What a finish at Atlanta, what a win for Daniel Suarez in a year he needed it most, and what a race for the ages! Three brilliant one-thousandths that will be remembered forever!

Whipple. I want to start watching NASCAR but I have no cable or any kind of sports streaming service. We're not really a sports family. D8 Can I see anything on Youtube or whatnot? (I recently listened to my NASCAR fan uncle explain the mechanics of a race and I was surprised my attention stayed and I fully understood what he was saying. 😂 That's gotta mean something.)
I am always in favor of people getting into NASCAR! This coming weekend is the first week of the 2023 Playoffs Season, so no time like the present, I say!
NASCAR Classics
As this year is the 75th anniversary of NASCAR, they just opened up a massive library of archived race footage, with what they believe are the Top 75 Races of all time pulled out and highlighted.
YouTube Full Race Replays
Pretty quickly after the race (I want to say the day after), NASCAR puts the full replay up on their YouTube channel. These are kind of hard to follow because they're raw camera footage and don't include any of the graphics (displaying the running order, for example), but is also a great resource. They take the commercials out, though, so you get to see what the cameras were looking at while the TV was playing Wendy's ads!
Live, Real-Time Race Broadcasts
Live, real-time race broadcasts are hosted across a variety of networks. The first half of the season airs on Fox and FS1, and the second half on NBC and USA. Personally, I access it through a SlingTV subscription that I've made the decision to pay for, though if it didn't cost $30 more per month I think paying for Hulu Live TV would be better.
MRN (the Motor Racing Network) also streams (for free!!) live radio play-by-play for races, which you can access in a number of ways, among them the NASCAR.Com website, the NASCAR app, and probably MRN's own website as well. You won't get the picture, but the MRN announcers and commentators are EXTREMELY good at what they do, and generally agreed to offer much better race commentary than what's on TV, even if it doesn't come with a visual. There are people who watch the race on mute with the MRN coverage playing instead!
Supplementary Media
Fox and NBC both host regular weekday NASCAR TV programming (talking about the season, drivers, etc.), and they upload the audio of these shows up as Podcasts for free. If you're interested in learning more about how racing gets talked about, and the personalities that shape it, this is a great free option, as well!
Fox creates a "Radioactive" segment every Tuesday that they put up on YouTube that offers race highlights and snippets of team radio during the race--these are a great recap of a race and can often be pretty colorful/entertaining/even iconic.
NASCAR has a surprising number of really solid journalists, who produce both paid and free content online. Matt Weaver, Jeff Gluck, Aaron Bearden, Dustin Long, and Nate Ryan are all solid reporters, and refreshing voices in the face of a lot of clickbait and uh, poor journalism. XD
She's not officially a NASCAR journalist--she is a regular journalist who likes NASCAR--but Matt Weaver's partner, Cassie Fambro, also tends to be a solid source of NASCAR commentary on Twitter.
--
Definitely feel free to drop by and talk about things you're enjoying, ask any questions you might have, react, etc.!! Welcome to NASCAR!
#and i'll say that as with all media there are ways of finding other streams online#asks#real racing

In 10,000 simulations by nascar, Harrison Burton won the championship 3 times. 😂😂😂
https://www.nascar.com/news-media/2024/09/06/what-happened-when-we-simulated-the-2024-cup-playoffs-10000-times/
Here's the details:
In Sim No. 110, Burton won at Watkins Glen while Byron and Blaney were both eliminated in Round 1, then Hamlin and Elliott followed suit in Round 2 as Burton finished 16th at Kansas and 15th at Talladega.
Burton made the Championship 4 over Bowman, Truex and Keselowski with an eighth-place run at Martinsville.
Finally, he placed second at Phoenix as the rest of the contenders (Bell, Gibbs and Larson) finished outside the top 16.
Sim No. 2,961 was less chaotic at first than Sim 110, as each of the top nine regular-season drivers advanced, but it also saw Briscoe, Burton and Bowman advancing (at the expense of Logano, Suárez and Truex), thanks in part to Burton finishing third at Bristol.
Blaney and Keselowski dropped off in Round 2 as Burton won his way forward at Talladega; the Round of 8 saw a shakeup with Byron, Hamlin and Elliott eliminated as Burton held steady with finishes of 18th, 12th and 15th. In the championship race, Larson and Reddick ran outside the top 10, but Burton outdueled Bell (who was third) to finish second and claim the title.
Finally, in Sim No. 7,558, Keselowski was the only member of the top 12 in pre-playoff points to exit in Round 1, opening the door for Burton with his seventh-place finish at Atlanta. There were some shockers in Round 2 as Bell, Reddick and Hamlin all fell by the wayside, but Burton finished 13th at Kansas and eighth at Talladega to move on.
At the precipice of the Championship 4, Burton overcame a 24th-place finish at Vegas with a pair of top 10s at Homestead and Martinsville, and Byron dropped off following a trio of finishes outside the top 25.
And in the title race, disaster struck Blaney, Elliott and Larson — none finished higher than 36th — leaving room for Burton to place 12th for the championship.
Here's the chart:

NASCAR: Full Speed
It's Daytona weekend! Which naturally means it's time to rain for 48 hours in Daytona, because heaven forbid we forget the wrath of rain delays. But at least the storm cell stretched clear to Mexico City, so there were really no doubts. We've now watched the entire NASCAR Netflix documentary series (five 1-hour episodes).
I'd heard that it was "good" and "didn't shy away from things"--and this from people who know a lot about the "things," as long-time NASCAR journalists. I'd also heard that it was a huge step up from NASCAR's various made-for-TV documentaries.
Was it good?
It was entertaining! It was good at selecting a set of narratives to follow out of the sprawl of all that could be, and not trying to overburden the five episodes with too much. It picks up right before the 2023 playoffs, and primarily follows Denny as driver+co-owner of 23XI, 23XI, and a selection of the other playoff drivers (namely those who could be considered "up-and-coming" and those who make it to the Round of 8). Some might say "too much Denny" but they found a narrative thread and followed it, and I think it was a smart use of the space they had to tell a story.
Was it a huge step up from NASCAR's various made-for-TV documentaries?
I mean, from our literal "we made this so we'd have rain delay footage to roll" pieces? ...Yes???? But I'd say it's about at the level of Dirt: The Last Great American Sport. Sure, Dirt isn't specifically NASCAR-affiliated, but it's of the genre. It's peer programming. And I say this having enjoyed Dirt! But I don't necessarily think that either of these programs would be desirable watch material for people who weren't already in this foxhole, which I think NASCAR was hoping it would be (i.e. to follow in the footsteps of F1's Drive to Survive.)
Did it shy way from things?
This is where I think Full Speed loses out to Drive to Survive. I say this as an outsider to F1--I've only ever watched one race, and I only know things through racing osmosis/following racing news in general. But I think Drive to Survive was more willing to show its raw edges as part of its story: the extreme budget disparities across teams, the Red Bull/Renault sniping, contract and sponsorship bullshit, teammates absolutely hating each other, racing and its adjacency to some absolutely wild pyramid scheme/money laundering/business nonsense.
Full Speed largely kept all of that behind closed doors. The drivers sometimes levied light critique at each other, or yelled on the radio, but it wasn't anything they wouldn't also say on broadcast TV. I think part of this is the nature of the narrative they chose: By the time the playoffs roll around, the teams involved are racing with relative budget parity; their sponsorship ducks are more or less in a row; no one had open contracts; Hendrick, for once in its life, did not have its engine curse on display. And the guys who happened to make it to the end of the playoffs all tend to be more low-key guys, outside the heat of actively racing. Like, I think you'd have to do some real, hardcore documentary work to peel back and find something really raw in... Christopher Bell, William Byron, Kyle Larson, and Ryan Blaney. Even bringing Ross Chastain in was fairly softball. The series definitely does the best with Denny. Denny is nuts and organically has a lot to offer a character profile! Series highlight: Absolutely Denny Hamlin, and his opening self-introduction in Episode 1. (Even though even Denny as more to offer than was given in the docu. Are we not going to talk about the fact that he has a race car parked in his living room?)
Overall though, in terms of driver personalities and team dynamics/business, it was a bit softball. I think part of this is just my own familiarity with the material, and knowing that there's actually more out there than made it into the documentary, which made it feel less like an investigative, character/industry-probing deep dive.
But honestly? I think a huge part of it is financial. The series felt like NASCAR was afraid to get too in the weeds because they didn't want anything in the documentary that would upset current sponsors, or seed doubt in the minds of any new ones. Like it needed to present a level of cohesion and viability in order to reassure the money. And from a storytelling perspective I think that's really unfortunate.
Verdict
I think Full Speed works best as *a* version of a NASCAR story, but not *the* NASCAR story. I'd love to see the series branch out, less so chronologically (e.g. covering the 2024 playoffs), but into different facets of the storylines that make up the sport.
My ideal branch? A "tale of two cities" approach where we follow, say, Penske, cut against a backmarker team, and the parallel narratives dive into how different running a NASCAR team can look at opposite ends of the money spectrum; how the goalposts change, the culture shifts, how different the off-track lives of those involved are.
I say "Penske" mostly because they're the current defending champions, but let it be known that in my heart I'd rather we just followed Denny again, LOL.

LAS VEGAS | The Latest: Keselowski wins 2nd stage in Vegas playoff race
New Post has been published on https://www.stl.news/las-vegas-the-latest-keselowski-wins-2nd-stage-in-vegas-playoff-race/170948/
LAS VEGAS | The Latest: Keselowski wins 2nd stage in Vegas playoff race
LAS VEGAS — The Latest on the NASCAR playoff opener at Las Vegas (all times local):
2:43 p.m.
Brad Keselowski has won the second stage of the first NASCAR playoff race, setting the stage for a big finish in Las Vegas.
Keselowski arrived at Las Vegas Motor Speedway riding back-to-back victories from the final two regular-season races. He pulled away from Stage 1 winner Martin Truex Jr. during a late restart and then held off Kurt Busch in second place to grab the second stage victory.
Keselowski hopes to keep pace in the playoffs with the Big Three of Truex, Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick. Harvick won’t finish in Vegas after blowing a tire. ___ 2:22 p.m.
Kevin Harvick is out of the NASCAR playoff race in Las Vegas after blowing his right front tire during the second stage.
Harvick’s blowout also took out pole-sitter Erik Jones, who couldn’t react quickly enough and rear-ended Harvick with 120 laps to go at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Harvick and Kyle Busch were tied atop the overall standings heading into the 10-race playoff.
Harvick likely doesn’t need a fantastic result from the first set of playoff races to advance, but the veteran driver was still furious about his tire failure.
“We had a great car, and then you put a set of tires on it and you can’t hardly make it through the field,” he said. “I’m not happy about anything right now.” ___ 2:15 p.m.
The NASCAR Cup series playoffs have begun at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Erik Jones started on the pole and was passed on the opening lap by Joey Logano as the 16 playoff competitors began their 10-race chase to the big finale at Homestead. Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. also held a lead during the first stage, with Truex winning it.
Las Vegas has a second race this season for the first time. The temperature reached only 58 degrees Fahrenheit (14.44 Celsius) during the March race, but the drivers were sweating in 99-degree (37.22) heat from the start on Sunday.
The desert sun made the 1½-mile track even slicker than usual, forcing drivers to exercise caution while looking for new grooves.
