I’m a crazy person and its been bugging me that there’s no definite time stamp that I can agree with, so I’ve been researching and I think I figured out what year the BatB remake takes place. Now, Bill Condon has said the film takes place in 1740. That would put the film during the Rococo/Late Baroque-era, which is roughly 1680 to 1750 (since the Neoclassicsm style took over around 1760). 1740, okay, fine, cool. Just one problem: Belle’s mother.
From 1347 to 1665, the Black Death was responsible for about 25 million deaths in Europe. Is it possible she died from a later strain? Of course, but the primary strain that was killing people all over Europe was during this period. Now there was an outbreak of plague in France in 1720 but that was in Marseille, which is not even close to Paris and Belle clearly says she is from Paris (“This is the Paris of my childhood…”) and Beast talks about going to see Notre Dame, which is in Paris. “But maybe the plague got to Paris from Marseille!” No, it didn’t. The Act of the Parlement of Aix was initiated in an attempt to stop the plague’s spread. The Act levied the death penalty for any communication between Marseille and the rest of Provence. This was not Europe’s first fight with the plague (been there since 1347, remember?) so, by now, they have a system of sorts to try and contain it so it does as little damage as possible and it actually sort of works because the death tolls during the second plague epidemic are significantly lower than that big 25 million. A plague wall, the Mur de la Peste, was also erected across the countryside to enforce the separation. “But did this strain spread beyond Marseille?” Yes, but I can’t find any record of it getting even halfway to Paris let alone actually reaching Paris so, no, Belle’s mom didn’t die in the Great Plague of Marseille.
There was one last epidemic in Paris that I could find record of, which occurred in 1668. It was actually in these later years that, after a few major epidemics, the plague slowly started to disappear from Western Europe. The last recorded death of the plague during this time was in London in 1679. So let’s assume Belle’s mother died near the end of the plague’s run in that 1668 outbreak. Emma is 26 so I’m gonna go with Belle being the same age just for the sake of what little sanity I have left being easy: 1668 + 26 = 1694, which is perfectly within the Late Baroque timeline. But I wasn’t satisfied with just that, I needed more info to be sure so I turned to the only other person who could help me: Gaston.
Yes, that’s right! Captain Gaston! “Ever since the war,” he said to LeFou. “But which war?” Well, I’m glad you asked, readers. Because I clearly have too much time on my hands, I researched that as well and complied a list of wars France was involved in during the Late Baroque time period:
War of the Reunions: 1683-84
Nine Years’ War: 1688-97
War of the Spanish Succession: 1701-13
Rákóczi’s War of Independence: 1703-11
The Jacobite Rising of 1715: 1715-16
War of the Quadruple Alliance: 1718-20
War of the Polish Succession: 1733-38
War of the Austrian Succession: 1740-48
The Jacobite Rising of 1745: 1745-46
The Seven Years War: 1756-63
That’s a lot of wars. Luckily, we already did some math to help narrow this list way down. Based on the last record of the plague epidemic in Paris (1668), plus Emma/Belle’s age added to that (1694), that means the war Gaston participated in was either the War of the Reunions or the Nine Years’ War. I would say the it was very likely the War of the Reunions. From the way Gaston spoke, I got the feeling that the war he’d been in had been over for some time, and France was involved in the Nine Years’ War all the way to the end, which would put us past that 1694 guess-timation.
