Includes mentions of implied child abuse, Lu Ten’s diaries, exploring Avatar Roku’s legacy, sharing a balcony, heart-to-hearts, a hot spring under the stars, an actual date, and artbending. It’s incomplete, but what we have is bliss. Slowburn, mutual pining. Zutara-centric, but also explores the personalities of Team Avatar and their relationships.

Get To Know Me: Fic Writer Edition

Borrowing this from @naladot 💙 I’m going to be mainly talking about Gintama for this due to my blog’s nature.

Name: @bossladytae or Garowyn

Fandoms: Fic-wise, Gintama right now. But I’ve written for a number of different fandoms over the last 18 years.

As appreciative as I am about kudos, it would be nice to hear more from readers if they enjoy my stories.

Personal favorite: There’s a special place for each fic in my heart, so I’ll talk about seven of them:

A Siege of Shadows – this is my Hijikata psychological/horror fic and probably the one I’m most proud of. I invested a lot into this fic, everything from various topics of research to careful selection of songs for each chapter’s mood. Sorry, Toushi, for putting you through a hellish nightmare of a tale.

Until Silence Prevails – delving into the dark depths of Takasugi’s mind. It’s my shortest fic, but still packed with meaning.

Keep Walking Forward Until You Never Look Back – this is a multi-chapter, character study on Sasaki Tetsunosuke, which is the first of its kind for Tetsu, I believe. I fleshed him out more and focused on his bond with the Shinsengumi, Hijikata in particular.

The Key to Success Is to Plan for Failure – a multi-chapter Katsura-led comedy fic featuring POV scenes from almost the entire main Gintama cast. This fic was a monster to write, utterly exhausting, yet a worthwhile venture for me.

The Transience of Dawn – an Itou character study focusing on three events in his life. It’s set before he reunites with the Shinsengumi in what will be his final days. Itou is my favourite antagonist after Takasugi, so I had to write about him.

Finding the Light That Never Fades – my favourite HijiTae fic of all the ones I’ve written, thus far. This combined comedy and drama with a touch of angst and romance, as Hijikata and Tae navigate their deepening friendship and budding attraction to one another.

Finding Our Place in the Sun – a fic about Tae and Tsukuyo spending time together. That’s pretty much all there is to it, because Tae and Tsukuyo content is still a scarcity in this fandom, and that’s a darn shame.

Current WIPs: Violet Moon Rising, which is a Tsukuyo-led film noir-inspired fic dedicated to @arirna. A Rabbit with No Name, a Kamui-centric AU in which almost everyone, including Kagura, has died as the result of a powerful android invasion. I do intend to update these fics once time allows me to, as I’m quite busy at the moment.

I also have several unpublished, semi-complete Gintama fics that I’ve accumulated over the last 15 years since I started dabbling in Gintama fic (but never finishing or posting anything until 2017, lol).

Favorite type of fic: I like writing a variety of fic. I’ve done character introspections, romance, comedy, action, psychological, horror/supernatural, time travel, and mysteries. Basically, whenever and whatever the muse strikes and provides, I may just write it. However, I’m slow with updates, because fan fic isn’t a priority.

As far as fic-reading habits go, pretty much the only Gintama romance fic I write or read is HijiTae whenever someone writes a new one, whether that someone is me or others. I have dabbled in fic for two other ships (it’s a secret; please don’t ask because I really won’t be telling!), but they’re unpublished and unfinished. If I ever do finish them, I may publish them with my pseudonym account (also a secret).

Beyond that, I like to read character studies, mysteries/psychological, or comedy/gen fic that involves characters other than the Yorozuya because there are already so many dedicated to them. Whatever catches my eye depends on whenever I check Gintama’s AO3 section.

Writing habits: I don’t think I have any standout ones. I just write whenever I can, especially if the muse is strong. Also, I read. Writers must always be reading. Don’t only read fan fic. Read other fiction, non-fiction, anything you can. Read inside and outside your favourite genre. Study the different styles. Read, and then write; write, and then read. Keep up a daily writing and reading routine if you can.

Fic recs: I’ve read many with interesting concepts, but, to keep it short, I’ll rec five Gintama fics.

Plan B by xxkoffeexx – the second HijiTae fic ever written in English back in 2009, and it’s dedicated to me by an old friend.

Your World by xxkoffeexx – a story about when Takasugi was a hero, not a villain, to somebody.

Jump is best when fought over by maydreamer – a short but meaningful Zenzou fic, as he tries to buy Jump magazine in a world without Gintoki.

They Say It’s Only the Worst Day of Your Life So Far by StarryDustandFluffyStuff – a fic on Katsura’s wartime experiences following Shouyou’s death.

Tiger Mom by gettinyinggywithit – a Tsukuyo introspective fic on education, family, and her role in Seita’s life.

yeah, so i stumbled across a post that suddenly made me remember one of my favourite and most heart-wrenching fics i've ever read. kinda darkish, meta-ish about the nature of the idol industry, involving characters that feel so human and relationships that are messy. it's so well written and goddamn angsty, so i'd definitely recommend you checking it out if it sounds like something you'd like!! (and if it doesn't, you could also check out the writer for their other fics because they write other genres like humour really well too! theyre not primarily a writer for jjp or got7 fics for that matter but imo anything they write is just so good ;_;)

Summary: People say you shouldn't date your co-workers, but in the industry, it's hard for all your relationships not to get muddled up together. For Jinyoung, there's Wonpil—Kpop's perfect friends-to-lovers dream couple, if it weren't for the whole part where Jinyoung cheated. He's older and wiser now, and he's not going to mess up a good thing. Except there's a big gap between who Jinyoung really is, and who he pretends to be.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

It’s after midnight. Derek’s not really used to Casey peeking her head into his room at this time of night, and absolutely not when she’d been yelling at him just a couple hours ago. (He’d asked if Max made an effort to pretend like he listened when Casey talked or if he just ignored her—a serious question, and not his fault that Casey took it so personally.)

“No,” he answers, without looking up from the textbook on his lap. He hasn’t managed to read past the first sentence in the last hour since he announced that he needed to go do homework, which had elicited a genuine gasp from Nora.

“It might help if we talk about it,” Casey continues, taking a tentative step into the room.

“It won’t. You can close the door on your way out.”

“Der-ek,” she says softly, not moving to leave.

He sighs and rubs a palm over his face. She won’t leave unless he gives her a reason to. Annoying. “My mom is like this, okay? I don’t need to talk about it.”

Casey does close his door, now, but she’s on the wrong side of it. He wants to get up and push her out of the room, but he doesn’t really have the energy and when she’s hellbent on “family bonding,” he has to be a lot meaner than usual to battle her off. Maybe he should be ashamed of himself for letting her win this one. It happens way too often these days.

She doesn’t say anything though. She straightens her shoulders and then crosses the room to sit herself primly on the end of his bed. She doesn’t look at him or speak, and a strange sense of—something spreads through him. Relief? Affection? No way, definitely not.

But it’s weirdly nice to no longer be alone.

When she speaks, she doesn’t push him to open up like she expects. Instead she twists one hand around the other, her eyes focused somewhere above his computer.

“My dad is seeing someone,” she says.

“Oh,” Derek says, not sure what else to say.

She glances over at him, her chin jutting out in a weird way that suggests she’s fighting off tears. This normally bothers him but this time he holds still, waiting for whatever she’ll say next.

“It’s—fine, I guess. He just told me and Lizzie,” she continues. “I found out the woman he’s seeing has two kids around our age.”

“Ouch,” Derek says, suddenly understanding. He waits for Casey to get mad at him, but she gives a weak smile and shrugs.

“Yeah,” she says very softly. “I just keep wondering if…”

She trails off and doesn’t finish, but he hears her thoughts in the silence. It’s the same thing with his mom—after months of planning for him to go to Mexico with her over the summer, she pulls the plug like it’s no big deal. He’s been saving for it, and worse, he actually wanted it. His fault. He should have known better.

“I don’t think Nora would have been happy in New York,” he says.

“No,” Casey agrees. “But still.”

He doesn’t say anything, trying to imagine the McDonald nuclear family living in some high-rise apartment. He can’t quite picture it—can’t picture this house without them, can’t picture living here without Casey anymore. He’s imagined that reality so many times that he doesn’t know how to feel to discover he can’t imagine it in this moment, like the other was just a daydream but this, a real alternate reality they might have had, feels impossible.

“So that’s what’s going on with me,” Casey says. She looks at him, her eyes luminous. “You okay?”

“I’m good,” he answers—quickly, but without malice.

He watches her contemplate something for a moment, chewing at her bottom lip, and then she seems to make up her mind and reaches out for his hand currently holding the textbook. Maybe she just intended to pat his hand or something, but instead she sort of clutches at his fist. He doesn’t know if he should let go of the book to hold her hand or—what, but now they’re both looking at her hand over his.

And in a split second, he once again wishes the McDonalds did not live in his house.

“Um,” Casey says. “I just wanted to make sure you were okay, and, um—” She pats his hand a couple times, neither of them daring to look at each other. “And, yeah.”

She gets up and leaves in a hurry, giving him just a glimpse of her flushed face before the door closes behind her with a soft click.

Derek leans his head back against his headboard and closes his eyes. There was more than one reason he’d wanted to get out of the house for the summer.

lil fic turned out to be this svt fic I started but did not continue when I realized I was totally self-plagiarizing. Here is the first segment though:

Although it probably was not wise for Wonwoo to be watching videos of himself, this is what he was doing when he happened upon the strangest channel he had ever seen. He didn’t realize it was strange at first. The video he clicked on was, he assumed, a fan-taken video of a performance of “Fire.” He wanted—or, rather, he felt obliged—to monitor himself, find flaws in his execution, do better the next time. After a few minutes of watching, it occurs to him that his hair in the video is blonde, and the costumes are black trimmed with red, and the video says it was taken in Los Angeles, where they certainly have not yet performed this song. He sits at his desk for a long time, staring at the paused video, goosebumps raised on his skin.

Painting also turned out to be a svt fic which is my long-dreamed, never-fulfilled desire of writing a gose episode:

Whoever pitched the episode theme for this recording of Going Seventeen clearly wanted to make Minghao miserable. Upon reflection, it was probably Mingyu who pitched it, which seems about right. Anyway, Minghao is miserable. “Great work!” coos the art teacher, a very cool man in his early sixties who looks like an art teacher in a movie, destined to train a young artist full of raw, unpolished talent into his full potential. Unfortunately, he’s chosen Wonwoo to focus on. Wonwoo! Minghao shifts on his stool, frowning at the canvas in front of him. “Have you ever painted before?” asks the art teacher. “No,” Wonwoo answers, bashful. He glances sidelong at Minghao. Minghao doesn’t dare look up. “You should,” says the art teacher. “You have a real gift.” Wonwoo bites down on a smile. Minghao stabs his brush against the canvas. Wonwoo!

✨What's a fic you've posted you wish you could breathe life into again and have people talking about it? (or simply a fic you wish got more credit)

One fic of mine that I posted way back in 2014 is "poetry of politics" a mostly gen ATLA fic with a subplot of a broken Zutara relationship. I am still really proud of this fic!! Here is an excerpt:

Whale Tail Island has been a contentious issue since the end of the war fifteen-some years earlier.

“It’s been Fire Nation for nearly two hundred years,” Zuko would say at state dinners, surprised every time, looking at her over his wine.

Katara would swirl the wine in her glass and force herself to hold her tongue. “It was Water Tribe for six hundred,” she’d point out.

And then, if someone else were there, maybe Suki or Aang, they’d point out that before that, Whale Tail Island belonged to a small tribe of non-benders who had been conquered by the Water Tribe on their southward journey after a raging civil war in the north.

“We’re talking in circles,” Zuko would say. Katara would massage out the crease in her forehead, and ask for more wine.
