Let’s talk TroPreCure! (^∀^ 🌺)
Tumblr media
i’m so stupidly proud of this dumb pun “tropurikyua~”, hahahahaha
Last post of the year and wow is there are lot to be excited for!
I even had to make a list for the stuff I want to talk about and I’m sure I already forgot one or two things but we’ll get to them as we continue to float~ along the wave to February 28th, mmkay? :)
Now for what has peaked my interest so far. And yes, we have to talk about the following first:
Tumblr media
1) HealPre the shortest Precure season??
Unless they plan for double features in February (which I doubt but you never know), HealPre is likely going to reach only 45 episodes long instead of the usual 48~50 before TroPre I’m using this shortening of the title for now so if there’s a better alternative, tell me and I’ll switch out begins its broadcast.
Understandable because the producers probably want to get back to their normal scheduling as soon as possible (toy sales, y’know) and I suspect pushing the start of the new season back by a month is the most they’re willing to compromise.
As for me, I’m quite happy about this since HealPre’s lost its hold on my attention a while ago so the sooner TroPre gets here, the better. Though the downside might be a scrambled climax and a rushed, underwhelming ending for HealPre (I dunno if it’s January’s titles that feel a bit messy or if the hiatus is still throwing me off) but whatever. We’ll refresh ourselves with the new blood Cures so it’s all good.
Tumblr media
2) Tropical movie announced for Autumn 2021, no All Stars??
(source)
First saw this mentioned on Youtube somewhere but it’s all over the fandom forums by now. I mean, HealPre’s movie is set for March, the usual time slot for All Stars release. If Toei intended for there to be an All Stars in 2021, there’s no way they would announce the seasonal movie before it so speculations of them skipping it this year are probably true.
To squeeze it somewhere between March and October-ish would force them to readjust their budgets as well and I don’t think even Toei wants to go through that extra hassle after all the trouble the pandemic’s caused for everyone already. It’s just easier to resume All Stars in 2022.
That, and I think Laura being a major character in TroPre despite not having a Cure title (yet) would make for an awkward situation when the three latest teams gather so perhaps that’s also one of the reasons. But I’ll get back to Laura in a bit.
Tumblr media
3) Cure Summer is a RAINBOW Cure
So god help me if I see anyone calling her a Pink Cure.
Yes, she’s the lead Cure for this season. NO, she is not a Pink Cure.
Look, even the official website has a rainbow overlay for her profile pic and text font while everyone else’s respective theme colors are a solid hue:
Tumblr media
Therefore, RAINBOW.
In promotional material and merchandising, they’re probably going to advertise her primarily with pink bah and at worst, she might occasionally be labeled as a White Cure with multiple subcolors (her outfit is not pink-dominant) but definitely NOT. PINK.
...also, this goes without saying but f***yea, we finally got a lead Cure practically and unabashedly wearing the LGBTQ flag and you cannot tell me otherwise, Toei!
Own up to it! Declare Manatsu/Cure Summer as the Precure queer icon!
I’m not gonna stop yellin’ until you do! 😠
Tumblr media
4) Laura = obvious midseason Cure is obvious
First of all, Laura is a babe. I already love her the best and she’s not even Precure yet. <3
Anyways, the set-up is pretty much in the description. Important main character who’s not a mascot, stated to have a self-confident personality and just speaks her mind (oooh, I like~ :D), magical/foreign being from another world looking for Precure to save her home, possesses her own special item(s), has aspirations to become the next Queen (so she’s a princess-candidate or something to that effect, I suppose).
We’ve seen various combinations of these traits in past midseason (and a few starter) Cures so nobody should be surprised when we all guessed that one of the Cures would be a real live mermaid.
The only question is why not just make Laura a Cure from the get-go if she’s introduced to us at the beginning (like Hime or Lala) and having a team of five with no unnecessary extra add-ons later on (like Smile).
Well, there’s a simple answer for that: formula.
Toei is afraid that if they don’t spit out some new animation sequence at the halfway and third quarter points of the show, the kids will lose interest and abandon the series altogether. Which means failed toy sales. Oh nooo... [/sarcasm]
...Yea.
And this way they can also have Laura available in the Cure lineup for the next All Stars in 2022 instead of making her sit the fight out if we were going to have one in 2021. I’m convinced that’s gotta be one of the reasons. *shrug*
Tumblr media
But ok, whatever. Her debut is gonna be later, that’s all. She’s a delayed Cure.  Midseason Cure, same difference.
Moving along to the more important stuff now like what’s her Cure name gonna be, y/y?
Well, knowing Toei, a translation of the term “mermaid” into another language is the most predictable route even though we already have a Cure Mermaid. Not like that ever stopped them from repeating words before (ex. Cure Happy vs Cure Felice). Though if they do go down that road, I hope they opt for the Spanish/Italian “sirena” and not the French “sirène” because the latter sounds too close to how Cure Selene is pronounced in Japanese. And, putting it nicely, we all know Japanese pronunciation of foreign words is as off kilter as can be.
Hell, even the the Portuguese “sereia” sounds aesthetic as hell so it’d be nice if they can just remember there are other languages that exist out there besides Japanese, English and French when making the final decision at the writing table! *stomps foot* >:/
Alternatively, “nereid” or “naiad” are good choices too but they remind me too much of Greek myths and Laura’s from the Grand Ocean which covers more than just a couple of seas (Greece is surrounded by three, btw) so...
I dunno. But whatever it’s gonna be, she’s definitely got a strong association with water and her powers will probably be based on that.
Tumblr media
As for theme color, since there’s noticeably no blue or green Cure in the starter lineup, it’s likely she will take up that spot when she debuts around ep 20.
Pink is also open since Cure Summer, again, is technically not a Pink Cure and Laura’s hair and tail fin are hot and light pink respectively but looking at Laura’s design and concept, does anyone seriously believe that?
Her upper torso consists of aquamarine while the body of her tail is definitely some shade of cyan, implying they’re aiming for somewhere around the middle of green and blue on the lighter spectrum.
And yea, I’m aware that green and blue are considered exchangeable in some perspectives with how close some of their shades are to each other but officially, I think Laura’s gonna be grouped with the Green Cures.
Cuz of the hair. If Laura’s gonna keep it the same or a similar shade after transforming, that is. The Blues have always had cool-colored hair so putting Laura in with them might disrupt that harmony whereas if you put her with the few Greens there are (including Parfait), she’d fit right in.
I mean, we’ll see but that makes the most sense, doesn’t it?
On another note, I just want to say that I love how they added frills to her arms instead of letting her elbows go bare naked. It definitely makes her look more like a genuine mermaid than if she didn’t have them (remember, half fish doesn’t mean half the body :P).
Tumblr media
5) Magical Items
Frankly, I’m tired of seeing the transformation device being a compact again even though one of the main motifs is make-up this season. But at least, as far as Precure compacts goes, the Tropical one is my favorite cuz of how cute and delightfully colorful its toy version looks! So I guess I’m okay with it.
The Heart Rouge Rod, though? ...I dunno. I think it would’ve been fine without that...straw (?) jutting out at the top. It looks weird, doesn’t it look weird? :S
As for the collectible clip-ons, I can live without those for the rest of my life. Yeesh.
Tumblr media
Laura’s items, the Aqua Pot and the Ocean Prism Mirror.
Again with the portable, travel-size housing. *sigh* 😩
Alright, I can let this year slide cuz Laura (I’m so soft for her, omg) probably won’t be getting legs for 20 weeks so she’s got to move about on land somehow. But unless they’re really thinking about turning this idea of carrying your apartment around in your bag/pocket/purse into a reality (cuz that would be effin’ awesome), please be more creative with your toys.
On the other hand, I’m much more interested in the Ocean Prism Mirror but from what Kusyami (the Precure merchandise reviews I follow on Youtube) said in his latest vid, this is the ED dance item so don’t know if it’ll actually have an relevance to the story or not. But I did hear him mention it having something to do with the Queen as well and since Laura wishes to become Queen, maybe it’ll be important after all? Maybe it’s her transformation device?
That’d be super cool. Let’s continue the trend of the midseason Cure having a different transformation item than the starters. Honestly, we should alternate every other year or two but we’ve gone three seasons with all of them using the same henshin gimmicks up till HealPre and I just want a break from that.
Tumblr media
6) Fin sleeves??
These look so impractical for combat so maybe it’s exclusive to group attacks.
And/or a sort of precursor to the super forms?
*GASP* Does that mean they all eventually turn into mermaids? 🤩
Tumblr media
7) Yui finally became Precure!! 😭
lol, it’s all crack from this point on so don’t take it too seriously but man, after Yuni’s deceptive braids, I thought I wasn’t gonna see anything that reminded me of Yui for a while and lo behold, Sango.
kehehehehehe xD;
Though Yui might be closer to Minori in terms of personal interests (fairytales and storybooks).
Tumblr media
8) Akira, the actual Onee-chan version
I didn’t think this when I first saw her but once I read “Onee-san” in her profile, there’s no saving you now. Sorry, Asuka. 😅
Also, damn, do her sandals make her feet look big! Compare them to the heels she wears as Flamingo. Are they even the same?! lololol
Tumblr media
9) ...this sounds awfully familiar...
Translation:
Tokimeku Tokonatsu! [Exciting/Thrilling Everlasting Summer!] Cure Summer! Kirameku Hoseki! [Sparkling Jewel!] Cure Coral!  Hirameku Fuurutsu! [Flashing Fruit!] Cure Papaya!
Tumblr media
Japanese reiteration:
Mallow/Mao: Pink no tokimeki! Lillie: Blue no kirameki! Lana/Suiren: Yellow no kagayaki!
….........
@Toei

Vogue 73 questions with Mike Lawson and Ginny Baker
Tumblr media
“Hey Mike, what’s going on?”
“Not much, lookin’ forward to doing this interview.”
“I am too. Are you guys ready to answer 73 questions?”
“Sure, let’s go find Ginny.”
It turned out they found her sitting on a lounge by the pool in leggings and a t-shirt.
“So, you guys just finished playing in the World Series, any regrets?”
“No, we were excited to get there again this year,” Mike answered sitting next to Ginny.
“I mean, I hate to lose, but we played hard and that’s all you can do.”
“How many baseball games do you think you’ve played in your life?”
“For me? I have no idea. I’ve been playing since I was 5. That’s 35 years, between little league, AA, AAA and the majors? Let’s just say a lot,” Mike laughed.
“Same, minus 10 years,” Ginny added.
“Which of your competitors has helped you improve your game the most?”
“I would say Aaron Judge, a great hitter always makes me work that much harder for a strike.”
“Nolan, Nolan Arenado. I like to steal, but he keeps me honest.”
“If you could play any other sport, what would it be?”
“Tennis?” Ginny shrugged.
“I’ve always liked hockey.”
“Past or present who would you love to play with?”
“I gotta say Babe Ruth,” Mike said.
“For me, Cy Young or Yogi Berra.”
“What’s are you superstitious about?”
“I like a certain practice cage. I don’t know if it is a superstition, but I always go for that one if it’s available, and Mike used to sleep with his bat on game days.”
“Where do you go when you need to relax?”
“If I told you that, it wouldn’t be relaxing anymore,” Mike joked.
“We spend a lot of time at home, but we just took a vacation to Baja and that was really nice.”
“What is your nickname?”
“I call him old man.”
“And I call her rookie.”
Tumblr media
“Who is the funniest person you know?”
“Dwayne,” Ginny answered after a moment of thought.
Mike nodded. “He is great. We were at a fundraiser for his foundation the other day, and everyone at the table was laughing crying.”
“Wait, do you mean Dwayne Johnson?” the interviewer asked.
“Yeah, we met at the Espys and get together every now and then. He throws a great BBQ every year.”
“OK, what is your go to karaoke song?”
“Baker loves anything by Beyoncé or Katy Perry. I stick to the Eagles and Duran Duran.”
“What song always makes you want to dance?”
“He is right. I love Katy Perry and Beyoncé, but Uptown Funk is my jam.”
“I don’t dance much, but no one can resist Love Shack.”
“What is your walk out song?”
“I have a mix I listen to, it’s mostly instrumentals to help me clear my head.”
“I go for the classic, eye of the tiger.”
“If you could only read one book from now on, what would it be?”
“Treasure Island has been my favorite for a long time. I’ve read it 5-6 times, and I wouldn’t mind reading it again.”
“That is really hard for me, because I don’t read things more than once very often, but… I’m going to say Esperanza Rising. I know it is a kid’s book, but I still have the copy I read in 5th grade. Someday I want to be able to share it with my kid.”
“Most absurd rule in baseball?”
“It’s not really a written rule, but there is this thing where everyone must be involved in am on-field fight. When Gin went after the Mountain, our assistant coach had to walk out there and hold onto the other coach. These guys are in their 60’s hugging on the field so it is nice and even numbers. I mean I get it, but it can look pretty silly.”
“Describe your style in one word?”
“Comfy?” Ginny ventured.
“If you could raid anyone’s closet who would it be?”
“David Beckham,” Mike answered quickly.
“Serena Williams.”
“Any hidden talents?”
“I love to knit.”
“No kidding. I can’t tell you how many times she got me with one of her needles on the bus.”
“On purpose?”
“No, he is just clumsy and doesn’t look before he sits down.”
“I did get some cute hats and that blanket over there out of it, though.” He gestured to a knit blue and white blanket with a Padre’s logo on it draped over a leather chair.
“Looks nice, now for a hard one. What is love?”
“Baby don’t hurt me?” Mike joked, Ginny batted his arm. “No, seriously, love is different for different for different people but for me, it is a commitment to something that you care deeply about.”
“That and finding someone to see the best in you even when you can’t see it in yourself.”
“What is the most romantic thing you’ve done for each other?”
“He leaves me notes in my locker on days when we don’t work together.”
“She rubs my back.”
“Best or worst pick up line someone has ever used with you?”
“I thought it was funny when this guy said, I was so distracted by you that I ran into that wall over there. So, I am going to need you name and phone number for insurance purposes.”
“Who said that?” Mike asked.
“Never mind, what’s yours?”
“A girl just walked up, put her hand out and asked me I could hold it while she went for a walk.”
“Did you?” the interviewer asked.
“I did,” Mike smiled, then he reached out and squeezed Ginny’s hand.
“Who was your childhood crush?”
“This guy.”
“She finally admits it. She had my poster on her wall, but now I have hers too.”
“What was the last show you binged?”
“We just got done rewatching all of Brooklyn 99.”
“He was a thing for Rosa.”
“She does too.”
“I mean, doesn’t everyone?”
“Name one thing you can’t live without.”
“Air?” Mike joked.
“A good wifi network,” Ginny groaned. “I hate when I’m on the road and we finally get to a hotel and they have super slow internet. I just want to relax and watch Youtube or scroll tumblr.”
“Name something you are terrible at.”
“Bowling,” Ginny answered.
“I suck at word games, scrabble, boggle, all that stuff. She usually beats me by at least 100 points.”
“What is the most nervous you’ve ever been?”
“My first game in the majors.”
“Same. Mine, not hers. I wasn’t really nervous for her because we didn’t know each other, but I remember almost blacking out the first time I walked onto the field.”
“Name one bad habit you just can’t break.”
“I bite my fingernails, so I have to keep them super short, but that’s fine, because I would have to for pitching anyway.”
“I am an emotional shopper. When things aren’t going well in life, I use retail therapy way too much.”
“He is not kidding. The good thing is he cleans his closet out once every six months and donates a lot of impulse buys to charity.”
“Craziest fan moment?” “A lady told me she named her baby after me and asked me to sign her. I signed her little shirt, but it was a little weird.”
“What is one phrase you use too much?”
“I’m just sayin’. She keeps reminding me how much it annoys her, but it just rolls off my tongue.”
“That’s ok, I always say my bad, and he hates that, so we are even.”
“If you could be any animal, what would it be?”
“I want to say something bad ass, but really I’m a house cat.”
“I can totally see that. I am a… a bear, but mostly because I just want to sleep and be left alone sometimes.”
“Can you say something in a different language?”
“Que bola? Its Cuban for what’s up. I picked it up from Livan.”
“I speak some Indonesian, from my mom. Tidak apa apa is no worries, which is what I use most in like everyday conversation.”
“What is one cause you care deeply about?”
“It is hard to name one, but I work a lot with our local children’s hospital,” Mike answered.
“I support NAACP legal defense fund, Equal justice initiative and the African wildlife foundation.”
“How do you celebrate your wins?”
“Ice cream or beer depending on the day.”
“How do you deal with loses?”
“I try to figure out what went wrong, so I can do it differently next time,” Ginny said thoughtfully.
“How do you deal with haters?”
Ginny laughed, “You just gotta block’em out.”
“If you could redo one game which would it be?”
“The game where I messed up my knee the first time.”
“Yeah, when I almost got the no hitter and instead messed up my arm, that was pretty bad.”
“Besides baseball what would you like to be remembered for?”
“Being a good person.”
“If you weren’t baseball players, what else would you be?”
“I would do something with cars.”
“I would do something with history? Teaching or maybe be an anthropologist?”
“Do you have a pregame ritual?”
“I have a pump mix but mostly I like to meditate and mentally prepare. I usually go over the lineup one last time with Mike.”
“How many MLB teams can you name in ten seconds?”
“The Padres, the Braves, the Dodgers, the A’s, the Rockies, the Yankees, Sox, Cubs, Phillies, Astros, Mariners…”
Mike took over, “Jays, Giants, Angels, Brewers…”
“And that’s time, good job. Name the best baseball player who ever lived.” “Babe Ruth.”
“Willie Mays.”
“If you could only eat one thing forever, what would it be?”
“Pizza?” Mike answered.
“Burgers, but they have to come with fries,” Ginny chimed in.
“What movie always makes you cry?”
“Field of dreams.”
“The Lion King.”
“What movie makes you scream in terror?”
“My friends dragged me to the Omen once, which was pretty scary, but mostly I don’t watch scary movies.”
“I watched the exorcist way too young, and that pretty much put me off scary movies for life.”
“What is the most inspirational sports film of all time?”
“I always liked Cinderella Man with Russel Crow.”
“I really liked the Life of Pi.”
“Who do you want to play you in the movie of your life?”
“I don’t know that they would make a movie of my life, but when they make hers I think Ryan Gossling is a good choice, or Ryan Reynolds, or any of the Marvel Chrises.”
“If they made a movie… I would say… Letitia Wright maybe?”
“What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done?”
“As a kid I broke my ankle trying to do a skate board trick,” Mike scratched the back of his neck and flushed slightly.
“What is one skill you wish you had but you don’t?”
“I am trying to learn to cook, but Mike still does it most of the time.”
“If you were a super hero, what would your name be?”
“Black Diamond.”
“Beard-Man.”
“Who’s your most famous follower on twitter?”
“I don’t have a twitter.”
“A lot of people follow me to hear about Ginny, I would say Anna Kendrick is the most famous.”
“You travel a lot for work, what are three things you take with you everywhere?”
“My headphones, a neck pillow, and my phone charger.” “Same.”
“Do you have an pets?”
“We have a dog,” Ginny whistled, and a mini pie ball dachshund call running out. “This is Chip. I named her after the cup from beauty and the beast. She is a super sweet girl.”
“What’s your zodiac sign?”
“I am a Libra and Ginny is a Leo.”
“What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?”
“He likes coffee or half-baked and I like Cherry Garcia.”
“What’s one household chore you hate to do?”
“We both hate the dishes, so we do them together, so we can get it over with quickly.”
“Do you have any collections?”
“I have a snow globe collection, and Mike collects baseball memorabilia.”
“Who is more competitive?“
“Me!” they both said quickly, then looked at the other and laughed.
“What is your go to date night?”
“We like to go see comedians.”
“He just got us tickets to see Ali Wong for our anniversary.”
“If you could go anywhere on vacation where would it be?”
“We are going to Kenya next month, and I am really excited about that,” Ginny answered.
“Me too.”
“What is your love language?”
“I like acts of service and words of affirmation,” Mike answered seriously for once.
“and for me, it is quality time.”
“Sleep in or rise early?”
“Sleep in!” Mike grinned.
“Read a book or watch TV?”
“Watch tv,” they agreed.
“Kiss or hug?”
“Kiss,” they both snapped.
“Strength training or cardio?”
“Cardio,” Ginny answered automatically
“I like strength training,” Mike added.
“You guys recently got married, what was the biggest change?”
“Not really anything? We already lived together.”
“Calling him my husband, is weird sometimes.”
“What was your favorite part of the wedding?”
“When we left?” Ginny laughed.
“What kind of cake did you have?”
“Just plain yellow cake with chocolate frosting,” Mike answered.
“Who caught the bouquet?”
“My agent, Amelia.”
“What song was your first dance to?”
“Unforgettable.”
“What are you doing today?”
“We’re going to the farmer’s market, then coming home for dinner with some friends.” Ginny answered, walking toward the door.
“Can I come along?”
Ginny made a face. “No, thanks for stopping by though.”

this post is Marina’s List Of Favorite and/or Iconic Music Videos
this could also be subtitled as: if you truly want to understand me as a person, watch these videos because it’ll answer a lot of questions
it’s gonna be a long one so i’ll pop it under a cut
alright we goin by artist then chronological
AIDEN
knife blood nightmare - this is iconic for me simply bc i rly wanted to look like wil in this video so bad in 6th grade.
die romantic - WHAT A BOP. i used to do my black eyeshadow like wil in this video too lmao
ALL TIME LOW
poppin champagne - because blonde alex and also?? honestly?? what a wild video. this is truly late 00s oversaturated pop punk at its finest
i feel like dancin - i’m not the biggest fan of this record or even this song in general but this is like, quintessential all time low to me video-wise. like. it’s everything i want from an all time low video.
ARCHITECTS
follow the water - or as sam carter says, follow the wah-uh. first of all i love that this is in a church. second of all when will i get to go to an architects show this lit here in the states
heartburn - bc they all look pretty. ok. aesthetically on point as well.
AVENGED SEVENFOLD
beast and the harlot - i don’t always bop this song but when i do, the whole cul de sac does too. no but really this was so influential to middle school me i wanted nothing more than a boyfriend who looked like zacky or jimmy and whatever eyeshadows zacky was wearing in this clip
BLINK 182
i miss you - the video that inspired this post. THE AESTHETIQUE. 20′s inspired romantigoth film noir. i don’t yell about this music video enough.
BRING ME THE HORIZON
chelsea smile - it’s literally just a house part video but the song literally defines the year 2009 for me. emetophobia warning at 1:08
it never ends - this video got mad shit but i love it. pretty heavy gore throughout this video
alligator blood - CREEPY ASS AESTHETIC SHIT!!!! i live for it. 16 y/o me had it so bad for matt nicholls and him getting tied up and violated was like, god tier for me
visions - more creepy aesthetic shit. the videos on there is a hell were underrated
THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
hey john what’s your name again? - i gotta throw this one in just bc this hurls my ass right back to the year 2008. that bible imagery. those haircuts. it was a better time for music
html rules d00d - THIS SONG STILL SLAPS LMAO DON’T READ ME
ELISSA FRANCESCHI
salt - i’m not crying you’re crying!!! how did anne and christian franceschi manage to spawn two flawless and talented siblings!!!!!!
EVERY TIME I DIE
ebolarama - it’s a performance video in a roller rink what more could you want
wanderlust - you’ve probably caught on to the fact that i love creepy aesthetic shit.
decayin with the boys - THIS VIDEO HAS ME HOWLING. there are too many good moments to list here but the personal highlight is the dude admiring the lesbians making out, then he turns and admires they gays making out at about the 1:30 mark. also the jenga dream sequence. there’s a dick in this video, just a heads up. and a whole bootyass. i love andy williams. mild emetophobia tw at 2:30
FOXY SHAZAM
a dangerous man - eric nally’s screeching was the soundtrack of 2008
i like it - the chorus of this song is literally just “that’s the biggest black ass i’ve ever seen and i like it” and i have nothing more to say
holy touch - it’s a performance video but it’s. different. i really don’t wanna ruin this by saying too much about it. that’s just kinda how foxy shazam were. this song is a fucking banger. yes, they did have a trumpet player in the official lineup.
FRNKIERO ANDTHE CELLABRATION
joyriding - another performance video that’s. different. lmao. aesthetically perfect
GOOD CHARLOTTE
lifestyles of the rich and famous -  the proletariat banger we weren’t ready for in 2002, but we’re ready now.
girls and boys - old people being punk rock. that’s all.
predictable - i SPECIFICALLY remember watching this on the good charlotte website the day this dropped. THE EARLY 2000S BAD CG IS REAL. i was literally ten years old but i somehow Felt every word of that spoken bridge, man. WHEN THE LITTLE GIRL GIVES JOEL THE ROSE AND IT TURNS BLACK i deadass thought that was so fucking dope y’all
i just wanna live - ignoring the irony of joel whining about being famous, this video had THE MEMES.
GREEN DAY
longview - iconic simply by virtue of being their first video.
when i come around - ask me about my favorite songs of All Time and i’ll probably mention this one. it’s still great nowadays. i love all the shots of berkeley.
brain stew/jaded - this is such a great piece of art lmao the fucking. sludgy feeling of brain stew going into the chaos of jaded is great on the record, but even better in video form going from being stoned in sepia to tripping acid in an oversaturated cluttered space
walking contradiction - comedy gold
hitchin a ride - creepy weirdness and an iconic bassline. also mike dirnt looks fine as hell in this video
minority - i’m running out of ways to explain that a video is iconic to me purely bc of how important the song was to me at a given time lmao.
american idiot - is there anything i can truly say about this video? it was perfect in 2004, it’s perfect in 2017. uncomfortably relevant. epilepsy warning for strobe lighting effects in the second half
holiday - technically this was released before blvd, but since it chronologically precedes blvd in the story, i’m putting it first. this is like 90% here for the bridge section y’all. fucking iconic. i wore a fedora on the first day of sixth grade bc tre cool wore one in this video. not my proudest fashion moment. emetophobia warning at 1:56 but them playing EVERY character in the bar scene is perfection
boulevard of broken dreams - ah yes, 2005′s most overplayed song. i could not escape this song. every time the intro started everyone would just look at me bc i was The Green Day Chick. this video is aesthetically perfect though. shout out to mike dirnt’s jawline in profile
HOZIER
work song - first of all, this song makes me cry. second of all, the video is dreamy as fuck. it gives me irl chills. i love the choreography so much. the whole vibe is very modern southern gothic. and it’s incredibly intimate feeling without being... sexual or vulgar, i guess.
IN THIS MOMENT
adrenalize - first of all i’m gay. second of all i’m gay. this video is decidedly nsfw
whore - aesthetically pleasing. chris motionless being subby is the real highlight here
sick like me - again, it’s here for the aesthetic.
big bad wolf - also aesthetic but THIS MAKEUP LOOK. maria’s makeup look in this video is actually literally my aesthetic goal. epilepsy warning for strobe light effects
sex metal barbie - say it with me: aesthetic. i also love this one bc the lyrics are largely lifted from people talking shit about maria on the internet, shaming her for being a woman with sexuality and agency, so fuck yes i support it. mild body horror warning for this one
JOHN 5
making monsters - john’s videos are mostly performance based but this one is so cute lmao. where do i cop a j5 action figure

dead city radio and the new gods of supertown - the aesthetic. everybody looks great. matt is in a gorilla suit
well everybody’s fucking in a ufo - highly nsfw. where do i begin with this fucking hot mess...... sheri’s huge fake boobs. john and matt and ginger as astronauts. john jerkin off. the aliens with dicks. the fact that the whole story is about getting gang banged by aliens???? nothing will ever reach this level
SKOLD
self titled promotional clip - epilepsy warning for a lot of flashing and smash cuts. sort of a few partial music videos in one, but there are only two official skold videos, so i gotta include both of them. the quality is garbage. it’s so incredibly 1996. yet i love it. the last song, anything, is pretty nsfw as in there’s actual femdom porn clips but this is why i love it.
better the devil - if there were more skold videos i’d put them here. but as i said there are only two. tim out there lookin like not just a snack but a full course meal in 4k quality. goddamn. the only man i can ever truly call d*ddy. tiffany and eli lookin like delicious side dishes as well.
TAKING BACK SUNDAY
you’re so last summer - flava flave is in it
this photograph is proof - this song makes me so fucking nostalgic............. it transports me right back to eighth grade lmao. tbs were one of my fave bands in middle school.
makedamnsure - the most emo song of all time?? side note regarding tbs: real talk, being fat in middle school, seeing another fat person in a band was so fucking reassuring and great. i love eddie.
liar (it takes one to know one) - these visual effects are SO cool, even now.
YOU ME AT SIX
jealous minds think alike - ART... no but actually look at these literal fetuses. i fucking love this song. it’s probably my fave track on take off your colours.
kiss and tell - you right it’s another house party video BUT. baby josh with an undercut. he must be 18 or barely 19 here??
liquid confidence - WHEN YOU GOT NOTHING TO LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE
stay with me - jkfljkghdfskljgs okay serious time: this song got me through a seriously rough part of my life and i have the title tattooed on me partially because of the video.
loverboy - i have never seen a fandom in such utter chaos as the ymas fandom was on the day this video dropped. holy fucking shit. the THIRST was REAL.
bite my tongue - peak ymas captured in one music video. that’s truly the most important part. that peak sns era ymas was preserved forever in this video.
lived a lie - is it bad if i still kinda want a “we are believers” tattoo lmao. i really....... love this song a lot. is it obvious by now that ymas love a big chorus lmao
give - this song gives me The Feels. it deserved better than a performance video in an empty arena but it’s all we got, so here it is.

The 2016 Hyundai Tucson is a comfortable, stylish and quiet vehicle that's sure to excite shoppers and make segment rivals more than a bit nervous. Compact SUVs are hot, but Hyundai's entry has historically left many shoppers cold. The 2015 Tucson didn't compete in the most recent Cars.com $28,000 Compact SUV Challenge, but if it had, its loud, rough ride would have earned it a spot among the losers. A redesign for 2016 adds some much-needed ride refinement. Changes include more dramatic styling, a new turbocharged engine option that’s potent and efficient, additional cargo room, and a host of new safety and convenience features. Compare the 2015 and 2016 models here. The 2016 Tucson competes against the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape, just to name a few best-sellers. Compare them here.
Exterior & Styling
The Tucson's new look is bold and brawny. The previous model's cute-ute styling is replaced by a more upright, squared-off front end and sloped roofline. A larger grille and stylish LED-accented headlights anchor its more commanding face.
The Tucson has grown in both attitude and size. Overall length is up 3 inches, it's 1 inch wider and the roofline is less than an inch lower than the outgoing model’s.
How It Drives
I drove midlevel Sport and top Limited versions of the Tucson through the narrow, crowded streets of downtown Minneapolis and the sweeping, pastoral hills of western Wisconsin; it easily maneuvered both.
I tested the new 175-horsepower, turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that comes standard on Eco, Sport and Limited trims. It replaces the older 2.0-liter four-cylinder that still powers the base SE trim level. With 195 pounds-feet of torque from the new engine, acceleration from a stop was hearty.
The biggest surprise, though, was the new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It paired seamlessly with the turbo, ticking off snappy shifts from a stop and furnishing smooth, timely power on the highway. It exhibited none of the telltale bogging and lurching common with many dual-clutch transmissions. In fact, it feels so normal shoppers will likely not be able to tell the difference between Hyundai's dual-clutch and a traditional automatic.
Fuel economy with the new powertrain is competitive: Front-wheel-drive Eco models are EPA-rated 26/33/29 mpg city/highway/combined (Sport and Limited models get a bit less), which is much better than the SE’s 164-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder (23/31/26 mpg). In the Eco trim, the new turbo's economy is in line with the Honda CR-V (27/34/29) and better than the Toyota RAV4 (23/30/26). The Tucson also beats the Escape on efficiency: Base Escapes get 22/31/25; the Ford’s optional turbo 1.6-liter is rated 23/32/26, and the turbo 2.0-liter is rated 22/30/25.
Two drive modes are selectable via a button near the shifter: Sport and Eco. Accelerator response and transmission timing are adjusted depending on the mode, though neither had a big impact. In Sport mode, the accelerator pedal was a bit more sensitive; in Eco, it was slightly dulled. I spent most of my drive time in the default, normal mode.
The outgoing Tucson's two biggest weaknesses were ride quality and noise. A firm ride and poor road isolation transmitted every bump through the cabin, and it was one of the loudest compact crossovers in the class, with high levels of wind and road noise. The new version is much quieter, and its more compliant ride and better bump absorption make it long-drive comfortable. The Limited model impressed with its smoothness, but the Sport model's sport-tuned suspension reminded me of the old Tucson: It rides too firmly, hopping over bumps with an uncomfortably brittle, jittery feel.
The Inside
The Limited trim's interior wears plenty of padding and upscale touches, such as leather seats and a stitched dashboard. The Sport model's cabin is noticeably more modest, with more hard plastic surfaces and cloth seats, though it doesn't look or feel as cheap as lower Escape and RAV4 trims.
One of my favorite features is the standard cloth upholstery. OK, that sounds really boring, but stay with me. It's YES Essentials stain- and odor-resistant fabric, so spilled liquids bead up instead of seeping into the fabric, minimizing cleanup, stains and mysterious odors. As a mom and a clumsy coffee drinker, this stuff is brilliant. Can I get it on a couch?
Hyundai lowered the Tucson's roofline by less than an inch for 2016, but headroom is ample in both rows. By the numbers, the Tucson offers 39.2 inches of rear headroom. That’s a smidge more than last year and more than the RAV4 (38.9), CR-V (38.6) and Escape (39.0).
Backseat passengers will have enough legroom on comfortable, bolstered outboard seats; rear legroom is down less than an inch this year. With 38.2 inches of rear legroom, the Tucson still offers more than the RAV4 (37.2) and Escape (36.8) and almost matches the CR-V (38.3). The middle position is not ideal, however: The seat is narrower and harder, and the shoulder portion of the seat belt retracts from the ceiling, impacting the driver's rearward visibility.
Ergonomics & Electronics
The Limited model's standard 8-inch touch-screen multimedia system responded quickly, had simple menus and was easy to use. Clear buttons below the screen and handy volume and tuning dials make the system a no-brainer.
The standard 5-inch touch-screen looks dinky but functions just fine. The audio system has a different menu structure, but it’s just as simple. It has the same handy button/knob setup as well.
Hyundai launched the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration systems on the 2015 Hyundai Sonata, but the systems aren't yet available on the 2016 Tucson.
Cargo & Storage
Small-item storage in front is excellent. There’s a medium-sized center console (not quite large enough for my big purse, however), a large uncovered bin under the climate controls, a smaller one near the center cupholders and a narrow, magazine-sized cubby at leg level on the front passenger side.
Much of the 2016’s 3-inch length increase translates into more cargo room, though it's still shy of what competitors offer. This year, the Tucson has 31.0 cubic feet behind the rear seats, which is 5.3 more than the outgoing model. Fold the seats down and there's 61.9 cubic feet of space. The CR-V has 35.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 70.9 after they're folded. The RAV4 has 38.4/73.4 and the Escape 34.3/67.8.
The Tucson's cargo area has a dual-level floor. It can be raised by 2 inches, which doesn't sound useful, but in its highest position the cargo cover slides easily under the load floor for handy storage when carrying bulky items. Also convenient is an available hands-free smart liftgate; stand within 3 feet of the vehicle's rear with the key fob in your purse or pocket, and the liftgate will open automatically after the Tucson issues a warning by beeping a few times. Ford offers a foot-swipe-activated liftgate on the Escape that’s also helpful, but requires good balance.
Safety
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson has not yet been crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The Tucson has easy-to-access lower Latch and top tether anchors and room for two child-safety seats. Read more in our
Car Seat Check
.
A backup camera is standard across the lineup. New active-safety features like blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on Sport and Limited models, but unavailable on lower trims. Other new safety systems, like lane departure warning, a forward collision prevention system with pedestrian detection and a dynamic bending light system (which swivels the headlights around curves), are available as options but only on Limited models. Click
here
for a full list of safety features.
Value in Its Class
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson starts at $23,595 including an $895 destination charge. That's about $1,000 more than the outgoing model and a smidge less than all three main competitors. Standard features on the base Tucson SE include a backup camera, automatic projector headlights with LED accents, satellite radio, iPod and USB inputs, and Bluetooth connectivity and streaming.
To get the more efficient powertrain, however, you'll have to opt for the Eco model, which starts at $25,045. For the active-safety features detailed above you’ll need to move up to the Sport model ($27,045), where you’ll also get new convenience features like the hands-free power liftgate. Annoyingly, the navigation system is available only on the most expensive trim, the Limited ($30,795), where it's standard.
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson is a big improvement over the outgoing model and does many things well. When there's a Compact SUV Challenge rematch, the 2016 model is almost certain to claim a spot on the podium.

CHC 2018
10/3/18
Despite (or maybe because of) the fact that last night is still raw, let’s go around the horn for 2019. Or maybe not technically around the horn, since this won’t be done entirely in order.
By way of intro, I would like submit something that will rear its complicated head a lot in this writeup. I have dubbed it D-WETS (Depends Who Else They Sign).
So, for example, perhaps a team can compete for a WS with, say, Kyle Schwarber as their starting LF. But only of there are other players on the roster who can make up for his deficiencies. (More on this below, but) I’m not necessarily advocating for Schwarbles to be the starting LF. But you *could* have him there if you were concrete at every other position. In other words, it Depends on Who Else They Sign.
The thoughts below skew heavily toward position players. And revolve around a common gripe: this team puts up too many bad at-bats. I tend to think of the “current version” of this team as, essentially, the Joe Maddon era version. Even the 2016 title team were maddeningly inconsistent. A trend that continued (got worse) in ’17-’18. Coming in to THIS year, they made the decision to essentially stick with the same group of players but hire a new hitting coach. It’s certainly not as simple as blaming Chili Davis. But going into 2019, it seems pretty clear that more change is needed.
Last general note before diving in. As mentioned above, the 2016 team was maddening (Maddoning? <clever!) at times. But when you look at the differences between that team and this one, one thing that jumps out at me is the guy in the leadoff position. I LOVED Dex as a Cub, but by bringing him up, I am not saying that bringing him BACK would solve anything. Rather, I bring it up to illustrate the value of consistency at the top of your lineup. He was the leadoff guy, period. The rest of the lineup was built from there. I often wonder if that consistency isn’t a pretty big deal.
Ok, here we go.
CATCHER
Was 2018 an off year for Willy or was this his true self? His offensive numbers were way down, especially in power/production categories. But his defense seemed to slip a little too. Love his enthusiasm, and has shown flashes of brilliance. Top-tier catchers are hard to come by so I wouldn’t be surprised if he stayed. But it will depend, in part, on … D-WETS.
3B
KB was Rookie of the Year and MVP. As painful as it was to watch him this year (including (especially) yesterday), let’s not get cute and start questioning his value. He will be fine.
Question is where does he play? He is a good 3B, and seems to play a decent LF. It is, of course, a case of the D-WETS. Which leads me to …
…David Bote. Plays a very good 3B and displayed a flair for the dramatic at the plate. However his overall offensive #s were not spectacular. If you go into Spring Training thinking he’s your guy at 3B, it can only be because you have made some significant, confident moves in a couple other spots (D-WETS).
SS
El Mago. Warts and all, anyone who says they wouldn’t want this guy on their team is a dumbass and/or a liar.
2B
This is a tricky one. I think they should keep BenZo but basically as a fill-in / super-utility / great clubhouse guy / veteran presence / savvy pinch-hitter / Good Christian / PF Flyer shill / etc.
I do NOT think Happ gets the job. In fact Happ is the first name I will mention where I think you have to move him. Or *maybe* keep him as a sub / 4th (5th?) OF. I suppose if you sign future Hall of Famers at a bunch of other positions he gets a shot (D-WETS). But the short answer is, move him for whatever you can get.
This leaves a hole at 2B. And while you could make a strong argument that their bigger need is OF stability, I think signing the right 2B could go a LOOOOOOONG way.
OF
This is even trickier than 2B. I talked about KB above. So maybe LF is more or less spoken for? Depends on Bote, D-WETS, etc. I suppose Happ enters the conversation but that comes with a HUGE D-WETS caveat. And I don’t see any way that both Bote and Happ end up as starters. I know, I know — I’m raising more questions than I’m answering.
Schwarbles, Schwarbles, Schwarbles. Love the 2016 WS comeback story, love that he lost all that weight in an effort to … why did he lose all that weight again? I think 2018 was his third strike. If he was a decent glove man, maybe he comes back. But I just can’t see it happening. Love you, man. (Ok, fine, in honor of his performance in the 2016 Fall Classic I will nod toward D-WETS with Schwarbles as well.)
Almora and Heyward are the poster boys for this whole D-WETS thing (I’m already sick of that term). I’ll go ahead and mention Bryce Harper’s name here, because it would be hard to argue with him in RF and JHey in CF. Haper makes me nervous (ANOTHER free-swinger? Really?) but this is pure conjecture so I won’t write about it anymore.
Almora and Heyward both play gold-glove OF. I love Heyward, and his #s did improve a bit this year. But to assume that his #s will continue to improve is optimistic bordering on foolish.
Almora is young so this is maybe not fair but I kind of think we know what we have there. Great glove, decent bat. Yes he’s shown flashes at the plate, and maybe his defense is good enough that he deserves a shot as an everyday starter. But they would have to be concrete in every other D-WETS position to hand him the keys to CF.
Something’s gotta give in CF/RF. If they sign, say a Springer/Yelich type? Keep either JHey or Albert. D-WETS. Again. In a perfect world? Move Almora, package him with another player or two, and sign a CF who plays great defense and has plate discipline (they grow on trees, right?).
SP
This is probably more than I can bite off. So I’ll just do a quick overview.
I was never in favor of the Darvish signing. But even the nay-est naysayer couldn’t have predicted this year’s level of NON contribution. They are kind of stuck with the dude but that may not be all bad. Odds are he comes back, and contributes.
If he does, the rotation will likely be Lester, Hendricks, Darvish, Quintana, _____. Not bad.
Speaking of Q, I don’t feel like you can write him in as anything better than a 4. But if he’s your 4 or 5, your rotation is pretty solid.
Would it be great to sign another top-shelf SP? Of course. And I hope they do. But there are bigger fish to fry.
RP
It is actually pretty amazing that their ‘pen performed as well as it did. I don’t actually see huge problems here (gasp!). Morrow will be back, and Strop has quietly become … dare I say reliable? Cishek is very good. Not sure what to make of CJ, but I think you can find enough bright spots with Wilson, Mills, Chavez, De La Rosa. Not sold on Kintzler, but maybe.
SUMMARY (position players only)
Team is set at 1B, SS, 3B/LF, and maybe C.
They need a 2B and AT LEAST two OF.
If by some miracle they sign the ideal 2B AND an ideal OF (or 3B, with KB moving to LF), they could *maybe* stop there. D-WETS.
