One from the Heart (1982)

I don’t think I’m even going to bother touching on the trash fire of the plot itself for this movie. Francis Ford Coppola clearly wanted to look at a bunch of tits while propping up some wet blanket of a man who doesn’t deserve shit. Hank is manipulative trash and will offend again and again. Justice for Ray!

No, far more “interesting” is just how comprehensively terrible all of the technical decisions are. Sure, the camera is really going for it, juxtaposing these two ordinary people’s lives against one another in a heightened sense using every practical trick in the book. Except Dracula does it so much better within Coppola’s oeuvre. The production design and general aesthetic of the film falls in the exact worst point between the Brechtian nightmare of Dogville and whatever the fuck Baz Luhrmann is smoking any time he makes a movie. This feels like a community theatre workshop for Moulin Rouge! transposed to the American city of sin. It simply reeks of intentional choices, silhouettes superimposed over one another, match cuts intricately designed and executed. From even the first images, this is a Freudian landscape where the Nevada mountains become a bunch of tits, and a one-night stand in the desert is replete with tightrope walks and singing cars. Artifice of itself isn’t bad, and is a core of excellent moviemaking. But this isn’t that. The Red Shoes’ ballet sequence is an absolute masterpiece, leaning into the aesthetic of the stage to crystallize all of the drama of that film and render it in a theatrical light. But when we look at the nothing characters of Frannie and Hank, one of them an underwritten empty vessel and the other a reprehensible sack of shit, when we see them put onto conspicuously vacant streets of their fake suburb, it’s just nothingness on top of nothingness on top of Vegas showmanship, haunted by relentless torch-song crooning that tortures the ear with its on-the-nose lyricism. In the lead-up to whatever will come of Megalopolis, it’s important to remember that Coppola can also make simply aggressively mediocre movies, too.

If only this had taken place in a post-9/11 world, then Hank wouldn’t be able to harass Frannie on the airplane boarding ramp.

Orson Welles filmed his Othello there, which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
