a/n: my first fan fiction, how exciting! hope you enjoy..!! spoilers for the trilogy!!

as for warnings, there’s nothing TOO graphic or scary, but there are descriptions of panic attacks like symptoms, which could be distressing to some. there are also descriptions of phoenix eating the necklace. hurt/no comfort .over all it’s pretty sad and agnsty and maybe considered heavy. No happy end. Sorry folks

phoenix wright was never a stranger to strange dreams. (they were almost prophetic in a way, foreshadowing how he himself would bring upon his own undoing. whether that be out of loyalty of others or in spite of himself, it was a fact that his self righteousness destroy him.)

most of his dreams were with miles. by the blood that flowed through his veins and the nerve pathways that cascaded throughout his body, by god, he would save miles edgeworth in these dreams. he never remembers how he does actually save him in these dreams, (maybe that’s on purpose) but he does. he always does. they end the same, with a reunion of the two parties, with a feeling that could only be described as pure light. when they come together, in these dreams, it was as if the sun and moon, with all the stars and star dust in the sky — everything made of light — gathered together. phoenix felt that all was right with miles by his side, even his dream self muttering one night ,

“this is everything i ever wanted.”

and then phoenix would wake up. he would wake up cold, and alone, stomach void of the light that was once there just 15 minutes prior. and then phoenix had to go about his day, like nothing ever happened. walks to the courthouse filled his head with a fog that never really left. he’s getting restless, biting his nails, thinking about what he could have done differently to save miles. really save him.

tonight was different.

tonight he dreamt of dollie.

and she’s beautiful as ever.

she’s got the world in her eyes, roses on her cheeks, and a familiar heart on her chest. her voice is sickly sweet like honey, and with open arms embraces phoenix. just like old times. and a part of him wishes he could stay like this forever. so naive to the world. so trusting in others. so trusting in that inherent goodness in people.

especially in those he cares about.

she gives him a little peck on the cheek, and runs off, in a rush like she’s late to class. or late to other important affairs she’s got to deal with.

he doesn’t know. he can’t tell — or rather, he never was ABLE to tell.

so she’s gone, parting with her kiss of betrayal. in the exact opposite manner of the dreams with edgeworth, he begins the dream in a pair and ends up alone. and that light he once felt is now stomach pain. it feels like a growing nightmare he can’t escape , and his jaw , his jaw aches from chewing. and his throat feels like it’s closing in on itself

and then phoenix wakes up. he wakes up cold, and alone, with a stomach ache. shivering. he’s about to get sick.

phoenix wright calls out of work for the day.

but unfortunately he spends the day thinking about what he could have done differently to maybe save dollie. really save her.

before he goes to bed that night, he prays for the first time in a while, that something like this, or someone like dollie, never enters his life again,

closes his eyes,

and then he dreams of miles.

Just thought of a cool wrightworth concept

Hear me out, 'k?

What if they got married, but like, a long while ago, long while as in somewhere during the 7 years of hobo Phoenix

Because after Miles made himself the second dad of Trucy (even if Phoenix was reluctant to get any sort of help) and she called it out, it just sinked in

They both went "Yeah, Miles is your other dad"

And then Trucy asked if parents weren't ment to be married, as the little child she was, and they took it up like a "Okay, yeah, sure, let's get married"

And they are married, just like that (taking this up from the Japanese context, where is far easier to just get married) and there wasn't any super emotional break thru of their feelings, they just knew it was it, even tho Phoenix likes to tease Miles about the "Unnecesary feelings" from time to time

And that's it, that's the only change and it actually changes nothing, because Trucy doesn't talk about it, like, ever, its just how her family is, and that's it, unless she gets asked she won't be bringing it up

The only reason Apollo and company ever found out was because one day they noticed that "Wait, why does Mr. Wright wear a ring?"

Because neither him, not Miles usually wear it, except for their anniversary once a year, and same realization happens in the prosecutors office

And so, they ask Phoenix but he gets saved by Maya taking him out for the trial of the day, and they are left to investigate into the matter, because they don't have anything else to do anyways, and investigating stupid stuff is literally their job either way, bad thing is, their only witness is Trucy who won't tell them a thing because she thinks is more fun to let them uncover it on their own

And then you also have the team investigating on Miles' side, that would be Kay, who is curious as if this will finally lead to know who "that man" is, Sebastian, who is taking this a test to prove he's learned the methods of research of his mentor, Miles, and then Klavier also joins because he is just curious and will take in any chance to not be in his desk for five minutes and also is friends with Sebastian, they were classmates back in the day

Gumshoe is not on the team becuase he actually knows they're married, he was the witness for it as Fransizka was still out with Interpol affairs, tho that granted him a visit from her whip, actually, three of them got one for not waiting for her to be there, Maya got to record the whole thing, even if it was just signing some papers

"Hey...so...uh..." Phoenix coughs out, voice scratchy from his most recent line repetitions. It's a small mistake, not unsalvageable. All he has to do is stick to the script. Stick to the script. Stick... His eyes flick down to his note cards. He swears he’d printed them in his best penmanship, atop one of the library's extra premium desks, but everything is spinning and he feels faintly like he's going to throw up. "Did you uh," he starts, letters swirling in his eyes. "Did...you fall out of heaven...?" Genius prosecutor-in-training Miles Edgeworth regards him with a blank stare. Phoenix thinks now would be an opportune time for him to locate the nearest possible bridge and promptly jump off of it. - The joys and woes (mostly woes) of being in love, as told by BratFeen.

misc commentary/musings under the cut :)

the way i wrote feenie inner monologue and narration parallels my informal writing style, so writing his freak outs weren't challenging. consciously changing sentence structures/verbiage to be more or less extra, on the other hand, totally was.

the bulk of my pain came from writing fluff in the first place, stumbling through dialogue exchanges (as always), and attempting larry dialogue...all of which i honestly think i failed at pretty badly HAHA. who cares tho? it's my work!

bratfeen is one of my favorite narumitsu "eras" if you will. i've always wanted to write them. i didn't know the opportunity would come so soon (and at my expense considering i still have a zine fic to finalize for a diff fandom), but i took the shot. the full fic was written over the course of a day which i do not recommend anyone experience. i was on a writing hiatus for months and wrote 8k words as soon as i came back. do you see why i burnt out in the first place?

the easiest part about writing bratfeen is that none of the things i write are exaggerated for the purpose of carrying the plot forward. feenie believing that bratworth is better of a human being than everyone makes him out to be? sounds about right. feenie insisting to others that miles is the best thing since grilled cheese? his raging savior complex says that's likely to occur. feenie fumbling the bag because he thinks miles is the prettiest thing he's ever seen? yeah, 20 y/o feenie would! feenie shoving the asshole who talked shit abt miles? we saw the exact same thing with doug swallow (and we all know how that ended...). all of it is in line w his character. also miles being a try hard. that's a given.

i am hoping i can showcase more of my technical skill aka the angst writer in me with my next work, though i've been closely following fictober (haven't been publishing because, again, zine fic obligations) and have plenty of angsty fics stored in my drafts. i hope you enjoy my poor attempt at humor and fluff. may i muster the strength to finish the rest of my zine fic...please...

But even better Bonding over pieces they both hate and being bitchy little haters together. I have an idea I think I'm going to put in my fic of them going to a bad art film in Germany and being the only people in there and everyone joking that it would be the perfect time to make out but in reality they instead just spend the entire film complaining about it to each other. Like

Miles:you are so fortunate you don't understand what complete nonsense is passing for dialogue in this atrocity against good taste

Phoenix: I can only imagine. The shot composition is terrible. I have no idea who let this cinematography hold a camera.

Miles: did a child make this? I would expect Trucy could come up with a more compelling plot

Phoenix: I know so many artists who would kill for a budget like this. The director must have connections

Miles (googles the directors name): His father a famous producer. I've liked some of his past work, clearly he didn't pass on any of his talents

Manfred von Karma!

Thank you for the ask <3 (to every else who sent me a character ask, I'm working on it :)

First impression

I actually never hated him or had strong feelings about him. I was introduced to AA through narumitsu fanfic but I knew I wanted to play the games so I avoided everything with spoilers, including everything Manfred. I guess I just thought of him vaguely as a villain and Miles' mentor/father figure.

Impression now

He's one of my favorite Ace Attorney characters. I have him at 4th but honestly, maybe he's 3rd now?? I have developed an attachment to this ridiculous evil man. I love him so much. I wish there was more canon content of him, but I think he's an interesting character with a lot of room for nuance.

Favorite moment

He doesn't really have many canon moments (and I haven't played AAI). But probably when he gloated Phoenix into cross-examining Polly the parrot and it's implied that he witness-coached a parrot. Manfred, you are an insane person.

Idea for a story

I just want to see a story where Manfred is force-fed a redemption arc. Like for example a no DL-6 AU where Gregory manages to get a Manfred properly investigated for forging evidence. But to ensure he doesn't get another penalty, Manfred tries to frame another prosecutor to throw Gregory off his trail.

Only, Manfred finds out that the person he is framing is actually guilty of forging evidence. Manfred has to follow through with his plan and gets dragged into working with Gregory. Gregory is surprised but grateful that Manfred has been so helpful in weeding out corruption in the prosecutor's office, and wants to befriend/ally with Manfred. Manfred is seething with hatred. (Oh and eventual Shingou :)

Unpopular opinion

Manfred as a character deserves a lot more nuance. There's... a lot to talk about but these are the three main things I have a strong opinion on:

1) He was a flawed parent and I think it's more interesting to explore those flaws than to just label him abusive for the sake of villainizing him.

2) It does not makes sense for Manfred to be sexist/homophobic/etc. Simply because I don't think he cares enough to hate a group of people like that. He is very rational, efficient, and his perfectionism is focused on his prosecuting career. If anything, he discriminates against defense attorneys (lmao).

3) Manfred didn't brainwash or force Miles into becoming a prosecutor. I'm sure Manfred was influential but Miles had his own reason to be a prosecutor that stemmed from DL-6. Miles was also always a perfectionist (the paper cranes thing) and the von Karma family brand of perfectionism just amplified it.

Favorite relationship

Shingou!! <3 (Gregory Edgeworth/Manfred von Karma)

Defense attorney/prosecutor ship, toxic enemies to lovers, doomed romance, or super slowburn (if no DL-6 AU), bitter courtroom rivals turned bickering old married couple (who still duke it out in court), co-parenting Miles and Franziska (before officially getting together).

Favorite headcanon

Manfred did love Franziska and Miles (in his own way). Regarding Miles, Manfred saw him as a symbol of his failures (the penalty Gregory gave him and the shot in his shoulder). So Manfred struggled a lot when he began to actually care about Miles. When Miles's perfect record was broken, Manfred saw it as a threat to his own perfection. (I hope that makes sense. I do need to think about this more to solidify the headcanon. I just love complicated von Karma family dynamics)

As for my favorite fic to write I'd say it was one of the matchablossom from sk8 I wrote, Through ink to your heart

It's a tattoo parlor AU, Kaoru as a tattoo artist, where they meet for the first time and pine like the idiots they are. I really enjoyed reading up about the process of making tattoos and the aftercare. It was also one of those fics where I firstly wrote for myself since I had a craving for this idea, and it is the longest fic I've ever written! I've come so far from writing very short one-shots...
