02/26/2019 Pen and ink on paper 5x7” And an accompanying poem by yours truly: Once There Stood Trees, Here // Once there stood trees, here Ripe with good fruit Their trunks had grown strong By the reach of their root // Wisdom and virtue Were layered within Wrapped thick in a coat Of durable skin // In light from the sun These giants delighted To the helpless, protection Their branches provided // One day a gale Blew in from the east A tempestuous mob The axe had a feast // Adolescences and youth Were given control The keys of the forest To worm and to mole // In darkness and tunnels These shadows conferred A way of their own A pot to be stirred // With power the goal All trust was depleted Harmony, love and Respect now had fleeted // “Consume and devour” The wind proselytized ‘Til every tall tree Had been cut down to size // The cruel and the fool Can take things apart Though building with purpose Now, that is an art // Wisdom established Chaos tore down Those who could save it Lay dead in the ground // But growth had not ceased For hope had a conscience A hunger for something Not found in the markets // Rings now exposed Hope read from their wisdom Collecting the words Of an infinite kingdom // Slowly a sprout Emerged from the heart Surrender x dependence Carved deep in the bark // Toil and pain Grew with the growing Though peace never leaving Its treasure worth knowing // Soon all could see it No gem could compete For from every pore Did Truth and Love speak // Fruit of its branches Then planted a crop A manifestation No potion could stop // The forest grew strong Its freedom constraining Love grown and guarded From wander abstaining // Once there stood trees, here Ripe with good fruit Their trunks had grown strong By the reach of their root (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/nathanyoder/p/BuXjLy2huJl/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=csf55anjdegh
