How does it work now?
I don't understand the new Nanowrimo website and it's stressing me more than Nanowrimo (I didn't know it was possible). I can't change the time of 1h for the writing and I didn't write those words today. Whyyyyy?
Anyway, happy Nanowrimo to everyone!

I feel like I’m losing motivation for NaNo. Help please. :( I just keep doubting myself instead of sitting my butt down and writing.

Heyooo!!!  |NaNoWriMo 2019
Hi  there!
So probably not a lot of you know that  I’m a writer....  BUT I AM! And this year I’m going to be participating in NaNo :D You can add me as a Buddy if you’d like!
I’m writing a fantasy/LGBT+ story this November and I’m doing a lot of prep stuff which I’ll be posting about here and on my Insta!
I’m in search of  buddies so we can do writing sprints and bounce off ideas on each other! I want to know what  others are doing for NaNo as well!
Other than that I am going to be posting a lot during Preptober and november with the tags #nanowrimo19 and #ameliedoesnano.

NaNoWriMo is OVER
For the last 30 days I’ve been working incredibly hard to accomplish another huge project. Writing has always been something I’ve done as a hobby (yes-- I write fanfiction, I roleplay, and I’m not embarrassed to admit it) so this is the first time writing something 100% my own creation.
People who know me know that I love Dungeons and Dragons. For the last four years or so, I’ve been desperately latching onto every opportunity I could to play campaigns and oneshots and to create a character (only to end up not using them at all)
So I thought to myself, how to I make use of these ‘dead’ characters?
That’s where NaNoWriMo came in. I spend the month writing an anthology of eleven character backstories, events, and key moments in their timeline. It was partially for myself, but I would love to share my finished product with all of you.
If you’d be interested in reading my anthology, here’s a link.
I’m incredibly proud of what I was able to do and I hope you enjoy it as well! If you have any questions about the characters or would like to see some artwork I’ve amassed over the years of these characters, I have them all saved and ready to go!

Lisa’s writeblr intro/ WIP introduction
So, since I’m doing NaNoWriMo this year, I thought I might do a post about the story I’m writing and how I’m approaching it. I’m also doing it, because I don’t think I’ve done a proper writeblr intro yet. So, anyway, Hi, I’m Lisa, and I’m doing NaNoWriMo for the first time this year.
My WIP is set in the future, when time travel has been invented. The main character is a girl named Tara who is trying to get into this rebel organization who wants to use time travel to manipulate their present (for better/ worse? who knows?).
Anyway, she makes a mistake, accidentally kidnaps the wrong guy, and now they are on the run (through time!!) from the rebel organization AND the Time Police (because of course there will be Time Police).
I decided to do NaNoWriMo this year, because I had this idea halfway through my high school years. I always had an excuse for not writing it, because I kept thinking that I haven’t thought it through well enough, etc. I’m afraid if I don’t write it now, I’m going to outgrow it (or grow tired of it or something) and I don’t want it to happen, because I’ve spent literally half of my high school career daydreaming about the story and characters.
So, forcing myself to write it has been so much more fun than I’ve anticipated. I think the actual writing I’m doing is garbage, but I’m finally getting momentum, and I feel like I’m getting a more realistic feel for what the story is going to be like, instead of just some vague daydream. I don’t really like the idea of ‘just write and see what comes out without any planning’ for a first draft, so I never really wanted to do NaNoWriMo, but I forgot how much fun it is to just experiment and play around. So I guess there is value in overthinking planning, as well as in messing around and just writing. It’s nice just having fun.
I won’t be posting any excerpts on Tumblr, because I write in Afrikaans and my writing is genuinely a mess right now, but if anyone actually reads this and would like to chat about your/my WIP, rant about NaNoWriMo or talk about writing in general, please feel free. I would like to be more interactive :D

To those participating in NaNoWriMo this year, try not to put all your focus on the word count. Just write for the fun of it and enjoy it. Stop stressing out so much about the word count and how much planning you’ve done. What will be, will be.

HOW HAVE YOU WRITTEN MORE THAN 8500 WORDS IN TWO DAYS? WHAT KIND OF BLACK MAGIC IS THIS? GIVE ME TIPS WRITING GOD!!!
omg hahaha, stop
I have had more coffee than is probably healthy
I actually switched to comic sans (bc of that one post that says it helps)
and:
WRITE. don’t edit while you write.
this is literally the second to last line I wrote and it’s objectively terrible but I won’t fix it just yet:
“Can you fix him up?” He asked Inathe and with a deep sigh and some mumbled curses under her breath, she fixed what looked to be a broken nose.
note the misspelled name and the really very terrible sentence there
once I have a few more words in, I can go back and edit it but for the time being it’s all about quantity not quality
I can stress over word choices and sentence structure once I have the plot down
ALSO! if you know the rough plot, create very dumb and short summaries for each chapter
eg: Character X is with Y and Z. They talk about ABC and then G comes in and they have a fight about LMN. X thinks about how much she dislikes G.
that way you have a game plan for every chapter and know where you should be
you don’t have to do this for everything. for example, I have rough outlines for the first five chapters and I’m almost done with them, so now I’m gonna write the next summaries for the next batch
and most importantly: HAVE FUN WITH IT. if it’s not happening right now, take a break. Have a snack, do something you like. I actually watched the sixth Harry Potter movie last night because I needed to get in the headspace. (I’m doing a feysand hogwarts au, if you didn’t know)
**ALSO: If you like listening to music while writing, listen to instrumental songs or songs that you don’t usually sing along with. That way, you won’t be tempted to stop writing and sing along.

NaNoWriMo tips for my friends
Just somethings I thought would be helpful for my friends doing NaNoWriMo with me this year!
1/ Aim to write more than the minimum each day.
I aim for 2,000 words every day, because it’s easy to write an extra 400 words when you’re already writing and they pile up really quickly. Being a bit ahead of your goal means you can afford to take a day or two off when things get tough, which they will.
2/ Figure out how long it takes you to write 2,000 words.
This is useful to know because it means you can factor in writing time with your usual schedule. Personally, it takes me 2 hours, which I split into an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. That way you know if you have enough time.
3/ If you need to boost your word count, use FreeWrite.
This is an app that works on iPhones/iPads (maybe Android? I don’t know) and it will increase your writing speed exponentially. You set a total time you want to write for (I suggest you start with 5 minutes) and you have to write continuously until the timer’s up. If you pause too long then it resets. It’s tough but effective -- I wouldn’t use it all the time, though, because the quality of your work takes a hit. But if you have a spare 10 minutes on your phone or before lesson then it really helps with achieving words goals.
4/ Be social!
Writing can be isolating, but it’s so much fun with friends! Make a group chat with the people who are doing it with you and send memes. Organize to meet up so you can talk about your projects or write together. 10/10 would recommend some friendlings.
5/ Choose a hot drink.
It’s November so it’s chilly. Pick a nice, warm, sweet drink that will fuel you to write. My go-to is to mix hot chocolate powder with my coffee, but there are a lot of options (tea, coffee, the souls of the damned...) so go nuts. It’s great when you need a quick reset from NaNoWriMo to just get up, make a hot drink, and sit back down with a clear head.
6/ Have a reward system.
Whether its for every day you maintain a streak, every 100 words written, or every hour spent writing, give yourself rewards for doing well! Long baths, sweet treats and Netflix shows are all good options, but it’s whatever works for you. Cookies are always a good motivator.
7/ Go easy on yourself.
It’s okay if you don’t get your word goal for the day. it’s okay if you don’t get you word goal for the month. Go easy on yourself and understand that writing is hard, life is hard, and you’re already so cool just for trying. Writing 50,000 words is a lot of pressure but it should be fun! If you have homework and chores and shifts piling up then dropping NaNo is the smart thing to do -- above all, NaNoWriMo is meant to be fun, so don’t let it take the joy out of writing.

Spent a good chunk of time tonight outlining my NaNo novel...
And I just spent the last 20 minutes trying to figure out where my characters live in San Francisco.
