school, his mama started to worry he wasn’t socializing as much as a little boy should.
So that brought Sun here, outside the door to his preschool classroom, hand holding tight to his mama’s hand, tail wrapped firmly around her leg, remembering all the times he was told that others might say mean things about his tail.
“Sun, you’ve got to let go. I’ve already talked to your teacher. She’s a very nice lady so you’ll be safe here with her. She told me all about the fun things you’ll do today. And there’s lots of little kids your own age for you to make friends with.”
Sun looked up at his mama, a little unsure still but his tail loosened slightly.
“I’ll make friends?”
She smiled at him softly. “Of course. You’ll be really good at making friends, Sun. Just remember what I told you. Introduce yourself and ask the other kids to play with you nicely.”
Sun thought about that for a moment before asking his other burning question.
“There will be recess, right? You promise?”
Sun’s mama laughed brightly and ruffled his hair gently.
“I promise there will be recess.”
With that last promise, Sun felt his confidence grow. He beamed at his mama and then turned and ran into his classroom, shouting goodbye to her over his shoulder.
His mama watched him from the doorway for a moment longer, just to make sure he settled in alright. She watched the teacher show Sun to his cubby, leaving with a smile after Sun unceremoniously shoved all his stuff into his designated cubby.
After Sun had stored his backpack, he looked around the room eagerly. The teacher had told his he could go play until circle time. Sun was excited to play with all the new things he saw around the classroom, but he was also nervous of the other kids. Until today the only kid he had ever played with was his cousin and she was a few years older than him.
Sun furrowed his brows and puffed out his chest. His mama had said he’d be good at making friends. He didn’t want to let her down.
He marched over to the area with the playdough and ploped down next to a boy with bright blue hair.
Sun watched the boy for a brief moment before attempting to make his first friend. “Whatcha makin’?”
The boy didn’t look up from his pile of playdough. He seemed quite focused.
He answered in a quiet voice, “Makin’ a castle…”
Sun immediately grabbed some red playdough, his favorite color, and said, “Can I make a dragon to guard your castle.” He was proud of himself for sounding so polite.
The other boy looked up and scrunched up his nose in thought.
“What kind of dragon?”
Sun giggled brightly. “A two headed one that breathes fire out of one mouth and ice out of the other!”
The blue haired boy’s eyes went wide. “That sounds scary..” His voice was a little timid and Sun instantly felt the need to reassure his potential new friend.
So he grinned and said, “Don’t worry! The dragon is only mean to bad guys.”
The other boy seemed highly relieved at that information.
The two remained quiet for a while, little tongues sticking out in concentration as they worked. Eventually the timid voice broke the silence.
“I like your tail.”
Sun looked up from the dragon’s second head, meeting the blue haired boy’s admiring gaze, trying not to show his surprise.
“Thanks...my mama said that people might not like it…”
“Why? It’s really awesome.”
Sun felt himself blush, he scrubbed at his cheeks in annoyance, tail twitching. “...I like your hair.”
The other boy perked up, finally sounding less timid. “Thanks! My mom told me I could pick my haircut for the first day of school.”
Sun was amazed. “Your mom is awesome!”
The other boy giggled and tried to wipe the playdough off his hand before sticking it out to Sun.
“My name is Neptune. Do you wanna be my friend?”
Sun looked down at the boy’s hand curiously, feeling a small well of pleasure bubble up in his chest at making his first friend. He wrapped his tail around the offered hand, shaking it happily.
“I’m, Sun! We can be best friends! Since I’ve got a cool tail and you’ve got cool hair we should be best friends.”
Neptune nodded solemnly as if that was the most logical thing he had ever heard. He looked down at the tail around his hand and got a little shy. He’d never had a best friend before so he wasn’t sure what to expect.
“S-so...you’ll sit with me at snack time? And play with me during recess?”
The tail tightened around his hand.
“Well duh! That’s what best friends do!”
Neptune smiled and let his fingers thread through Sun’s soft tail hair. “Okay. Then we’re best friends.”
Sun nodded and went back to making his dragon now that the best friend thing was settled. Happy that his mama had been right about this friend making business. He left his tail in Neptune’s warm, little hand.
