Not trying to be a negative Nancy, but Harry's brand deals and Pleasing pr have been so heavy-handed and embarrassing lately. I understand that you have to sacrifice things in order to have a career in music like he has, but are the brand deals part of the Sony contract? And he seems to hate it...Has it always been like that?
I don't really understand why people get so worked up about this stuff. Pleasing is his company. Of course, he's going to promote it. And people always want whatever he's wearing/carrying/talking about, so getting popped with a new tote makes sense.
The Lime bikes I assume he's getting paid for. I don't know what the deal is that he made with Lime, but why do people care beyond the fact that it's obviously some sort of ad campaign? I'd rather him be doing that than hawking luxury watches or tequila or some crap like that. I've seen people upset because the bike stuff is "tacky," as if he should only be photographed doing "cool" or high-end things or something. But when he's doing that, people get their knickers in a twist that he's "out of touch" and "elitist."
He really can't win, no matter what he does.

1996: April-June
This was supposed to start with Rage Against the Machine but I'm saving them for Metal Monday.
The Cranberries released their third album but it was a style shift which didn't speak much to me.
And then Tina Turner released Wildest Dreams. Other than the excellent Bond theme GoldenEye, written by U2's Bono and The Edge, it contained one of my favorite tracks of the year, Whatever You Want, co-written by 80s dance-pop singer Taylor Dayne and illustrious producer Arthur Baker, with sweeping production from Trevor Horn. (video directed by Stephane Sednaoui.)
youtube
Then came electronica duo Orbital, aka brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll, with In Sides, producing the rhythmic yet mysterious The Box, accompanied by a stop-motion music video starring Tilda Swinton. (directed by Jes Benstock - more on this video here.)
youtube
Backstreet Boys released their debut album and became huge.
George Michael, finally free from his Sony Music contract after a long battle, released Older, featuring the funky (and horny) Fastlove and the smooth jazzy Spinning the Wheel. (both directed by Vaughan Arnell and Anthea Benton.)
Manic Street Preachers released Everything Must Go, including A Design for Life.
youtube
The Wallflowers, fronted by Bob Dylan's son Jakob, released Bringing Down the Horse, featuring One Headlight.
And then, of course, we got the massive Down on the Upside by Soundgarden, with Pretty Noose, Blow Up the Outside World, and my favorite, Burden in My Hand (video directed by Jake Scott).
youtube
There was Everything but the Girl with Walking Wounded (video directed by indie film giant Hal Hartley - go watch The Unbelievable Truth.) Metallica with Load's Until it Sleeps (directed by Samuel Bayer). Robert Miles released Dreamland featuring Children, kickstarting the Dream house genre.
Placebo, with gender-bending frontman Brian Molko, released their eponymous debut, spawning single Nancy Boy. The music video's thumbnail might be a little disturbing so I'm posting the audio version.
youtube
Nada Surf spouted the sarcastic Popular on High/Low.
And lastly, Beck released Odelay which became big, but unofortunately I wasn't really taken by it.
See you on the next one.

The start of Summer 2024 "Fuck It Why Not" watch list!
-Dark Side of the Ring docu-series (Pretty entertaining, lost of interesting characters, sometimes very rough to watch. If you know the Chris and Nancy Benoit story, that's a hard two parter; all the more so because it also deals with Eddie Guerrero)
-Haikyu!! (I watched the first season a couple of years ago and liked it. Now I'm going all in for as long as I can. Yuki Hayashi's music is top shelf.)
-Cassette: A Documentary Mixtape (Picked up purely for the quirkiness, hooked for the history, culture of tapes in music and having the Old Guard (Henry Rollins and Ian McKaye) reminiscing about the old media.)
-Madame Web (Nothing would be lost if this film hadn't of been made. I don't know what Sony's long play is, but Spider-man movies with Spider-man have been pretty miss thus far.)
-Full Metal Jacket (It took me a while to get to this. I knew about some thing because of pop cultural osmosis, but the entirety was good. And compared to other Kubrick films I've watched, it felt the least Kubrick-ian. Not in a bad way. But you can't watch 2001 or The Shining and thing "I know EXACTLY what FMJ will be about.")
-The Acolyte (It's entertaining. My brother and I have decided we would either a) break up the flashback episode so that Ep 1 would include bits, then do the "present day" story, then Ep 2 would continue the flashback, as would 3 and so on until by the end of the season we would of seen the whole story without it being weirdly placed and break up the narrative at the start or b) have the "past" episode at the VERY END of the season.)
-Brats (The Brat Pack era of movies were never a big thing for me, but this was an interesting look at whether an assigned title on a group can be beneficial or harmful.)

Moon Dance
Last night was a marvelous night for a moon dance (I love that song!) and because our house is situated in a way that doesn't allow for my favorite past time of moongazing (it breaks my heart) we took a little drive. Winding up, down, and around on narrow country roads, we arrived at the Choptank Marina to watch the Strawberry Moon come up over the water. Lest you think that this was in any way a romantic outing, think again.
I sat on a bench while the mister snapped away. Someday I'll bury him with that camera. I think he'd rather lose a leg than his trusty Sony. My little phone camera could not do justice to that big, beautiful moon, so I'm sharing Mickey's photo.
After plenty of time admiring bella luna, we decided to head home. Since the moon didn't really rise until after 9, it was pushing 10 o'clock when we started the car. The older I get the later that feels. Taking the same winding roads on the way back, Mickey asked if I wanted to stop at a farm stand full of summer squash that I'd noticed on the way in...when there was daylight. I scoffed and said that it was too dark and I'd probably get shot. He assured me that he'd just point the headlights at the stand and I'd be fine. I've seen enough Dateline episodes to know a set up when I see one. Still, the lure of a big bag of yellow squash was too tempting. The stand is on the honor system, so you just put your cash in a metal lock box. Mickey lit me up with the headlights and I got busy stuffing a bag with pretty crooknecks. Our car radio filled the night with 80's tunes and the price list made me feel like it really was the 80's again. Cheap!
With the moon on one side and Mickey on the other, I was center stage. I snapped that pic after hopping back in the car. Beyond the veggie stand there's a field of u-pick flowers, mostly zinnias and sunflowers. You could grab dinner and a centerpiece here! Anywho, this morning after breakfast I cooked up about half the squash.
This is just good ol' southern stewed yellow squash and I love it. All you do is dice up a sweet onion, throw a 1/4 cup of butter into a deep skillet, and sauté the onion with plenty of salt and pepper. When the onion is tender just toss in your squash, clap the lid on, and let it simmer for about twenty minutes. No water necessary, squash is one of those veggies that is mostly water anyway. I had a bowl for lunch and it was delicious. Since the squash is so healthy ( vitamins A, B6, C, as well as potassium, fiber, magnesium, folate, riboflavin, phosphorus, and manganese) we'll just pretend that the butter doesn't count.
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
2 cups chopped sweet onion
3/4 tsp. kosher salt
3/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
2 lb. yellow squash, sliced 1/4-in. thick (about 7 small) So simple!
My mother-in-law makes really good stewed squash because she takes the time to brown her squash a bit in a skillet first. I'm too lazy for that, though - and my method works just fine. That's what's shaking here on this steamy Saturday night. Mickey is watching the Braves lose to the Yankees and I'm tapping away on my laptop, talking to you. Life in the fast lane. It's not particularly glamorous or romantic, but he's willing to shine his headlights on me while I stuff squash into a bag on a lonely country road - if that's not love I don't know what is. I'm positive that if a shot rang out or if Bigfoot grabbed me he would have immediately floored it to get help. He'd probably write a lovely obituary for me too. No one would be surprised that I died while gathering food. Well, it's that time of night where I can't stand having this bra on for one more minute - so I'll head upstairs for a bath and a book. I'll meet you back here tomorrow to talk more nonsense. Thanks for listening. Sending out plenty of love, hope you feel it. Stay safe, stay well. XOXO, Nancy

La Toya Yvonne Jackson (born May 29, 1956) is a singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman, and television personality. The fifth and middle child of the Jackson family, she first gained recognition on the family’s variety television series, The Jacksons. She saw success as a solo recording artist under multiple record labels, including Polydor, Sony Music, and RCA, where she released nine studio albums over fifteen years. Her most successful releases in the US were her self-titled debut album and the single “Heart Don’t Lie”. Her other songs include “If You Feel the Funk”, “Bet’cha Gonna Need My Lovin’”, “Hot Potato”, “You’re Gonna Get Rocked!” and “Sexbox”. “Just Say No” from her fifth album was composed for First Lady Nancy Reagan and the Reagan administration’s anti-drug campaign.
She is a two-time New York Times best-selling author. She posed for Playboy magazine in 1989 and again in 1991 to promote her New York Times Best Seller La Toya: Growing Up in the Jackson Family. In 1992, she signed a contract with the Moulin Rouge to star in the successful Paris revue, Formidable.
Her recording career began its decline as a result of her controversial marriage to entertainment manager Jack Gordon (1989-97). She returned to the music industry with the singles “Just Wanna Dance”, “Home” and “Free the World”, which saw success on the Hot Dance Club Play chart in the US. She was a contestant on the fourth installment of The Celebrity Apprentice and released an extended play, Starting Over, which is her most recent release to date. She appeared in her reality television series, Life with La Toya, which aired for two seasons. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

I recently had the chance to try out one of Unistellar’s smart telescopes, the eQuinox 2. Unparalleled in its ease of use, I was literally viewing distant nebula, galaxies, and star clusters within 15 minutes of opening the box. I also had the opportunity to try out Unistellar’s new Smart Solar Filter, which I’ll discuss more below. But first, more about the telescope itself: eQuinox 2 telescope. Credit: Unistellar. The eQuinox 2 is incredibly easy to set up and use, thanks to Unistellar’s phone or tablet app where you control the telescope. If you’ve ever struggled with aligning a telescope, you can breathe a sigh of relief with the eQuinox 2. The automatic alignment, calibration and orientation are a snap, and the instructions for focusing the telescope are quick and easy. This telescope is a 4.5-inch (114mm) reflector telescope, and is mounted on a motorized altazimuth mount that autonomously aligns with and tracks the night sky, based on the location of your connected phone or tablet. Unistellar’s ‘stellar’ app But where the Unistellar app really shines is the smart go-to feature. You can choose from a catalog of over 5,000 celestial objects based on your location. This is especially handy for novice observers who might not know what might be available to see in the night sky. You should update the app frequently so that new objects like comets or supernova are part of the database. To connect the eQuinox 2 to your phone or tablet, you need to connect to the telescope’s wifi. This is easy to do, but I did have occasional problems with it disconnecting if I tried to use another app or the camera on my phone while also observing. Other times, the app would quit responding after long observing times. But this was easily remedied by “killing” the app and restarting it – which for iOS means dragging the app to the top of the screen and then restarting it. One aspect of the eQuinox 2 that took me awhile to come to grips with is that it has no eyepiece. That means you’re not looking directly at the original photons from objects in the cosmos. Instead, you look at the app to see what the telescope is viewing. While it might seem odd at first, the fact that you can share the screen easily in a group setting is excellent for star gazing parties, or for observing with children — they can easily see the screen, and get excited about what they are seeing! Additionally, on cold evenings, I set up the telescope out on my deck and then went back inside and operated it. I could “go to” all sorts of celestial objects and see my observations from the comfy warmth of my favorite chair. Otherwise, I might have skipped observing on those colder nights. Also — and this is probably the most fun and enjoyable aspect of the eQuinox 2 — you can quickly and easily share your astrophotography. The ease of taking photos of the objects you’re viewing is unequivocally the highlight of this telescope. And you can take some really stunning astrophotos. The eQuinox 2’s ability to see distant objects is especially impressive, as you can do long exposures with the click of a button. It uses a Sony IMX347 image sensor which can take long exposures of deep-sky objects. You can read more technical details about the eQuinox 2 in our previous review by David Dickinson. The telescope’s onboard computer stacks images in real time, and gradually you’ll see an ever-clearer image, with greater detail and contrast appear on your screen. It’s exciting and fun to see distant objects slowly come into a crisp view. When you take an image, it creates both framed and auto-captioned images (date, time and exposure) as well as non-framed images that are automatically saved to your photo app. This makes it easy to share your images with family and friends via text or on social media. The eQuinox 2 is currently selling for $2,099 – a discount from the regular price of $2,499, plus Unistellar currently has some big holiday discounts. See their website for more details. One aspect I was a little disappointed in was the telescope’s ability to see “closer” objects, like the Moon and planets in our Solar System. For example, the first time I observed the Moon, the go-to feature didn’t work well. It never actually got the Moon into the field of view, but it got close. I was able to manually move it with the controller in the app, and get the Moon in the field of view. The picture, seen above, was fairly good, but not as good as I was expecting or hoping. I should note that I live in a remote area, so not sure if the location feature is hampered by not being near civilization! But, and a big but here… this aspect of observing was much improved after I received the new solar filter, which included an upgrade to the telescope’s computer and the app as well. Smart Solar Filter The eQuinox 2 and solar filter. Credit: Nancy Atkinson. So now it’s time to discuss Unistellar’s Smart Solar Filter. These filters are made for use exclusively with Unistellar’s telescopes, allowing observations of sunspots in real-time and the ability to photograph the Sun. The filter snaps easily on the telescope, but I can tell you, for someone who had never used a solar filter before, it took a fair amount of faith to point the telescope directly at the Sun for the first time! The Smart Solar Filter is designed to transmit only 1/100,000th of the Sun’s light, so you can view the Sun without endangering your eyes or your telescope. Again, the Unistellar app makes Sun observation easy, with a dedicated solar mode to automatically point the smart telescope in the direction of the brightest thing in the daytime sky, and track its motion. And again, taking a photo of the Sun is easy-peasy – just click a button –, although the ability for long exposure or stacking images is not available. But thanks to automated image processing, I could observe and take pictures of the Sun and sunspots. While the images of the sunspots were a bit ‘soft,’ I was impressed with how the telescope provided views of the Sun’s granulation — the bubble-like features due to convection currents in the solar interior— which are visible across the entire surface. The Sun on November 1, 2023 with the eQuinox 2 telescope by Unistellar and Smart Solar Filter. Credit: Nancy Atkinson. The Sun is currently in one of its most active periods, so this filter provides excellent opportunities for observation. I’m especially looking forward to seeing how it will perform with the total solar eclipse coming up on April 8, 2024, visible across a wide swath of the United States. With smart telescopes like the eQuinox 2 and its solar filter, it makes solar observing and imaging available to even a novice, but it’s also fun for an ‘old-school’ observer, too, to use the latest technology for ease, enjoyment and fast results. The Smart Solar Filter sells for $249. Become a Citizen Scientist Since Unistellar has created partnerships with leading scientific institutions like NASA and the SETI Institute, the company has built the world’s largest citizen astronomy community. Unistellar users have tracked near-Earth asteroids, followed space missions including NASA’s Artemis 1 to the Moon and back, DART’s impact of an asteroid, and even traced the light curve of transiting exoplanets. Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day? Galen & Paul (Sony) (released May 2023)
I'm a sucker for couples who aren't couples and whose voices shouldn't work together yet do quite nicely. Think Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell or Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin or how about Kurt Wagner and Courtney Tidwell. Of course, the forerunners of this are Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood. Now we can add Paul Simonon (once of The Clash and then Havana 3 AM, The Good The Bad and The Queen, not to mention serving as guest bassist on any number of albums for any number of artists in this world, including Bob Dylan) and Galen Ayers, the daughter of legendary Kevin Ayers (and sister to Rachel Ayers of The Colour of Love from the '90s). This is certainly a low key album but it is precisely the kind of thing I might have picked up way back in the day when I had record stores to visit on a Saturday and wondered what the heck it was. I find the simply presentation of the album appealing. Above are the front and back of the album.
Below are shots of the inner sleeve, both front and back.
Below are the labels for each side.
I meant to indicate that I really liked the simple but effective (and classy) artwork on this album. I just discovered that it was drawn by Simonon! These multi-talented people are simply magic in my mind.

We're talking about 'HEART HEALTH & DIABETES' with musical inspiration from the rock band "Heart".
Adults with diabetes are two to four times more likely to die from heart disease than adults without diabetes.
People with insulin resistance or diabetes in combination with one or more of these risk factors are at even greater risk of heart disease or stroke. However, by managing their risk factors, people with diabetes may avoid or delay the development of heart and blood vessel disease.
The rock band "Heart" was started in Seattle in the 1960s. Heart’s mix of hard rock and folk yielded one of the longest lasting and most commercially successful bands of all time. The band is fronted by sisters, Ann and Nancy Wilson who wrote many of the band's songs. Heart's new “Love Alive” Tour kicks off this Summer with Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile, Elle King, and Lucie Silvas.
Guests include Author of 'Nutrition & You' Dr. Joan Salge Blake, EdD, RDN, LDN, FAND, Jill Weisenberger, MS, RDN, CDE, CHWC, FAND, Glucose SOS founder Pamela Heyward and the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach.
Throughout the podcast, we will play music from Heart’s "The Essential Heart" album courtesy of SONY Music.
