The Casual Classism of This American Life (rant/essay)

This American Life is considered a progressive voice in U.S. discourse, and not without reason. They have told many stories of immigrants, the poor, and ethnic minorities with an empathy that is often absent from other media, particularly the cable news giants. But, like the New York Times, there is an implicit bourgeois tone in their narrative, a kind of casual classism in the way that their stories get presented.

I'm going to break down a specific, recent episode to demonstrate this, but before I do that, I will state my conclusion here: bourgeois media will not tell the story of the working class, from the working class's perspective. We need our own media, our own messaging, to get our stories out there. "Progressive" voices like NPR, the BBC, MSNBC, etc. may sometimes tell working class stories, but they will do so from the perspective of the affluent, the professional class, like a doctor relating the story of a beggar he saw to his colleagues. If you're the beggar, who gets to hear you speak?

The Episode

The episode that bothered me enough to write this is called "Long-Awaited Asteroid Finally Hits Earth". The metaphorical asteroid is the impending school re-opening that school administrations, teachers, parents, and students have all been dreading in the U.S. since mid-March. The episode has five acts covering the situation "on the ground" in various parts of the country - Utah, Tennessee, South Carolina, Indianapolis, etc.

In NOT ONE of these acts did they interview non-professional staff of the schools. Three of the five acts are almost solely from the perspective of teachers, one is shared between school administration and parents, and the last is told from the perspective of a university residential assistant (RA). Think about that for a second - they have an hour to devote to the people affected by the impending/ongoing disaster of re-opening schools in a pandemic and they didn't interview one cafeteria lady, not one janitor, not one substitute teacher, not one clerk. Not. One. There seems to be an implicit assumption that the opinion of these workers does not matter; they are effectively non-persons.

This favoring of the "professional" class is not an aberration, but typical in mainstream media. In all of the mainstream media (public or otherwise) that you've encountered during the pandemic, how much have you heard about the struggle to socially distance for workers in fast food restaurants? How many times have you heard about the raging Covid epidemics among migrant farmworkers? Or how homeless shelters are trying to deal with the epidemic? Now, compare this to how much we've heard in the media about the issues facing the "professional" class - office workers, teachers, university students, hospital workers.

If they were to do a story on Covid and prisons, do you think we would hear more from administrators or the prisoners and guards themselves? When talking about child labor in the global south, do we hear from the workers or from the white-collar activists and supply chain managers? How many reality TV stars are filmed in McMansions as opposed to trailers?

The media will not be forthcoming about our stories, about showing our reality. If we want to see the world not through the arches of the palace of Versailles - but as it really is - we have to do our own journalism.

I've been non-professional staff. I've worked in restaurants. I am, in many respects, the non-person that radio shows like This American Life are apt to ignore when sampling "public" opinion.

Tell your own story, tell the story of the working class. Don't let these institutions continue to act as if the people holding up their world do not exist.
