This was short, but I poured a lot of emotions into it, so hopefully that makes up for the lack of events <3

TRAGEDY often strikes when you expect it the least. The instant the ends of Nene’s long, ombre hair disappeared from your view, you knew. You knew that this would be the last time you would ever see her smile that brilliant smile of hers and hear her twinkling laughter.

Today was the best day of your life. After God knows how long of hesitation and butterflies, you finally confessed to your long time crush and best friend, Nene. Surprisingly, she returned your feelings!

You two had always been entangled by the strings of fate, as if destined to meet on that day, at that time, in the third floor girl’s bathroom at Kamome Academy to wish for something otherwise unattainable.

Oh, the fun times you had together with Nene, the younger Minamoto brother Kou, and the scummy-but-kind Hanako-kun. Memories of excitement, happiness, heart-wrenching sadness, pain, and anger swirled together to create a sort of unattractive murky brown that somehow still managed to look beautiful to you.

Of course, you knew about Nene’s inevitable death. However, it had always been nothing but storm clouds floating on the horizon, far away and illusory.

It’s near the end of the school year now, and part of you had begun to hope that the context in Yashiro Nene’s book was just empty words. Yet, as you stared at the place where Nene stood seconds ago, the joy that previously overwhelmed you was overshadowed by the sinking sensation in your stomach.

You tried to tell yourself it was merely paranoia, but your feet moved nevertheless, chasing after those bright ruby eyes.

It happened too fast for you to completely comprehend what had happened.

You watched in slow motion as Nene clutched at the necklace you had given her, refusing to let the man take it. He shifted his arm, a glint of something catching your eyes.

“Nene, watch out!” You screamed, shooting forward as fast as you could. Too slow, too sluggish. Her watery ruby eyes glowed as they connected with yours. Emotions raced by, until realization glossed over those bright ruby eyes.

Blood seeped onto your uniform, but you didn’t care. “Nene, you’re going to be okay,” you chanted, clutching at her limp hand, “everything will be fine.” Memories flew by, time slowing to a stop.

Painting at sunset, ruby red hues splashed across blue on the distant horizon, red paint spilling onto the pristine canvas.

Crisp white shirt. White canvas that’s too white. Bleached. Half-lidded crimson orbs. Magenta swirls in the sky at sunset. Red marching across the pavement, slowly forming a puddle. Blood-red paint flowing slowly across the canvas, staining it permanently.

“N-no. Please—” Your voice sounded underwater, contorted. “Nene—” Her eyes opened, red gleaming dully. “It’s okay,” the whisper of her voice echoed around you. “It was bound to happen, in the end, I couldn’t run from fate.” She laughed bitterly, coughing hollowly when it was too much for her depleting body.

“Shhhh, it’s all going to be alright, Nene. An ambulance is coming, just hang on.” Desperately, you held out your shaking hand, pinky out. “Promise me, Nene. Promise me you’ll be alright.” She gave your hand a weak squeeze, ignoring your request. “Whatever happens,” a trail of blood seeped past her parted lips, “be brave for me.”

Tears blurred your vision, dropping onto Nene’s already paling face. “No! You’re going to be okay,” you chanted that as if it was a spell, clutching her limp hand to your chest.

“Please be okay.”

But you knew, just as you did when she disappeared behind that gate, that she would disappear from your life, just as the storybook wrote.
