Sev pulled the sheet over the top of your head, leaving your face exposed so he could talk to you as he crouched beside the motel bed. His grin stretched wide beneath the pair of black welding goggles over his eyes. “Stay here,” he said. “I’ll be right back.”

“Where are you going?” you said.

“Jus’ out to the car,” he said. “Gonna get yer jacket.”

You’d left your leather jacket out in the car last night. You didn’t need it. Especially now, when the sun still hung low in the sky.

“Sev, it’ll be dark in another hour,” you said. “Just wait.”

“Can’t,” he said, standing up. He was already tugging his own unzipped leather jacket up over his head to shield it. He bent down to kiss your forehead. “I mean it, now. Stay under them covers ‘til I get back.”

You tried to protest as he crossed the room, but Sev ignored you. He paused at the door. “You hid?” he said with his hand on the doorknob.

Reluctantly you curled up under the sheets and covered your face. “Yeah,” you said, your voice muffled.

You heard the creak of the door opening before it slammed shut. Time crawled by while you waited for Sev to come back. Outside you heard the car door open. Shut. A barked curse from Sev. Then the motel room door burst open and shut again. As soon as you knew you were safe from the light, you sat up and threw off the sheets.

Sev sat down heavy on the edge of the bed. His hands were burnt black, holding your jacket. Before you could comment on the burns, he pushed the jacket into your lap. “Feel it,” he said. He sounded excited, almost innocent. “It’s still warm.”

He didn’t need to tell you. You felt the heat on your bare thighs. You ran your hands over the leather slowly, savoring the warmth. Sometimes the nights were warm, but not like this. This leather had been touched by the sun. You held the jacket and it felt like you were holding God’s hand.

Sev ripped off his goggles and leaned in to smell the jacket you held up to your own nose. “Why’s it smell so good?” you said as you both drank in that strange delicious scent.

“That’s sunshine, baby,” he said. He took your jacket in his blackened hands and draped it over your shoulders. “Hurry up, suga’. Put it on.”

As you slipped your arms into the sleeves, you were enveloped in warmth and that sweet forbidden scent of sunlight.

Sev pulled the jacket closed and zipped it up for you with his charred fingers. Then he buried his face in your jacket, using his weight to push you down onto the bed. His fists clenched in the leather, holding on tight as he nuzzled his cheek against your chest. You wrapped your arms around him, your fingers threading through his dark hair. He growled happily as your leather sleeves surrounded him.

“Goddamn, I wish it’d last,” he said. You knew what he meant because you could feel it, too. The borrowed warmth of the jacket was already fading. So was its heavenly fragrance. Now you understood why Sev hadn’t been willing to wait until dark to get your jacket from the car. God didn’t stick around after dark. His touch grew cold.

I've never seen a digital copy of this movie, aside from clips on youtube that is. And I'm so excited that it's now on such a widely available platform! I really hope to see more content involving this movie now that it's online.

If you haven't already, go watch Near Dark. It came out the same year as The Lost Boys but was overshadowed, and that is a fuckin crime. It's amazing, so amazing I got one of the main characters tattooed on the back of my thigh. 🥰

(And if you don't know already Tubi is totally free, and you don't need to make a profile, anyone can use it for free. The only "downside" is that it has ads/commercials.)

If you like Bill Paxton, or vampire cowboys/outlaws, go watch this movie! The man is a possum of a vamp, and he is incredibly chaotic and wild. I love him with all my heart. ❤️
