Test #8: Jak & Daxter

And just like that we’re back to platformers. The platforming genre is where the lava level trope came from anyway, so it’s not really all that surprising, I do my best to vary up the content reviewed here at Lavatest, but sooner or later it will always come back to the jumping games.

I feel Jak & Daxter here are a very underrated duo in to gaming world. Mario & Sonic established they weren’t going away, Banjo had divebombed into the hell that is Microsoft, Crash & Spyro had divebombed into the hell that was Activision, and with the PS2 blazing new trails, somebody had to take this time tested genre into newly hardened lands. Jak was the newcomer from Naughty Dog after they lost Crash (as previously mentioned), and honestly I’m very glad it exists. Jak & Daxter here was the first video game I ever played, and I harbor a lot of fond memories of the game. But for you, I will put my bias aside, no game gets a free pass in these trials, not even this one.

The game stars with monologe, disobedience, war, Daxter getting transformed into a rodent, an angry tree guy, a love interest, and a hefty amount of lore and worldbuilding all before the tutorial level. Ugh, It’s gonna be one of those games is it?

Basicly, you are Jak, you are trying to get your best freind Daxter north across the country to a guy who should be able to fix him. Your first major hurdle in going north? The one you face literally just outside the village, behind a farmer’s beach house? Well that would be...

Good golly they got to the point really quick with this one! The literal first goal they give you is to cross Fire Canyon here. And they don't even mean build a bridge over the top there, you literally have to drive the full length of the canyon’s bottom in that hovercraft there to reach the second town. And you have to do it within a time limit too, because the whole time you trying to keep the hovercraft from overheating. (Getting enough power to use the shield at all is the name of the game so far)

Once you’re at the second town you can take a moment to cool off. Surely you won’t be dealing with more lava any time soon right? well, roadblock #2 is a Giant flaming boulder keeping you from scaling a cliff and continuing north. Some more running around through swamps and ruins, and soon enough the boulder’s gone, now you just have to fight the gargantuar that made it.

Oh my God, really? the passage between towns 2 & 3 is also overflowing with lava. The first major boss fight of the game is literally chucking lava balls at you near constantly. It’s an ordeal but once it’s over. it’s completely over, just race some monster through the mountain pass and then we’re finally at town 3. 

And by town 3 I mean some hermit geologist’s lab in the middle of a volcano. I’m dead serious this game is more magma choked than Bowser’s Castle, and I love it.

Anyway, from here you can get to a cave full of spiders and the game’s obligatory ice level. Those are both fun, but once again what you're doing is collecting power cells to power your speeder’s heat shield. “Why?” you may ask, “How can it possibly get any hotter!?”

Buddy I have no idea how, but it did;

This is insane. The final passage, taking you to the final area of the game, is over a mile of active, underground lava tubes. This my friends, is a gauntlet in every meaning of the word. (Except the actual game series, which I do have lined up to review) The area isn’t hard, it’s just long. and to an experienced player, it really is the lava lover’s scenic route. Really, the whole game is. There’s just so many places where the stuff surfaces, so much in fact I didn’t even get a chance to talk about how it looks. (Which, considering this is the PS2, is amazing.) Honestly I can’t think of a single thing bad to say about this game’s usage of lava, other than for some people it may be a bit to much. It’s a good thing then, that on this blog there is no such thing a too much lava, and I’m happy to give this game Lava Test’s first perfect score.
