"The Confession of Lily Dare" is a play written by Charles Busch, an American playwright and actor known for his campy and comedic works. The play tells the story of Lily Dare, a woman who rises from a humble background to become a glamorous star, navigating through various melodramatic and humorous situations.
“The Confession of Lily Dare" is a satirical comedy that often parodies the style and conventions of classic melodramas. It explores themes of ambition, identity, and the pursuit of fame. The play has been performed in various theaters, and it has received positive reviews for its witty dialogue, over-the-top characters, and Busch's signature comedic flair.
"The Confession of Lily Dare" is a uniquely dramatic, yet sometimes funny, exploration of the complex rise and fall in the life of Treasure Jones, Mandalay, or Lily Dare. Her life story offers hope to the bleak post-COVID pandemic San Francisco landscape because, as a gutsy San Francisco madam, Lily Dare was able to rise above the ashes of the great San Francisco earthquake, the Great Depression, motherhood, and multiple incarcerations. Lily Dare is an iconic figure, both pre and post the SF Barbary Coast era, and she is worthy of being known as the Madame Laureate of San Francisco.
Busch’s Body of Work
Charles Busch is an American playwright, actor, and drag performer known for his unique blend of campy humor, wit, and theatricality. He is considered a prominent figure in the world of off-Broadway and alternative theater. Busch has written and starred in numerous plays, often featuring strong female characters and drawing inspiration from classic Hollywood and theatrical genres.
Some of his well-known works include "The Tale of the Allergist's Wife," "Vampire Lesbians of Sodom," "Die, Mommie, Die!," and "The Divine Sister." Busch's plays often incorporate elements of comedy, melodrama, and parody, and he frequently portrays the lead female roles in his own productions.
In addition to his work as a playwright, Charles Busch has also had a successful acting career on stage and screen. He has been recognized with awards and nominations for his contributions to the theater, and his unique style has earned him a dedicated following.
SF Great Earthquake
The San Francisco Great Earthquake is the devastating earthquake that struck San Francisco on April 18, 1906. It was one of the most destructive earthquakes in the history of the United States. The earthquake, estimated to be a magnitude 7.8, caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure in the city. Additionally, the subsequent fires that broke out due to ruptured gas lines resulted in further destruction. The disaster led to the loss of numerous lives and left a significant impact on the city's landscape and population. The event prompted significant efforts for rebuilding and improving earthquake-resistant structures in San Francisco.
Great Depression
The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic downturn that started in 1929 and lasted throughout the 1930s. It was characterized by a significant decline in economic activity, high unemployment rates, and widespread poverty.
San Francisco, like many other cities in the United States, experienced the effects of the Great Depression. The city's economy suffered from the collapse of industries such as construction and manufacturing, as well as the decline in international trade. Unemployment rates soared, and many individuals and families faced hardships, struggling to make ends meet.
During this period, San Francisco, like other cities, saw a rise in shantytowns or "Hoovervilles" where the homeless built makeshift shelters. The Great Depression also had an impact on the cultural and artistic scene in San Francisco. Many artists and writers found themselves struggling financially but continued to produce works that reflected the social and economic challenges of the era.
Efforts were made at the federal and local levels to alleviate the effects of the Great Depression. Initiatives such as President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs aimed to provide relief, recovery, and reform. In San Francisco, public works projects and government assistance programs were implemented to create jobs and support those in need.
While the SF Great Depression brought significant challenges and hardships to the city, San Francisco eventually began to recover as the national economy improved during World War II, and subsequent post-war developments contributed to the city's revitalization.

“This Side of Crazy” at New Conservatory Theatre Center
You know how Tolstoy said all happy families are alike in the same way, but every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way? Well, the Blaylocks are very unhappy, but in an hysterical way. Ditty, the mama, is a successful composer of Christian music, but she is estranged from two of her daughters and the third (who lives with her) isn’t too pleased with her, either. And none of the daughters speak to each other anymore.
So when Mama wants to get the girls together again (for her own selfish purposes) for a reunion of the singing group she stage mothered them into, things go a little off the rails in this Southern Gothic comedy from Del Shores.

“The View UpStairs” at NCTC
Spoiler alert: The View UpStairs doesn’t end well. It has a lot going for it, including some terrific music and a standout performance from Anthony Rollins-Mullens. But there was a cognitive dissonance between the catty fun and all the shade being thrown by a group of gay men (and one lesbian) in a New Orleans gay bar in 1973 and the fate they all meet by the time the curtain falls.

Description: One thing I truly value when seeing a production at NCTC is that they are not afraid to do new, challenging works. You leave a performance at NCTC thinking about the messages of the play, how it challenges your assumptions and ways of thinking, and then makes you want even more of it! Over the years I have enjoyed seeing their productions of The Nance, Mothers and Sons, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, and It's Only a Play, among others. This upcoming year promises to be an artistically fulfilling season with premieres and past favorites comprising the line up. See you at NCTC!
