Storia Di Musica #255 - AA.VV., Dylan In Jazz. A Jazz Tribute To Bob Dylan, 2018

Ne è uscita fuori una compilation dal grande gusto e dalle scelte niente affatto scontate, che è il piccolo regalo di Natale di questa rubrica. Il titolo, Dylan In Jazz, spiega solo in parte le scelte e gli artisti, in una selezione che nasconde delle storie niente affatto male. Tutte le registrazioni erano presenti in dischi precedenti, ma insieme mostrano una amalgama sfiziosa e logica. Si parte con la riedizioni blues di Master Of Wars di Eric Bibb, grandissimo nome della chitarra acustica blues, che con la sua voce cavernosa e i tocchi “tristi” alla sei corde racconta dei signori della guerra, classico di Dylan sfortunatamente sempre di attualità. Il secondo brano è la prima perla: Jack DeJohnette, formidabile batterista jazz, con il bassista Larry Grenadier, John Medeski alle tastiere (il quale collaborerà spesso con lo stesso Dylan nella sua carriera) e la chitarra di John Scofield, pioniere del jazz rock con Miles Davis, nel 2017 scrivono un disco a nome Hudson, in omaggio al fiume che attraversa New York, bellissimo e in cui fanno una cover strumentale, e riuscitissima, di Lay Lady Lay, classico da Nashville Skyline (1969). Ben Sidran, tastierista, produttore, ingegnere del suono, dedicò un intero disco a cover di Dylan, Dylan Different del 2009, da cui sono tratte le sue interpretazioni smooth jazz di Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door e Gotta Serve Somebody, una delle gemme meno conosciute di Bob Dylan, dal suo album “gospel” Slow Train Coming del 1979, canzone tra l’altro che vinse il Grammy come migliore canzone rock maschile nel 1980. Abbey Lincoln, cantante e compositrice jazz, attivista dei diritti civili e femminili, moglie di Max Roach, rilegge con passione Mr. Tambourine Man, dall’ arrangiamento con spiccato groove della batteria. Joshua Redman, sensazionale sassofonista della ultima generazione, insieme all’altrettanto grandioso piano di Brad Meldhau, suona una deliziosa The Times They Are A-Changin’, uno dei pezzi più belli della carrellata. C’è una bella parentesi di black music: la versione R&B/soul/funk dei Neville Brothers di The Ballad Of Hollis Brown, due artisti dimenticati come Stanley Turrentine con una versione, piuttosto modificata, di Blowin’ In the Wind, Girl From The North Country del compianto Howard Tate, fenomenale cantante soul la cui carriere non decollò mai del tutto per i suoi problemi di alcool e eroina. Il jazz ritorna nella scelta della storica cover che Keith Jarrett fece di My Back Pages, dal suo album Somewhere Before del1968, il mandolino elettrico di Bill Frisell in una versione strumentale struggente di Just Like A Woman, la ripresa di Ballad Of Thin Man di Jef Lee Johnson con Charlie Patierno e Yohannes Tona. Molto belle le cover cantate di Like A Rolling Stone, dalla cantante jazz danese Cæcilie Norby con un arrangiamento dolcemente caraibico, e una cover sentita di Everything Is Broken, singolo di Oh Mercy! del 1989, un disco che rilanciò nel mondo musicale Dylan, della cantante francese Louisa Bey. Personalmente è bellissima la cover di Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright (che è una delle canzoni con più cover in assoluto) del duo franco-italiano composto dalla band el pianista Olivier Hutman e dalla voce, meravigliosa, di Alice Ricciardi. L’ultimo verso di uno dei testi più belli e dolorosi del Dylan giovanile (il brano è da The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan del 1963) dice:

I The Black Keys sono stati e sono tutt’ora una delle mie band preferite, anzi primo posto a pari merito nel podio post ‘00. Quando li ho scoperti io erano tutto quello cercavo nella musica, ricordo ancora il giorno. Un duo senza troppe seghe mentali, pezzi diretti, tanti richiami, produzione raw e, soprattutto grande e vero blues.

Insomma, loro:

Questo, Live in Austin 2003, per me rimane il vero spirito dei The Black Keys. E io non lo scordo. Ero e sono cotto. Ho tradotto in italiano la prima versione completa della pagina wikipedia, cercavo un dischi ovunque, informazioni ovunque.

Però ovviamente arriva il successo sempre maggiore, meritatissimo, un gruppo deve evolversi e io (persona matura) lo capisco benissimo. Il 2010 dove con Brothers accade qualcosa. Un cambio di rotta. Capiscono che possono osare, allontanarsi da loro stessi ma facendo qualcosa di veramente bello ugualmente. Il suono è quello ma qualcosa è diverso, cambiano temi, produzione (Danger Mouse ciao!), si aggiungono strumenti, il blues lo si lascia nel cassetto troppo spesso. Tuttavia, è un gran disco. Successone di vendite meritato, ma ma MA MA fa capire ai TBK quale direzione è auspicabile prendere per richiamare più persone, riempire palazzetti e fare soldi. Sempre produzione originali, ma più di facile ascolto

Insomma il pubblico aumenta, la gente inizia a conoscerli, e il prodotto di questo periodo è El Camino, trainato dal singolo e dal video di Lonely Boy. Appena lo vidi dissi: “wow, che riff, grandi, però il pezzo fa cagare, faranno il botto a sto giro”.

A mio parere, da vecchio fan che ascolta blues, è un disco carino, ma rappresenta il primo flop musicale del duo. C’erano buone idee, c’erano loro, ma hanno cercato di accontentare il pubblico generalista scadendo troppo nel banale, per evitare di perdere pubblico. Una prova per me è la breve distanza di uscita da Brothers (un anno e mezzo prima) e un’intervista a Pat in cui diceva qualcosa come “sarà un gran album, molto veloce, non so se riuscirò a riprodurre i brani dal vivo”.

2 o 3 pezzi sono azzeccati, ma gli altri sono riempitivi troppo troppo distanti da quello che possono fare, tuttavia senza raggiungere l’eccellenza di Brothers. Canzonette per il genio di Dan. Si balla, si salta, ma si può fare di più che un paio di canzoni tirate, una ballad con un bel solo e continuare ad abusare del basso.

Perché un po’ lo odio? Perché ha portato uno dei miei gruppi preferiti ad essere apprezzati dalla gente e io odio la gente. Perché Lonely Boy in discoteca anche no. Perché dopo Brothers avevo un grande hype. Perché non Dan non ha dato il suo meglio.

Perché il loro concerto a Milano finì sold out e io rimasi fuori a rosicare.

Festival di Venezia 2018: tutto quello che c’è da sapere

Torna il Festival di Venezia e con lui tornano le star, i film e i grandi eventi che illumineranno la Laguna rendendola, per due settimane, la casa del grande cinema. Una kermesse quest’anno, giunta alla sua 75esima edizione, più ricca che mai, con una selezione di film imponente sia per numero che per qualità (e durata, cosa su cui il direttore Barbera ha voluto scherzare in sede di conferenza stampa). Per prepararci all’inizio dell’evento, ecco tutto quello che c’à da sapere sul Festival del Cinema di Venezia 2018.

Quando inizierà il Festival di Venezia 2018? Le luci sulla Sala Grande si accenderanno alle ore 19.00 del 29 agosto in occasione della Cerimonia d’apertura che coinciderà con la consegna del Leone d’Oro alla carriera a Vanessa Redgrave. La cerimonia di chiusura, con la consegna del Leone d’Oro, si terrà sabato 8 settembre.

Quale sarà il film d’apertura del Festival del cinema di Venezia 2018? A tagliare il nastro inaugurale sarà il pluripremiato regista Damien Chazelle con il suo First Man, film ispirato alla vita di Neil Armstrong (interpretato da Ryan Gosling) e allo sbarco sulla luna da parte dell’Apollo 11.

Quali sono i film più attesi del Festival di Venezia 2018 Difficile stilare una lista dei film più attesi perché, di fatto, Venezia 75 sembra aver accontentato i gusti di tutti i cinefili. Volendo citare le pellicole più “chiacchierate”, c’è grandissima attesa per A Star is Born, pellicola che segna l’esordio alla regia di Bradley Cooper che dirige, per l’occasione, Lady Gaga. Grande attesa anche per Suspiria di Guadagnino, remake del capolavoro di Dario Argento e per le prime due puntate della serie-evento L’Amica Geniale prodotta da HBO. Tra le altre pellicole da seguire non possono non essere citati The Sister Brothers di Jacques Audiard con Joaquin Phoenix e Jake Gyllenhaal, il western The Ballad of Buster Scruggs dei fratelli Cohen, Vox Lux di Corbet, The Favourite di Yorgos Lanthimos, Peterloo di Mike Leigh. Grandissima attesa, per le parole spese da Barbera durante la sua presentazione, anche per Sulla mia pelle, film italiano di Alessio Cremonini dedicato alla vicenda Cucchi, con Jasmine Trinca e Max Tortora e con un’interpretazione, già dichiarata come incredibile, di Alessandro Borghi.

Quali sono le star più attese al Festival di Venezia 2018? Ci si aspetta una vera e propria passerella di stelle di primo piano che arriveranno al Lido quest’anno. Tra le più attese: Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Jake Gyllehaal, Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Juliette Binoche, Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Vince Vaughn, Mel Gibson, Willem Dafoe.

Quali sono i membri della giuria del Festival di Venezia 2018? Per quanto riguarda le giurie, quella del Concorso, guidata da Guillermo del Toro, sarà composta da Sylvia Chang, Trine Dyrholm, Nicole Garcia, Paolo Genovese, Małgorzata Szumowska, Taika Waititi, Christoph Waltz e Naomi Watts. La Giuria Orizzonti, invece, capitanata dalla presidente Athina Rachel Tsangari, è composta da Michael Almereyda, Frédéric Bonnaud, Mohamed Hefzy, Alison Mclean e Andrea Pallaoro.

Storia Di Musica #212 - Unicorn, Blue Pine Trees, 1974

Spero che chi leggerà la storia di oggi comprenda una piccola deviazione nel percorso di band che hanno nomi di animali preistorici: nell’impossibilità di trovarne una quarta tra i miei dischi, ho fatto una scelta sostitutiva sugli animali fantastici per raccontare una storia davvero interessante. Che inizia a metà anni ‘60 quando un gruppo di ragazzi del Surrey iniziano a suonare la musica beat che imperava all’epoca. Pat Martin che suona il basso, Pete Perrier cantante e batterista, Kenny Baker chitarra e tastiere e Trevor Mee, che è la chitarra solista, formano vari gruppi, e iniziano a suonare con successo nei locali con il nome di The Late, poi abbreviato con Late. Il loro repertorio è una antologia di cover del Mersey Sound di nuovi gruppi dei dintorni di Liverpool, che in quelli anni diventeranno iconici: hanno un buon successo e per anni sono una delle migliori pub band del Surrey. Nel 1967 vanno in tour in Danimarca, poi sono la band di apertura per un tour in tutta l’Inghilterra di Billy J. Kramer, cantante della scuderia di Brian Epstein, che divenne famoso cantando cover delle canzoni di Lennon e McCartney. Nel 1969 hanno una folgorazione: scoprono il folk rock americano di band come The Byrds e soprattutto il suono magico e vellutato che Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young introdussero nella musica californiana del periodo: armonie vocali sopraffine, melodie geometriche per bellezza, incastri sonori puntuali, un’atmosfera di ampiezza e di spazio indimenticabile. Decidono quindi di produrre musica secondo questi dettami, e hanno subito una grande occasione: firmano un contratto con la Transatlantic, la casa discografica britannica che per prima importò i dischi country e folk rock dagli Stati Uniti; la casa discografica impone  ai nostri un nuovo nome, e viene scelto Unicorn, e scrivono un disco, Uphill All The Way, del 1971, che come singolo ha una cover del brano P.F. Sloan, portato al successo in Gran Bretagna da Jimmy Webb. Suscitano un certo interesse e suonano ai festival in apertura ai concerti dei Lindisfarne. Nel 1972, dopo che si innamora di una ragazza svedese, Trevor Mee lascia il gruppo (continuerà a suonare per i Guernsey)  e verrà sostituito da Kevin Smith, che aveva suonato per i mitici Camel. Dopo vari tour, dove suonano anche in Italia, arriva il colpo di fortuna: alla festa di matrimonio di Ricky Hopper, uno dei manager della loro casa discografica, suonano per i festeggiati: ad un certo punto si unisce a loro un certo chitarrista, nel 1973 probabilmente il più famoso del mondo, David Gilmour dei Pink Floyd, con cui suonano le canzoni di Neil Young. Gilmour viene affascinato dalle loro armonie vocali e dal feeling tra i musicisti, e decide di produrre il loro nuovo disco. Per gli Unicorn è manna dal cielo: Gilmour mette loro a disposizione il mitico manager dei Pink Floyd, Steve O’Rourke, gli Olympic Studios di Londra e persino la mitica squadra della Hipgnosis all’artwork della copertina. Con tutto questo dispiegamento di forze, nel 1974 viene fuori un delizioso disco: Blue Pine Trees per l’etichetta regina del prog, la Charisma. La copertina è opera del leggendario team capitanato da Storm Thorgerson e Aubrey Powell, con l’aggiunta di un’altra leggenda, Alan Artridge all’artwork (che come nomi vale alla copertina una sorta di record per quantità di leggende). Gilmour produce e suona la pedal steel guitar, al resto ci pensano soprattutto Kenny Baker e Kevin Smith alla scrittura e la meravigliosa amalgama che la band ha nel suonare. 12 brani, gemme di un certo raffinato pop\rock che in quegli anni porteranno al successo tra gli altri Elton John e Al Steward, con una spruzzata di suono west coast, alla Flying Burritos Brothers di Graham Parsons, con i quali gli Unicorn suonarono per una tournee nel paesi del nord Europa che ebbe un certo successo. Electric Night, la meravigliosa Sleep Songs, la suggestiva ballad di Autumn Wine, l’intro quasi funky di Rat Race, che sa di Steely Dan, e le incursioni della chitarra inimitabile di Gilmour in Just Wanna Hold You chiudono il primo lato dell’LP. Il lato B è altrettanto fresco e sincero, nella bella Holland, nel country rock di Nightingale Crescent e nella bucolica The Farmer, In The Gym è già quasi new wave nella sua struttura e nei secchi colpi ritmici, Blue Pine Trees è molto romantica e il disco finisce con due perle: Ooh Mother che sa di serate di spiaggia al tramonto e Volcano, che è quasi hillybilly. Gilmour è la garanzia per poter, nel 1974, mandare gli Unicorn in tour negli stati Uniti, pubblicando negli USA il disco con il nome Unicorn 1 cambiando però la copertina (decisamente più brutta): suonano la prima volta sul suolo americano nientemeno che al mitico Whisky a Go Go con Patti Smith, e saranno band di apertura ai concerti di Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, Doobie Brothers e Linda Ronstadt. Questo permise a Blue Pine Trees di arrivare addirittura al 3° posto nella classifica di Billboard nel 1974. Gilmour produrrà un altro disco bellissimo, Too Many Crooks, del 1975, con altra copertina meravigliosa della Hipgnosis e le foto interne di Mick Rock, ed una canzone, No Way Out Of Here, fu ripresa dallo stesso Gilmour nel suo debutto solista del 1978. Il sodalizio Gilmour-Unicorn durerà anche un altro disco, sebbene a metà (One More Tomorrow verrà co-prodotto da Gilmour e Muff Winwood) ma arriverà nel 1977, anno dell’esplosione del punk che finirà per spazzare via la delicata armonia della loro musica. La band si scioglie dopo un mancato tour degli stati uniti, dove il loro stile aveva ancora molto seguito anche grazie alla musica di gruppi come i Doobie Brothers. Sono uno di quelle band minori il cui suono appare ancora fresco e attuale a distanza di decenni e sono la prova che alle feste di matrimonio può accadere davvero di tutto.

David Van Cortlandt Crosby (Los Angeles, 14 agosto 1941[1]) è un chitarrista e cantautore statunitense, inserito per due volte nella Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, nel 1991 assieme agli altri membri dei Byrds[2] e nel 1997 assieme a Stephen Stills e Graham Nash.

David Crosby è figlio di Floyd Crosby, un apprezzato direttore della fotografia statunitense. Inizialmente frequentò una scuola di arte drammatica, che però lasciò per intraprendere la carriera di musicista e inserirsi nell’ambiente del Greenwich Village. Fu membro dei Les Baxter Balladeers ai quali aveva partecipato anche Bob Dylan. La sua prima sessione da solista risale al 1963.

David Crosby was born in Los Angeles, California. His parents were Aliph Van Cortlandt Whitehead (a descendent of the prominent Van Cortlandt family) and Floyd Crosby, an Academy Award–winning cinematographer and descendent of the Van Rensselaer family.[5] He is also the younger brother of musician Ethan Crosby. Growing up in California, he attended several schools, including the University Elementary School in Los Angeles, the Crane Country Day School in Montecito, andLaguna Blanca School in Santa Barbara for the rest of his elementary school and junior high.[6] At Crane, he starred in HMS Pinafore and other musicals but was asked not to return due to lack of academic progress. He graduated from the Cate School in Carpinteria, completing his studies by correspondence. In 1960, his parents divorced, and his father remarried Betty Andrews Crosby.

Crosby also attended Santa Barbara City College.[6] Originally, he was a drama student, but dropped out to pursue a career in music. He moved toward the same Greenwich Village scene (as a member of the Les Baxter‘s Balladeers) in which Bob Dylan participated, and even shared a mentor of Bob Dylan‘s in local scene favorite Fred Neil. With the help of producer Jim Dickson, Crosby recorded his first solo session in 1963.
