Naked Giants: Interview
by Tasha Bielaga
Tumblr media
Ever seen a 20 year old stand on one foot and play the bass behind his head? Welcome to a band whose new signature move may be just that. The boys in Naked Giants make a certain kind of ebullient rock that’s perfect for screaming in your car at 1PM or in your friends face during their 1AM encore. Comprised of bassist, vocalist, & resident hip shaker Gianni Aiello, guitarist, vocalist, & chain smoker Grant Mullen, and drummer & all around good person Henry LaVallee, the Seattle psychedelic fuzz trio spent last weekend screaming in someone else’s basement before hitting up SXSW this week. We talk about their new life of seemingly never ending tours, rejuvenating festival experiences, and the security guard who kept them (almost) hostage.
Electric Daze: Your show in Portland was so much fun! How do you feel about playing house shows again after you’ve been playing all this big venues on tour?
Gianni: We grew up as a band on house shows, so it’s always nice to play them. After having been on tour with PWR BTTM and Car Seat Headrest, it’s always weird going back to no monitors and people getting up right in your face, but the energy is a lot more fun.
ED: Do you remember the first house show you ever went to that made you want to start playing them?
Gianni: I don’t think I ever went to a house show before we started.
Grant: I hadn’t either. We started Naked Giants in high school and I didn’t start going to house shows for other bands until college.
Henry: Yeah, and I don’t really like being sardined in a crowd. I like being the drummer and watching people move, it’s way more fun. I don’t think I would ever put myself in that situation.
ED: How was this east coast tour with PWR BTTM? Was that the first time you’d been out there?
Gianni: It was awesome, and it was our first time! We’re really fortunate to have done it with PWR BTTM because they have such a big following out there. We got to play in front of these huge crowds. And we got to see some friends and eat some good food.
Do you have a favorite show from the tour?
Henry: Brooklyn at the Knitting Factory. Our managers flew out from Seattle which was cool, and it was my first time in NY as a young adult so I got to experience the buzz. We had played a couple shows so we were warmed up, so I could turn my mind off and just do my thing.
Gianni: After Brooklyn, we starting getting the crowd to sing along to one of our songs because we realized PWR BTTM fans are sucker for singing along. So Providence was nice for that, and we had a nice dinner there.
Henry: That was a cool show too. It was in a sit down venue and we were worried it was going to be kind of tame. But everyone came down to the front and you couldn’t even tell there was seats in between them, it ended up being one of the rowdier shows.
ED: Do you guys prefer rowdier crowds or crowds who are more attentive, so to speak?
Grant: There’s a line in between.
Gianni: It’s weird, because when I’m in a crowd I don’t want to be pushed around, but I do like dancing. But when I’m playing and watching it’s discouraging when people aren’t moving around and flailing. It’s awesome when people are freaking out and having a good time, as long as they’re not disturbing anyone. When it goes too far though, I do feel like people are making it more about themselves than the music.
Henry: It can be weird because we’re not playing hardcore metal music, you know? So sometimes I get taken aback when people react like that.
ED: Do you guys get tired of each other on tour?
Gianni: For me, the little things bubble up under the surface. But I’m not going to get mad at them because we’re in a band together, and in the long run we’re all working towards the same goal.
Grant: Yeah I feel that. We don’t have big issues.
Henry: And whenever there is, we’re really good at talking about our feelings and recognizing that the little things are the little things.
ED: Since you’ve been on tour for so long and you get to meet so many people, is there anyone you’ve met who’s just super cool or interesting?
Grant: The head of security in NY was a voice actor, he went from overweight to super fit, and he’s a magician. He took me and some friends in the back of the venue, invaded the greenroom of the band who played after us, and gave us a bunch of weed. Then he did this trick: he had a cigarette, rolled it between his fingers, had us all come up close and look at it, and then made it disappear, and then come back into his hand! And then he kind of kept us hostage back there. The funny thing about being in the music scene and working with these professionals, is that they are not that professional. They do the same stuff that you do when you’re in college or high school and they just continue to do it. Not all of them, but a surprising amount.
Henry: Another cool person is our friend Jaley! We met her at Doe Bay and then again when we played with Car Seat Headrest, and then she put our Eugene show together. It’s always cool to meet people like that who you get to see again and again.
Tumblr media
ED: Since you guys played SXSW last year and you’re playing again this year, is there anything you’re super excited for now that you’ve been through the ring once before?
Grant: I’m 21, so now I can actually go to shows.
Henry: I met a cool person on our Car Seat Headrest tour and she’s gonna be there doing radio stuff, so I’m just excited to get to hang out with friends from the tour. Like everyone we’ve met on tour meets back in Austin for this big industry conference. It’s much more of a conference than a festival to us.
ED: Is there a favorite festival you’ve played then?
Everyone: Doe Bay!!!!
Gianni: It’s on beautiful Orcas Island, put on by our good friend Kevin Sur. Basically everyone just goes out there, and there’s two stages but only one band plays at a time, so the whole crowd just migrates back and forth. Over the course of the weekend, you become rejuvenated with this spiritual music energy and everyone becomes your friend. It’s just awesome.
Grant: You get to see other artists play, and then they watch you play and you become friends, and you get to know everyone who’s just there to watch. So then everywhere you walk people are just excited to see you.
Henry: We’re very lucky to get to play that.
ED: Do you have a preference playing festivals vs. shows?
Gianni: We love playing festivals, but I think it’ll be even more fun when we get to play the big ones to huge crowds.
Henry: I like festivals because you get to go for free and I love a random conversation with someone over music. But also, the house show in Portland was one of the best house shows to be at and talk to people with, I started the night in a sad mood and left it feeling good about life.
ED: You guys are playing Fisherman’s music festival soon in Everett, which features a lot of local Seattle bands. Are there any particular Seattle bands you love playing shows with?
Gianni: Honcho Poncho! But also Thunderpussy and Dude York. Anyone really, the community is incredible. Everyone’s a family.
ED: Heck yeah! After talking to a lot of Seattle bands lately like Hello, I’m Sorry and COSMOS, I’ve been working to draw connections on how everyone views the music scene in Seattle and how it’s influenced them. Any words on that?
Grant: I personally feel like the scene was very exclusive before we entered it. I think with us gaining momentum, a lot of other bands have too. Now it feels like a very inclusive group. Everyone’s supportive, we’re not trying to compete and play better shows than the others, we just want to watch and support.
Gianni: I definitely think it’s very supportive in Seattle, especially with KEXP. One thing I’ve been talking about lately is crossing over boundaries. We’re friends with a lot of guitar bands, but it would be really interesting to break into the hip hop scene and get to pull from different inspirations. We kind of get to do that when we play with COSMOS.
ED: I heard you guys have a lot more new music ready to go, but haven’t recorded them yet. With your first EP, did you record it yourself or in the studio?
Gianni: With that EP, we did pay for studio time and record there. We do some recordings ourselves but nothing of high enough quality to put on cassettes or anything.
Henry: Although, I would totally buy a cassette with our home demos on them. They’re super genuine Naked Giants, because it’s just us three doing the recordings. Well, I just play drums.
ED: That’s awesome! There’s definitely a huge sense of pride in doing your own recordings, so I admire those bands a lot.
Gianni: Yeah! Our managers want us to find bands we like and find out who produced them so we can talk to the producers. 9/10 bands we pick produce their own music. It’s super awesome.
ED: You guys have your cassettes for sale with you on this tour, is there a reason you chose cassettes over CDs?
Gianni: It was more of the labels decision, but it’s cool. I don’t even own a cassette player. But they look awesome.
ED: How is balancing college, work, and music for you?
Henry: I’m actually about to get my transfer degree, but music is really the most important thing for me.
Gianni: We all live close together so we meet up when everyone’s free. I’m really lucky with my job, they just let me take two months off to go on tour. The most important thing for all of us really is just getting together and recording or writing.
ED: One of my friends mentioned you guys sounds like you could soundtrack an indie movie after she saw your set in Portland. If you could soundtrack any movie, what would it be?
Gianni: Spinaltap
Henry: Wayne’s World 3
Grant: Begotten. it’s a silent horror film, so we really could soundtrack it too.
