Nav Varsh Abhinandan
The beautiful Spring season is here and the Chaitra Navratri shall follow soon. The new leaves, buds and flowers signify new life, new beginnings, prosperity and renewed hope! Our ancients calculated the new year from the auspicious Chaitra month. On 22 March, 1957, the Gregorian calendar was adopted for official purposes. 22 March, 2023 of the Gregorian calendar marks the beginning of the Vikrami Samvat 2080.
(The image above shows 12 Pictures of The Sun, Each Month, Same Place, Same Time. Photo by Ciro Russo)
Lord Brahma started creating the universe on the first day of the Chaitra Navratri. Jau (barley) was the first crop to be cultivated then. We sow Jau and grow Khetri in reverence of this crop and then offer it back to Mother Nature. King Vikramaditya was coronated King on this day. The Vikrami Samvat or the Hindu calendar is named after him.
Navratri literally means nine nights. These nights are symbolic of the darkness of ignorance. The purpose of celebrating Navratri is to enable humans to overcome this darkness. When we worship the Devi or the Mother Goddess, she is the unified form of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. These three forms together form Shakti (power). This Shakti is the energy that is emanant in Nature and the Lord himself controls it. The ninth day of the Chaitra Navratri is Ram Navami. This marks the birthday and the coronation of Bhagwan Rama.
The feminine aspect of Divinity is worshipped in Navratri. Sri Sathya Sai Baba says that the word Stree is made up of- Sa, Ta and Ra. Sa signifies Sattvic, Ta signifies Tamasic and Ra signifies the Rajasic nature of women. Stree thus represents the combination of the three gunas. You can judge a house by the Greh-Lakhmi (lady of the house), she represents the ‘everything’ of the house. The Vedas declare that where women are honoured, there divinity is present with all its potency. We worship five kinds of mothers. Firstly, we worship the Deha-Mata. She is the one who bore us for nine months and gave us the gift of life. Secondly, we worship the Gau-Mata. The cow is given the exalted position of a mother because she sustains us by converting her blood into milk. Thirdly, we revere the Bhu-Mata or Mother Earth. She is the one, on whom we are dependant for everything like shelter, water, food etc. Fourthly, we revere the Desh-Mata. Our country gives us protection, rights and the support system of society. Indians are perhaps the only people who revere the country as Mother India. Fifthly, we revere the Veda-Mata. We revere the Vedas as our heritage and as spiritual treasures. They tell us the purpose of life and guide us on the path of self-realisation.
For those who are not spiritually inclined, I would say that Navaratri is a time to revere nature and offer thanksgiving for all that nature has bestowed us with. Resources like the Earth, air, water, minerals, oils etc. should not be wasted or misused. It is important to conserve the environment for the generations to come.
Scientifically speaking, the Chaitra Navratri is placed at the intersection of winter and summer. The body needs to detox at this time to adjust itself for the upcoming summer season. And that is exactly why Navratri fasting is recommended. You can have fruits and nuts along with one meal of alternate grains (no cereals like wheat, rice etc.). Navratri foods include Kuttu ka atta, Swaank ke chawal, Singhaare ka aata, etc. And you cook with Rock salt which is an excellent detoxifying agent. But remember that a fast is a fast, as long as you don’t convert it into a feast!
So let’s do Devi Pooja in Navratri and revere the Mother Goddess in her beautiful Nav-Durga form. And while doing Devi-Poojan and Kanya-Poojan, do extend the respect to all the living goddesses around you … your mother, wife, sister, daughter, daughter-in-law and just any girl out there! Happy Navratri!

A request to all devotees of Maa Durga Majority of people are fasting as it is Navratri & always give gifts & money as dakshina to Kanjaks during Kanya Poojan on Ashtmi & Navami. This year we have no option so depending on the number of kanjaks we give gift to, all of us can donate the same amount in Pradhan Mantri fund, either through paytm or NEFT(Govt. can issue the number). I give it to 11 girls & everyone gives minimum Rs. 21, thus making it 21x11=Rs. 231. If one family will give Rs.231 then even if only 2 crore families donate, it will make Rs. 462,00,00,000.(Rs.Four Hundred Sixty Two Crores) for Corona Victims/Poor people. No load on a single person but together we can bring a huge difference. Kindly give your suggestions. 25th March, 2018 -Worshipping Maa Gauri on 8th Navratri and Kanya (Kanjak) Poojan
The eighth day of Navratri is known as Maha Ashtami. Maha Ashtami is one of the most important days in the Navratri and Durga Puja. Maha Ashtami is also known as Maha Durgaashtami.
Maa Durga is worshiped as Maa Mahagauri on Maha Ashtami. Mahagauri is the eight form of Goddess Shakti. Her color is white. Whiteners are shown by shell, Moon etc. Mahagauri means one clean and bright like a ray of lightning.
This is the form of Goddess Parvati when she did penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. It is believed that due to the intense Tapas performed by her without moving caused soil and dust to collect on her body. Lord Shiva cleaned her with water from Ganga that’s why she gets whiteners as shine & got the name as Maha Gauri. Purity is depicted in this form of Durga.
The Goddess is in the form of eight-year old child with complexion as fair as a conch, Moon and jasmine. Her clothes and ornaments are white and pure. The vehicle of Mata is bull on it she is sitting and dressed in white saree. She has three eyes and four arms. Her right upper hand is in the pose of allaying fear and right lower hand holds a trident in it. The left upper hand holds a tambourine and the lower one is in the pose of blessing. All sins of devotees are washed away due to her worship. Her power is unfailing and instantly fruitful.
Maha Ashtami – Puja Vidhi
It is very important to perform Durga puja as per the rituals given in ancient scriptures for good results. Here we will tell you step by step procedure to worship the goddess on an auspicious day of Durga Ashtami.
- Early morning is considered as the best time to perform Maha Durgashtami puja. One should take bath (snan) and install 9 earthen pot lamps.
- A ghat is established, on which the idol of goddess Durga is placed along with other gods and goddesses. While worshiping the goddess, devotees should take flowers in both the hands and offered to the idol, along with coconut with its face downwards. First Pooja to be performed is of Maa Gauri.
- Now Aradhya is given to the goddess. For Ardhya, the powder of red sandalwood is mixed in water together with flour and rice and applied on the hands of Goddess.
- After Ardhya, Achman is made and offered to the goddess. For Achman, cold water mixed with camphor in a new pitcher. Then, the idol of the goddess is bathed with Ganga jal, and Achman is offered again.
- After bathing the Goddess with holy water, she is bathed with panchamrit made with curd, milk, honey, cow’s ghee and sugar. All these items are mixed in a utensil of silver.
- Now, Akhand Jyot lamp is lighted for Goddess. Navedy offered to Goddess is made with sugar, curd and ghee mixed with Kheer.
- After Navedy, Mata is given Achman of pure water and camphor. Seasonal fruits are given to Goddess.
- Maa Gaur is gifted cardamon, cloves, betel nut and betel leaves. Coins are used while offering donation, and if coins are not available then Akshat is being used.
- Perform Aarti of Goddess with a lighted lamp for 7 times. Aarti is performed with water in a utensil of copper. And, chant the Durga Satshati mantra for 108 times.

- Sarvamangal mangaleye shive sarvarth sadhike sharneye triyambike gauri narayani namastute
- Ya devi sarvabhuteshi ma gauri rupen samsihita| namastasaye namastasye namastayaye namoh namah||
Kanjak Puja
After the puja is completed, the devotees should welcome eight small girls and a small boy in their home.
- If you are unable to arrange 8 kanya, you can worship only two girl child.
- The girl child should not more than 10 years. It is believed that two years old girl child is called Kumari, three years old girl is Trimurti, four years old girl is kalyani six years old girl is Kalika, seven years old is Chandika, eight years old is Shambhavi, nine years old girl is Durga and ten years girl is called Subhadra.

Garnish with more of chopped nuts and serve hot
Sooji Ka Halwa is a delicious dessert made on festive and auspicious occasions as offering to God or celebrating big and small achievements of your loved ones. It is one of the simplest and quick recipes that come to your rescue when there are sweet cravings or some surprise guests show up or whenever there is a happy news in the family.I loved Sooji ka Halwa when I was a kid(and still love it!!) and mom made it quite often for Prasad( offering to God) for neighborhood temple.Everyone in my family loves Sooji ka halwa and believe me they can have it anytime of the day. This warm and soft dessert is a great comfort food for cold or rainy days, and believe me the heavenly aroma of roasted Sooji/Semolina and ghee (Indian Clarified Butter) soothes your senses and elevates the mood.
It is a must make dessert and Prasad during Navratri in Northern India for Kanya Poojan. Navratis are nine days period of fasting and prayers dedicated to Hindu Goddess Durga and is celebrated all over India. In Northern India, Kanya Poojan is celebrated on the eighth day/ninth day where young girls are worshipped as the form of Goddess Durga and offered Prasad of Kala Channa(Black Chickpeas) and Halwa along with Poori (fried Indian flatbread) and also showered with small gifts. Will be doing a detailed post on Navaratis soon.
Only three basic ingredients(sooji/semolina, ghee, sugar) and just 15 minutes all it takes to make this warm and soothing dessert. Though due to use of sugar and ghee it is slightly high in calories but you can always walk/jog an extra mile to burn off those calories!!
Some points to keep in mind while making this halwa:
Take equal proportions of Sooji/Semolina, Sugar i.e ratio of sooji to sugar is 1:1. But if you want you can lessen the quantity of sugar, but for us, this proportion gives the right taste.
Halwa is cooked using water, the ratio of water to sooji is 3:1. This means if you are using 1/2 cup sooji, measure 1½ cups of water from the same measuring cup, as the adding less water can make the halwa dry or more water can make it too syrupy and can take longer to cook.
Many people use milk instead of water, but I prefer using water as cooking with milk makes it quite heavy on the stomach and also decreases the shelf life of halwa. And moreover mom made it this way and I am making this way ever since I remember.
Roast sooji on low flame, as it can burn. Keep stirring it while roasting ghee and after adding sugar and water.
Add raisins(if you are using it) when you add water, the raisins cook and soften.
Let’s see the quick and simple way of making this yumm halwa my way!!
Total Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients:
Sooji/Semolina– ½ cup
Ghee– 2-3 Tbsp or 1/4 cup
Sugar– ½ cup
Water– 1½ cup
Raisins– 7 -8
Finely chopped Almonds/Cashew nuts–7-8
Pinch of Cardamom Powder (optional)
Method:
Take a heavy bottomed pan, roast sooji in it on low flame. Roast till it starts giving the aroma.
Add the ghee and roast till the color of sooji turns light brown.
Add sugar and mix nicely, till the sugar starts dissolving.
Keep the water ready in a bowl and add to sooji mix. Keep stirring the halwa so that no lumps are formed. Add raisins along with it.
Cook till the halwa thickens, take care, keep the flame low as hot bubbles can splutter on you.
Sooji Halwa thickens when it cools down, so keep desired consistency in mind when it starts to thicken.
Garnish with finely chopped dry nuts like Almonds, Cashewnuts, Pistachios.
Ingredients for making Halwa–Sooji/Semolina, Sugar, Almonds, Raisins,Ghee
Roast sooji in a kadhai or heavy bottomed pan
Roast till it starts giving aroma of roasted sooji
Add ghee and roast
Roast till it is light brown in color
Add sugar
Mix with Sooji
Add raisins
Add water in 3:1 ratio of water to sooji
Finely chop nuts
Add water and mix
Keep stirring and cook
Cook till the halwa starts thickening
Garnish with some more chopped nuts and serve hot
Shredded coconut can also be added to halwa along with nuts, I don’t add as we like it with coconut.
Make it during any of your auspicious occasions or any kind celebrations. I always make this dessert during Ganapati and Navratri festivals or whenever my kids or hubby want!!
Please give your feedback in the comments section below, and follow the blog for more such traditional recipes.
Thanks for stopping by!!
