June 18, 1916 - The Fourth Marine Regiment, commanded by Col. Joseph H. Pendleton, lands with Marine detachments from USS Rhode Island, USS New Jersey, and USS Salem at Santo Domingo City, Dominican Republic during a revolution. The U.S. assumes control of the Dominican fiscal matters, leads the Guardia Nacional, and keeps the peace. Marine detachments remain in the Dominican Republic until Sept. 16, 1924 when they withdraw. May 30, 1904 - The Marine Detachment from USS Brooklyn (ACR 3) lands at Tangiers, Morocco to protect the American Consulate during the dispute between Raisuli & Sultan Abdelaziz of Morocco. The tension started after kidnapping of American businessman Ion Perdicaris on May 18, 1904 and held for ransom. Perdicaris is eventually released unharmed. #NavyHistoryoftheDay #USNavy #OTD
