“Together we can turn the page and start a new tale!”
FULL NAME: Princess Marisa Soto BASED ON: Marisa (Elena of Avalor) FACE CLAIM: Maite Perroni PRONOUNS: She/her BIRTHDAY: November 4, 1990 CURRENT STATUS: Closed
Character Information
A siren’s legend has always been the sinking of travelers ships. Innocent people drowned and taken from their families. But that legend was written by humans who feared for their lives. Who tried to warn their children from going too far out to sea. If you asked a siren their legend was their voices used to save themselves, to protect those that couldn’t.
If you asked Marisa, Princess of the Coronado pod, a siren’s legend was simply terrifying.
Marisa had always been afraid of what she might do, should she be in danger. Could she really sing an attacker into drowning if it was her life or theirs? She wished she could just be a regular mermaid, or selkie, or any other mermaid-like creature whose existence wasn’t so intimately tied to death.
She was relieved when her parents decreed that their pod of sirens were to stop hurting humans, even while her twin brother was mired in rage over the decision. She wanted to live peacefully, even suggested the Coronado pod strengthen their relations with the Avalor Pod, home to her friend Naomi, but her parents shot her down. Seems the decree they made was as liberal as they planned to be.
Still, Marisa was curious about the Avalor pod, and would venture closer to Avalor’s shore to interact with them. It was through a group of them that had originally come from Anacapa Island that Marisa had first learned English.
When the Avaloran Coup of 2015 occured, and Marisa’s friends from the Avalor pod recounted horrors they both saw and heard about secondhand, the siren princess was enraged. And she fought back alongside them, and as she met humans from Avalor? She began to care for them too and fought tooth and nail for a land that wasn’t hers, until her father, King Pescoro, sent members of the Reef Guard after her. They practically had to drag her home kicking and screaming.
Marisa’s intrigue and love of humans didn’t fizzle out, but grew. So when her parents told her they’d allow her to explore some of the human world - IF Marzel went with her and IF it was far from Avalor? She had no choice but to take them up on it.
She was tasting freedom, wasn’t she?
✓  Confident, determined, positive

Love Potion Extravaganza Bonus
Thanks as always to @pizzansunshine for editing what I promise to be the final of the love potion extravaganza. As I said before, I wanted to include the sirenas. And thanks to Crazy Ex Gf releasing one last song on love, it inspired me to write this. As you can guess from the song, Love is not a game https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=G9VnIL33TvI There is plenty of bets. Hope y’all enjoy.
Marisa ran to the post office of Buena Vista, waving frantically to the elderly post man who was shifting through his bag, “Hi! Hello! Is there anything for us? It would be in a royal document sealed with the Avaloran crest and-”
“Sí Princesa, I know what document you are waiting for. You have been stopping by every morning and afternoon to see if it has arrived.” The postman said smoothing his grey mustache in a torturously slow fashion instead of looking at his letters for a document for her.
“Well?” Marisa asked eagerly, clasping her hands together in an effort to keep from grabbing his bag and looking through the letters herself.
“No, no letters this morning from the central area. Try again in the afternoon.” The postman shrugged, “Oh but here are the postcards you wanted.”
He handed three blank postcards with dazzling images of Cariza, Tir ná Nög and Brazendale.
How she would love to visit!
Ever since the peace treaty was signed between the Avalorans and the Sirenas and the subsequent Royal Retreat Marzel attended, her parents had become more open to the idea of travelling around to another sea and visiting. So Marisa started planning the trip by asking the postman for postcards of other kingdoms so they would get to see what they looked like today. Mom had told them stories of what they were like when she was young but she had only heard rumors of what they were like, she had mainly resided in Avalor when she was human and only visited Cordóba once.
From the postcards she had so far, Marisa was more partial to visiting Napurna it looked gorgeous with the image of the Salt Sea and Marzel had said King Raj was a very bubbly fellow to be with.
But despite the postcards, it didn’t make up for the loss of curiosity and excitement she had for the Avaloran’s upcoming letter.
Elena had had a trade meeting recently between Paraíso and Cordóba that almost ended in chaos thanks to Carla Delgado setting off a love potion through the town. Elena had been sending episodic letters about the entire situation, who fell in love with who, how they acted, what Carla had been doing, etc. and they had just arrived at the second to last letter where everyone drank the antidote and was back to normal even though Carla escaped.
Elena had finished the letter promising that her last letter would detail what had come out of the circumstances and Marisa was dying to know!
“Wow, Marisa,” Marzel panted, running up next to her to rest his arm on her shoulder, “Slow down. You have a lot more practice on legs than me. You’re too fast.”
“Here’s your hat señor,” the postman broke in between them to hand Marzel the fedora he requested. Elena had also been giving him fashion advice for how to blend in with humans and he had been obediently ordering them from local stores as she had suggested. Last week’s letter told him to get a fedora and get rid of the loud purple sombrero and feather hat that he had been keeping in his room.
“Cool!” Marzel spun the rim of the snazzy black fedora on his head, and almost missed hearing Marisa’s jibe.
“I’m not that fast on legs. You’re just clumsy.” Marisa retorted narrowly avoided the jab Marzel aimed at her ribs for the insult.
Before Marzel could fire back at her with his own comment on her walking skills, Marisa changed the subject to the important topic, “No letter this morning.”
“Come on!” Marzel cried, “I need to know if Elena ended up with Gabe!”
“Gabe?” Marisa wrinkled her nose as they turned to walk back through town to the seashore, “Do you not know, Elena? She’s obviously into Mateo. She’s going to tell us that they are dating right now. I know it.”
“She was only into Mateo because of the love spell.” Marzel gave her a condescending look.
“No! The love spell paired people who had some feelings for each other! That’s why she was all over Mateo. Why would she choose Gabe after all that anyway?” Marisa argued.
“The answer is threefold.” Marzel jabbed the air with his finger assuming his obnoxious fancy voice, “One, she felt bad for rejecting him-”
“Because she was hurting his feelings and she felt that she had no time for dating.” Marisa interrupted.
“She felt bad for rejecting him because she felt like she had to not because she wanted to. Two, they balance each other out. He’s the calm to her impulsivity. He’s knows the laws, she makes the laws.”
“Hmm... sort of like how you balance me out, Brother?” Marisa pointed out, exaggeratingly tapping her finger against her chin.
“Let me finish. And number three, they balance each other out as pointed out in number two.” Marzel finished proudly crossing his arms.
“So your argument is twofold.” Marisa smirked, knowing her comment was riling him up.
“It’s threefold.” “Twofold.”
“Threefold.” “Threefold.”
“Twofold-argh!” Marzel cursed when Marisa’s switch-up caused him to accept her answer.” Fine then, why do you think Elena is into Mateo?”
“You should have seen them together after Elena defeated Shuriki. He was hanging onto her every word to make sure she was okay.”
“Sounds like a good friendship to me.” Marzel interrupted mocking her voice from her earlier comment but Marisa ignored him.
“They danced together at the party. And I swear when Elena put on the kelp shirt, she took a peak at Mateo..”
“Psshh that did not happen.” Marzel scoffed.
“You weren’t there.” Marisa crossed her arms, “I saw it with my own eyes.”
“No way. That’s not enough evidence. Why wouldn’t Elena like Gabe? He has it all. Good looks, he’s cautious, he has excellent fighting skills, he’s charming, the girls like him..”
“Are you rooting for him because he’s like you? Biased much.” Marisa mocked.
“What are you two arguing about?” Cuco asked as the sirenas approached the shore where Cuco, Ocho and Daria were waiting.
“Whether Elena will end up with Gabe or Mateo.” Marisa answered, emphasizing Mateo’s name. They knew what they were talking about since the royal family plus they had been eagerly reading the letters during lunch and dinnertime.
“That’s great.” Daria snapped curtly as to leave no room to continue the conversation, “Marzel, your dad wants to go over some public relations topic with you, and Marisa, you have to keep your promise to help the children’s singing group. It’s at lunchtime, but you insist on playing with them beforehand so you better get going now.”
Due to her role in helping Saloso and the rest malandros almost invade Coronado and the ensuing rescue, King Pescoro had demoted Daria’s army commander status to being a personal guard for the siblings for the time being. Which was for the best because with the human-sirena peace treaty, there was no need for an army commander unless they were suddenly called to war again.
Now Daria spent her day hounding them to keep on schedule and make sure they...technically Marisa... did not try to sneak off to the mainland when they were needed elsewhere for lessons or other obligations. She took the job as seriously as she took her last position, but they had all noticed that Daria mellowed out a little bit too. They heard her make a joke! It had only happened once though because the event had surprised Marisa so much that she nearly choked on her kelp taco.
“What about Alonso?” Cuco pointed out completely ignoring Daria’s instructions for them to head back to Coronado.
“What about him?” The siblings cocked their heads to the side in unison.
“Elena and Alonso.” Cuco said as if that cleared things up.
“Elena and Alonso are not here. Let’s get going.” Ocho commanded.
“No. No. I can’t picture Elena and Alonso together.” Marzel laughed,
“Remember that part where he sang that awful song to Naomi. And he slept with the malvago. No way would Elena date a guy like him.”
“You can finish this conversation later. You have duties to attend to.” Daria reminded them, impatiently slapping her fin against the water.
“Alonso showed no interest in her. With or without the love potion.” Marisa argued with the large hippocampus.
“But who knows. Maybe they both had a change of heart after the love potion. He was going all over the place because he had no true love. Maybe Elena is the one for him. The prince and the princess” Cuco sighed dreamily.
“No.” Marisa and Marzel insisted in unison.
“It’s Mateo.” “It’s Gabe.”
“Will you two stop? Elena is going to say she is dating Mateo in her next letter. Now let’s go do important things then speculate about your friend’s love life. Marzel, take off that hat, we’re leaving.” Daria finished the argument for them.
“What? No you can’t think it’s Mateo too!” Marzel cried, completely ignoring her order to take off his fedora.
Daria rolled her eyes, “It’s obvious. They look at each other with complete trust whenever I saw them interact. Love is just adding tenderness to the equation.”
“No-but-no. What do you know about love?” Marzel shot back.
“I know a lot more about love, and war, and life than you do.” Daria raised an eyebrow in challenge.
“Hmm then you’re willing to put your money where your mouth is? I bet 50 sand dollars plus 3 gold doubloons that Elena ends up with Gabe.” Marzel challenged, slipping some golden doubloons from his leggings to hold up.
“I’ll bet 100 sand dollars.” Daria answered with a smirk at Marzel’s nervous gulp.
“105.” Marzel said.
“Oh oh I wanna get in this too. I’d give you 20 doubloons if you’re right. No sand dollars.” Ocho scooched up with get on top of Daria’s shoulder.
“Guys? I don’t know if we should do this. It’s one thing to debate, but betting?” Marisa said, nervously listening to the escalating numbers.
“10 sand dollars that she ends up with Alonso.” Cuco added.
“30 doubloons that if you’re right, she’ll dump him within a week.” Marzel scowled.
“I say 134 sand dollars that Alonso would get bored before Elena would dump him, and so dump her.” Daria contested.
“This is just getting mean.” Marisa vocalized as the one sound of reason but to no avail.
“Elena would dump Gabe. Who wants to bet 10 doubloons that Elena dumps Gabe?” Ocho hollered.
“Guys.”
“Elena dumps Mateo.”
“Eight sand dollars plus three copper doubloons.”
“Mateo dumps Elena!”
“Four doubloons.”
“They get married.”
“They’ll divorce.”
“Alonso would so cheat on her.”
“300 sand dollars.”
“Eighteen sand dollars.”
“GUYS!” Marisa yelled, freezing everyone in the middle of their frenzied betting.
Marisa walked across the shoreline looking at each of them square in the eye as she sang, “How dare you play with love? Have you no decency?
Love is what created him, and him, and her, and me.
How dare you play with love?
Is nothing sacred to you?”
Marzel and Cuco looked guiltily to the ground, Daria stared stonily ahead but tensley rubbed the doubloons in her hands, Ocho scowled.
“Love is what unites me and you and him and her and him and him and me as well.”
Marisa stared at them and their ill-at-ease postures before letting them off the hook.
“JK LOL!”
The four stared at her in confusion. Both from the odd human slang Naomi had taught her and for her sudden change of heart.
“I want in on this too. But can we be discreet about it? It feels wrong and our parents would probably say it’s wrong to place bets on Elena’s love life... It’s just I have a good feeling that I’m going to win!” Marisa squealed, holding up a sand dollar her brother dropped on the sand, “Let's do this!”
They all immediately scrambled to gather up their currencies so no straying beach goers would find them. They had decided the copper doubloons would be used for any Mateo bets since it was the closest to the color red. Silver would be Gabe and Alonso was gold.
Meanwhile Marisa began to hum a jaunty tune, “Love's not a game, love's not a game.
None of us would ever say love's a game.
That would be bad, you can be sure-a.”
“But I'm in the mood to wear this cool fedora,” Marzel rhymed before Daria snatched it off his head.
Marisa and Marzel jumped into the water to transform to their normal form, “Love's not a game, love's not a game. We would never play with love like it's a game.”
Ocho swam up next to Cuco, unofficial racing him to the next rock, “But if we did...”
Cuco winked, “And that would be wrong.”
They crowed together as they whipped around the kelp beds, “We'd put 30 doubloons down that Gabe has the biggest schlong.”
Marisa raised her eyebrows at that image but shrugged, “Oh, interesting, I'll double that!”
Daria put her nose in the air, “I'll triple that!”
Marisa took up the next chorus as they swam through the shipwreck graveyard, “Love is not sirenas swimming down courses. They're our dear friends, they are not seahorses.”
Cuoco galloped ahead of her, “Their love is pure, groom meets bride,”
“So we'd never soil it with a death pool on the side,” Ocho added nudging Marzel who flinched at Marisa’s “that-is-so-wrong” glare.
Daria handed Ocho a sand dollar, “Alonso, age 52, parasailing accident.”
Ocho gasped, “That's so smart. Same.”
Marisa shook her head at that sick bet even though she kind could see it happen. Marzel started the next line of their song, “Love's an endgame, but it's not a game.”
“Our mouths keep saying that, but our hands need change,” Marisa admitted when she placed an IOU for 60 sand dollars and a pound of doubloons with Cuco that if Mateo and Elena got married in the future, Mateo would be the one to propose.
“Put 30 on red, poetically...For red's the color of a heart that beats free.”
“Red is also Mateo. It's going to be Mateo.” Daria yelled as she zoomed off ahead at the sight of the coral alarms so she could recheck them.
The closer they approached the castle, the more jittery Marisa got. It was like being near the presence of her parents reminded her how wrong this was. She looked to her side and saw that Marzel had a similar anxious expression. She swam up next to him, suddenly wishing to stop the group so she could return her bet money.
“We definitely shouldn't do this,
We definitely shouldn't do this.
This is bad, this is bad,
We're going to hell, this is bad.”
Yet the moment they arrived at the palace Marisa and Marzel’s worries dissipated. They were immediately whisked off to their respective duties and temporarily forgot about their betting and their money until dinner time came.
“Marisa, do you want to see if Princess Elena’s letter arrived yet?” Queen Camila said nonchalantly, but the way her tail twitched underneath their dinner table signaled that she was a lot more excited than she let on about hearing the conclusion to the long saga.
Marisa hesitated for a second when she heard her father come swimming up eagerly, “Is the letter here? Did Elena end up with Gabe?”
“No, honey. There’s no letter about Elena not ending up with Gabe.” Queen Camila corrected with a soft hand on his.
The moment that clinched it was when Marisa spotted her mom mouth, “It’s going to be Mateo,” and her dad shook his head patronizingly.
“Marzel, Daria, Ocho, Cuco, we’re going to see if there is a letter!” Marisa whooped, not even looking behind her to see if the others were following.
When Marzel was able to catch up to her Marisa sheepishly turned to him to say, “Uh um can I get in on the Alonso parasailing bet. I think it’s very likely to happen.”
“Oh that’s off. We all agreed that Alonso is likely to die parasailing.” Marzel waved it off dismissively.
Marisa giggled a little at the thought that was the one bet they could all agree on. Then she got back on task to swimming as fast as she could.
They were going to find their answer in a matter of moments. Hopefully today!
Once they reached the shores, Marisa and Marzel jumped up, crashing into each other once they were on the sandy ground. Heads bumping, but too animated to feel the pain they raced to the town’s post office as Ocho yelled behind them, “Don’t open it without us!”
Marisa was the one who arrived at the office first after Marzel tripped over an old lady’s cane and she nearly knocked over the elderly postman herself.
“Steady there, señorita.” The postman warned, chuckling grittily, “I have what you wish.”
“YES!” Marisa prompting Marzel to run faster in her direction.
“Thankyouthankyousomuch!” Marisa babbled hugging the man before ripping the document from his hands.
As she turned the corner, she crashed into Marzel turning the world upside down with dancing starfish around her head.
“IS THIS IT?” Marzel crowed in amazement, taking the document reverently from her, earning the disapproving glare of a man with a baby at his loudness.
“YES IT IS!” Marisa screeched, grabbing it back from him. The creamy white document had a red seal of a jaquin’s head. It may have been her imagination but it just seemed to glow and sparkly like the gold doubloons and sand dollars she was bound to collect after they read it.
“SHHHHH!” The man shushed them.
The siblings scrambled to their feet and ran to the shore leaping and singing excitedly.
“Love's not a game, love's not a game.
That being said, let's make it rain!
While Cupid descends from above...”
“They have it! They have it! I’m going to be rich!” Ocho shook Cucoa’s shoulders with exhilaration and even stone-faced Daria was smiling in anticipation.
“Can you even spend it?” Cuco innocently asked the octopus earning a smack on the cheek from the irate sea creature.
Marisa and Marzel knelt down to the knees and sang their song as they slowly opened the letter. “The group mind has decided to bet on love!”
The song began to grow in volume as the three others joined in repeating the refrain, “Love's not a game, love's not a game,
Love's not a game!”
Marisa cracked open the seal and Marzel slipped out the letter, “Alonso should be wary of parasails!”
They all scanned the letter, reading as fast as their eyes could possibly go. Marisa was skimming so quickly that she reached the “Love, Elena” part without even understanding what she had read and nervously went back to the beginning to read again.
Nothing was jumping out at her. No Mateo or Gabe or love.
Was it possible that Elena ended up with no one?
The nagging guilty feeling that Marisa had forgotten came back again to form a pit in her stomach. They all had gotten so caught up in her love life, they had forgotten the true sight of it all. A love potion did not mean Elena was going to make it a big focus of her life from now on. She had other things to do, a kingdom to run and they were busy making bets on a part of her life that was only hers alone to care about.
It wasn’t even like they cared about Elena’s love life for the sake of her happiness, they just wanted to get money out of the bets.
No, this disappointment served them right.
“What?” Ocho screeched indignantly, “This is useless. It has nothing!”
“She-she didn’t end up with anyone?” Marzel moaned disappointedly.
Marisa looked frantically at the parchment even at the little side bars to see if there was any doodles or invisible words, but nothing!
“Wait!” Daria grabbed the paper ad flipped it to the back.
“And Mateo?”
Marisa snatched it back, “Love Elena” she flipped it to the back, “And Mateo! With a heart next to. I think they’re together.”
All those regretful feelings about how wrong Marisa felt it was to bet on Elena’s love life disappeared with a snap. She’d won! She was getting so much money! She had bragging rights over her brother! Yes!!
“Oh goodness, they’re together. That means I’m right! HA, I’M RIGHT!”
“Noooo!” Marzel and Cuco yelled out when Marisa began her celebratory dance, high fiving Daria and all of Ocho’s tentacles.
“Pay up!” Ocho sing-songed, gesturing to Cuco.
“Fine” Marzel grumbled handing each of them two sand dollars, “I’ll give the rest to you later. So you can give it back to me when they break up.”
“There not breaking up.” Marisa laughed, “Also I hate to say it, but I told you so. “No you’re not.” Marzel rolled his eyes, huffing with outrage at being proven wrong.
“Nope cause I’m rich!” Marisa cheered and then booped Marzel on the nose, “Aww don’t get all pouty just because I’m better at matters of the heart than you.”
With that final smug comment on her victory, Marisa leapt into the water to go tell her mother the fabulous news.

Bookworm Season
Tumblr media
reading is a healthy habit everyone should take up, not only does it expand your vocabulary scientists say it strengthens memory, concentration and exercises the brain, it may even help you live longer. although in our youth reading is compulsory, the excitement surrounding it can wear off, especially after your brain develops and learning styles are embedded, making it hard for visual learners to concentrate on a book.
if you are a visual learner, there are ways to combat this whilst still strengthening the connections of your brain; setting a daily task to read for at least 10 minutes, preferably before you sleep, will help with routine alongside mood. likewise, magazines are a great option, as they have both the visual side and minimal text, with a wide range of topics.
futhermore, the magazines i have selected are all environmentally friendly, with eco-friendly packaging, as for the books, many can be bought second hand via Amazon or Ebay.
and so with that being said here are some of my favourite magazines and book recommendations:

Song of the Sirenas Review 2/4
Again, muchas gracias to everyone who helped me with the visual aspects of the movie-including my best friend, Rebecca and DisneyNerd andDisPrincess3!  I also wanna give a big thank you to the hosts of the MagicWithIn podcast!
Here is the second part of my Song of the Sirenas review!  I hope everyone enjoys it!
  Part 2
When we last left our girl, her familia, girlfriend and amigas, they were travelling to nueva vista to visit a cousin who hadn’t contacted them since Elena was released from the amulet and Isa and their abuelos from the painting.  Hmmm, there’s no way this could go wrong…
Arriving in Nueva vista, Elena and co hear welcome bells.  They admire the palace and Elena is happy they have finally arrived.  Just wait a few hours, Elena.  You’ll be wishing you had declined Christobal’s invitation.  A few miles away, the sound attracts the attention of Shuriki and her minions.  Shuriki is annoyed and demands to know what the sound is.  Fiero explains and deduces Elena must have arrived.  Shuriki declares this will be a familia vacation the crown princesa will never forget.
Back outside the castle, Elena, her familia, girlfriend and friends are greeted by Christobal.  Elena receives flowers and is shocked to see how her cousin has aged.  She starts to remark on it when Esteban throws in a jab while throwing Elena under the carriage in the process.  Thankfully, Christobal takes it like a champ.  Esteban, they can still leave you in nueva vista when they go home.  Just keep that in mind, dude.  Elena is swept up into a hug and spun around by her cousin.  She tells him she missed him, and he returns the sentiment.  He explains they’re throwing a festival de liberdad to honor Elena for defeating Shuriki.  Elena painfully reveals the truth about Shuriki still being alive.  Elena is assured by her primo that she has her familia to support her.  They sing a song about times past and how they’re happy to be together now, “Familia Forever.”  Too bad Christobal is lying through his teeth.  Afterwards, they all sit down to a feast.  Elena sits next to Naomi, hoping to patch things up with her girlfriend.  Christobal asks about their voyage.  Esteban doesn’t waste any time in telling their cousin about their run in with the sirenas.  Christobal asks if they attacked their ship.  Naomi answers confidently,  “They were about to!”  Elena gently puts a hand on her girlfriend’s shoulder in a gesture of forgiveness and counters with,  “We don’t know that.  I don’t remember them ever being a problem when I visited.”  Christobal tells her that’s because her parents protected her from the truth.  He explains that his Papa, Elena’s Tio was aboard a ship that was capsized by sirenas.  Elena is surprised and saddened by the news.  Christobal vows that if he could, he’d lock every single sirena up in the tower.  Keep that in mind for later, guys.  He then offers everyone a snack.  Don’t eat it!  It’s probably poisoned!
Meanwhile, we go back under the waves to Coronado, Marisa and Marzel’s home.  They enter the palace and the throne room, Marisa calling out to their father.  King Pescoro wastes no time in revealing to his children that he knows what happened on the surface thanks to Daria, their reef commander.  Marisa confirms it, but then pleads her case pretty well.  She explains the princesa of Avalor was aboard the ship and she thinks she would listen.  Daria counters Marisa’s proposal of attempted peace with Humans by saying,  “After her guards harpoon us.”  Marisa rebuffs Daria’s fears with,  “What if her guards weren’t around?  After all these years of conflict, isn’t it worth a try?”  King Pescoro concedes that Marisa’s heart is in the right place, it always is.  “But heart alone cannot change the world.”  Marisa tries again, but her father firmly tells her to leave it alone, calling her mija in the process.  “For your own good.”  Marisa nods, but then appeals to her mother, reminding her that she was once Human herself.  “You know more than anyone how much we have in common with them.”  Queen Camilla takes a gentler approach with her daughter.  “If I thought it were possible to make amends with humans, I’d try.  But I know them too well.”  She also warns Marisa to stay away from Humans and their ships.  Marisa nods, frowning in defeat.  Before leaving, Daria’s octopus’ friend, Ocho, waves at the teens as though saying,  “Bye-bye!”  LOL!  The siblings swim out of the throne room, Marzel jabbing at Marisa,  “I hate to say I Told you so.”  Marisa, being the cooler sibling, comes back with  “No you don’t.”  she then declares she’s going to talk to Elena anyway.  Marzel reminds her of their father’s warning, but Marisa dismisses him by saying,  “I respectfully disagree.”  With that, she swims off.  Marzel sighs in frustration and swims after her to make sure she doesn’t get hurt.  In doing this, he demonstrates why I Love him so much!  While Marisa is my favorite of the sirena siblings, I really love them both.
I wanna take a second and talk about King Pescoro.  I appreciate how Silvia and Rachel made him different from another mer-king and father we know.  He didn’t scream or shout at Marisa after finding out she disobeyed him.  He was firm yet loving in the way he told her to leave well enough alone.  It’s clear he loves her and just wants to keep her safe.  It says a lot that he doesn’t scream and alienate her from coming to him in the future.  That’s the mark of a good parent.
Meanwhile, Shuriki and Fiero are pouring over a map when Victor and Carla arrive on a very familiar looking horse according to my sighted friends.  Let’s think…did they stop over in Cordoba and steal Pedro?  I could so see Carla using her female whiles to persuade Alonzo to lend them his horse.  Carla complains to Shuriki about the time it took to get there due to the sorceress keeping Cruz to herself, but she is quickly shut down by her father.  I so can’t wait for Carla to turn on him!  Fiero declares now that they’re all there, they can get started.
We switch to the skies where Skylar, Luna and Migs are flying across the kingdom.  Skylar exclaims he can’t wait to surprise Elena.  They run into Shuriki and go to warn Elena she’s there.  Elena thinks they should postpone the parranda, but Christobal disagrees.  He assures her she’ll be safe.  Elena reluctantly agrees but decides to scout the parade route.  Mateo offers to go with her and I groan.  Elena can handle herself.  She has her scepter.  Fortunately, Elena is soon alone on the trail.  She is walking along the canals when all of a sudden, her attention is caught by singing.  Her eyes glow blue and she starts walking in a trance towards the ocean’s edge.  Once there, it’s revealed Marisa is the one using her power of song to guide Elena to where she is.  Once Elena reaches her destination, Marisa releases her from the trance.  This proves Marisa has control and restraint.  Elena comes out of it dizzy and puts a hand to her forehead.  Glancing down, she gasps upon seeing Marisa, along with Marzel and the horse dude.  Elena raises her scepter and threatens to use it.  Marisa tells her not to be afraid and introduces herself, her brother and the seahorse dude.  She explains they just wanna talk to her.  Pulling herself out of the water, her fins turn into legs seconds later, as do her brother’s.  Elena is surprised and asks if all sirenas can do that.  Marisa reveals just her and Marzel have that capability.  Marisa almost falls upon walking and Elena catches her.  Marisa explains she hasn’t been on legs in a long time.  Marzel scoffs and asks his sister “What’s so hard about walk…”  before promptly falling backwards into a barrel.  What’s that saying?  Pride goeth before the fall, buddy.  Marzel puts on a cool air to save face and swiftly pulls a bucket off of his head.  Elena asks what Marisa wants to talk to her about.  Marisa is completely honest in her explanation, which makes me love her all the more.  She doesn’t try to paint herself or the rest of the sirenas in a good light.  She’s honest and forthcoming with the terrible things they have done, while at the same time regretful.  Through a beautiful and powerful song called “A New Tale,”  Marisa reveals her story while pleading with Elena to help her end the fighting and bring peace between Humans and sirenas.  Can I Love Marisa any more than I already do?  YES!  This song is very timely for today’s world.  Just go on youtube and give it a listen-especially the chorus.  Once Marisa is done singing, she asks for Elena’s help, but our girl is hesitant and rightfully so.  I’m glad Silvia and Rachel took this route.  It makes Elena even more relatable.  Elena explains about her tio and Marisa is sympathetic, but again also honest with her answer.  “I wish I could undo the past, but all I can do is give you my promise that those days are long gone.”  Elena guardedly believes her but lets her know they have to convince Christobal since he’s in charge of nueva vista.  Marisa encourages Elena to bring Christobal to the canals, so she can convince him.  Elena agrees and goes to get him.  After explaining to both of her primos what happened outside, she pleads with Christobal to hear Marisa out.  He agrees.  This is where I started getting the feeling that Christobal wasn’t all he seemed.  Arriving back at the canals, Elena advises the guards to stay back so they don’t scare the sirenas off.  Calling out to Marisa and Marzel, she is relieved when they appear.  She introduces them to Christobal.  Marisa holds out her hand in greeting and my heart breaks while simultaneously skipping a beat bc I knew something bad was about to happen.  Sure enough, Christobal’s true colors are revealed when he orders his guards to capture the sirena siblings!  Elena protests, ordering him to stop!  Again, someone else plainly ignores her direct order.  Seeing this, Elena takes matters into her own hands.  As a net traps Marisa, Elena frees her, allowing Marisa to swim to safety and catch up with Marzel.  Once both sirena siblings are out of harms way,  Elena rounds on her primo.  Our girl is taking no prisoners or excuses!  She is royally pissed off and rightly so!  She demands to know why Christobal tried to capture Marisa and Marzel.  She reminds him the sirenas came to discuss peace.  Christobal in turn reminds her that sirenas lie to which Elena defends her new friends by saying,  “I don’t think that’s what they were trying to do!”  Christobal states that she just met them, and he’s dealt with them his whole life.  He reminds her of his father and says he doesn’t want to lose her too, giving her a hug in the process.  Elena begrudgingly tells him she understands and follows him back to the palace. I wanna stop here and point something out.  Elena heard Christobal verbalize his desire to lock every sirena up, but yet she took him to meet two innocent sirenas?  Really, Elena.  I’ll give her a pass here bc she probably thought her primo was just angry and would calm down and see reason in time. Meanwhile, back under the waves, Marzel angrily states that Elena set them up.  Marisa defends her new amiga, reminding her hermano Elena looked just as surprised as them.  Marzel snaps at his Hermana to grow up!  “Humans hate our kind and always will!”  With that, he swims away.
Meanwhile, later that night, Elena is tossing and turning and whimpering.  She’s clearly feeling guilty for what happened to Marisa and her brother.  I just wanna hug her!  Miel, it wasn’t your fault.  Both of your primos are selfish, pig headed jerks!  Soon you might discover you have distant familia-including a new prima and primo who will NEVER hurt you like Christobal and Esteban. The day of the water parranda has arrived.  Elena is trying to be upbeat for Isa, but she isn’t successful.  Our poor girl is extremely tired, scared to face Shuriki again, along with worrying about Marisa and Marzel.  Her grandmother asks her if everything’s okay, to which Elena lies and says she’s fine.  Christobal announces as the guest of honor, Elena will ride on the last float.  Gabe insists Elena ride with him, Naomi and Mateo in case something happens.  Christobal reluctantly agrees.  He then tells them not to get in the way of the people seeing their princess.  Elena, just hit him with your scepter.  Isabel observes that it seems like the whole city showed up.  She looks so excited and it’s sweet!  Elena tells Naomi and the others they need to keep a sharp look out for Shuriki.  Mateo assures her if the sorceress is here, they’ll spot her.  Unless Mateo spends the whole time looking for sirenas!  As the floats start to move, we see Elena has someone looking out for her.  Marisa watches and sighs sadly as the floats continue down the canals.  I have a feeling she is returning the kindness Elena extended to her the day before.  I was wrong, it is possible for me to love Marisa even more than I did before!
Soon after the parranda gets underway, Elena is shocked to see several citizens dressed up as Shuriki!  Naomi tries to reassure her future wife that the costumes are for the parade.  Okay, Naomi, you get one point from me for effort.  Mateo asks how they’re going to find the real Shuriki and I roll my eyes.  Uh, maybe looking for someone with her appearance, sitting on a jaquin.  And LOL!  Suddenly, Gabe spots Victor and Carla in the crowd.  And this is where I get on Gabe a little.  He just said no more than five minutes ago he wanted Elena with him in case anything happened.  Clearly something’s happening, and he leaves her on her own.  She can handle herself and has her scepter, but I digress.  Elena, being the awesome leader she is tries to remain calm, so she doesn’t cause city wide panic.  Suddenly, Christobal shoots a cannon of confetti, some of it gets in Elena’s eyes.  A few seconds later, the person driving the float veers off course.  Elena asks why they’re turning into a side canal and gets no reply.  Once the float stops, the driver jumps off, leaving Elena alone.  It isn’t long before Fiero appears, followed by the last person our girl wants to see.  Shuriki informs Elena that her appearance is no mask while whipping out the scepter of night.  Elena says blaze at the same time Shuriki yells inferno!  Elena tries to make herself vanish, but it doesn’t work all the way.  Shuriki brings her out of it by yelling chaos.  Fiero gets in a good hit, which destroys the float.  What were you saying about all our city’s resources, Christobal?  That’s crappy craftsmanship if you ask me!  It’s not long before Elena is blasted into the water by Shuriki, losing consciousness and her scepter in the process!  And that’s where I leave everyone for now. Part 3 is coming soon!  Feel free to comment in an ask or send me a message!

Week 36: August 31-September 6
31: The US Open begins its run. Naomi Osaka, the tournament’s eventual female winner, uses masks to show her support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Over the course of the Open, she will wear masks bearing the names of Breonna Taylor, Elijah McCalin, Ahmaud Arbery, Trayvon Martin, George Floyd, Philando Castile, and Tamir Rice. Osaka was born in Japan to a Haitian-American father and Japanese mother. Raised in the United States, she competes under the Japanese flag. Osaka’s father was inspired to teach his daughters to play tennis after watching the Williams sisters’ 1999 US Open match. The sport has seen a dramatic rise in interest from Black players in recent years - and an accompanying wave of up-and-coming Black talent like Osaka, Coco Gauff, Sloan Stephens, Taylor Townsend, Frances Tiafoe, and Canada’s own Felix Auger-Aliassime

1: The army announces they are expanding the inquiry into the culture of bullying and sexual harassment at Fort Hood. Investigators interviewed male and female soldiers stationed at the Texas base after Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen was murdered on-base in April. A third of women interviewed said that they had been sexually harassed in the past year. Donald Trump, meanwhile, is visiting Kenosha, Wisconsin over the objections of the city’s mayor and the state governor. The city has become a flashpoint in the discussions about race, policing and justice in America after the police shooting of Jacob Blake and the subsequent slaying of two protesters by a teenage militia member.
2: Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s tell-all book reveals that Donald Trump joked she should ‘take one for the team’ after North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un winked at her during a 2018 summit. Which is fucked up. But still not quite as fucked up as my last workplace.

3: 200 mammoths - along with 5 horses and 25 camels - are uncovered during construction at a Mexico City airport. It is the largest find of mammoth bones ever recorded. It’s cyclone season in the Pacific and a large typhoon is rushing north through the East China Sea to the Korea peninsula. In unimportant news I’ve been unable to squeeze in thus far: universities are preparing to return for the fall semester. Because many states - like New York - require visitors to quarantine upon entry universities are rushing to accommodate these incoming students. And so the world is treated a montage of students unpacking sometimes-enviable-but-often-grotesque lunches amidst their near-derelict dorms. The runaway winner for worst meal? NYU’s watermelon chicken salad.
4: Classes are cancelled and students are preparing to return home after Syracuse University of New York shutters its doors, just one week after classes began. At least 500 students have tested positive, in an outbreak spurned on by homecoming parties. Just a few weeks ago, Ohio State temporarily suspended 228 students who attended large social gatherings. Many universities are struggling with outbreaks as students arrive on campus, especially after long lonely summers in isolation. The worst offender - ‘Bama, of course. Though classes have barely begun, the school has already reported 1300 cases.

A memorial site for Daniel Prude is set up in Rochester, NY, near the place he was taken into custody by police. Prude died during the altercation, after a police offer knelt on his back - Joshua Rashaad McFadden/The New York Times
5: New York’s Attorney General, Letitia James, announces a grand jury investigation into the death of Daniel Prude, a 41-year-old black man who died during an encounter with Rochester police in March. Prude’s family released police body-cam footage earlier this week that undermined police claims that Prude died of an overdose. Videos shows the police handcuffing the naked Prude - who was suffering a psychotic episode after ingesting PCP - and placing a spit hood over his head. An officer knelt on his back, while another pressed his head to the pavement using both hands. “You’re trying to kill me”, Prude says. Journalists will later report that Rochester’s police department tried to suppress the release of the video, fearing it would incite violent blow-back in the wake of the George Floyd protests. The protests begin almost immediately - demonstrators are met with riot police and pepper spray. They also face a growing animosity from right-wing and pro-Trump counter-protesters - two cars careened into a crowd of protesters, early this morning, knocking them down.

Firefighters prepare to fight the El Dorado blaze near Yucaipa, California, August 5 - Ringo H.W. Chiu/AP
6: The fires in California are still raging - and will only worsen win the coming days. The El Dorado Fire near Los Angeles is spreading, forcing evacuations in Oak Glen, Mountain Home Village, Yucaipa, and Forest Falls. The blaze was sparked on Saturday morning after a couple set off a defective gender-reveal smoke bomb in tall, dry grass. The fire will be mostly-contained within a few weeks, however it will not be fully extinguished until mid-November. It will claim the life of one firefighter, destroy several homes, and consume nearly 23,000 acres of land. If this feels like deja-vu it’s because this isn’t the first wildfire caused by parents celebrating their babies’ genitalia - in 2017 an off-duty Border Patrol agent set off a fire during a gender reveal in Arizona after shooting an explosive target filled with colourful powder, which set the surrounding brush ablaze. The resulting 45,000 acre fire ravaged Coronado National Forest.

No necesito tus correcciones". Conscious of the vast interpretations and many meanings behind the word SENSE in the public context of 14th Street in Manhattan, Art in Odd Places 2017 will present installations, performative actions, audios, choreographies, workshops, oracles, classes, salons, time-based/online-digital/and multimedia projects, as well as proposals in any uncategorized formats, all of which are to focus on intuiting the unseen at an intimate or collective level. Emphasis will be given to honest processes pointing to any of the hidden currents that flow through, below, or above the New York City thoroughfare in question; currents of which most busy passersby may remain unaware. Similarly, SENSE will welcome ideas that aim to awaken dormant perceptions within individual pedestrians, and arouse one-on-one or group synergies that promote sighting, feeling and self-healing.
