Uzumaki Naruto died one early morning in late autumn.

It happened as he worked deep into the night at the Fire Tower, performing the most thankless yet necessary part of his duties as Hokage: the bureaucracy. It began as a sharp pain on his left side, constant but bearable. He must have overdone it in training; he hated to admit he was no longer young, and without Kurama to help with healing, he couldn’t afford to be as careless as before.

Fifteen minutes later, he felt sleepy—very sleepy—and rested his head on his arms to close his eyes for half an hour. He never woke up again. That was how they found him the next morning.

The Seventh Hokage passed away at 66 years-old. His body was cremated, and his ashes were scattered across the Village Hidden in the Leaf, the place he loved most in the world and that had, in turn, loved him deeply, though only after rejecting him harshly during his formative years.

About a month later, on the eve of Uzumaki Hinata’s birthday, the village held a ceremony to unveil a statue in honor of the late Nanadaime. Naruto was depicted on a two-meter-high marble pedestal, grinning from ear to ear, captured at the peak of his form and glory. One hand was on his hip, the other holding his iconic attack, frozen in an eternal spin, hollow-pupiled eyes destined to watch over the inhabitants of Konoha as long as the statue stood.

Amazingly, Hinata still had tears to cry, and they ran thick and warm down the fine lines of her face. She’d already endured the funeral alone, wishing not to go through anything similar again. That’s when a hand landed heavily on her shoulder.

'Sasuke-kun…'

Hinata collapsed against the man, her tears soaking and warming the formal attire he wore. Sasuke embraced her back as best he could with his one arm, his hand on her graying hair, tied in a modest bun.

Sasuke hadn’t attended the funeral. Hinata understood and even wished she could have done the same, envying him for the freedom to keep his grief and sorrow private, while she was expected to mourn publicly and, at the same time, be strong for others, as the Hokage’s widow.

Hinata forgave Sasuke immediately. He was there now, with her, in the arms of the only other person who truly knew what it was like to love Uzumaki Naruto.
