I was so happy to have had my first @flex_magazine cover published back in 1998. Even though I had so many already since 1992 or so this one felt special. Chris Lund was practically shooting the whole magazine from front cover to back and for me to get an assignment to go to Columbus and photograph the Arnold classic that year was a huge accomplishment for me at the time. Getting a cover out of the assignment was the icing on the cake. Now I realize that this was the year where pro bodybuilders started doing most muscular poses head to head, sometimes touching skulls, and snarling at each other much to the cheer and amusement of the audience. I don’t think I had ever seen it done before. Could this be the contest where it all started? It’s definitely the first magazine cover that showed two bodybuilders battling it out like this. I’m just happy I was there at that point in time to immortalize it. Joe Weider and the creative art director at the time took a chance on a young freelancer despite having the world’s best photographers under contract. I miss the world of print sometimes.
