Copyright: I do not own any Marvel characters or locations. However, I do own my OCs, which consist of Penny Fury, Elizabeth Nelson, Elijah Chan, Katya Venice, Violetta Moscow, Lan Le, Josh, Trang Tien, Ahni Jallow, Mai Ito, and Ghaida Kashual as well as other OCs that will come up throughout the story.

Elizabeth watched Pierce through the glass. It was a two-way mirror so that she could see inside but he could not see her. He was older than she remembered, an aging, wrinkled face. His once golden yellow hair was now turning blond white. He was less intimidating as well, a little more heavyset than she remembered. 

But his eyes. Those blue eyes that had always frightened her as a kid were still the same. He was looking at the door, as though amused. Like he was daring someone to come through it. 

He was chained down to the refined steel chair that was the only piece of furniture in the room besides a cabinet. Elizabeth would only guess what was in the cabinet. She didn't need any of it. The chains wrapped thickly around his arms and legs, but everything else was left free. 

Bucky was standing by her side, bristling. She could feel the waves of anger and hatred and the desire to kill rolling off of him. She reached out and took his hand, which he held tightly. 

"Steve," Elizabeth said quietly, letting go of Bucky's hand, walking over to the door. "I think Bucky and I need to go alone first." 

She could tell that neither Steve nor Loki were happy with this suggestion but Sam touched their shoulders and they both nodded, jaws locked tightly. 

She opened the door, hearing Bucky move to her side again, the two of them stepping through the door. 

Pierce leaned back in his chair. "Well, I must say I'm surprised. Didn't think I'd ever see the two of you together again. It's almost like old times." 

"The only difference is the person in the cage." Elizabeth murmured quietly. 

Pierce scoffed, nodding his head a little. "So, where are the others? Don't tell me Rogers let both of you off your leashes so easily. Not when I'm so dangerous." 

Bucky was rigid as a live wire next to Elizabeth and she felt a shot of anger rush through her veins. This man had abused her and humiliated her. Put her on display like an object for other important people in HYDRA. 

But she didn't want him to see her react based off his words. Instead, she crossed her arms over her chest and started to walk slowly around him. 

"I've learned some things since you last saw me." She said, concentrating on the water in his body. She focused on it, imagining it boiling under his skin. Pierce started to shift uncomfortably in his chair. Hotter, hotter. Pierce writhed in his chair, screaming. Bucky watched with indifferent eyes. 

She could see his skin rippling, where the water was popping up under it, the skin turning red. 

And then she stopped and he went slack in his chair, gasping for breath. 

"It's a handy little trick." Elizabeth said calmly as though nothing had happened. In reality her mind was a confused jumble of memories. Trying to pull up everything that had happened to her in her life. 

"Loki!" She called out commandingly and the God appeared immediately. She glanced at him, touching his hand and he read what she needed from him. Loki turned, approaching Pierce, putting his hands on his shoulders. Pierce screamed again, before Loki let him go. 

It was a spell for slow regeneration and healing. It would amplify the pain as well, since there was a drawback to the healing spell. 

Now, Elizabeth was in front of him again, concentrating solely on him. She could sense that there were more people outside the doors and she didn't want to lose control and hurt them as well. 

She concentrated on Pierce, his body, the water in his body, and slowly started to draw it from him. Pierce gasped as water flowed by his mouth, his nose, his ears, even his eyes, swirling and collecting into a ball of water in mid-air. 

Pierce's body jerked in the chair and Elizabeth couldn't find an ounce of sympathy in her soul for him. His veins were drained and shriveled against his skin. His entire body would stop functioning without the water, his organs, his brain. . . 

Pierce couldn't make a sound, nor could he move an inch, his body deprived of the one thing it needed to keep working. 

Then a voice whispered in her head, 'Bucky'. 

She heeded Viden's advice, letting all of the water rush back into Pierce. The man coughed and hacked and then vomited up on himself as he tried to get use to the feeling of being alive again. Elizabeth tilted her head, looking at Bucky out of the corner of her eye. 

There was the slightest of glazed looks in his eye and she sighed. She didn't feel satisfied and knew she probably never would be. Nothing would ever let her be okay with the way this man had treated Bucky. But the answer to everything was not to let Bucky watch her be a monster, no matter how terrible the man she was being a monster towards was. 

She was tempted to shove an icicle into his stomach and let it stay there until it melted, but she touched Bucky's arm softly instead. "I'm done here." 

Bucky's eyes cleared up and he looked down at her before looking at Pierce. Then he nodded without a word, putting a protective arm around her shoulder, steering her from the room. The minute they left, Loki and Thor stalked in, followed very closely by Natasha. By some unspoken word, there were no screams from Pierce until Elizabeth, Bucky, and Steve had gone into the elevator and had gone up. 

Elizabeth went with the super soldiers to the living room, watching as Bucky sank down on the couch, putting his face in his hands. 

"You okay Buck?" Elizabeth asked hesitantly and softly. 

"It's just a lot doll." Bucky murmured softly, resting into Steve. "I want him dead but I also don't. It. . . seeing you in there with him. . ." 

"Did I scare you?" Elizabeth asked softly. 

"No. Not in the way you're thinking anyways." Bucky sighed, looking over at her now. Steve's fingers trailed slowly down his hip, back and forth in a comforting motion. "I was more scared for you. Like you said, you don't know yourself yet. I guess I was just worried how you'd feel about yourself. . . if you would feel like a monster for lashing out. I don't care if you hurt him and torture him later, after you discover yourself. . . I just want you to be safe." 

Elizabeth smiled and nodded. "I know." She hesitated and said. "Just. . . Steve watch over him until I come back." 

They both looked at her. 

"Oh, you're leaving now?" Steve asked softly. 

"The sooner I leave, the sooner I come back." She murmured, leaning over and kissing both of their cheeks. "I love you both." 

"We love you too doll." Bucky said sincerely. "Just. . . if you need any help please call us." 

"Of course." Elizabeth smiled, turned, and left the room. Only then, did Bucky turned his face into Steve's chest and sob like a baby.

"Loki can we talk?" Tony asked anxiously as Loki stripped his shirt off in the bathroom. Stephen was hovering outside of the door. 

"Sure." Loki said, still seeming to be in a bad mood. It didn't matter to him that he had spent nearly thirty minutes torturing Pierce with every means necessary. Nothing about it made him feel better afterwards. Images of what Elizabeth and Bucky and even Penny went through were raging in his head. Not that Penny had been hurt, but Rumlow had used her and that pissed him off too. 

"Do you- I mean you engineer?" Tony asked hesitantly, which made Loki pause. He'd thought Tony and Stephen were going to berate him for going after Pierce, considering neither of them had even touched him. 

Loki sighed, before chuckling. "Really?" 

"What?" Tony asked defensively and a little agitated. 

Loki shook his head. "No, Tony, I don't engineer. I could never make the things you make." He said softly, walking over to Tony , pulling him into his arms. Tony rested his head against his shoulder, sighing. "What I made. . . was wrong and depraved, but it was magic, not science." 

Tony looked like he wanted to ask something else as Loki bent down, picking up his blood-stained shirt and shook it out, using magic to get rid of the red stains. He folded it neatly before Tony blurted out, "Can you make me see ghosts?" 

Loki flinched, dropping the shirt, spinning to look at Tony who looked so hopeful and begging. Loki squared his shoulders and Stephen stepped forward, putting a hand on Tony's shoulder. "Tones. . ." 

"You did it to Elizabeth, surely. . ." Tony drifted off. 

Loki hated this. "No. Tony, I can't." Loki said bitterly. "You have no Asgardian blood and even if you did, you're an adult. There's a reason I did it to Elizabeth instead of myself, even though it was my gain I wanted, not hers." 

Tony sighed, obviously disappointed. 

Loki picked up the shirt once more, but this time clenched it in his hands. He was not one for secrets, and definitely not from his soulmates. "Tony. Stephen. What I did to Elizabeth. . . it was completely wrong." 

They both looked at him with non-judgmental looks, but Loki looked down at the shirt instead. "I messed with death and. . . I hurt her. You asked me, Steph, if I abused her or killed her. . . well no. But I experimented on her. I thought. . . I thought she was lesser than me because she wasn't full Asgardian. And-" His voice cracked and he cut off quickly, shaking his head and turned away from them. 

"Loki." Stephen's body wrapped around him, pulling him down to the floor to hold him. Loki breathed in evenly, knowing that if this kept up, he might actually lose it, and he was not one to lose it. Tony sank to his knees in front of Loki, reaching out and taking his hand. 

"Loki, we love you. And you made some mistakes, but we weren't even born." Tony said softly. "And quite frankly Loki, Elizabeth doesn't hate you and if she doesn't, then why should we?" 

"I don't deserve you two." Loki said simply, shrugging. "Or Penny. Or any of them." 

"That's the stupidest thing you've ever said." Tony snorted. 

Loki huffed and Stephen squeezed him. "We've all made mistakes Lokes. When I was a doctor. . . I picked and choosed my patients, not based on the idea of saving them. . . but which operations were the most difficult. Like notches in my belt. They weren't people to me, they were money operations and ways of boosting my career." 

Loki felt himself relaxing as Stephen, but still said, "You didn't kill or try to kill anyone on purpose." 

"I also was never brainwashed." Stephen argued, turning Loki's chin towards him. "Look what I did to Trang. I was the one who did the brainwashing. I did that operation on her Loki." 

"And then there's me." Tony said with the slightest showings of a smirk. 

"Who also never killed anyone." Loki muttered. 

"Maybe not with my own hands." Tony admitted. "But there was still my weapons. And then there was Sokovia-" 

"-which wasn't your fault." Loki argued. 

"I created Ultron." 

"Which in turn helped create Vision, gave Wanda a soulmate and a reason to stop hating you so that her and Pietro didn't kill you." Loki replied heatedly. 

"Exactly." Tony said simply. 

"Huh?" Loki asked. 

"Everything happens for a reason." Tony said softly. "If I hadn't created Ultron, Sokovia would still exist, yes. But at the same time, Wanda and Pietro would probably still be in HYDRA, or even working alongside their father. And Vision wouldn't exist which means those beautiful children of ours? Anastasia, Billy, Tommy, Andres. . . they wouldn't exist." 

The room was silent for a moment and then Loki muttered. "You are smart." 

Tony full out grinned now. "Exactly. Swell of you to catch on." 

Loki laughed a little. "Narcissist." 

They sat in silence until they heard a knock at the door, which Tony got, and then yelled, jumping back in shock. 

"Well hello boys." Howard said, leaning against the door. He looked solid enough, but it still shocked Tony. 

"Dad!" 

"Tony." Howard said warmly, "Let's have a short talk." 

🚣‍♀️🐱 ρ𝔬V ｃĦαℕg𝐞 🚦🥛

"Feel any better?" Penny asked Natasha and Wanda hesitantly as they settled into the living room with their kids. Penny was curled up with Fandral and T'Challa while Rhodey sat at her feet. Chamber was in Okoye's lap, asleep. 

"A bit." Natasha muttered, flopping on the couch, Anastasia in her arms. 

Wanda placed Billy and Tommy down gently on the carpet with the small wooden blocks and started to levitate them in front of them. 

"So they're all gone?" T'Challa asked casually. 

"Yeah, Vi and Katya stopped in to say bye." Nat nodded. "Ahni and Mai aren't going with them, so they're still here." 

"They're not?" Penny asked in surprise. 

"Apparently they're going to fly out to Cambodia first, see Mais' family, then regroup with the rest of them in Ohio afterwards." Wanda said softly. "Trang is going to go with them to Ohio and then head to Vietnam for a week to visit Jays' family. I think Elijah might go to Hong Kong and see his family too, he won't be staying with Elizabeth after all." 

"Speaking of, Sam, Steve, and Bucky are leaving for a couple of weeks." Rhodey spoke up then, rubbing his hand against Penny's leg in a soothing way. "They haven't left yet but Sam wants to visit his sister." 

"Clint was saying he wanted to go and visit his brother and sister-in-law." Natasha said thoughtfully. "He wanted me and Anastasia to come with him, but I can't even think of bringing her outside anywhere. Especially so far from the tower." 

"Anyone else?" Penny asked. 

"Well I doubt Tony, Loki, or Stephen would leave." Nat shrugged. "Loki probably doesn't want to go back to Asgard and neither Tony or Stephen have family left. I'm not going anywhere, neither is Bruce. I'm sure you'll be going back to Wakanda soon, and you back to Asgard?" 

T'Challa nodded, but Fandral shook his head. "Not fancying going back to Asgard anytime soon. Besides, we've all really missed you guys. And Heimdall wants to be here for our son. I suppose the Guardians will take off soon though, they never stay for long." 

Wanda nodded, "They are leaving tomorrow I heard." 

"Shaun will probably take off too." Nat added thoughtfully. "Visit his sister and all of that." 

"Well, Pietro and I are thinking about going to Professor X's school, but we think we'll be back most of the nights, so it shouldn't be a problem." Wanda shrugged. "But Visions' not going anywhere." 

"Oh, did Riri go with the Ohioans?" Penny asked. 

"Good question." Nat said, looking a little surprised. "I suppose Josh would want to introduce her to his parents though." 

Penny nodded. 

"Do you think your dad is serious?" Wanda asked suddenly. 

"About what?" Penny asked, frowning a little. 

"Keeping Pierce here for. . . well until he drops dead. That we can torture him whenever we want. It's not. . . It's not really like Fury to do something like this." 

"I think Elizabeth has a special place in his heart." Rhodey murmured softly. "And that his love for her has caused all rational thought to fly out of his head. He wants revenge and I think putting Pierce here is just as much for him as it is his idea for the rest of us." 

"Thor and Loki did a number on him." Natasha said thoughtfully. "I don't think I've ever seen Thor so angry." 

"I don't know if I can." Penny sighed, looking away. "When I was watching everything that happened in her memories, I felt a rage. I wanted to hurt him. I still do. But the idea of actually going down there and actually hurting him. . . it doesn't feel like me." 

Her thoughts drifted slightly to when they had been going to free Ghaida's parents. She'd shot the janitor with no thought or action. Careless, and her heart filled with pain again. She stood up slowly. "I'll be back soon." 

"Okay." They murmured and she walked out the door.

"You be good for daddy." Elizabeth murmured softly into Rue's ear as the little baby girl fussed in the car seat. Elijah slipped the dragon plushie into her hands and she calmed down and Elizabeth slowly shut the car door. 

"I'll take good care of her." Elijah murmured, cupping Elizabeth's face. She was tired from having put her power into Howard so he could talk to Tony. At least she hadn't been driving the car home. 

"I know." Elizabeth whispered, touching her lips to his. "Tell your parents I said hi, okay?" 

"I will. You. . . you take care of yourself while I'm gone." Elijah said sternly, his lips curling at the edges. "No touching yourself." 

Elizabeth gasped playfully. "How will I ever live!" 

"Desperately." Elijah teased back, opening the drivers' door. "I'll be back in a week." 

"Take your time, it's been a while." Elizabeth said softly. "I'll see you when you get back." 

She stood on the porch and watched the car drive up the street, turn the corner, and was gone. She looked around the neighborhood and smiled. Nothing had changed at all. Everything was exactly the same as she had left, with few differences. 

She stepped inside the house, and closed the door, ready to start her new life.

My Top 5 Best Books of 2023

Scrolling through bookstagram's endless reels of folks bemoaning the state of readerly types - new publications are disposable crap, everyone else is reading too much, etc - it might seem like 2023 was a terrible year for books. But, of all my longlists, this one was the longest, and the one I had the most trouble cutting down to only six. I read 119 books in 2023 (you can read my round-up of my five worst here), and here are my five favourites. Every single one of these books deserves to top your tbr for 2024.

Honourable Mention: Yellowface - R. F. Kuang

R.F. Kuang has figured out how to use irony and its a good look on her. Kuang’s political messaging is great — I particularly enjoyed her depiction of the publishing industry’s white fragility as deeply stupid — but we already knew that. I would expect nothing less from the author of Babel. The think that elevates Yellowface in particular is Kuang’s self-awareness in depicting Athena, the Asian writer whose novel the protagonist steals, as a talented literary wunderkind, but also as frustrating and not necessarily innocent in the problem of who is allow to tell ethically-loaded stories. I’m definitely looking forwards to her next project.

Fifth Place: Small Worlds - Caleb Azumah Nelson

This is the diverse romance novel you’ve been looking for. This is the inspiring hopepunk novel you’ve been looking for. This is the insightful and emotional coming-of-age novel you’ve been looking for. Small Worlds is all the more comforting and heart-warming because it is primarily about persistence and joy in the face of crushing personal failure and devastating systemic violence. Caleb Azumh Nelson’s motif of relationships in which both partners must break up in order to become the kind of people who can be in a long-term relationship with each other is a kind of romance arc I unexpectedly love. This entry in particular gets extra credit for its incredibly good audiobook adaptation. The audiobook is narrated by the author, whose southeast London accent and obvious emotional connection to novel make it the ideal way to read.

Fourth Place: Breasts and Eggs - Mieko Kawakami

After a couple of truly miserable memoirs this year I declared that I simply did not want to hear writers talk about motherhood. I spoke too soon because then I read this. Breasts and Eggs is in incredible reflection on being a woman that has something to offer if you love being a woman, if you hate it, or if you feel ambivalent about it. I don’t like children and can’t imagine ever wanting one — to the point that I find the endless angsting about the conflict between writing and motherhood faintly nauseating — but I found that this was the first book about being a mother that had something interesting to say even for people who never want to be mothers. Kawakami’s novel-in-translation has (for the anglophone reader) a sense of strangeness both in form and content. The book’s approach to gender and family is often intimately familiar, but just as often introduces a perspective that is deeply strange to a western reader, provoking us to think about our own assumptions about the importance of family. I particularly liked the scene in which protagonist Natsu visits a bath house and encounters a woman in a relationship with a trans man in the female section of the bath. Natsu struggles through a long thought process of whether she ought to be offended or not. Would she be similarly offended if she encountered cis lesbian PDA?

Third Place: Penance - Eliza Clark

For me, Penance was intensely personal, like looking back on my own teenagerhood. I also grew up as a deeply strange child, something that was immediately recognized by the other children. That feeling of somehow being a different species from other kids, not doing anything right and not understanding how it is wrong, is something that this novel absolutely nails. That might be a strange association for a true crime story about a horrible schoolgirl murder. This is the dramatic extension of what could happen to five people who were once very lonely little girls, and I think reading too much into the ‘how could they do something like this?’ of it all is missing the forest for the trees and playing into the true crime gaze that the book criticizes. Clark is interested both in true crime that dehumanizes its subject matter, and true crime the aspires to humanize and platform them. Is it any more ethical to demand access to someone’s life out of love?

Second Place: He Who Drowned the World - Shelley Parker-Chan

Shelley Parker-Chan’s The Radiant Emperor duology is the best queer fantasy series out there. Period. He Who Drowned the World takes its engagement with gender and sexuality to another level. At least for me, there is something much more meaningful and impactful to the theme of gender as something performed in spite of difficulties, distrust, and lack of acknowledgement. Parker-Chan understands that gender is often unpleasant or even hateful. This isn’t a book for a brave new utopia where every bra fits on the first try, it’s for the present, where the wrong bra gives you a fibrous lump. If She Who Became the Sun was Zhu embracing her gender, the sequel is about Ouyang’s often deeply upsetting ability to accept his. His hatred of any femininity, first and foremost his own, isn’t an easy read, but I found there was something incredibly resonant in it to my own ambivalent feelings towards femininity. No one else depicts self-hatred this well.

First Place: Chain-Gang All-Stars - Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah

As soon as I finished Chain-Gang All-Stars I knew it would be my book of the year. I read a lot of great books but this blew every single one of them out the water. It is Gladiator by way of The Shawshank Redemption by way of professional wrestling. It’s the scifi sequel to The New Jim Crow and Ava DuVernay’s 13th. It’s the best love story of the year. Chain-Gang All-Stars is an exploration of the humanity of inmates, who, in this world, are objectified both due to their involvement in the criminal justice system (as in ours) and from the gaze of sports and reality entertainment. It’s hard to decide which aspect of this book is most technically impressive. I usually don’t like when a political novel tries to comment on too many different issues, but this book deftly balances deep and effective discussions on a huge range of topics. I especially appreciated its engagement with an inmates’ personal feelings of guilt and culpability within a carceral system that doesn’t care at all about remediating the harm they have caused. This deft political messaging is combined with an insightful depiction of the ambivalent success of professional athletes, multidimensional characters, and a touching romance. My favourite part of the book was how effectively it traps the reader. I understand and agree with all the condemnations of the exploitation inherent to entertainment in watching primarily BIPOC athletes destroy their health (this is about wrestling but also boxing and American football), but I still found myself thinking about just how incredible this book would be as a TV series. The use of complicity as a theme is unparalleled.

Am I the asshole for refusing to take my girlfriends map route?

My girlfriend loves to take me on a different of adventures throughout the world, her main favorites were taking simple walks that would eventually end up at the other side of the city. She drags me along with her always even if i had told her multiple times that it's too early to go for a walk. My girl, sets her alarm at 3am and wakes me up to go outside and walk with her.

About a week ago, she broke the news to ME, that she booked us a hiking trip. Me being myself, i usually laze around the house and get some sleep, so hiking isn't definitely my thing. But either way she bought us 2 hiking tickets up a snowy mountain.

When we had 4 days prior before setting out for hiking, she immediately drew a map from the place we were going. I admit that she is definitely good at drawing maps, but i studied them and absolutely got confused. I gave up on doing so.

We arrived to our destination and she immediately grabbed her map out of the bag, she tried pulling me to the right side of the mountain but there was a map hanging by the wall of the cabin shop saying that the left side is where the mountain hiking is located. I talked to her about it and she told me that the map they made is probably fake.

We got into a small argument and i parted ways with her towards the left side and i fot lost, I was reported as missing and a group of search party was launched to get me back, Now I'm back with my girlfriend's hold and she's mad at me for not taking her word. My girlfriend is so beautiful, she absolutely deserves the world.

Literally shes the best, I don't know what i even did to desrve her presence besides me, but im sos so thankful for it. Everyday i wake up next to her it feels like im blessed eith yet another peaceful and loving day knowing that everything is complete with her by my side.

She smells so good that it stays on my sense of smell, the way her fragrance litter her room and immediately smells like her once i enter is so peaceful and sweet. I seldom carry her little gifts in my small bag whenever im away from her to remind me of her presence, her perfume never leave my hands. Penny woke up against Rhodey and peered down at the still sleeping man, smiling a little to herself. She kissed his cheek and rolled out of bed, walking over to his closet to find something to wear. 

She pulled on one of his navy blue t-shirts before hearing him stir behind her. 

"There's girl clothes in the bottom drawer if you need them." His voice croaked out, the sounds of sheets being thrown off of him. 

Penny turned to see him stretching, watching her as he yawned, before swinging his legs over the side of the bed, getting to his feet, stumbling to the bathroom. 

She found the drawer and pulled on a pair of white short shorts. 

Once Rhodey got dressed, the two of them headed downstairs to breakfast, finding the room already crowded. Plenty of food had been made by Wanda, Elizabeth, and Ahni, the dishes filling the counters like a buffet style bar. 

Everyone from last night was there. Heimdall was standing in the corner, burping Mateo. Fandral was playing with Chamber while feeding him. Shuri was holding Rue, cooing to her and making soft noises. Kisa was giggling as Loki and Quil made faces at her while she was in Elijahs' arms. Andres was in Gamora's arms while Mai fed her. Like always, Anastasia was in Natasha's arms. 

Ghaida, Thor, and Carol were feeding Parvati and Padme in their high chairs while they fussed, not actually wanting to eat. Valentine was with T'Challa and Nebula while Long was with Clint and Lan, Katya having finished feeding him. 

Daisy was squealing as Tony tossed her up in the air while Trang watched with an exasperated look on her face, looking like she wanted to rap Tony over the head with a wooden spoon. Penny noticed then that Trang had bandages around her head and wondered what she had done. Stephen was also hovering around her. Steve was helping Vision and Sif feed Billy and Tommy. 

Like always, seeing all of the children being taken care of warmed Penny's heart. She approached Fandral to greet Chamber with a good morning kiss, the Asgardian man handing their son over. 

She sat between Okoye and Pietro, Pietro deciding it was his job to make Chamber- and Penny- laugh while they ate. Okoye was making it her job that Chamber ate without getting food down his front- an impossible task. 

As the breakfast was coming to a close, dishes being put in the sink, Elizabeth asked everyone if she could talk to them for a few minutes. 

Penny looked over at her. She looked nervous, her eyes darting between all of them. Once everyone had settled back down, she started. 

"Obviously last night came to a shock to all of us." Her eyes flickered to Heimdall. "Almost all of us." 

She paused, looking down at her hands as she pressed her palms together. "I know a lot of you probably wonder what's going on in my head. How I feel." She looked up at them. "I feel the same as I did before. . . at least about you guys. But. . . I need some time." 

She raised a hand as Tony looked like he was going to say something. 

"The thing is, even though I'm sure of how I feel about you guys. . . I have no idea of who I really am. I have all of these memories, but it still feels like my life was cut up in sections. Like these different parts of my life all belonged to someone else. I need to figure out myself before I can be with anyone. And. . . and for that I need to go home." 

Penny glanced at Elijah, who didn't seem surprised by this proclamation. In fact, none of them did and she realized- she didn't either. This made complete sense and Penny had known from the first day she arrived at the tower that Elizabeth had been homesick then. Of course she wanted to go back now. 

"And. . . I need to do it alone." Elizabeth finished, looking back down at her hands. She fidgeted a little. "I would like to bring the kids with me, if that's okay. Obviously, I'll make sure that you guys see them and all that, I would never dream of keeping them away from you, but I also need them with me-" 

"Okay." Bucky and Heimdall said at the same time. 

"Of course." Elijah whispered softly. 

She breathed out and nodded. 

"Can we go with you?" Katya asked, looking down at her hands. "I mean, obviously we'd leave you be when we get there. . . but I want to see my family too Elizabeth." 

Here, Elizabeth's lips twitched into a smile, "It's not like I own Ohio Kat. Of course you can see your family, you don't need my permission. And of course, if any of you wanted to go with them, that's also fine of course. But I just need my time." 

"Agreed." Vision nodded, which did surprise Penny. 

"Of course." Steve murmured. 

"I. . ." Here Elizabeth looked guilty and looked between Fury, Rhodey, T'Challa, Bucky, and Sam. "No matter if I'm ready or not, when I near my due date, I will come back. No matter what. But I'm sorry that- I mean if you want me to wai-" 

"No." Penny's father interrupted whatever Elizabeth was going to say. "Babydoll, please take your time. As long as I'm there for the birth of the kids, everythings' okay. I just want you to get better and I know the rest of us feel the same." 

Penny was a little amused with her father. It definitely didn't leave the other four any room to argue against him. 

Elizabeth was silent again for a moment before her eyes flicked over to her friends, "Look. Whatever past we have behind us. . . if you-" 

"You're stupid." Ghaida said in an almost fond voice before Elizabeth could even say what she wanted to say. Penny didn't blame Elizabeth for looking taken aback. 

"Huh?" Clint voiced everyone elses' confusion. 

Ghaida rolled her eyes and Steve shifted in his seat. "Elizabeth believes that we were just her friends because of her mother. You should be a little smarter than that Eliza. You're our sister and we love you just as such. Nothing changes that." 

Elizabeth smiled a little and shrugged, "Wasn't always the smartest." 

"Still aren't." Trang quipped, before hugging her from behind. 

"And. . ." Elizabeth hesitated again, looking at Heimdall and then Wanda. "Being the Goddess of love. . . I don't suppose I've used my powers there, have I? Was Riri right, or half right?" 

"About what?" Riri asked, confused, while also looking guilty at the same time. Elizabeth addressed her. 

"When you said that maybe the Avengers were under a love spell. . . maybe I did do that." Elizabeth said uncertainly. "And maybe that's why I was always pursued by everyone. I mean, even my own step-mother wanted me for herself and killed my dad over it. . . me." Her face paled. Her eyes flicked over at Bucky, who was rigid in his seat. "And maybe that's why I could break through the soldier-" 

"No." Heimdall answered for her. "Your powers don't work like that. No one you've met in your entire life has ever been under any sort of love magic. Anyone in this room and out of it that has loved you or does love you, does it of their own accord." 

Penny could see how relieved Elizabeth looked with this information. 

"And, lastly." Elizabeth said softly, looking at Loki. "Last year around this same time you mentioned a bonding ceremony, something that would marry all of us. Some of us said that we needed time. I still need time but. . ." 

She broke off and Elijah touched her shoulder. She breathed out, closing her eyes, "The thing is, I'm selfish. I don't want to lose any of you." She opened her eyes, scanning the room. "But I will, because of how slowly I age." She gripped Elijahs' hand suddenly, as though she needed something to ground herself. "Loki, Thor, Hogun, Fandral, Volstagg, Sif, Heimdall, Steve, Bucky, Nick, Vision, Bruce, Natasha, Ghaida, myself, maybe Stephen. . . we're all going to live for a really long time." 

"Loki will outlive you two." She said, gesturing to Tony and Stephen, "Unless Stephen manages to keep himself alive with dark magic like the Ancient one. Bucky and Steve will outlive Sam. Thor will outlive Penny. Nick will outlive Penny and Maria and Phil. Vision will outlive Wanda. I'll. . . I'll. . ." She swallowed, unable to continue. 

"My point is, that this ceremony Loki suggested will tie us in with their life lines." Elizabeth said, staring at Loki, "right?" 

"Yes." Loki murmured. 

The room was silent for a moment before Elizabeth continued again, "I'm not pressuring anyone into it, I don't even really want to hear an answer right now. I just thought we should have time to think about it and when I come back. . . maybe we could have another discussion." 

"I think that sounds good." Lan said, looking over at Katya. 

"Okay that was that." Elizabeth said, quickly sitting back from the table as though hoping she would disappear from view. 

"I just have a question." Tony said, looking at Heimdall. "Everything that you chose to make happen. . . did it really need to happen?" 

Heimdall nodded to Wanda and closed his eyes. Wanda stood up, walking over to him, putting her hands near the sides of his head and a similar holographic cloud, not unlike the one that had shown Elizabeth's memories appeared in the middle of the table. 

"There were some, of course, that went very similarly, but with more death." Heimdall said slowly. Penny watched as Lan, Mai, Ahni, Josh, and Jay were all killed. Katya gasped out loud while Mai flinched, wrapping her arms around Ahni. 

"And others. . ." Heimdall drifted off. 

This vision showed Howard Stark in the car with the little Elizabeth, but this time pulling up to a mansion. Time skipped a little as Tony was born very soon after and soon went from being her little brother, to being her older brother. 

When Howard and Maria were killed in the car accident, Elizabeth took over Stark industries while Tony continued on being more like a playboy. And so Elizabeth was the one who ended up in Afghanistan. Elizabeth was the one that became the first Iron Woman. 

Loki eventually came to Earth and recognized Elizabeth immediately, who introduced him to Tony. When Killian came however in the future, Tony died. 

"Oh." Stephen whispered, flinching a little. 

"There are many futures like that." Heimdall said with a slow nod, the cloud disappearing. "Ones where you all died, ones where she died. This was the safest one, only one death." 

"Jays." Trang whispered softly. 

Heimdall looked at her. "I'm sorry Trang. There were no futures like this one if Jay stayed alive. You would give birth to Daisy and he would have you give her up to Tony because she was not his daughter. I couldn't let that happen to you or Tony or Daisy." 

Trang nodded, tears coming to her eyes. 

"There were more complicated ones." Heimdall continued. "Ones where some of you got sent back in time. There was another that was a desperate attempt done by your mother where you got sent into another universe on a dinosaur island. Just about everyone died in that world." 

"You're joking." Rhodey said, raising an eyebrow. 

Heimdall just looked at him. 

"Okay, not joking." Rhodey muttered. 

"What's a dinosaur?" Volstagg asked, still eating sausages. 

No one answered him. 

"So this was the only path." Steve clarified. 

"In my mind." Heimdall answered. 

"I would agree." Ghaida nodded. 

There was silence in the kitchen. 

"I think now would be a good time to tell you guys something." Her father said, stepping forwards. 

"What?" Tony asked grouchily. 

"With this information, you have to promise not to kill the prisoner that is being moved here today." Fury said, crossing his arms over his chest. That got everyone's attention. 

"No!" Ghaida suddenly gasped, eyes orange, snapping her head towards Penny's father. "What were you thinking?" 

Elizabeth had suddenly gone very pale, standing up, clutching the counter for support. 

"When I saw what happened in Elizabeth's memories." Her father started slowly, looking only at Elizabeth. "I knew I had to admit that he was alive. He'll be a prisoner here, have his own cell. No one will know he is here, Stark will see to that. He's. . . well your way of getting your anger out. Which is why you won't kill him. Because he doesn't deserve death." 

"Who did you bring here?" Natasha asked in a deadly quiet voice. 

"Pierce." Elizabeth choked out. 

Bucky shot to his feet, Steve right after him, pulling Bucky into his arms. "Buck!" 

"Where is he?" Bucky snarled, thrashing in Steve's arms. Thor was immediately there with Heimdall, the three huge men trying to keep him down. 

Bruce immediately relinquished Valentine from his arms. T'Challa wrapped his arms around him, hugging him so that Bruce would keep the hulk in. 

Penny felt her own rage, finding herself on her feet, wanting to find Pierce and stab him through the neck. 

"Loki." Her father addressed the furious God. "I want a spell done on him. A healing one. So he can be harmed over and over again." 

Loki's blue eyes glittered and a cruel smirk came over his face. "Consider it already done." 

"I want to talk to him first." Elizabeth's voice rang out over the commotion in the kitchen. It calmed Bucky down at the very least. 

"Elizabeth." Steve started, worry lacing his voice. 

"Please? Where is he?" Elizabeth asked quietly. 

"He's down under the tower." Fury replied. "Floor zero."

Tony huffed, not knowing that Fury had known about that floor and exchanged a look with Trang. 

Elizabeth swept from the room to the elevator. 

Bucky lunged out of Steve's arms, racing for the same elevator, Steve and Sam taking off after him. Loki was quick to follow after that. Penny shook her head, looking over at her father. "Why?" 

"Because he needs to feel pain." Her father answered. "And here's a whole group, more than willing, to give it to him."

According to the files, Larry Parker’s first name is Laurence, the man we meet near Arcade machines is Morris Aubrey, and the fisherman is Coyote Nelson… but his description in the unreleased in-game encyclopedia also implies he died, so that might be inaccurate.
