How to Get Direct Admission in MD/MS in India
After completing an MBBS degree and internship, doctors become eligible to take the NEET PG entrance exam. This exam is the gateway to pursuing an MD/MS, the postgraduate course for medical students. However, the competition for these courses is intense, and the number of available seats is limited.
Opportunity through Management Quota Seats
Despite the stiff competition, there is hope for doctors seeking admission into MD/MS programs. Many private colleges in India offer direct admission through management quota seats. These seats are available to students who meet the eligibility criteria but may not have the required NEET PG cut-off marks. Since the number of management quota seats is limited, it's essential to approach the college management early to secure a spot.
Eligibility Criteria for Direct MD/MS Admission
To qualify for direct admission through the management quota, candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria. Without meeting these requirements, securing a seat in an MD/MS program is not possible.
The process for direct admission usually begins during the mop-up round, the final phase of NEET PG counseling. The first three rounds of counseling are reserved for candidates with high NEET PG scores. However, the mop-up round provides an opportunity for those looking to secure a seat through the management quota. It’s important to note that the fees for management quota seats are typically higher than those for seats obtained through general counseling.
Eligibility Requirements for MD/MS Management Quota
According to Section 10 of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, NEET PG is the sole eligibility-cum-ranking examination for admission to MD/MS and PG Diploma courses. No other state or institutional entrance exams are valid for these admissions.
For candidates seeking management quota seats:
General Category: Must score at least 50% of the highest marks obtained.
OBC Category: Must score at least 45%.
SC/ST Category: Must score at least 40%.
Additionally, candidates must have an MBBS degree or Provisional MBBS Pass Certificate from a Medical College/Institute recognized by the Indian Medical Council. They must also possess a permanent or provisional registration certificate issued by the Medical Council of India or a State Medical Council. Furthermore, they should have completed or be likely to complete a one-year internship on or before March 31, 2023, to be eligible to apply for NEET PG.
Why Choose MD/MS Courses?
Pursuing an MD/MS from top medical schools like Vydehi, MS Ramaiah, or Raja Rajeshwari can be the key to a successful medical career. These institutions offer:
Experienced Faculty: Access to well-qualified and experienced teachers.
Advanced Infrastructure: State-of-the-art labs, cutting-edge equipment, and extensive libraries with a vast collection of books and journals.
Research Opportunities: Exposure to the latest diagnostics, treatment methods, and medical technologies through active investment in research.
Quality of Life: Comfortable hostels and sports facilities that contribute to a better student experience.
Conclusion
NEET PG is one of the toughest exams in the medical field, requiring proper guidance to succeed. At College Storia, we provide comprehensive counseling and guidance for students aiming to pursue postgraduate medical courses. We work closely with some of the top private medical colleges in India to help students secure direct admission into MD/MS programs. Reducing Cut-Off Percentile For NEET PG 2023 Will Increase Pool Of Qualifying Candidates: Health Ministry
Till now, candidates scoring above the 50 percentile were eligible to participate in the counselling process for medical PG admission through NEET.
New Delhi: Union Health Ministry officials on Friday said reducing the qualifying percentile for NEET PG 2023 to zero will increase the pool of qualifying candidates but not dilute the merit system for admission to PG medical courses. Only those scoring the highest marks will get admission to PG medical courses, they said. The admission will be done through a transparent counselling process and will do away with alleged backdoor entry that was offered by some private colleges, the officials said.
They dismissed as imaginary the speculation that students with zero percentile can also become specialist doctors. The reality is that students with the highest marks will be eligible for admission to their choice of courses and colleges, they said.
There are 68,142 PG medical seats in the country.
Till now, candidates scoring above the 50 percentile were eligible to participate in the counselling process for medical PG admission through NEET.
Last year, the qualifying criteria were kept at 20 percentile even then 3000 seats remained vacant under the all India quota, they said.
Some seats remained vacant under the state quota as well.
“This year alone, of the 68,000 available seats, 13,000 still haven’t been taken up,” an official said.
Till now, candidates scoring the most marks were given the first preference for choosing the course and college. The entire admission is online and computer-based.
“Since a lot of seats in the entire process remained vacant, the students with zero percentile marks are now being given the opportunity to participate in the counselling process. The move for students means that admission through the counselling process will continue till seats are available,” the official said.
From time to time, the Supreme Court and various high courts on various petitions had stated that an arrangement should be made to ensure no seats remain vacant. “The present move will increase the pool of qualifying candidates but only those scoring the highest marks will get admission for PG medical,” an official source said.
The entire process will still be merit-based and only that many students will get admission as there are PG seats in the country, the officials said.
Under the present system, seats in non-clinical branches like anatomy, microbiology, physiology and pathology went vacant due to a lesser number of students opting for them.
“Now this move will lead to a greater likelihood of these seats being filled. And 7000 to 10,000 going vacant every year will get filled,” an official source stated.
“It is for the information to candidates that the qualifying percentile for PG Courses (Medical/ Dental) for NEET PG counselling 2023 has been reduced to ‘zero’ across all categories by MoHFW,” said a notice issued by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), Directorate of Health Services, Government of India on Sep 20.

NEET PG 2023 postponement demand reaches court, here is why students have been protesting
NEET PG 2023 exam is less than a month away and aspirants have been protesting for the postponement of the exam. The issue for the postponement of the exam which is scheduled to be held on March 5, has also reached into the hands of courts right now. On February 14 the students filed a case in the Supreme Court.
Dr Rohan Krishnan, National Chairman of Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) a non profit organisation that had been actively raising the voice of the NEET PG 2023 aspirants to the Health Ministry told CNBC-TV18.com that they will get a diary number tomorrow and get listing then the hearing can be expected within three to four days.
Meanwhile a petition was also filed in the High Court of Telangana by the students for the same. As per the website collegedekho quoting official sources from the Telangana High Court the latest update is that the High Court has asked the National Medical Commission to reconsider the exam date. NMC will decide in two weeks that will the exam get postponed or not. CNBC-TV18 could not confirm the information.
Notably a group of students on February 7 started a petition for the postponement of the exam on Change.org and so far more than 14,000 people have signed the petition.
Why are the students demanding the postponement?
NEET PG is the entrance exam that students need to pass to pursue their masters in medicine in India. To sit for the exam the students are required to possess an MBBS degree or Provisional MBBS Pass Certificate recognised by the Indian Medical Council Act 1956. With that they are also required to have completed the one year mandatory internship.
Now NEET PG examination happens in March every year but in past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic that exam was conducted in later months. NEET PG 2021 exam happened in September while NEET PG 2022 happened in May.
This year the government decided to bring back the pre pandemic dates. With that the eligibility criteria for the one year mandatory internship was that the students should have completed the internship by March 31. The aspirants then protested to extend the date for completion of internship as because with March 31 date nearly half the students from the current batch of applicants would have been ineligible. The pandemic resulted in delays of the medical academic calendar over the last three years resulting in the internship completion time to be delayed.
In response to this on February 11, the National Board of Examination (NBE) that conducts the screening test for post-graduate medical courses extended the internship cut-off date to August 11, making 13,000 additional students from five states eligible for the 2023 examination.
Doctors' associations and aspirants, however, are urging the date of the exam to be postponed. The applicants have been demanding for the exam to be postponed by two to three months to close the gap between the result announcement and the counselling procedure.
“The entrance exam will happen in March and the counselling will happen in August. This means a five month gap between the exam and the counselling. The students will not be doing any job in these five months and can use this time to study for the examination and pursue their dreams,” said Krishnan. Read More On..

The date of the NEET PG 2023 will be changed! The doctors can then receive another 'gift.'
NEET PG Date 2023: Doctors Association has written a letter to the Health Minister to change the date of NEET PG exam 2023. There is also a demand to change the deadline for MBBS medical internship.
Will NEET PG 2023 be Postponed? There is good news for doctors doing MBBS. The date of NEET PG 2023, the entrance exam for admission in PG medical courses, can be changed. United Doctors Front Association has written a letter to Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in this regard. Apart from this, the association has made another big demand for MBBS doctors. What is that demand? What is the reason behind the demand for extension of NEET PG 2023 date? Know here.
United Doctors Front Association says that medical students are very confused. As of now, due to the advance date of NEET PG exam, due to the things going on, they are not able to focus on their studies as well.
Why want to postpone NEET PG 2023?
In a letter sent to the Health Minister, the medical association has written, 'Recently, on January 10, 2023, the special stray round of NEET PG 2022 counseling has been completed. When many NEET PG candidates were busy in counseling session. During this, he could not get a chance to prepare for the upcoming examination. Therefore, we appeal to pay immediate attention to this matter and do justice to the NEET PG candidates.
The association has demanded to extend the date of NEET PG 2023 by at least two to three months. As per the current schedule released by NBEMS, NEET PG Exam 2023 is to be held on 5th March. If the NEET PG exam is postponed as per the demand, then it can be taken in June-July 2023.
Demand to change MBBS internship date
Apart from NEET PG date, Doctors Association has also demanded to revise the date of MBBS internship. The association says that many medical interns have still not qualified to sit for the PG entrance exam. According to the new guideline of National Board of Examinations (NBE) for NEET PG 2023 exam eligibility criteria, the date for completion of internship is June 30. Accordingly, about 10,000 Medical Interns in many states will be ineligible for NEET PG. Read More On..

NEET PG 2023: Madhya Pradesh HC Grants Interim Relief to MBBS Students
The principal bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur has granted interim relief to Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students by allowing them to register online for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET PG) 2023 despite not fulfilling the eligibility criteria. The students had moved the HC over the eligibility criteria of completing the internship before NEET PG registration.
About 1,500 MBBS students from the 2017 batch of MP Medical Science University are worried as their internship is going to complete on July 25, while the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has only extended the internship deadline for NEET PG registration only till June 30, 2023.
“MBBS students of MP who have been declared ineligible as their 1-year internship is ending on 25 July 2023, around a month later than the cut-off date, will now be able to at least fill their forms,” Advocate Aditya Sanghi, who appeared on behalf of MBBS students, said.
Advocate Sanghi further stated that as the internship began on July 25, 2022, it will end after the completion of one year. The advocate further stressed that one year of the MBBS candidate would have been wasted for being denied Pre-postgraduate examination eligibility due to non-completion of the internship period.
