There are lots of books that are funny, or clever, or pretty to look at, but there are far fewer that are uniquely, memorably SPECIAL. Sydney Smith's "Small in the City" (2019) struck me almost immediately as something special. Perhaps it was just a personal bias towards seeing the familiar landmarks, touchstones, landscape of my home scattered throughout the illustrations - the unmistakable colours and shapes of the buses and streetcars, signs, etc. But I don't think so. More likely, it was the way I was drawn in by the gently told story, spare of word, which begins almost unnervingly with a child surrounded by the overwhelming sights and sounds of the urban downtown, looking for ... something ... all by themselves. But as the story unfolds and eases into familiar territory, as we begin to understand what it is that we are seeing, we breathe a sigh of relief and fall deeper into it. I received a copy of this book from its US publisher for consideration in the #findmestories_2019 Best Books list, but reviewing it was entirely at my discretion. I am very enthusiastic about endorsing it.
